Fear of Decay _ Limit of Wax Membrane Studies "Fear is external force combat against balance and cause irreversible damage to original stable state."

Wax is a special material. After heating wax to over 64℃ and then cool down, wax will solidfy and product a thin membrane. This thin membrane is plastic, extensibility and destructible. The limit of this material properties can be recorded during the solidfy process .

There are three main variations : Temperature, density and spacing destence. Variation 01 | Temperature (Time)

5

Variation 02 | Density

Variation 03 | Spacing Destence

Due to synthesize these different variation, I use a 90cm Ă— 90cm board, which divided to 16 equal squares, and double layer frames to control these three variations.

There are five sizes iron wires to define different spacing distances and density. All

the wires were tied on one of two frames, the upper one will be pull up earlier and

the lower one later. So in the end wax will show servial forms due to different initial condictions. Step1 | Heat Wax & Pour into Mold

Step2 | Pull up First Layer

Step3 | Pull up Second Layer

Keelung is one of the earliest developed areas in Taiwan, are the living scenes of early natives and unite the memory of collective life. However, as time went by, these historic

buildings slowly weathered and eventually disappeared. Up to now, part of the historic buildings left only a small part of the remains for condolences.

Apart from public buildings, private buildings are actually Unfortunately, these private buildings often disappear without any trace and will never be remembered.

This Site is coverd on the Tianliao River as an open space for public use. Next to this site is Keelung port, cultural

center and bus transit center, all of these are important

public facilities. This project will maintain opening and link surrounding programs.

Therefore, this project raises the ground to a new ground

level, hiding the service programs underground. Then insert the two main volume, one is for exhabition and another for

public programs, such as library and auditorium. In the end, a huge membrane roof cover whole block, so there will be a Site Plan

Urban Strategy There are three major groups around

the site: schools on the north, Hsinchu

Science and Technology Campus on the southeast, and the residential area on the south of the site.

On the east side is Tou-chien River. Due to the lack of sports center, this project develop this riverside green belt as a sports park.

In order to satisfy the demand of these groups, six major programs : stations, libraries, community activity centers, open space , shopping streets and

office are configurated from west to

east in sequence. The stations also coconstructed with Dong-guang Road Bridge, hotels and parking lots.

Parametric Definition

1-2 | Upper layer units geometry

1-1 | Lower layer units geometry

This study use kangaroo2 of grasshopper to simulate the physical properties of the tensegrity system.

In the beginning we tried to define a basic unit. The

grasshopper components are divided into three parts. First, we use geometry to simulate the form of tensegrity.

Second, use Length and Strength component to apply

mechanical properties of the line segment to simulate rigid bars and ropes.

Third, convert the data generated by Bouncy Slover's GoalFunction Output back to real geometry, the

geometric properties of lines and pipes would be given. Furthermore, we tried to replace the lower layer

ropes with a film, and the structure was arched by the different strength of tension between the film and the ropes to creat required space .

2-4 | Location

Set the location of the structure with OnPlane component 39

2-1 | Rigid rods & vertical lines

Parametric Adjustment

There are three main parameters to control the final form of this structure prototype : Lenth (the length of the structural unit),

Height (the thickness of the structure), and Scale (the ratio of the

size of the upper and lower layers). These three parameters can be adjusted to adjust the final geometry type to fit the size of the site or the required function.

3-2 | Data Output

Translate simulation results to real geometry properties 2-2 | Upper layer lines

Use Rod component to give the elasticity and hardness properties Use Coincident component to put the end of the cell to the edge of the neighboring cell to simulate the relationship of the rigid rod fixed on the rope

Therefore, by adjusting the coefficients of scale by interfering with the gradient, the final pattern can be more different possibilities.
