VOORTREKKERWEG/ROAD: THE OLD AND THE NEW 1966: Uitsig oor Voortrekkerweg, vanaf South Crest na die sakekern van Alberton. Alberton se eerste wolkekrabber, Royal York, is eers in 1973 voltooi.

When you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. I agree with Marc Anthony on this one, being in the fortunate position to write every day. I will admit, it’s easier to be in this fortunate position when you had a decent night’s sleep and feeling blissful, with your thoughts focussed and not scattered all over the place. I’ve written a note a while ago about an interesting conversation with a friend. To my utter delight, he has written his own note in response to this note and gave me permission to publish it. It is a great honour to get some insight into someone’s thoughts. At tame TIMES, we have the honour of getting insight into the lives of the people of our community, so please keep sending us your stories!
oorstroom. 1966: View on Voortrekker Road from South Crest to the Alberton CBD. In 1966 the freeway hasn’t been built and the road was frequently flooded due to the causeway. Note the flowers on the ridge. Alberton’s first skyscraper, the Royal York, was completed in 1973. In 1979 when the freeway was built, the road was lifted and two bridges added to prevent flooding on the road.

EKURHULENI APPROVES CAP43ENTERTAINMENT
BUDGET The multi-year budget for 2016 to 2018 was approved by the Ekurhuleni Metro Council at a special council meeting on 28 April. The 2016/17 budget was presented by MMC for Finance, Moses Makwakwa and according to Councilor Neil Diamond – Whip Finance Oversight Committee, it was well received as a propoor budget – a budget for the people. Diamond says that the local government has a clear understanding of its mandate, which enabled the finance leadership to proactively advance the agenda of transformation, which includes pushing back the frontiers of poverty and inequality; democratizing the economy; empowering the disadvantaged; creating economic development; creating employment opportunities; initiating growth and development in line with the GDS 2050; improve the quality of life of the people; and the responsible allocation of resources to
create a better life for all.‘’This year, more than any other, the Ekurhuleni budget team were faced with economic challenges and a macroeconomic environment that has left many of people under financial pressure with low disposable income. The people of Ekurhuleni must rest assured knowing that Ekurhuleni is commitment to building a local economy through increasing procurement opportunities, job creation, and reducing unemployment and poverty within the city,’’ Diamond adds. Diamond concludes that the leadership of the city has committed to put the people first and engage with communities, deliver basic services in a more efficient and effective manner, strengthening and improving good governance and accountability, and ensuring sound financial management. Hygend hert mense.
Ek is byna dood.
Rudi Muller bederf Emmanuel
is Volbring". Hy sê dit maak nie saak van ons omstandighede nie, God se Lig skyn elke dag. Rudi skryf die meeste liedjies self. Elke lied geinspireer deur ondervinding of gebeure wat plaasgevind het. Hy sluit af met "Hoe Groot is God". Dit was weereens 'n heerlike samesyn en almal is huistoe met 'n lied in die hart.
FIGURES' WILD SIDE
Alberton Figures Model and Talent Agency hosted their graduation showcase with the theme: Animals of Africa. Brackenpark Hall was abuzz with excitement and activity early on the Saturday morning of 9 April. Alberton Figures Model and Talent Agency were hosting their graduation showcase with the wild theme: Animals of Africa. The stage backdrop was a perfect tiger print – all black, green and orange. The atmosphere was charged with raw energy as the youngsters put their final touches to their brilliant outfits – it looked like a scene out of Jumanji – wild animals everywhere. The Juniors opened the show with mind
blowing variations of wild animals, from elephants to leopards to peacocks, zebras and giraffes – sadly no rhinos, and the dancers entertained the audience with energetic animal-like sequences prior to the seniors finishing up the show in true African style. Places for best dressed were decided by the judges, as well as Mr and Miss Congeniality. The top scoring graduating students were also announced. This showcase was truly a great show of African animal spirit.

