18 & UNDER TENNIS With over 300 junior teams, from 24 clubs, participating in weekly competition on the North Shore alone, tennis remains one of New Zealand’s most popular participation sports. Junior Interclub competitions for 10-18 year olds run from October to April, whilst tournaments and holidays camps run all year round, so check out a club near you! Tennis Hot Shots is a starter program for children aged 12 and under. Players follow a progressive pathway using red, orange and green balls which bounce lower, travel slower and are therefore easier to hit. A learning through play philosophy means children learn the game of tennis not just the skills. Through playing the game, understanding tactics and having fun kids will fall in love tennis.

GAME TIME TENNIS A pre-interclub competition framework for new and developing 10 & Unders. Players are given a passport and stamps are collected as they compete in the series of tournaments. There are 3 tournaments for red, orange and green ball players each term.

Check out the new fun, social, group tennis program for adults of all abilities. It involves fast paced drills done to music. A great way to keep fit and stay in shape, while having fun in a social environment.

Keep it simple silly! A kindly reminder to keep things in perspective. There is nothing more worthwhile than simply spending time with the ones you love, your children, friends and your family, create some special memories these holidays. Spend time in each other's company

Write a letter, paint or draw

Turn off your phone, turn off the TV and definitely get off that computer! Come together at the dinner table and talk about the day. How was your day? What did you do? What did you learn? Laugh and have fun.

Write a letter to your family or friends, write a to do list for the holidays, make a card just to brighten someone’s day. Even better, make a card and take it round to a friends to say thankyou for being so awesome.

Make time to spend with your family and friends, make a family play date. Take Nana and Grandad out on a picnic or organise a bbq, grab the cricket set or soccer ball and head down to the beach…summers not over yet.

Just put your shoes on and head out, if it’s a quick walk, a walk to the beach for an ice cream or an organised hike with a picnic. Get out and smell the roses, breathe in the air and twirl around like a child.

Laugh more

I read somewhere The average 4-year-old laughs 300 times a day, the average 40-yearold laughs four. Hmmm unfortunately we get a bit serious as we get older. Watch a comedy, read some jokes out loud with the kids, watch funniest home videos or just stand together and see who can do the best barrel laugh! That one always gets us giggling.

Go for a walk

Plan an event

There is always something happening close by, find a family event, maybe dinner and a movie, perhaps a show or something similarly wonderful.

Plan your Easter egg hunt

This ones pretty simple, but make it more about the fun and the hunt, then the eggs this Easter. Happy Easter!

Read a book

Join the local library with the kids and explore new authors. Grab a whole bunch of books and spend time relaxing, reading and talking about your books. I really enjoy lying with my boys while I read…although we end up laughing and chatting and not much reading gets done! But that is ok too.

hallenge c y e l r u T k e e w 52 The My husband came up with the 52 week walking challenge. Walking 52 tracks mostly in and around the greater Auckland area aiming for every Sunday. We tabled the idea and we all jumped on board, game on! The rules: We could not do the same track twice in the 52 weeks. We had to walk for a minimium of 1 hour. We highly recommend Camel Baks for hydation if you are walking or cycling distances. WEEK 1

Okura Bush walk, the first thing we noticed…steps and we all forgot walking tracks involved different gradients, this track had a lot of up and even though the kids talked most of the way they moaned a lot too. We discovered we were all not as fit as we thought but we were pleased to chalk up week 1. WEEK 2

The man had a plan and purchased Camel Baks for the boys, bingo the boys were engaged and I’m pleased to report we had no moaning and we enjoyed treking the 2 hours without any hassles or dramas, this was the week Oliver discovered he was the “mountain goat of the family” as he excelled on the steep inclines, Reilly and I much preferred the fast down even if we did loose our footing now and again.

WEEK 3

We were exited about our new Auckland destination, when we awoke the rain was falling heavily but we put on the rain jackets, packed dry clothes and towels and off we went, Cudlip Track – Beware of the sheep poo if you are heading to this track. It wasn’t a great wet weather walk.

“The challenge brought out the best in us all and we became closer as a family. We got fitter and saw so many places around Auckland we would otherwise not have seen. We realised just how beautiful our city is.”

WEEK 10

A school class trip inspired a walk up and around Shakespeare Park it was so nice hearing the kids reciting things they had learnt about the wild life and bush on their visit. WEEK 3-18

The Waitakeres, Long Bay, Wenderholm and Warkworth to name a few. Thank you to Sue and family for sharing your challenge and we would love to hear from anyone if this made you get out and enjoy some of the walks around you.

Bush walks Here is a great little website that may be of interest if you want to try some walks in and around Auckland.

www.walksinauckland.com

1. Wynyard Quarter and the Viaduct (central) - if you haven't been there for a while, give yourself a treat. The area is continually evolving. The route is wheelfriendly. walksinauckland.com/wynyard-quarter-waterfront-

Walking is a fun activity to do as a family outing - take your children, your grandchildren, nieces and nephews, or your neighbours children. It gives children the opportunity to get outside in the fresh air, to explore the environment, use their imagination and to ask questions.

loop

2. Churchill Park (east) starts off on an inland route and returns via the cliff tops. The park is used for farm animals. And there is a dog off leash area. The route is buggy friendly. walksinauckland.com/walks-in-auckland-churchill-

There are plenty of short walks in Auckland to choose from, which makes it easy to get walking every weekend - with or without the company of children. Here are five coastal walks which we have chosen specifically because they include one or more playgrounds plus toilets. Before the summer weather ends, pack a picnic, grab the hats and go and have some fun!

park

3. Mangere Esplanade (south) at high tide or low tide there is much to see. Soon the Southern Pied Oyster Catchers will be moving off onto their migratory journeys. walksinauckland.com/mangere-esplanade-loop

4. The Belmont Bays (north) loop offers a view across to the harbour bridge from the wetlands. walksinauckland.com/belmont-bay-walk

5. Then there is one of our favourites - the Te Atatu Peninsula (west) with fab views looking across Auckland Harbour, as well as the wetlands to enjoy. walksinauckland.com/teatatu-peninsula-walk
