TOURISM IN TALLINN June 2009 In June 2009, 221,000 tourists stayed in Estonian accommodation establishments, 48% of whom stayed in Tallinn. Arrivals in Tallinn: 106,400 (-12%) * Bednights in Tallinn: 182,200 (-14%) •

Shorter length of stay among tourists in Tallinn

Stays by foreign tourists remain almost unchanged, but the length of stay of domestic tourists showed a notable decline from 1.91 to 1.71 nights. Among primary markets, Norwegian tourists stay the longest (2.38 nights), and Finns spent the shortest time (1.42 nights).

74% of accommodated tourists arrived for holidays 76% of foreign tourists stay in Tallinn for leisure purposes, 18% for business, 5% for attending a conference and 1% for other purposes. 60% of domestic tourists visit for leisure purposes, 22% for business, 13% for attending conferences and 5% for other purposes.

Room occupancy rates and price of bednights ** decreased In June 416 accommodation establishments offered accommodation services for tourists. The room occupancy rate was 50%, 10% lower than in June of the previous year. The average cost of a bednight in an accommodation establishment was 542 kroons, which is 112 kroons less expensive compared to June 2008.

Travellers by air and by sea decreased The number of passengers at Tallinn Airport was 127 000, down 28% compared with June the year before. The number of passengers passing through the Tallinn Old Harbour totaled 764 900, down by 1% compared with June last year.

The average length of stay for both domestic and foreign tourists in June was 1.71 nights.

Tourists staying in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments During the period from January to June 2009, a total of 477,000 tourists stayed in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments (12% less tourists compared with same period in 2008). Altogether a total of 414,500 foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments (-9% or 43,100 tourists). The number of domestic tourists decreased somewhat, numbers accommodated fell 25%, by 21,000 tourists, for a total of 62,500. Bednights spent by tourists also shrank during the first six months, with a total of 818,800 bednights (-15%) spent in Tallinn’s accommodation establishments. While bednights by foreign tourists shrank by 12% (totalling 721,100 bednights), bednights by Estonian residents were down by 33% (total 97,700 bednights).

In the in the first half year of 2009 the average length of stay continued to decline and it was 1.72 nights (-3%). The average trip length among foreign tourists shortened by 3%, from 1.79 to 1.74 nights. The longest stays in Tallinn were in January, and the shortest were in February and March. Foreign visitors’ trips are longer in January primarily because of the long winter holiday enjoyed by Russian tourists. Compared to the previous year, the average length of stay decreased the most in February. The length of stay for domestic tourists decreased even more, from 1.74 to 1.56 nights, or 10%. The length of stay of domestic tourists showed a notable decline in the first quarter (January-March) compared with 2008. During the second quarter, the decline Estonians’ trips to Tallinn were similar to the previous year in June. The longest trips were in January (1.72 nights) and the shortest in February (1.44 nights).