Blend the cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, and vanilla with an electric mixer until smooth. Gently fold in the whipped cream. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or non-stick skillet over medium heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 2 tablespoons for each crepe. Tip and rotate pan to spread batter as thinly as possible. Flip over when the batter is set and the edges are beginning to brown. Cook until the other side begins to brown. How will you make mom’s day?
Coconut and LIME SUGAR SCRUB Short of time and strapped for cash, but still want to give your mom something special this Mother’s Day? Here’s the answer! The gifts you made yourself are always the ones that your mom loves most. This Mother’s Day, you can pamper her with a delicious-smelling and skin-smoothing sugar scrub made with just three inexpensive ingredients. What you’ll need: 1 cup unrefined/raw/brown sugar 2 tablespoons coconut oil (if you can’t find this in the food section, try your PnP pharmacy) The juice of one or two seedless limes (4 tablespoons) A clean, empty jam jar with the label removed, or a Consol preserve jar (available at Pick n Pay) A small piece of pretty fabric A ribbon A piece of coloured paper A pen Some glue How to make it: Fill your jar about two-thirds with the sugar and add the coconut oil. (You may need to microwave the oil for a few seconds to make it liquid.) Squeeze in the lime juice. Stir
Handmade Ornaments 1.
well until all the sugar, oil and juice are mixed. Almost fill the jar with sugar and stir again. Put on the lid. Cut a piece of the fabric into a square large enough to cover the lid and tie in place with the ribbon. Create a label in your curliest writing (and perhaps a nice message for mom) and stick it onto the jar. Good ideas: Since it’s so cheap and easy to make, why not tell your mom it’s a magic pot of sugar scrub – whenever she finishes it, she can simply give it to you and you’ll return it full again. For a variation on this (and if you can’t find limes or coconut oil) try a lemon and olive scrub, using 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 4 tablespoons of lemon juice.
The first thing to do is to mix up your salt dough. I have a recipe that I love and always use. You can find that recipe if you click through here. This recipe hasn’t failed me yet. The kids were able to mix up all the ingredients and roll it out. I love having this Wilton Fondant 9 Inch Rolling Pin because it has guides on the ends that help you roll your dough or fondant to an equal depth. It makes rolling things out evenly for kids (and adults) very easy.

RASPBERRY JAM DOUGHNUTS
cup milk, just above body temperature (105 F) 2 ¼ tsp (1 pkg) instant dry yeast cup sugar 3 eggs at room temperature 3 ½ cup all-purpose flour
DIRECTIONS 1. Add the milk, yeast, sugar and eggs to a bowl and blend slightly. Add the flour, salt and nutmeg and blend by hand or in a mixer fitted with the hook attachment. Immediately start adding the butter a bit at a time and continue to mix until the dough comes together. If using a mixer, continue to knead the dough until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes and if mixing by hand, once the dough becomes to difficult to stir, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead by hand until smooth and elastic. Place the dough into a lightly oiled bowl, cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rise for at least 2 hours, or chill and let rise overnight. 2. Turn the risen dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out to 1/2 –inch thickness. Use a doughnut cutter or 3-inch cookie cutter to cut out 12 doughnuts, re-rolling the dough if needed. Place the doughnuts onto a parchment-lined baking tray, cover the tray with plastic wrap and let the doughnuts rise for 45 minutes, if using room temperature dough or for an hour if using a cold dough. 3. Pour the oil into a tabletop deep fryer (following manu facturer’s instructions) or into a large, deep

Fit in as many doughnuts as you can, but with enough room that they have at least an inch between them. Fry the doughnuts for about 4 minutes, then flip over the fry for another 4 minutes. Use your slotted spoon to remove the doughnuts onto the cooling rack to drain. While still warm, dip the doughnuts in the cinnamon sugar to coat, and then return to the rack to cool completely. 4. To fill the doughnuts, spoon the raspberry jam into a piping bag fitted with a doughnut tip (also known as an éclair tip) or a medium plain tip. Insert the tip into the doughnut and fill with about a 2 tsp of the jam. The doughnuts are best enjoyed the day they are made.
Once it is all rolled out, use a 2 inch flower cookie cutter. The Transfer the flowers to a baking sheet. To make the center of the flower, add beads. They are now ready to bake. Bake these at 250 for 2-3 hours. kids each made a few for themselves. Keep your eyes on them to make sure they don’t get too brown and that the beads are melting a bit before removing them from the oven.
Once the flowers are cut, they will use their fingers to press in each petal. We used a drinking straw to cut out the holes The final step is to paint them once they are fully cooked and cooled. Any craft paint would work so that the flowers would be able to be hung.

