NOTES This piece is dedicated to the memory of my grandmother, Shirley Bell. Through a variety of moods and characters, this piece reflects the deep, meaningful, and accomplished life she lived. For the most part, pedaling and sticking choices are left up to the performer’s discretion. An ‘X’ prior to a note indicates mallet dampening, where the performer stops the previous note from ringing by gently pressing the mallet into it. Use two sets of mallets for this piece—one softer, one harder. The mallet changes can be facilitated by switching one hand at a time in the two preceding bars. Since there is ample space here, one hand would switch mallets while the other performs the written notes. –Colin Bell

SHIRLEY BELL Shirley Bell (Morrison), born on September 25, 1932, was the daughter of Scottish immigrants James and Katherine Morrison. A family deeply rooted in Scottish folk music, they moved often due to wartime hardships and finally settled in Staten Island, New York. Shirley was the lone daughter of the family with two brothers who were war veterans. Shirley’s strong musical background led her to an internationally renowned career in Scottish Highland Dancing and Bagpiping. She married George M. Bell, a world famous bagpiper and one of the founding members of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association, which brought the competitive bagpipe band activity to the United States. She regularly performed at USO and disabled veteran functions as a bagpiper and dancer. Shirley’s international legacy eventually led to her becoming the first American ever invited to judge the World Highland Dancing Championships in Cowal, Scotland. The enormity of her music and dance career was overshadowed only by her accomplishments as a mother and grandmother. Undeniably the matriarch of the Bell family, she was the mother of 6 children (all renowned bagpipers, drummers, and singers) and the grandmother of 13. She kept a large household under her rule, while having the old world grace of always having a cup of tea ready for any unexpected guest. Passing in 2005, Shirley left behind a professional legacy and grace that resonated with everyone who knew her.
