School is back in session, and summer is winding down, but the camaraderie and memories from the grand re-opening of Osprey Meadows a few short weeks ago will linger in the hearts and minds of everyone who was in attendance. It was great to have the Osprey Meadows architects—Robert Trent Jones II, Robert Trent Jones III, and Bruce Charlton—on hand to inaugurate the new course that they so masterfully sculpted into one of the finest mountain designs in the country.

We are delighted to welcome celebrated Executive Chef Steven Topple to Tamarack Resort. With more than three decades in the food and beverage industry, Chef Topple brings a wealth of culinary knowledge, creativity, and expertise to our community. Many of you may already be familiar with him through his creative Italian restaurant, Ragazza Di Bufalo in Donnelly, as well as his newest project, Casa Rossa Wine Bar & Tapas, also in Donnelly. Chef Topple brings a truly innovative and savory approach to cuisine. You can find more about Executive Chef Topple on page 26.

PROGRESS ON THE MOUNTAIN: The passion and hard work of these past few months are definitely paying off. We continue to make great progress as we push toward completion of several significant projects:

• Our mountain-wide electrical upgrade with Idaho Power

• Mid Mountain Lodge construction (opening late December)

• Mechanical clearing of heavy brush throughout the mountain

• Completion of snowmaking enhancements that will provide full coverage on both Lower Serenity and Lower Showtime

TAMARACK COMINGS & GOINGS: As we near the end of our Tamarack Summer Concert Series, we have some wonderful bands in the lineup. A schedule of the remaining summer events can be found on page 24. Every week Tamarack also has recurring events that you don’t want to miss. These events include Trivia Tuesdays (5:30pm at 7 Devils), Karaoke Fridays (8:00pm at 7 Devils), Yoga Saturdays (8:30am and 2:00pm), and Nine and Dine on Thursday with tee times starting at 3:00pm.

The Club and its members are eagerly anticipating the return of The Club Golf Championship and its Member Guest Invitational this month. In addition to golf, The Club is also preparing for its first Pickleball Tournament. Other member events include a Payette Lake Cruise, fitness classes and outdoor excursions, wine tastings, concerts, and lots of fellowship. Don’t miss out on these memory-making experiences.

Tamarack is pleased to welcome Steven Topple as our new Executive Chef. He has a great pedigree in culinary circles, having been in the food and beverage industry for 30+ years. Among his many responsibilities, he will be dedicated to elevating your dining experience with his innovative and flavorful creations.

Hailing from Portsmouth, United Kingdom, Chef Topple has honed his skills in the mountain ski resorts of Vail and Beaver Creek in Colorado, and he had the privilege of working alongside two renowned celebrity chefs, Brian Turner in London, and Wolfgang Puck in San Francisco. He has been a featured chef at the James Beard House in New York City, and Chef Topple has traveled extensively across the United States gaining invaluable experience while earning a reputation as both a talented chef and a successful restaurateur.

More recently, of course, he has resided nearby in Donnelly, where some of you have no doubt enjoyed his culinary creations at Ragazza Di Bufalo and Casa Rossa. We are excited for Chef Topple to lead our food and beverage team and elevate the overall dining experience for owners, members, and guests. Chef Topple will oversee the menus for all of our dining venues, including The Club, so guests can look forward to creative and exceptional dishes that reflect his unique style and passion. Q & A WITH AWARD WINNING GOLF COURSE ARCHITECT, ROBERT TRENT JONES II

Few names are as instantly recognized in golf circles as Robert Trent Jones II. After all, his father, Robert Trent Jones was a legendary golf architect who designed (or re-designed) 500+ golf courses throughout the world—35 countries in all. Today, Robert Trent Jones II has carried the mantle for several decades now, creating some of the most renowned golf courses on the planet.

At Tamarack, we share a special bond with Robert Trent Jones II (RTJ2). He created the original course here some twenty years ago and just recently completed the stunning new 19-hole Osprey Meadows Golf Course, which officially opened for play on July 5, 2024. On Saturday, July 27, Tamarack held a special golf tournament to celebrate the grand re-opening of the new course. Luckily, Robert Trent Jones II was in attendance, and we had a chance to sit down and talk with him.

Q: FIRST OF ALL, CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING HONORED THE 2024 ASGCA DONALD ROSS AWARD.

RTJ2: Thank you, I’m a bit emotional about it because we just found out. But this is a tremendous honor to me because it comes from my peers and others in the golf industry who deemed me worthy of this award. It’s very special.

Q: CERTAINLY WELL-DESERVED. AND IT’S IRONIC THAT YOU RECEIVE THIS HONOR JUST AS WE ARE HERE TO CELEBRATE ANOTHER OF YOUR CLASSIC CREATIONS: TAMARACK’S NEWLY RE-DESIGNED OSPREY MEADOWS CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF COURSE. TELL US ROBERT, WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO TAMARACK TO DO THIS COURSE.

RTJ2: What attracted me is the natural wonders and beauty of the place. And the outdoor recreation that would attract families.

Q: WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES OF DESIGNING A GOLF COURSE ON MOUNTAIN TERRAIN?

RTJ2: The mountains present a different challenge than flat courses in say, Florida. The mountains give you an extra dimension, three-dimensional golf, that flat courses don’t. The mountainscreate a third dimension, so the course has a more complex design, more dramatic, more opportunity for great vistas, and, and of hitting balls forever in the higher, thinner air. It’s that extra dimension here that made my heart beat a little quicker.

Q: WHAT WAS YOUR FOCUS ON THE RE-DESIGN AT OSPREY MEADOWS?

RTJ2: We wanted to rethink the routing and widen the fairways and make the course more playable, as they say, meaning more fun for the average player so they don’t lose as many golf balls and they can keep on playing.