RISING SOCCER STARS AT THE SEEFF OLA SOCCER TOURNAMENT
With great weather and a massive turnout, the Seeff Ola Soccer Tournament was a success on Wednesday 27 April at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. Hosted at the Rietvlei Soccer Astro Fields,
the tournament saw boys aged between six and 16 play their hearts out. The young soccer champs showed some soccer skill and had fun.
Equipping young entrepreneurs
to soar to new heights With the right attitude, young schoolleavers and university graduates can say goodbye to the idea of working for a boss. Entrepreneurs can be successful at any age,” said local business guru JP Prinsloo, owner of stage and lighting company PriFactor. “With the right attitude, and a desire to succeed, no dream is too big.” Prinsloo gives four keys to ensuring you make it as an entrepreneur: 1. Enjoy what you do Do you know what Richard Branson, Bill Gates and other mega-rich businessmen have in common? They love what they do. Not only is it easier to enjoy what you’re doing when you’re working for yourself - it’s absolutely crucial. The minute you start finding the work a slog, you might as well kiss goodbye to your venture. 2. Work hard “Hard work never goes away,” said Prinsloo, who has built his events business from scratch. “It means spending days and nights building up your network of contacts, rubbing shoulders with the right people and establishing your brand.” 3. Never let people mess you around Being young and inexperienced can often mean you’re at the mercy of clients and contractors who are older than you and will
use their experience to their advantage. The key? Don’t let people routinely get their way. As soon as you stand your ground and start sticking up for what you believe in, you’ll build up a reputation of being firm and forthright. There’s nothing worse than being viewed as a pushover. Of course, if you’re in the wrong, have the decency to admit you’ve made a mistake and be the bigger person. Being a businessperson is about building relationship as much as anything, so be firm - but be fair. 4. Don’t be afraid to take risks Risk-taking is a big part of entrepreneurship. It means the idea of giving up a steady pay check and sacrificing your personal capital to make a success of your venture. It means taking a punt, and sometimes pushing yourself further than you ought to. It means building a brand with limited resources, and taking on clients you barely have time in the day to service. “I love the risk-taking aspect of it,” Prinsloo said. “It’s about gambling with what you have - but when you’ve got so much more to gain than to lose, what’s there not to love?” Prinsloo believes that as long as you learn from your mistakes, and remember to stay humble, risk-taking will help you get to the next level.
exercise can help
YOU QUIT SMOKING
03 May 2016
With April the month of health awareness, it’s yet another reason to try and kick that cigarette habit. Though smoking is on the decrease, there are still an estimated 7 million people in South Africa aged 18 or older who need their fix. Nicotine is a powerful drug that develops dependence in its users, and it’s ranked third on the list of the world’s most addictive substances, behind hard drugs like crack cocaine and heroin. Now a new wave of people are discovering the proven benefits of exercise in their quest to kick the habit. While smoking aids like e-cigarettes and nicotine gum end up prolonging the dependence on nicotine, exercise is a potent alternative to the craving, and helps develop a healthy mind and a healthy body. Here are five ways getting active can help you break the habit for good: 1. EXERCISE RELEASES ENDORPHINS Endorphins are a group of hormones secreted within the brain and nervous system that produce a “feel-good feeling”. As it turns out, endorphins are also a good way of suppressing the craving for a cigarette. “We see it all the time - when people get in the gym, they leave their vices at the door,” says Ivana Buchanan, group training specialist at Zone Fitness. When it comes to smoking, the endorphin rush of a good workout is an effective way of beating your craving. 2. EXERCISE GIVES YOU A LONG TERM GOAL TO STRIVE FOR Having something to work towards gives you a sense of purpose, and a set of
goals will give you a
long-term goal that will trump the need to smoke. The idea of working towards a goal over a period of time will also give you the focus you need to avoid slipping back into your old habits. And once you start seeing the healthy changes your body goes through, it’ll help motivate you to keep going too. 3. EXERCISE IMPROVES YOUR MENTAL WELLBEING “The nicotine addiction is physical, yes, but a great deal of it is mental too,” says Buchanan, who has seen first-hand the benefits clients reap from the emotional stability of exercise. Exercise can help you cultivate a healthy mindset and will focus your energy in living in the present and not seeking alternate satisfaction, Buchanan says. 4. EXERCISE CREATES A SUPPORT GROUP AROUND YOU The gym is ultimately a community, according to Buchanan. “Finding someone to exercise alongside is a great way of staying motivated.” And that means not only achieving your fitness goals, but also keeping on a cigarette-free path. A person at your side will empathise with your struggle. Plus, knowing you have someone who will be disappointed if you give in to the cravings is a huge motivator. 5. EXERCISE EASES BOREDOM Believe it or not, boredom is a potent reason for lighting up in the first place, but instead of reaching for a stray cigarette, concentrate on keeping active. If you’re bored at work or have an hour free, hit the gym, or concentrate on doing simple exercises at your desk. You’d be amazed what you’ll achieve performing leg raises while you’re seated behind your laptop. Resist the urge to indulge that cigarette break. Get up from your desk if you need to change of scenery and go for a brisk walk instead, or take an hour out of your day to stay active. You’ll wind up being more productive on the job in the long run.
CAR FINANCE: DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST
Traditionally, South Africans have leaned towards bank financing when buying a vehicle but there are a more options which can be explored today, such as leasing. “Almost a third of consumers are leasing their vehicles in the US already but the concept is relatively new here,” said Les Mc Master, chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA). “It has advantages for South Africans in light of rising interest rates, fuel hikes and a shaky Rand,” he said. He explained the main difference between a lease and an instalment agreement was that in a lease agreement the buyer would not own the vehicle at the end of the term, but could renegotiate the contract to take ownership for the residual value. Lease contracts were also for shorter terms. “Generally, buying a car, paying it off and then keeping it for many years, remains the least expensive way to go because despite the fact that vehicles depreciate over time, they do retain some value that you can apply towards buying another car,” he said. “If you lease a vehicle, you only drive it for a
fixed period and your monthly payments go towards paying for the depreciation in the vehicle, not ownership. Lease agreements also come with restrictions on how many kilometres you can do during the lease period.” Mc Master encouraged prospective buyers to do their homework first; research the options and always be aware of the fine print. “Bank finance can be costly as a large chunk of the monthly instalment goes towards interest payments. Banks also want to know that you have a spotless credit history and that you can afford the monthly payments on a vehicle,” said Mc Master. “It’s a mistake to base your affordability on the repayment only. Research has shown that in the current market conditions, the actual monthly instalment of an entry-level vehicle accounts for less than 50 percent of the total cost of ownership.” He explained buyers must also budget for fuel, maintenance and insurance before deciding to go ahead with the purchase of a vehicle. “Another crucial consideration is deciding on a linked or fixed interest rate: Once you’ve signed the contract, this can’t be changed.”
The top five Dos and Dont’s for prospective vehicle buyers Do... 1. Draw up a budget to establish affordability. 2. Leave enough spare cash in your budget to absorb rising costs, such as fuel and interest rates. 3. Take the time to read and understand your finance contract. 4. Contact the bank if you are in a situation where you cannot meet your financial commitments. 5. Make sure you always have comprehensive insurance on your financed vehicle.
Don’ts... 1. Overextend your budget. 2. Provide the bank with false information about your affordability. 3. Cancel insurance when you are in a financial bind. 4. Rely on a large balloon payment to make your instalments more affordable. 5. Forget to include all costs in your mobility budget: petrol, insurance, and maintenance.

