SA’s battle of the boerewors
Vodacom Durban July kicks off
A celebration of seasons for Alberton models Saturday, 9 June began as a bright but chilly Saturday morning with the Alberton Figures Finesse students eagerly preparing for their Seasons Showcase and Graduation at the Bracken Park Hall. There was a junior and senior section in the showcase, as well as the second round of the semi-finals for the Interna-
tional Model of the Year. The finals for International Model of the Year will take place at the Roodepoort Youth Theatre on Sunday, 29 July. It was a busy day, beginning at 10am and ending at 4pm, with over 100 students participating. All of the seasons were represented in the showcase and the medley of colours was a treat for the
eyes to behold. Sedate shades of brown, startling shimmers of blue and green, and bright primary colours left the audience with something to talk about. The next big event on the calendar for the Alberton model and talent agency is the New York IMTA Convention where contestants from all over the world will congregate to compete in front of over
300 international talent agents. The team from Figures Finesse International Model and Talent Agency will send several of its own contestants to compete. Alberton resident Tieghan GriffinCoetzer will attend the convention and will compete for the Female Teen Actor of the Year title.

NOTE FROM THE
The majority of South Africa’s graduates face a real dilemma in the local job market – they generally cannot find employment because they need work experience and they cannot get work experience without a job. According to Statistics South Africa, in 2017, graduate unemployment rates in South Africa reached a 13-year high. The rise in figures has not abated, with unemployment amongst graduates in the first quarter of 2018 at 33.5% for those aged 15-24 and 10.2% amongst those aged 25-34 years. I am so encouraged to tell every unemployed graduate out their that your breakthrough is around the corner. You are one step closer to reaching your goals and dreams because you have a purpose. If you feel like giving up, listen to that inner voice that says to you, “You are one step closer to that employment. South Africa’s golden girl, Caster Semenya (25) won a gold medal in the 2016 Olympic Games 800 metres at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. Semenya won the 800metres race in a time of 1 minute 55.28.seconds and secured Team South Africa’s tenth medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. Despite the negative criticism that she suffered from the international media, questioning her gender and eligibility to compete in the women’s events at the Olympic Games, Semenya pulled through and won the race. Do not allow your circumstances to define you, because you are created to live for a purpose. You are one step away from walking into everything that God called you for - greatness and prosperity.
Thato Mhaula passed away BY: Garin Joemath Four-year-old Thato Mhaula died in hospital on Tuesday morning, 19 June, after he was shot in the head last Wednesday, 13 June. The shooting took place at about 7pm during an armed robbery at a spaza shop in South Hills, a Johannesburg suburb. The little boy was with his 10 year old brother at the spaza shop tame TIMES learned that the bullet damaged Thato’s brain. The doctors confirmed that he was brain dead, and he was on a life-support machine. The little boy was fighting for his life in hospital but did not make it. tame TIMES spoke to Clr. Faeeza Chame Ward 57 who said that too many Spaza Shops in South Hills are used as drug dens where school children hang out . “At this particular house shop everyday our school children will hang out there and use the pavements as a gambling platform. SAPS and JMPD must be more visible and these house shops should be inspected on a more regular basis,” added Chame. Chame further stated that law enforcement officers must start doing their job to inspect these shops and validate their legality. “If the shops don’t comply they must be closed down immediately,” concluded Chame. The family is devastated and tame TIMES is asking the community to pray for the family.
FCS Alberton is critically under-resourced The Family Violence, Child Abuse and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for Alberton, situated in Germiston is critically under-resourced. This was revealed through a Parliamentary reply. The FCS Unit has a shortage of • 250 rape kits, • 300 DNA collection kits, • 6 recording equipment for interviewing, • 1 vehicle, • 1 one-way mirror for interviewing, • 3 two-way radios and; • 1 laptops DA Deputy Chief Whip in the National Assembly and Lethabong Constituency Head, Mike Waters said that this situation is totally unacceptable. “This shows the lack of concern by the Government for the very units that investigate the rape and murder of chil-
dren and women of our country are brought to book,” said Waters. Last year alone 39 828 rapes were reported and of these a horrific 19 017 (41%) were child rapes. “It cannot be that the very units established to bring perpetrators to book do not have the basic equipment such as rape kits. What this means is that vital evidence needed to convict people will be lost forever. It is no wonder that as far as child rapes are concerned that only 1 in 3 result in a conviction.” “If we are to combat this scourge, we need political commitment, which will ensure we back up the rhetoric of fighting gender violence through the desperately needed funding,” concluded Waters.
