Cancer Patients Find Help at LifeWorks

ifeWorks Wellness Center, one of the foremost alternative health clinics in the U.S. is experiencing considerable success in treating cancer patients with Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT). As they walked out of the gym together one day, Ashley turned to Alex and said “We have to help people the way you’ve helped me.” Eager and enthusiastic, they began their business in a one-car garage. Over almost seven years they have steadily expanded, one community at a time, most recently taking their success from the New Tampa location they sold and transferring it to a satellite AAP Fitness in Palm Harbor (Eastlake/Clearwater). Ashley: The main thing was that he made it easy to understand—what I had to eat, how I had to fuel my body, and the importance of weight training. Females have this notion that working out is only cardiovascular. Because they’re not comfortable with weights they gravitate towards cardio. They know how to walk on a treadmill. It’s easy, and it’s their comfort zone. Alex taught me how to break out of that and really build my body up, build my muscle, burn fat with weights, and then he aggressively helped me with the nutritional aspect of it. He took me on shopping trips, taught me how to read labels, and how to read ingredients. Teaching and educating people are really the firm foundation of our business. We teach our clients how to live a healthy lifestyle. That’s what he did for me, and now we do it for them. Alex: You have to find out what the person’s vice

is, and then you go around that and try to correct it at the same time. We all have different vices and addictions, particularly when it comes to food. We have to be able to work with the person’s individual needs and all their individual vices. But that is the key to be able to have people stick to it, and really go through it, and come out a success story. What is an example of a common vice people have? How would you help someone work around it? Alex: An example of a common vice would be somebody who has a routine. They are rushed in the morning, they have no time, and they pass by Starbucks or McDonalds. They are consuming addictive substances—the processed grains, sugars, and chemicals. But that is all ingrained in part of their routine. They associate that with convenience, and, believe it or not, with pleasure. The way you break that is you start walking them through a step-by-step approach that modifies their pattern. For example, if you’re still going to drive through McDonalds just get the egg mcmuffin instead of the double size with extra pancakes. Next time, you’re going to take out the cheese. The next step would be to just take out one of the buns. Ashley: It’s like a weaning process. What is an initial assessment with AAP Fitness Palm Harbor

like? How does it differ from those offered by local gyms? Ashley: Alex and I do our assessments together. When people come in to meet with us, the first thing I try to do is get to know them on a deeper level. Alex and I want to get an understanding for what this person is going through. That gives us an idea of what angle to approach that person from and how to motivate them. Alex: The biggest thing in the assessment is to understand the psychology of the person. From there we will be able to see if their goals are realistic. For example, say a wife or a husband comes in and says, “Well my goal is to lose X amount of weight.” When asked why, they usually look around and say, “Well because my wife wants me to.” Right there they are setting themselves up for failure. But if someone comes in and says, “I really want to be healthy for my family. I want to have kids, I want to watch my grandkids and great grandkids grow old, and I want to be an example for everybody,” that’s success right there. They’re ready to succeed. That’s why you have to understand where people are coming from. Ashley: And help them define what realistic goals are. Goal setting is huge. Alex: The other part of the assessment—the physical—is the easy part. We do a body fat analysis, and we always do a 9-site calibration, which is very important. It’s very thorough. Alex: Once we get to know the person (usually it takes about one to two sessions to actually go through the training session which is about an hour and fifteen minutes), we really find out how they react. What are their cardiovascular conditions, their muscular endurance? All of those aspects come into play. And we also see how they recover. After the second or third session, we then design the client’s projected exercise protocol which is for about two to three weeks ahead. You have a goal for the long term (a 12 week plan for example), but you always want to cut it down into weekly sessions. That gives you the ability to adjust the plan if needed. It’s a very dynamic approach. Usually, after they go through a six- or twelve-week cycle of training, at that point I can solidify the next cycle, evaluate how successful it will be, and predict the outcome with a little bit more ease. What programs does AAP Fitness Palm Harbor offer? Ashley: We offer one to one personal training and small group training. Small group training is very interesting. The client has the ability to have everything that one to one training offers, only it’s done in a small group setting. Everyone is not doing

