TRAILHEAD
GREETINGS FROM TAMARACK
SCOTT TURLINGTON – PRESIDENT TAMARACK RESORT AND DESIGNATED BROKER TAMARACK REALTY
As the snow settles and the mountain comes alive with winter enchantment, I’m thrilled to reflect on the remarkable start to this holiday season. Thanksgiving at Tamarack was nothing short of incredible. Children attended Basecamp’s, our youth activity center, fun-filled Thanksgiving Camp. Families gathered for a delicious dinner at The Reserve. On November 29th, we celebrated a fantastic opening day for the 2024-2025 ski season, setting the stage for an unforgettable winter.
Tamarack’s Enchanted Holidays began with our inaugural Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in The Village—a magical evening that brought families together in the glow of the season. Children penned heartfelt letters to Santa, shared smiles with the man in red, and created cherished memories to last a lifetime.
This season is about more than skiing or snowboarding—it’s a time to connect, celebrate, and create moments that bring us closer. The magic of the holidays has only just begun, and I’m so grateful to share it with all of you.
This winter, Tamarack celebrates its 20th Anniversary season with exciting new milestones. The grand opening of our Mid-Mountain Lodge marks a significant step forward. Perched at the top of the Tamarack Express chairlift, this 12,000-square-foot venue features a panoramic deck, dining options, and a private wing for members of The Club at Tamarack. It’s more than just a building—it’s a gathering place for adventure and relaxation.
On the mountain, we’ve introduced six new ski runs, enhanced terrain for early- and late-season conditions, and—for the first time ever—green runs that stretch from the summit to The Village. These improvements offer even more ways to enjoy the beauty of Tamarack.
On December 15th, 2024, Tamarack will mark 20 years since opening to national acclaim. We’ll celebrate in style with a mid-mountain party and Learn to Ski/Snowboard Day.
In The Village, you’ll notice refreshed menus across our bars and restaurants, thanks to the creativity of our new Executive Chef, Steven Topple. With his expertise and passion, dining at Tamarack has reached new heights. For families, Basecamp, our daycare and activity center, offers a seamless blend of adventure and care for kids. Meanwhile, our Sports School has expanded its offerings, including clinics led by Olympian Erik Fisher, Tamarack’s Sports School Director.
As we celebrate this historic season, I invite you to join us in creating memories that will last a lifetime. The enchantment of Tamarack lies in the experiences we share—on the slopes, in The Village, and beyond.
Here’s to a season of adventure, connection, and celebration.
Scott Turlington

MID-MOUNTAIN LODGE
ELEVATE YOUR EXPERIENCE AT 6,600’
It’s hard to believe the moment has finally arrived. The journey began way back in the early 2000s but was halted by the economic collapse of 2007-2008. Today, those challenges are a thing of the past. The new Mid-Mountain Lodge has transformed from a labor of love into a dynamic, multi-faceted amenity for guests, homeowners, and members. “Tamarack’s Mid-Mountain Lodge is a real game changer,” says Tamarack Resort President Scott Turlington. “The effort, resolve, and commitment from everyone involved have been tremendous. We are thrilled to unveil this incredible new addition to Tamarack—just in time for ski season.”
DOUG HODSON: MAN ON A MISSION
Doug Hodson has been the unsung, man-behind-the-scenes for the Mid Mountain Lodge project. Serving as Tamarack’s Owner Representative, he has overseen the long and arduous road to completion—and he’s still alive to talk about it. We were fortunate to get a few minutes with Doug recently and he gave us a deeper look at the Mid-Mountain Lodge project.
Q:THE MID-MOUNTAIN LODGE SAT DORMANT FOR A LONG TIME. WHAT WERE THE MAIN CHALLENGES YOU FACED TO BRING IT TO WHERE IT IS TODAY?