Sy sê vir my:” R27 mam “. Bietjie uit die veld geslaan sê ek vir haar:” Yes, I know”.
Sinkhole in Louw Wepener street tame TIMES came across a sinkhole in Louw Wepener street right at the entrance of the Bella Chateau B&B in Alberante. Speaking to community residents, tame TIMES learned that the sinkhole is left in this condition for 5 weeks. Community members are upset because water is flooding down the street. Community members are unhappy that the municipality has not come and sorted out the sinkhole, after it was reported continuously.
Toe begin ek bietjie geirriteerd voel. Sy kyk my in die oë en sê:” No mam, I said TWENTY SEVEN RAND”. So asof ek dom en doof is. Maar mense, ek vererg my net daar. TWO THREE FOUR FIVE SIX SEVEN. Seven”.

Marais Viljoen se redenaars Joint Venture between Lusito sukses Association and St Martin’s Net so ‘n woordjie oor Marais Viljoen se praters oftewel redenaars en die redenaars sukses.
1ste Flippie Venter. 2 x 2de plekke Kayla Hovelmeier en Francois Krause. 3de Alexander Prinsloo 5de Mia-Cara Alberts.
6de x 2 Louise de Villiers en Izelle Oosthuizen 8ste Matthew Middleton 9de x 2 Lucile de Villiers en Anuske Prinsloo 10de Rone Pretorius.
After months of research, meetings and negotiations with various stakeholders and organisations, Lusito Association has entered into an agreement with St Martin’s School. Wednesday, 20 June 2018 was the beginning of this new partnership between the two entities. Lusito Association’s dream has been to own their own land, develop the land as well as have private schooling facilities for junior and senior students; creating a financially sustainable model for the Lusito Association for years to come. It is envisaged that the new St Martin’s High School and Prep School campuses will be built on a property of about 15 hectares which will be purchased from
the Lusito Association. The current high school campus in Rosettenville and the preparatory school located in The Hill, will continue to operate – St Martin’s is merely growing and establishing an additional campus in the New South. The agreement with Lusito kick-starts with Phase One – a process of investigations including environmental impact assessments, architectural work, site development and various other studies that need to be conducted. This day marked a milestone in their collective dreams and Lusito are proud to be partnering with an excellent educational institution – St Martin’s. The hugely exciting journey begins.

The greatest gift is to Mark Lottering tickles the funny help thy neighbour What’s happening
Mall of the South in conjunction with The Water King, the Gift of the Givers and the Johannesburg South community have been hosting the #HelpThyNeighbour Water Drive 2018 to help alleviate the Cape Town water crisis. With the recent rainfall in Cape Town, the dam levels have improved however as the City stated in the Cape Town Etc article: “…it is too soon to know what supply level is needed in order to safely navigate the summer of 2019. It is therefore critical that we continue to keep our consumption low.” Mall of the South Centre Manager, Hester Smith said: “It is with the immense generosity from our local community and businesses that we have managed to collect over 12.5 tonnes, which is over 3000 water bottles. Together we have truly made a difference and we cannot thank you enough.” Mall of the South would like to honourably thank the late Raj Naidoo and The Water King family for their continued loyalty and support with the water drive. The Mall of the South team worked close-
ly with Raj, especially with the water drive, and will continue with one of Raj’s passions to unite the community to work together and to help thy neighbour. The #HelpThyNeighbour Water Drive 2018 is therefore held in loving memory of the late Mr Raj Naidoo. A special THANK YOU goes to the following for the contributors towards the drive: Ant Production Management, Caxton Alberton Record, Southern Courier and Comaro Chronicle; EFS Fire and Security, Middelburg Preparatory School, Mike Lamb Photography, Mulbarton Primary School, our amazing shoppers, Pam Golding Properties Jo’burg South and Alberton, Quatro Cleaning and Security Services, South of Joburg Business and Tourism (SOJO) members, the Mall of the South centre management team, Wallstreet Interactive Digital Advertising Agency and Zenprop Property Holdings. Force (SANDF) to the places in need, such as: schools, orphanages, retirement homes and clinics . Last chance to enter SA’s battle of the boerewors Entries for the 2018 Championship Boerewors competition are open and with a new competition structure in place, it is now even more accessible for those with a special recipe for traditional boerewors up their sleeves. Boerewors enthusiasts who believe that their recipe has what it takes are invited to enter before Friday, 29 June 2018 to stand a chance of being crowned the 2018 champion.