During our interview with Robert Trent Jones II, he got a very special phone call informing him that he had just received the prestigious 2024 ASGCA Donald Ross Award. The award recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the game of golf and the profession of golf course architecture.

Q: EVERYONE SEEMS TO LOVE THE NEW OUT-AND-BACK LAYOUT.

RTJ2: Well, thank you, we rerouted it so that holes then number 1 and 2, which are very dramatic and pretty holes, are now 17 and 18. And the [old] 18th hole, which didn’t work, is now the 16th hole. So we changed the routing and added width. Cleaned up a lot of the brush and just made it more accessible and fun.

Q: I READ ON YOUR WEBSITE THAT ONE OF YOUR MAIN PRINCIPLES IS THAT YOU WANT YOUR DESIGNS “TO FOLLOW THE LAND”.

RTJ2: Yes, that’s true. I’m a person that follows the land. I listen to the land, listen to the buffalo coming my way. If I can hear it, I know what’s gonna happen. I can listen to the winds, I can feel the winds. I embrace all that. But most of all, the land is a gift. So if you’re a sculptor and have a beautiful piece of stone or marble, you want to leave it alone.

Q: ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS ABOUT THIS NEW COURSE IS THAT WITH THE VARYING TEES AND LENGTHS, YOU CAN MAKE IT CHALLENGING FOR THE SCRATCH GOLFER OR PLAYABLE FOR THE WEEKEND GOLFER. EVERYONE HAS BEEN SAYING IT’S A GREAT EVERYDAY COURSE TOO— YOU’LL DISCOVER SOMETHING NEW EACH TIME YOU PLAY.

RTJ2: This course is very flexible in terms of length. In terms of variety, we pride ourselves on making each shot interesting. The approach shots have to come in from different angles. We’re assuming the players can play reasonably well, but we also want to take care of the beginners, so they can come out with their family and get hooked on golf. And so, width is important. And then finally, variety in the short game, where a six-foot putt is equal to a 300-yard drive. So that’s where the older folks can make it up on the young ‘limber backs.’ So all of that’s in this course, and it’s a golf course you should play many times. That’s right. You won’t learn it the first time. You got to dance with that lady to learn her character.

HOMEOWNER PROFILE: BOB & CHRIS HARRY

Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, Bob and Chris Harry were so taken with Tamarack that they bought two residences in The Village—one for them to use and one to put in the Tamarack Rental Program. They saw real value in the all-season living experience, as well as in the long-term investment prospects. “Tamarack is really hitting its stride,” says Bob Harry, “with all the great skiing, the Tamarack lakefront with the marina coming soon, and the new Osprey Meadows course which opened this summer.”

Bob, Chris and their three grown children (Owen, Wallis, and Duncan) embody the TamFam lifestyle: the natural beauty, the friendly hospitality, and, of course, the fourseason activities that abound,indoors and out.

Q: BOB TELL US HOW YOU HEARD ABOUT TAMARACK?

BOB: We visited McCall about 10 years ago. Our oldest son went to University of Idaho, and one of his friends’ mom was a realtor and told them about this resurgent community called Tamarack. So, we checked it out, liked what we saw, and bought our condominium in the Village right over the phone, sight unseen.

Q: OH REALLY, THAT’S INTERESTING

BOB: We just knew this was the place for us. It clicked with both of us. So, we closed on our two-bedroom Roseberry residence in 2022 and then decided to buy a studio condo in Roseberry as a rental investment.

Q: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE OSPREY MEADOWS GOLF COURSE?

BOB: I really like it can play as long and challenging as you want, or you can take advantage of the shorter tee options and wide fairways to keep it fun for the weekend golfer. As for the course, it’s such a beautiful out-and-back design and the views are incredible—you have the ridgelines, the lake in the distance, the pine forest all around, the mountain meadows, it’s stunning—and a great everyday resort course.

Q: SO, TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND THE ACTIVITIES EVERYONE ENJOYS.

BOB: We do a little bit of everything. The skiing is a huge part of our life, so we are up here 4 or 5 times during the winter. We also like the warmer months for the golf, the boating and fishing, the hiking, the pool. We love the variety of each season’s activities, there’s always something fun to do up here.

Q: I UNDERSTAND YOUR DAUGHTER WAS MARRIED AT TAMARACK

BOB: That’s true. It was a great day. Wallis and Sam got married on New Year’s Eve at the Arling Center Chapel. It was very special and the fact that she wanted to get married here shows you what a big part of our life Tamarack has become.

YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT TAMARACK

BOB: There are so many, that’s tough. I think first and foremost, the location is ideal, all the natural beauty and the stunning backdrop of the mountains and forest. Secondly, we love the community and the people up here, both the staff and the fellow owners and members. Everyone is so friendly and it’s such a positive vibe every time we’re here. Finally, we love the variety and flexibility of the amenities and activities that we get to enjoy with each new season. We never run out of stuff to do at Tamarack.

In the summer- hiking to one of the many high mountain lakes with my grandsons. In the winter, making turns with my family at Tamarack.

3. FALL IS HERE, SO WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE FALL TRADITIONS?

My favorite fall tradition is driving down West Mountain Road when it is covered with Tamarack needles. I love a good walk enjoying the fall colors and the crisp air.

4. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO SELL OR BUY RIGHT NOW? Make sure you have an agent you trust to help you understand the pros and cons of your specific situation but also make sure you feel confident about your decisions. After all, all decisions are yours to make.

5. IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY, WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU WOULD DO? I would buy land near Tamarack and build homes for all of my children and their families.

I would be counseling troubled youth.