DOUG: Fortunately, the structure of the Lodge had been weathered in and well protected. The original plans had been fast tracked and based on rustic designs relevant in 2005/2006. We were given an opportunity to reimagine what the Mid-Mountain experience could be for the mountain enthusiast. We reworked the interior floorplan to be more efficient, the finishes to be bright and inviting and the services to provide an unforgettable experience. A few of the main challenges were providing water, sewer, and fire protection two thirds of the way up the mountain.
Q: WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING AT SUCH A STEEP MOUNTAIN ELEVATION? GETTING EQUIPMENT AND TOOLS UP THERE WAS DIFFICULT I IMAGINE?
DOUG: Access to get materials and equipment to the Lodge was up a narrow, steep dirt road with tight switchbacks. The sewer had to tie-in the system at the base of the mountain. The 55,000 gallons of water for the fire sprinkler system come from two tanks buried further up the mountain along with a potable tank to store and supply enough water for both daily use and large events.
Q: GIVE US A QUICK WALK-THROUGH OF THE MID-MOUNTAIN LODGE. IT LOOKS SO IMPRESSIVE—TAKE US THROUGH SOME OF THE FEATURES. WHAT WILL THE BRAND NEW MID-MOUNTAIN LODGE BRING TO THE TAMARACK COMMUNITY?
DOUG: The new Lodge has breathtaking views of the Mountain, Meadows, and Lake from the massive upscale mountain dining/gathering space, the private Member’s Lounge, and the large panoramic deck. There’s a well laid-out scramble/ food service area with a wide variety of choices. There’s a full-service bar with access from both the dining area and exterior deck. The Lodge gives a unique and elevated experience for the skiers, snowboarders, hikers, and bikers on the mountainside. For families it provides a place to hang out while other members are out exploring the mountain. And soon it will house year-round events like Weddings, Club Activities, Family Gatherings, Conferences, and much more.
Q: HAVE YOU GOTTEN POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM OWNERS/MEMBERS AS WE NEAR COMPLETION?
DOUG: The feedback from both owners, club members, and even resort guests has been nothing but incredible. People are excited.
Q: HOW MANY PEOPLE (WORKERS, BUILDERS, ETC) DID IT TAKE TO PULL THIS OFF BY DECEMBER 2024?
DOUG: Between 100 and 150…working long and hard. But it’s all been worth it.
Q: HOW DOES THE NEW MML SEPARATE TAMARACK FROM OTHER MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES?
DOUG: It is a big, open, mountain modern lodge that’s designed to accommodate and delight the families and mountain enthusiasts with the latest modern conveniences and services. For me, I have been blessed with the opportunity to move here as the builder, become part of the community, and finish my career and as the Resort Owner’s Rep. The opening of Mid-Mountain Lodge is a major milestone.
TEAM PROFILE
Q & A WITH DIRECTOR OF MOUNTAIN OPERATIONS:
JC PAUL
Tamarack is celebrated for its renowned skiing and boasts some of the most versatile, scenic terrain in the country. Preparing the slopes and surrounding areas for ski season requires significant effort, especially at an all-season resort. “The transition from summer and fall to ski season is a big undertaking,’ says Tamarack Resort President Scott Turlington. ‘It takes a lot of work, but we’re fortunate to have an incredible team dedicated to maintaining, shaping, grooming, and clearing all 56 named runs at Tamarack.” Leading that team is JC Paul, Tamarack’s Director of Mountain Operations. We had the opportunity to catch up with him just before the start of the ski season.
Q: YOU AND THE TEAM ARE CRAZY BUSY, I APPRECIATE YOU TAKING A FEW MINUTES TO TALK. YOU’RE THE DIRECTOR OF MOUNTAIN OPERATIONS, WHAT ALL DOES THAT ENTAIL?
JC: We stay busy that’s for sure. In a broad sweep, Mountain Operations is responsible for all the mountain terrain and everything that happens on it. My departments include grooming, slope maintenance, lift maintenance, vehicle maintenance, ski/bike patrol, snowmaking, lift operations, terrain/bike parks, and the primary mission is the safety of our guests. Not only do I work with my teams, but also work with our contractors to coordinate construction projects on the mountain.