NEW SUV ERA
Set to be launched in South Africa towards the end of 2016, the new Volkswagen Tiguan is a great all-rounder with distinctive styling which redefines its class and confidently points the way to the future. Kicking off the comprehensive Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) offensive by Volkswagen, the new Tiguan is the first Volkswagen SUV to be based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB). It sets new standards in design, comfort and functionality without compromising its off-road capabilities which have been enhanced with a rugged all-wheel drive system that includes premium class technology for use on and off the highway. The new Tiguan is fast becoming a fan favourite in the international media scene – in the latest comparative test conducted by the largest motoring magazine in Germany, Auto Motor und Sport, the new Tiguan was chosen as the best SUV in its segment against its direct competitors. Recently, Auto Bild Allrad, Europe’s largest magazine for off-road vehicles, announced the new Tiguan as the 2016 “All-wheel Car of the Year”. The new Tiguan also won the “2016 Design Trophy” in the SUV category from Auto Zeitung, German’s special interest magazine. The new Tiguan engine line-up and retail prices for the South African market will be announced closer to the launch date.

MSSA national team trials
The 2016 season has seen no less than 210 gamers qualify for the National Team Trials to be held on 4 June 2016. The majority of those who qualified reside in Gauteng. At this moment in time, it can thus be revealed that the Trials shall be held in Gauteng. MSSA is awaiting clubs to revert to MSSA as to their ability to host such Trials. However, MSSA is delighted in the increase in both standard and quantity of gamers. For the team events alone (CS: GO, DotA 2, and League of Legends) there are no less than 38 teams that made the grade. Those that qualify represent 6 out of the nation’s 9 provinces, proving that MSSA’s development programmes are bearing fruit. The expense and effort incurred by MSSA in hosting events in areas which others consider to be not worthwhile, is a vital part of creating a greater groundswell upon which eSports in South Africa will be able to build a bigger and better future. National Team Trials details: Hosting Club: TBD • Date: 4 June 2016 • Game Titles: CS:GO, DotA, FIFA, HearthStone, LOL, SC, TTT II • Entry Fees: Nil. Only those who have qualified may participate. • Entries: Clubs must use the entry form on Google Drive to enter their teams/players. • Computers: Will be provided. Please bring your own peripherals.