the same workout. They’re all following individualized protocols but they’re ok doing it together. So they save money. A lot of people assume that personal training is an expensive and unaffordable venture. That’s very far from true. We offer the small group training for that fact. We also do the nutritional programs a la carte. So, if you just want to focus on the nutrition, you can work with Alex on that part. We do shopping trips. If you can bring three or four of your friends together, you get a discounted group rate for the trip. We cover everything— cleaning products, personal care, food, everything. There is something for everybody. Anyone who hires us for training, whether it be one to one training or small group training, everything is included. Alex: We did a study back in 2009 with one of our business advisors. Only 15 percent of our clients had a combined household income of over $100,000. People often think they have to make a lot of money to get healthy, but that’s not the case. We have had well over 30 people in the last three years alone working with Walmart. There’s never an excuse not to get healthy. How does the text and e-mail support that your clients receive help them? Ashley: That’s another “WOW” factor for us. When a client comes to us and they train, it’s very important that

they understand that they can talk to us more than two or three times a week when they’re in the gym, depending on how often they’re there training with us. The biggest thing that we offer is “Text us if you need us. E-mail us.” They can call us, but the text is really quick. It’s easy and we are always accessible. Our clients utilize that to the fullest. A lot of them text us when they’re going out to restaurants or to a last minute get together. Alex: Some people travel. They will tell us that, for example, they’re going to be staying at the Marriott in Boston, or anywhere. They will ask: “What can I do to exercise? What can I eat in the local restaurants?” I’ll do research for them. I’ll call and ask what type of equipment is in the hotel’s gym. If the hotel doesn’t have a gym, there’s always a local gym somewhere. Then I e-mail them a protocol—basically what I call “control damage.” It’s hard to be working, to be stressing out, to be traveling— particularly for someone who is learning.

That’s how we guide them by the hand. If they go on a cruise or a vacation, we e-mail them. A lot of people have smartphones now. I’ll e-mail them a workout protocol and they’ll look at the exercises with a live link they can click on to see a demonstration. Ashley: Another thing I do is randomly text all of our clients all of the time, just congratulating or motivating them. You never know when a person is down, having a bad day, or struggling. That one text can pull them up and motivate them. That’s a big part of what we do: we stay in touch with our clients all the time. What are your plans for both the short and long term? Ashley: Our goal is to build up in the Palm Harbor community. We want to get to know the people on an individual basis, to get to know their families, and to just really grow. re you feeling exhausted mentally and physically? Do you feel like you just never have any time to spend on yourself? Are you feeling depressed? Do you try on at least three set of clothes before you go out and then go back to black, hoping that it will make you look thinner but you know deep inside it doesn’t. If this sounds like you, there may be one little word you need to add to your vocabulary for 2013. You will never have the body you want if you do not learn this one word. It’s not “believe”. It’s not “desire”. It’s not “goals”. So, what is it? It’s the word “No”. Many women are nurturers by nature. Some women feel like they have to take care of everything because if they don’t things will fall apart, or they are not a good parent if their children don’t get all of the attention, or their boss is entitled to basically run them like a slave. The truth is we all have

roles that we have chosen in life i.e. wife, mom, nurse, teacher, friend. But you also have another role and that is the role of an “individual”. Somehow many ladies think somewhere in their mind that it is somehow selfish that they need time to renew themselves. But let’s look at it for a while... When you don’t take care of yourself and you allow others to hand you all their “monkeys” (i.e. problems), what kind of effect does that really have on all the other people in your life? Have you ever been in a great mood but then you get around someone who is constantly depressed and unhappy with themselves? How does that make you feel? If you are not feeling good about yourself when you interact with family, friends, husband or when meeting new people how does that affect you and them? What does that make your home

like? And would you want to live with someone like that. The chemistry? It sucks! If you do not set the priorities in your life then others will set them for you. You need to decide what are my one or two top priorities in each of my roles this week. Some weeks you may not have any priorities in some roles. Your time will get filled either by your design or by default or by someone else’s priorities. One of your priorities should always be to do what Stephen Covey, author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People calls “Sharpening the Saw”. This is your role of renewal. Some ladies say I don’t have time to sharpen the saw, I am too busy sawing. Their self esteem keeps spiraling down lower and lower. They get more and more health problems and feel more and more depressed as their self-esteem takes a beating. They live lives of quiet desperation. They treat themselves like they would not even treat a replaceable car. They are maintaince free until they break down.