The culinary experts at the South African Chefs Association (SACA) will once again oversee the judging process. All entries will go through a validation process to ensure that recipes adhere to the guidelines for making truly traditional boerewors. Once validated, paper judging will commence and the Top 30 recipes will be selected. Judging food competitions is no easy task, but the judges from SACA have been involved with the Championship Boerewors competition for so many years and, combined with their culinary expertise, can spot an exceptional traditional boerewors recipe from a mile away. During a rigorous judging and tasting process, the Top 10 recipes will be selected. These finalists will be
required to showcase their boereworsmaking skills at the finale on Wednesday, 29 August before the winner of the 2018 Championship Boerewors competition is revealed. Prizes are up for grabs from sponsors Coca-Cola, Wellington’s and Toyota, with the grand prize being a Toyota Hilux DC 2.8 GD-6 Raider worth over R516 000. Shoprite and Checkers are proud of the country’s boerewors tradition and celebrate it by hosting the annual Championship Boerewors competition. For the past 25 years, these two supermarket chains have embarked on a nationwide search for South Africa’s very best boerewors - creating a legacy of quality, taste and trust.
Entry details and more information about the competition can be found at www.championshipboerewors.co.za

ANDF rifle linked to cash-in-transit heist “....a decision was made that Counter Intelligence must conduct regular inspection on firearms and a guard duty system must be in place.” BY: Jenna Etheridge According to News24 reports, some South African National Defence Force (SANDF) officials fall foul of the law by losing or stealing official firearms and ammunition, and at least one of these weapons has ended up being used during a cash-in-transit heist, Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula revealed this week. She was responding to a parliamentary question by Freedom Front Plus leader and MP Pieter Groenewald. Groenewald wanted more clarity on details she previously gave him last year on how many SANDF weapons and ammunition were lost and/or stolen between April 2015 and September 2017. In the initial reply last year, it emerged that several pistols and revolvers were
lost or stolen in the above period, along with over 14 000 stolen ammunition rounds, two exercise hand grenades and 253 pencil flares. In her reply on Tuesday, Mapisa-Nqakula also revealed that an R4 rifle was recovered during a cash-in-transit heist, while a pistol and two R4 rifles were later recovered at a suspect’s house. She did not provide more details on when and where the recoveries had happened. It was also revealed that five theft cases involving SANDF firearms and ammunition were pending before courts for a decision and trial. Two cases have been finalised; one person was found guilty and sentenced to 18 months in jail or a R30 000 fine, while
an SANDF member was discharged from the defence force. Groenewald asked what measures the defence department was taking to prevent these crimes from happening. The department stated, in conclusion, that:
“During the security cluster meeting, a decision was made that Counter Intelligence must conduct regular inspection on firearms and a guard duty system must be in place.”
