Ripon, Wisconsin:

A new day is dawning

Many people would just as soon forget 2010 and 2011. Awful economy, rough years, right? But, as they say, after every night dawns a new day. And for Ripon, that means some excitement!   Yes, this is a great time to be around Ripon. Why? Here are a few reasons. For several years, Ripon’s newest developments have sat largely idle. But as 2012 rolled in, it appeared each were ready to make some noise.   New hospital coming to Ripon’s East Town development? Check! New industrial and commercial expansion? Check!   How about at Sandmar Village, Ripon’s once-maligned south-side subdivision? After years of claiming just one home built, two new senior housing developments are being constructed. Check, check!   Even Ripon’s other housing development, Rolling Hills, is starting to see new homes built. Check!   Of course, you don’t need to be a real estate enthusiast to find excitement in Ripon. All you have to do is go have some fun around town!   Stroll down one of Ripon’s many trails — or stop downtown for some “shopping therapy.” Visit the Birthplace of the Republican Party, or enjoy a sample at Ripon’s cookie outlet store.   And after your trip around Ripon, take a short drive over to one of the neighboring communities, where you can go antiquing in Princeton, shopping in Berlin or enjoy a quick dip in Green Lake.   There’s plenty to be excited about in this area!   All you have to do is go discover it. Let us be your guide to that adventure.   Welcome to Ripon, and welcome to the Ripon Guide.

The past, present and future of the community

Historic Ripon:

Progressive thoughts, Progressive people

To make sense of Ripon today, one must first understand the community’s 168-year-old history. It’s a story of adventurers, visionaries and entrepreneurs undeterred by economic, political or climatic adversity. Ripon’s roots date back to 1844, when about 20 people moved up here from the Kenosha area, seeking to form a utopian community. Their village of Ceresco grew to 200. Among the common buildings they constructed were a communal “long house” and post office that exist today near Ceresco Park. Just east of Ceresco, settlers formed a second village. It was named “Ripon” after the ancestral home of founder John Scott Horner, who grew up in the English city of Ripon, Yorkshire. A rivalry between Ceresco and Ripon resulted in 1851

ABOUT

with Ripon prevailing and, during that same year, forming a college on top of a hill to attract “responsible” settlers to the area. Today, Ripon College is a distinguished private liberal arts college. Three years later, more than 50 citizens gathered on a cold, windy evening in the local one-room schoolhouse, entering as anti-slavery Whigs, Free Soilers and Democrats

and emerging as the first Republicans in the nation. Ripon grew quickly and attracted a large German and Polish population during the second half of the 19th century. Most of its settlers came from New England, New York and Pennsylvania.Today, growth is slower but still steady, with the 20-person village of Ceresco now enjoying a population of about 7,700.

ABOUT

Paper Enterprises; Ripon Printers, publisher of the Ripon Guide; and others. The city’s strong industrial base is bolstered by an equally robust commitment to education. Ripon’s public schools are among the finest in the state, with Ripon students consistently scoring above the national and state averages on standardized tests. Ripon’s class of 2011 ACT college admission test scores averaged 23.0, among the highest in the region and exceeding the state average of 22.0 and the 21.1 national average. Furthermore, 80 percent of Ripon’s class of 2011 had post-graduate plans that included higher education at either two-year or fouryear colleges. Most of Ripon’s 125 faculty members have master’s degrees or other advanced training, and they are assisted by paraprofessionals who provide low studentto-adult ratios in our personalized school environments. The school district operates four school buildings and a district office building. Educational services also are provided at four community sites. Ripon has continually updated school district facilities to provide quality learning environments.

real-world applications for their learning. Crossroads Academy, located in the lower level of the First Congregational Church building, provides a small, customized educational program for at-risk students in grades 8 to 12.

Technology is integrated throughout the school district. In addition to highspeed, wireless Internet in our schools, most classrooms have interactive Smart Boards, LCD projectors, document cameras, and other modern tech-

nology. All elementar y classrooms have sound amplification systems. All students in grades 3 to 5 have their own netbooks, and all high school students in grades 9 to 11 will have their own netbooks for the 2012-13

school year. The school district maintains a parent portal on its Web site so parents can obtain updated attendance, grading, and lunch-account information at any time as well as online payment options. Ripon’s children also grow up in a safe community, with independent sources identifying the Ripon Metropolitan Statistical Area as being among the safest area in the nation in recent years. Its abundant parks, pastoral mill pond, 13 churches, civic festivals, first-rate hospital, library with access to almost 30 other libraries, and of course, Ripon College — which is well into its largest capital campaign ever — provide residents with a community that is cultural, intellectual, safe, healthy, happy and wholesome.