Now does that sound very noble? You can make minor change happen by working on attitudes and behaviors but you can make quantum changes by changing the way you see things. Sometimes we get so caught up we do not realize that some of our closely held beliefs are lies. It is not noble to drive yourself into the ground. Learn to say “No”. It is not noble for you to spend your life insecure, depressed and not feeling good about yourself. I hope that I’ve inspired you today to evaluate your priorities and to start putting yourself towards the top. Let everyone know that you will not be available during these times. This will not only train you but it will train the other people in your life. And guess what? The world will not explode if you spend a little time for yourself. You will be a better mom, wife, and better in all of the other roles you have decided to play in life. Be unstoppable in 2013!

When I dance I feel myself integrate and become aware of my thoughts, feelings, problems, issues and solutions. I tap into my heart and reach deep into my soul into the depths of being alive. I let myself experience the freedom and victory of self-expression. My body experiences renewal and regeneration through the movement, music and choreography. Creative expression such as movement, dance, writing and painting can transform our painful reactions to traumatic situations. This offers and provides a renewed strength of identity and a way to give voice to difficult thoughts and feelings. Art, whether we create it or admire it from other artists - can inspire and remodel our inner realities. In her article “Giving Life to Carl Rogers theory of Creativity” Natalie Rogers writes that “using the expressive arts gives people a safe place to explore their shadow side…The shadow is the part we have repressed in our lives. Some people have denied their anger and rage for a lifetime.”Referring to expressive arts therapy, she says “The creative process is a life force energy. If offered in a safe, empathic, non-judgmental environment,

it is a transformative process for constructive change…Using movement, sound, color and drama offer opportunities to first become aware of one’s shadow, and then to explore it fully through many media.” As human beings we have natural propensity and love of beauty. nger is a powerful emotion. Anger is the one emotion that seems to flare up quickly and come out of nowhere! Other times we know exactly who and what circumstances causes us to be and get mad. If the world or those other people would just stop… Sound familiar? The problem with anger is not the emotion itself but understanding the why, how, and what to do with it. Anger is the one emotion people have difficulty with because it is not a feel good emotion. It doesn’t feel good in the body and is intense so we try to get rid of it quickly. The only problem is the method; we yell, scream, hit something, punch the wall, punch someone else or kick the dog to do it. This is instant gratification except minus the illicit drugs and alcohol use! We are in the moment not getting a desired outcome, perceive it’s due to outside forces and then need to do something about it but can’t with this yucky feeling, hence the immediate need to dispel it and get it out of the body. Surely we aren’t responsible for this intense feeling in the chest or gut, or are we?

Most of us are just a bunch of wonderful people running around our world doing the best we can. Most of us do not wake up in the morning with the thought of, “how can I act like an idiot today and behave really badly!” So what creates anger? There are two views that are helpful for understanding anger and how to reduce the feeling so you can attend to what it is you’re wanting and go about it more peacefully. First of all, throw out the need and demand that other people

must get, understand or agree with your point of view or change what they’re doing so you can feel ok in your world. It can be a big plus when this happens. But most of us have preconceived views (which stems from learning, influences and genetics) with a demand about how our world should go. This view that “demandingness of thought” vs. “ preferences and desires” creates emotional disturbance or keeps people stuck is based on Cognitive Behavior Therapy (notably Albert Ellis, PH.D.) That’s why couples have huge arguments over “putting the cap back on the toothpaste”. It’s not really the toothpaste cap! Second, that anger is caused rather than created. For example, if asked where does happiness come from? The usual answer is “from within”. We like to own happiness because it feels good so we must be responsible. However, no one can make you happy-it is a mental state of being that has a physical component within the body. Without feeling one cannot experience his/her thoughts or what they are creating. Anger too is an emotion just like happiness. It has a physical component that stems from thought and perception; just a different set of thoughts hence a different emotion is experienced. Another view of anger can be best understood through animal behavior. If monkey is having a nice day eating a banana with his girlfriend and another monkey comes over to mess with his girlfriend, what does monkey boyfriend do? Lunges forward to bite. What he actually is saying is “hey, don’t mess with my girl, don’t eat my bananas, don’t eat my young and get off my land”. Anger therefore is