Armed robbery in Van Riebeeck Road Suspect caught for possession of dagga On Monday, 18 June, CPS SECURITY responded to an armed robbery in Van Riebeeck Road, Alberton North. Their control room received an alarm activation from a business premises. On their arrival, they encountered six armed suspects. The suspects opened fire at the reaction units and Alberton SAPS members who were doing a routine patrol. The suspects fled on foot after attempt-
A tip off from concerned members of Alberton led the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit members to a house on Voortrekker Street in Alberton where a man found in possession of heroin and dagga on Wednesday, 20 June. EMPD responsed swiftly and found that the man at the house was found in possession of ten(10) packets of heroin and seven(07) ziplocks of dagga. The suspect was arrested. The 33 year old arrested suspect was detained at Alberton police station on a charge of possession of drugs. He is expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court soon.
ing to take the client’s truck which was loaded with oil. Their tactical members were called for back-up and two of the six suspects were arrested after they were found hiding inside the Rand Airport facilities. Two unlicensed firearms were recovered. A third unlicensed firearm was also found on the scene. The getaway car was abandoned on the scene.
Perimeter security – what you should know as a business owner Criminals have become so brazen that physical security barriers and alarms alone are no longer the only deterrents that business owners can rely on. Entry methods have evolved from classic window breaking to criminals removing front doors completely. “When doors and windows pose too much of a challenge, they will enter through the roof. We’ve also experienced isolated incidents in which cement blocks in walls were removed so that criminals could gain entry,” says Agnieszka Gryn, Regional Executive Fidelity ADT. The good news is that as fast as these criminal modus operandi’s evolve so do the security technology and solutions to combat them. “We have seen a shift over the last five years, in terms of intruder detection, to using the Internet of Things and interconnected devices. Today, mobile security apps, outdoor detection beams, add-ons to electric fencing, CCTV, smart analytics technology, video alarm verification systems (when your alarm eye picks up movement, it takes a snapshot to show the operator whether it is an intruder or something else), integrated alarm systems, that are connected to the internet and can interface with other devices like turning on lights that are all part of security solutions on offer,” she
says. She adds that there has also been a move towards smart analytics technology, where cameras learn to differentiate between normal and abnormal behaviour. This cuts down on reaction times, user error and the amount of manpower to keep track of all camera surveillance systems. Perimeter security and access control remains the first line of defence. “We urge all business owners to consider installing outdoor detection devices and perimeter security to reduce the chances of criminals reaching your property and gaining access to the building. It needs to be seen as an investment not only in your assets but in your people too. Fortunately, technology, like CCTV for example, has evolved immensely over the last few years making it more affordable and more advanced than ever before.” Gryn says outdoor detection beams can be strategically placed around your property which will trigger the alarm before a criminal has the chance to get to the actual building. “Another alternative worth looking at is microwave Passive Infra-Red detectors which are specifically designed for very hot areas – such as a roof. Normal infra-red detectors are not as effective when installed in extremely hot areas,” she says.

Joburg arguably has one of the best winters in South Africa- albeit a bit fresh in the early morning, but with glorious sunny days. But the best kept secret, “slap bang” in the middle of South Africa’s winter months is eThekwini (aka Durban)- in the friendly province of Kwa-Zulu Natal. With its glorious tropical climate, temperatures averaging around 24 degrees with little chance of rain, there really isn’t a good reason not to take some time off and see what Durban has to offer. Now we can’t really refer to it as a “best kept secret” as the Vodacom Durban July attracts around 55, 000 people to Greyville Racecourse annually to enjoy a day of glitz, glamour and of course magnificent Thoroughbred racehorses, but this

6 years before I met this powerful spiritual woman S. MAMA SHIELA . I was UNHAPPY because my husband was cheating on me, our kids were always sickly and I had no-money! I tried everything from healers, priests & gurus but nothing seemed to work for me. I only wasted money. Luckily I saw two testimonials on local T.V. Station by an OLD MAN whose son S . MAMA SHEILA ACCURATELY READ MY FORTUNE and told me all my problems before I spoke a word to her. She used a mirror to SHOW FACE OF PEOPLE who were trying to pull me down. She performed a 1day special prayer for me, cleansed me from bad luck and also gave me powerful love