ABOUT

The future of Ripon:

Big ideas, Big changes Ripon continues to build on its proud history and current success. In 2011, Ripon Medical Center announced it would be affiliating with Agnesian HealthCare of Fond du Lac, ensuring the community would continue to have a top-notch hospital serving its needs for years to come. The affiliation also cemented a dream hospital administration hoped to bring to reality for years: construction of a replacement hospital. In early 2012, it was announced the new structure will be constructed on Ripon’s east side starting this summer, featuring new departments and new technology. This isn’t the only exciting development Ripon has been looking forward to seeing, though. An already vibrant downtown filled with Italianatestyle buildings is receiving an infusion of private capital to fortify its architectural integrity while improving the central business district’s re-

Ripon Medical Center affiliates with Agnesian tail and hospitality offerings. This effort is due to the multi-million dollar investment of a private partnership between the city of Ripon and Boca Grande Capital LLC, which believes in downtown Ripon’s potential to be a premiere

destination for day trippers, conventioneers, vacationers and college visitors. Local volunteers’ efforts to revitalize downtown the past two decades have reaped great rewards, including $14 million in public and private investment that has

boosted property values more than 75 percent since the early 1990s. A few years ago, a group of Ripon citizens completed a project with the Ripon School District and Ripon College to turn the city’s major athletic field into one of

It was created a few years ago, after the city of Ripon added an additional 58 acres of prime developable land — some on a railroad spur and some with highway frontage — for industry and commercial businesses just east of the existing, 129-acre industrial park. Housing for new residents also is keeping pace with industrial and downtown development, as Ripon currently has two major subdivisions and several smaller ones being developed on its south and west sides. Ample-sized lots, near Ripon’s schools or hugging some of its highest hills, await people who seek a pro-active, entrepreneurial community that, according to a former executive director of the Ripon Community Development Corp.,“has the economic wherewithal to

Say ‘Hay’ — for fun EVENTS

Some unusual characters will camp out at WellSpring Farm just outside of Ripon during Hay Days, June 16 and 17 and will mosey into town during their stay. Returning visitors to this event should note the location has moved just down the road from the previous location to N5307 Brooklyn G Road, Ripon. Hay Days will bring buck skinners, Voyageurs, cowboys (and gals), pioneers, Native Americans, Civil War troops, and historic merchants to Ripon for a Living History weekend. Visitors are invited to learn about life in the 1800s from folks who appear to have stepped right out of the pages of a history book. Re-enactors dressed in period-appropriate dress will talk about their “experiences” in a time when Ripon was just setting down its roots. Not all of the action will be out at the ranch. On Friday evening, theVillage Green Concert in historic downtown Ripon will kick off the weekend’s activities with living historians in their 19th-century attire on hand.

On Saturday and Sunday, visitors are invited to WellSpring Farm to enjoy living history demonstrations, such as candle dipping and rope making that will give families a hands-on day of learning about our past. Hay Days is a unique opportunity to experience a simpler, if more rigorous, life in a time when our country was young. For more information, call the Ripon Chamber of Commerce at 920-748-6764 or visit www.ripon-wi.com.

Sweet day for kids

Cookie Daze will celebrate its 17th-annual children’s festival Saturday, Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Barlow Park. This year will feature a new activity: the Cookie Olympics. This will feature fabulously fun activities like a Flour Fling Relay, Cookie DoughThrow, Baker’s Balancing Act and Crazy Cookie Stack Up. The Olympics will take place throughout the day. Other highlights of this year’s festival include tons of free children’s activities, rocket launches in the Cookie Blaster Rocket Shop & Launch Pad, horsedrawn wagon rides, Happy Ness clowns, and the world famous cookie drops! Cookie drops are entertaining to watch, but even