an emotional and physiological response to perceived threat similar to anxiety in the animal kingdom (Rapid Resolution Therapy, J. Connelly, PH.D.). Perceived because rabbit could see a fox, freeze, gear up for flight and flee but not be in any actual danger because fox is full having had 2 squirrels. In other words, humans can have thoughts about their environment but have the ability to reason and make other decisions. Acting out on anger is for immediate gratification of the intense feelings and never actually resolves the issue. In addition, when someone is yelling or screaming how easy is it to get them to listen or for you to be heard. All one experiences is the intensity or the spewing as it were of the emotion. Moreover, how easy is it to feed someone

who is vomiting? This is why people rarely get to resolving an argument while it is happening. Finally, how does one redirect to be heard and understood in a more effective way? • Begin by noting sensation in the body by becoming aware of the emotion you are feeling and note the sensation as just a sensation. Like monkey, this now is your opportunity to do something about it. • Take a deep full breath to calm (“it’s just a sensation”) think of goal (peace and desire) gather your thoughts and recognize “I am wanting to do something about this differently”. • Next, be aware of what you are saying. Demands vs preferences; “I feel angry when” (accepting

responsibility for self first) vs. “you and what you are saying and doing make me angry when” (pointing fingers) … This makes room for flexibility and compromise vs rigid thinking and all or nothing thinking that tends to create conflict. • Follow the 70/30 rule. What if you are 70% right, that still leaves 30% room for change. After all, 1+1=2 but change one element in the equation and you will get a different answer. • Allow room to withdraw if getting too heated, you can come back to the table to discuss after time to calm. • It is good to start off with the motto “agree to disagree”. In the end, people want to be heard and understood not

necessarily agreed with. So ,it is important to have soft eyes and a caring demeanor especially with those who are closest and dearest to our hearts since these are the ones we are more likely to argue with . We can do so while be firm and assertive regarding our desires as well. The message will be you and I are important above all else, there is always a solution or perhaps compromise. Alison J. Kay W hen did you “get” that you are more than just your physical self? How did this impact you? For Alison J. Kay, PhD (AHHA Practitioner Member) of Palm Harbor, FL it had major impact on her career path. In 2007, when teaching a college psychology course at an international school while living amongst the Chinese culture who very much lives from the knowing that we are more than our physical selves, she was frustrated that the textbooks for psychology had such a strong influence in creating and perpetuating more people being afraid to listen inside to them26 January 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

She wanted to incorporate more Eastern approaches that honor the essential contribution that our souls, or spirits, and our consciousness make. Alison had been living in Asia, teaching English Literature and AP Psychology for 7 years by that point, overall living and teaching in Taiwan for 10 years, while traveling throughout South-East Asia, the Far East, and India during her breaks between semesters.

Alison moved to Asia to the international school in Taiwan after teaching in the public school system in Florida

After her first two years of full time classroom teaching, Alison was introduced to the opportunity of the international school system - not associated with the department of defense whatsoever - and jumped on the opportunity. Her intention was to combine her love of traveling - she’d already been a global traveler, and had since her senior year in high school and curiosity of the way other cultures live, and her desire to go to the source of cultures who acknowledged energy medicine, who understood and had developed systems and practices with which to cultivate and strengthen the use of subtle energies. Subtle energies, or chi, or prana, are the foundation to chi gong, yoga and energy healings. So off Alison went, continuing to teach full time, while investigate in her off time and treat other ex-pats with her energy healings, gradually culminating in Alison seeking her PhD as a holistic life coach as she watched her knowledge grow exponentially, and saw she was doing a lot more alongside her energy healing with her clients. A review of the many forms of energy medicine Alison has studied shows the wide variety out there. Alison has trained with the pioneering intuitive medic, Caroline Myss in energy anatomy and the chakra system. Alison holds traditional Usui Reiki Master Lineage certification and has a certification in the Tibetan energy medicine called Adamantine Healing System.