Q: I KNOW IT’S A BIG TRANSITION FROM SUMMER TO SKI SEASON. WHAT’S THAT LIKE?
JC: It is a big transition and there’s a lot to do to bring the mountain to life for ski season. It’s one of my favorite things, to see the mountain change from summer to winter and vice versa! —It’s a lot of prepping , wrapping up summer projects, set-up and equipment maintenance. We work year-round, for each season, and during the summer we keep all the trails manicured for mountain biking. So, we need to overhaul it for ski season. We perform lift maintenance and inspections, track up vehicles and snow mobiles, get the snowcats ready, pull out all the winter signage, make sure our slopes are dialed in, test snowmaking and begin training our staff for the ski season. This year the shoulder season has been particularly busy because of the Mid-Mountain Lodge construction project, especially for our slope maintenance team.
Q: I KNOW THAT MUST HAVE BEEN INTERESTING.
JC: It’s been a huge undertaking. The construction team used the lift, heavy equipment, trucks and all-terrain vehicles to get materials and staff up the mountain all summer. In additional to the lodge itself, there was a lot of infrastructure constructed all over the entire mountain. And to be honest, this summer season has been busier than ski season, in terms of logistical challenges and managing the mountain. We’ve accomplished a lot, and everyone has been putting in long hours lately to make sure the switch to skiing goes smoothly.
Q: WHAT OTHER TYPES OF PROJECTS DO YOU AND THE TEAM WORK ON?
JC: There’s always something! The mountain requires constant attention so in addition to our normal maintenance schedules we’ve completed lots of mastication, tree felling, brush clearing, erosion control and re-grading on our slopes. Our bike park team added nearly 3 miles of new trails this summer and we finished extensive maintenance on our snowmaking system. We also built 6 news named ski runs for this season.
Q: MASTICATION?
JC: Yep, Mastication is a method of forestry management which uses a large piece of equipment like a skid-steer or excavator which basically mulches down smaller trees and brush. It allows us to open ski runs with about 30% less natural snow, we were able to widen some runs as well as clean up a lot of our tree skiing and entrances/egresses. We’re looking forward to mastication more terrain every summer. I love that machine!
Q: OK LAST QUESTION, CAN YOU RATTLE OFF SOME TAMARACK SKI STATS AND FACTS FOR US?
JC: Oh yeah, we have added 6 new runs this year (five green, one blue), so we have a total of 56 named runs, plus glades and backcountry. We have a 2,800 vertical drop from the summit at 7,700 feet. We have 1,530 acres of lift-served terrain for skiers. We have 25 miles of Nordic trails for cross-country skiing. We average 300 inches of snow a year. We have snow-making capabilities for 150 acres.
PONDEROSA RIDGE
Q & A WITH ALTURAS HOMES:
SCOTT GIVENS
Scott and Rod Givens bring a refreshing and impressive approach to mountain home building. With a focus on blending seamlessly with the natural world, their designs prioritize stunning sightlines and a sense of privacy, all while celebrating the great outdoors. The Ponderosa Ridge Villas stand as a testament to their dedication and passion.
Above all, Alturas Builders embodies quality and integrity. As Scott Givens explains, “Rod and I learned from our dad, just as he learned from his. Our goal is simple: to deliver custom-quality homes without the headaches, delays, or challenges that often come with the process. We take great pride in our work and the relationships we build—with Tamarack, the homeowners, staff, and contractors.
Q: WHAT MAKES PONDEROSA RIDGE SO SPECIAL IN YOUR VIEW?
SCOTT: Well, location first of all. These Villas are in a premier setting at America’s only ski, golf, and lake resort. Tamarack is a true all-season resort community and the location for Ponderosa Ridge is ideal, being adjacent to the newly completed Osprey Meadows Golf Course. All of the Villas are close enough to the bustling Village at Tamarack for easy access to dinging and amenities, yet they are set far enough apart so you feel like you have your own private mountain retreat.