more fun for children to participate in as they dash to gather thousands of cookies falling from the sky. Many prizes are awarded to children who find specially marked cookies and the grand prize winner receives a bicycle. Four drops are held throughout the festival, each for different age groups. Last year 9,000 cookies fell from the sky! Adults can have fun at Cookie Daze, too.The Bake &Taste competition for the best cookie takes center stage as cookies are judged on flavor, appearance and creativity. Festival-goers can sample each entry and vote for the “People’s Choice” cookie, while the “Best Presentation” award is given to the decorated booth voted most popular by visitors. With cookies at the heart of this fun, mostly free festival for kids of all ages, it truly is a sweet experience and a perfect day out for families. Cookie Daze was started after Ripon was named Cookietown, U.S.A. by former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson. The citizens of Ripon worked together to create what was then the world’s largest chocolate chip cookie. The creation’s size earned it a spot in the “Guinness Book ofWorld Records.” Thompson’s proclamation also noted that more than 50,000 people visit Ripon each year to buy Rippin’ Good Cookies, which are made at Bremner Food Group in Ripon. For more information about Cookie Daze visit www.ripon-wi.com or call the Ripon Chamber of Commerce at 748-6764.

Green Lake Festival of Music “Our 33rd season promises to be more exciting and musically diverse than ever before,” newly appointed Festival Director Jeffrey Harkins said. Top-quality performances are planned for June 8 to July 22 in a variety of venues, from the intimacy and warmth of Green Lake’sThrasher Opera House to the historic local Boston Barn. Since 2006, a free series of informal concerts coordinated with programs at local libraries, the Thomas E. Caestecker Family Series, has introduced children and adults to music. In addition, two other well-established programs will be offered again. The ASCAP-winning ensemble, the Amelia Trio, also will be on hand once again this

Located just 15 miles west of Ripon, the Princeton area was called “Pleasant Valley” by settlers in the mid-1800s drawn to its verdant landscapes, sparkling streams and abundant natural resources. Today, Princeton remains just as attractive, with an eclectic, historic downtown in addition to the same natural beauty the settlers found so appealing. Antique stores, specialty shops and restaurants are located throughout town, and most are just blocks from the Flea Market. The largest outdoor market in central Wisconsin is held Saturdays April to October in the City Park. Nature lovers enjoy nearby hiking trails. Three major public wildlife refuges are within an hour drive. Bicyclists may choose from more than 150 miles of bike routes winding through the scenic countryside. The Northwestern Trail connects urban and rural Ripon. The 2.75-mile abandoned railroad bed begins behind the Ripon Public Library and ends at Fond du Lac County’s western border off County Road PP. Parking is available at Ripon Public Library. The 5- to 10-foot-wide trail starts a block and a half north of downtown, and every quarter mile is noted with a wooden marker. It follows the meandering Silver Creek west to Washington Street. Riggs County Park, located east of Ripon just off Highway 23, also boasts several miles of trails with more to be added. Opened late in 2005 was a park entrance off Douglas Street, as well as additional walking trails.A park shelter, climbing rock and parking area were added in 2007. In 2010, the trails were connected, and a disc golf course was added. Another established walking/biking trail starts off Locust Road near County Road E north of Ripon and runs several miles to Green Lake County. Ripon College — learning for life A short walk up the hill from downtown Ripon is Ripon College, a liberal-arts institution listed in the top tier of National Liberal Arts Colleges by U.S. News and World Report; among the Best 376 Colleges nationwide by The Princeton Review; one of America’s Top 100 Colleges by Forbes; and among the Chronicle of Higher Education’s “Best Colleges to Work For.” Since 1851, the college has educated students of diverse interests and backgrounds to pursue lives of meaning, service and lifelong learning. Together with members of an intimate learning community, students experience a richly personalized education through which they live more fully and achieve more success. Ripon’s liberal-arts curriculum is designed to introduce students to a wide variety of disciplines with a focus on written and oral communication. The founders of Ripon College and the city of Ripon were essentially the same people, and that unique symbiosis continues to this day. The founders envisioned an academy of higher learning rising up from the Wisconsin prairie that would cleave to the highest educational ideals, thereby attracting some of the region’s best and brightest to the community to learn and to teach. The simple principles of inclusion, academic rigor and “town-gown” relations still guide the college. The lush, 250-acre campus features 26 build-

ings, nearly half of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The campus also includes the Ceresco Prairie Conservancy — 130 acres of native prairie, oak savanna, and wetland habitat with several miles of trails for hiking and biking. A recently completed project to make the upper campus pedestrian-only further enhanced