Alison has studied - and taught for 14 years now both Buddhist psychology of the mind and the Buddhist sutras in depth, and has initiated working with the Dalai Lama’s Mind Life Institute. Alison has trained in vipassana (insight), shamatha and Shambhala meditation practices within the Buddhist tradition, while also having training in Indian yogic meditation. Additionally, Alison is a Yoga Alliance registered yoga teacher and trained in India by a traditional school - the Himalayan Yoga Valley School - that included modules in each of the 8 limbs of yoga, as it was a traditional Ashtanga Yoga Training. She received instruction for how to instruct herself and others in daily meditation practice, pranayama, chanting, mantras, and Ayurveda - India’s ancient preventative medical science in health and longevity. Supplementing her Asian based energy medicine modalities, once she returned to the States, Alison has gotten formal training and certification as an Advanced Practitioner of ThetaHealing, as well as a Bars Practitioner with Access Consciousness. She has had training and certifications in the Emotional Freedom Technique, North American herbalism, flower essences, Chinese herbalism, and vibrational medicine. All of this learning culminated in Alison’s recent completion of her PhD as a Holistic Life Coach. What began as the dissertation when completing this degree became an insightful look at our history of beliefs

relying on science for our answers, where we are now discovering that there is more to be had beyond what science can prove, and what’s next. She points out the discoveries of the new sciences and how they align with - and in many cases validate - what the ancient Eastern cultures know about life force energy and the human system, and thus the mind-body connection. So Alison converted this information into a book on how we’re missing much in our American - and Western - system by still relying on an outdated science and medicine that deals primarily with the physical, as we move into a new time that is clearly about energy - as quantum physics have reflected for

the past 150 years. By Deserie Valloreo Inappropriate antibiotic use is generally considered to be the primary cause of antibiotic resistance in the community. Multiple economic factors, at the level of physicians, patients, healthcare organizations, and pharmaceutical companies, foster poor antibiotic use. A study titled “Economic issues and antibiotic resistance in the community”, found that financial returns on broad-spectrum antibiotics far exceed the return on narrowspectrum antibiotics for pharmaceutical companies. This study also indicated that directed marketing to both providers and patients may have contributed to the increase in prescribing of more costly and broader-spectrum antimicrobials. Acute respiratory infections are among the most common diagnoses resulting in primary care visits. Although these respiratory infections are mostly viral and do not respond to antibiotic therapy, patients are often prescribed antibiotics for these illnesses. Given the concerns for antimicrobial resistance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) launched a national campaign, in 1995, to promote more appropriate antibiotic use. Information from the CDC and other advisory groups explicitly states that antibiotic treatment of adults with nonspecific upper respiratory tract infections, acute bronchitis, or cough, regardless of duration, does not enhance illness resolution and is not recommended.

What is for Pain/Inflammation ?


Therapeutic Laser (TL) uses a concentrated beam of light, that when placed on specific areas of the body, quickly reduces pain and inflammation and produces a healing effect on the body with no side effects (not used on eyes). Concentration of photons of light is a natural form of healing, the human body responds to it very positively and quickly. Therapeutic Laser is a pain-free form of therapy without burning or increase of tissue temperature. Lasers are widely used in the medical field such as: surgical lasers, dermatology and dental but these lasers are NOT considered “therapeutic”. Therapeutic Lasers (TL) also known as Low Level Laser(LLL) or Cold Lasers has been used safely in Europe and Asia for over 30 years. Over 2000 double-blind studies (in-vitro & in-vivo) worldwide has proven its non-invasive, non-toxic quality and in many cases the ability to replace pharmaceuticals

and surgery. In the last seven years it has gained more acceptances in the US by the medical community with approval from the FDA. In the Tampa Bay area, Therapeutic Lasers have made their way into the offices of Acupuncturists, Podiatrists, Chiropractors, Veterinarians and in professional athletic teams for healing soft tissue injuries and for pain relief.

By now you might be asking yourself, “If this is such a fantastic therapy why haven’t I heard of it?” Very simply, insurance companies do not cover Laser Therapy, so there’s very little motivation by the medical community to invest thousands of dollars in a TL and to provide a service that the patient has to fully pay out of pocket for ($65-$130).