Q: TELL ME ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN OF THE HOMES THEMSELVES, WHAT MAKES THEM SPECIAL IN YOUR MIND?
SCOTT: We designed these as if we were going to be living in them with our families. You know, what would we want? What would our kids like? How can we make certain areas flexible and adaptable to a given family’s needs. We ensured great sightlines, with long views of the mountains, forest, or driving range. We paid particular attention to small details and touches and finishes that make these homes feel custom. Yet the turn-around time is quick—about eight months— so new buyers aren’t strung along for months, even years, waiting on their new home. And four of the Villas are available and move-in ready right now.
Q:WHAT ELSE IS UNIQUE ABOUT THESE PONDEROSA RIDGE VILLAS?
SCOTT: Flexibility and functionality in a free-flowing, ‘live-able’ design that conforms to each family’s specific needs and lifestyle. We have designed plans and options for homeowners to select from, so they have choices. From there we expedite the process—we sweat the details and manage the production so that we stay on time and on budget. Plus, these Villas are designated a Signature Tamarack Neighborhood, which means owners receive maintenance-free living and upkeep. Above all, these Villas serve as a comfortable, rustically elegant home base for all the year-round mountain fun Tamarack offers.

SALES ASSOCIATE, TAMARACK REALTY STEPHANIE MCMAHON
It’s thrilling returning to Tamarack full-time to join the real estate sales team, as the resort is a place I still consider “home” (having been on the original launch team, as well as a longtime owner and club member). I have a deep passion for this project, and its ever-growing community of homeowners, guests, and employees, and consider it an immense privilege to help bring the refreshed vision for Tamarack to fruition.
This go ‘round, I come with an additional 20 years of luxury real estate development sales and marketing experience. My portfolio of projects includes renowned lifestyle brands—Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts—as well as many other unique resort and residential offerings, notably the renovation and launch of the historically significant The Homes at Fort Lawton, Seattle’s “Presidio” community; Danzante Bay Golf Club on the Sea of Cortez in Baja Calif., Mexico; MacDonald Highlands’ 1,300 acre master-planned golf community overlooking Henderson, Nevada; and many others.

1. DONNELLY IS KNOWN AS THE CROSSROADS TO RECREATION, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO RECREATE?
I still love skiing ... because I love the chairlift! Grateful for the many meaningful talks with my kids, friends, and even strangers. The downhill payoff is ‘icing’ on the cake.
2. WINTER IS HERE, SO WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE (AND LEAST FAVORITE) WINTER TRADITIONS?
• Making ‘global holiday playlists’ - the more eclectic the better.
• My grandmother’s enchiladas every Christmas Eve.
• Snowshoeing under the light of a full moon - bliss!
• My least favorite: ordering any present online.
3. IN THREE SENTENCES OR LESS TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
Lesser-known facts: I taught aerobics in Argentina, I wish I went to art school instead of business school, I love flamenco guitar, I’m captivated by people and their stories.
4. IF YOU COULD LEARN TO DO ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I’d study languages. Spanish is an endlessly romantic language, next would be Mandarin and Arabic.
5. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO SELL OR BUY RIGHT NOW?
The same advice I always give - Get very clear on what is best for you and your family, then take decisive action.
6. WHAT WOULD YOU NAME THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF YOUR LIFE? Curious Georg(ette).
7. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT’S THE COOLEST DESIGN TREND YOU ARE SEEING IN HOMES TODAY?
Clean mountain-modern design (goodbye kitschy themes), which provides a perfect canvas for the new owners’ personalities, passions, and artwork - don’t be afraid to make it your own.
8. WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WERE NOT HELPING PEOPLE BUY OR SELL HOMES?
Every outdoor activity imaginable (except sky diving, of course).
9. WHAT BOOK ARE YOU CURRENTLY ENJOYING AND WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT?
The Overstory, an exquisite tale about our human connection (and disconnection) with trees.
10. LASTLY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING IN REAL ESTATE?
Relationships, without question.
