FROM THE EDITOR

Time to Hit Refresh! WELCOME THE NEW YEAR WITH COSMOPOLITAN’S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, MICHELE PROMAULAYKO. FOR MORE, FOLLOW @MICHPROM.

we ’ ve all heard the saying “look the part.” Usually, it refers to dressing in a way that’s in keeping with a role, most often a job. But as I dove into my second month as editor-inchief of Cosmo, I started to think my office needed to look the part too! After all, this space is where I hold fun staff meetings, chat with celebs who happen to drop by, and host business mavens. It needs to be comfy and operative but also look damn goood. So I enlisted the help of Laurel & Wolf, a supercool online interiordesign service, to dream up a look for my new work digs. When I told them the vibe I was going for—sophisticated glam with an edge—they

suggested turning to Z Gallerie for furnishings. Good call! I couldn’t be more excited about how it came out. Speaking of fresh starts, with the new year fast approaching and a new president about to be sworn in, change is definitely in the air. We’re all deciding what we want to do differently in the coming months and who we want to be when 2017 draws to a close. January is the kickoff to all those optimistic plans—and for the vast majority of resolution makers, it’s also the finish line. But you’re not about to let your goals end in a #Fail, right? So whether you’re looking to take your style, career, or lust life to the next level, we have crucial advice

in this issue. Even if you’re just looking to make a few fitness upgrades, such as sculpting an epic booty, we’ve got your ass covered there as well. We teamed up with Cosmopolitan.com to launch the Butt Challenge, a 28-day regimen that will score you the rearview results you desire. Not quite sure where to aim your energy? You could always flip to our much-anticipated annual Bedside Astrologer for inspo. At the very least, it will hint at what the stars have in store in key areas of your life. And IMO, when you feel a little stuck, sometimes it’s best to take a deep breath and let the universe lead the way. Have a happy, healthy New Year! P.S. I’d love to hear from you. Hit me up at Michele@Cosmopolitan.com.

“There’s a song called ‘Mississippi’ about a back-andforth relationship. It’s like you’re counting: One Mississippi, things are good, then two Mississippi, things are bad. It was actually written a couple of years ago, so the song had

a big chance of being left off the album, but it just stayed with me.” NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION:

“To always be on time. It never works out. Every January 1, I’m like, ‘Sorry I’m late!’” ON USING HER VOICE:

“My parents taught me that it’s okay to

question everything. Sometimes, it came back to bite them— if they said I couldn’t do something, I’d say, ‘Why not?’ We can talk for hours about things that are happening in society. It’s absolutely thanks to them that I’m confident in saying what I want.”

THINK KINK “DNCE fans are going to have fun with our song ‘Be Mean.’ It’s about vibing with somebody— whether you want to be tied up, use some handcuffs, dress up. It’s like our nod to Fifty Shades of Grey, which I actually haven’t seen, but I probably should... for research purposes.”

SEX BUCKET LIST “I’ve fooled around in an elevator, but I’ve yet to cross sex in an elevator off the list. There have been bathrooms before. But sex in an airplane bathroom is a hundred percent on my bucket list. Apparently, you can go to jail for it. Maybe slip a hundred to the flight attendant and they’ll be like, ‘I got you, bro.’”

RELATIONSHIP RESOLUTIONS “I’ll try to take ladies on dates before introducing them to my whole group. They’re tough about bringing people around. And I can get more creative. It’s easy to go to dinner, but I could try to whip up something in the kitchen.”

FAMILY MATTERS “Nick and I have been into the same girl. We’re best friends with similar tastes, so it’s inevitable. In those situations, we have a bro code: Whoever spent more time with her gets to give it a shot. And ultimately, she decides.”

CONFESSIONS

Cosmo readers reveal their most embarrassing, ridiculous, what-was-Ithinking moments.

“I still live at home, and my boyfriend and I were hooking up in the living room. I was pretty sure we cleaned up afterward. But three days later, my mom texted me a pic of the condom wrapper and wrote in all capital letters: No sex on the family couch. I was with my boyfriend when she sent it, and we were both totally embarrassed. He vowed never to come to the house again.” 1

“I met this hot football player on campus, and after a few weeks of heavy flirtation, we hooked up one night on the 50-yard line of our school’s field. Midway through, campus security guards showed up and shined their flashlights all over us. We bolted before they could get too close, climbing over the fence and making a fast getaway. Talk about a running back.”

“I was at the mall with my sister when I spotted my grandma sitting in the atrium. I ran over to perch on her lap—something we still do even though I’m not a kid anymore— and give her a big hug. It was actually just a woman who looked like her, and she had weak bones. I hurt her hip by sitting on her lap. My parents had to pay the doctor bill.” —ELLA C., 19

5 “I was staying at Michael’s family’s house—and meeting his parents—for the first time. One day when Michael and I had gotten back from being out, his mom met us at the door and said in a very serious voice that she had to tell me something. Apparently, his parents’ goldendoodle, Tiger, had gotten into my room, found a pair of my underwear, and eaten it. If that wasn’t bad enough, the dog proceeded to throw up the underwear in Michael’s mom’s bedroom! When I found out his mom had seen my panties…I wanted to die!” —ELIZABETH C., 23, STUDENT, DALLAS, TX, WITH MICHAEL S., 25, TALENT AGENT, LOS ANGELES, CA

CONFESSIONS

6 “I’d been dating this Brazilian guy, and I really wanted to impress him and his family. He put me on FaceTime with his mom, and I’d practiced saying, ‘Thank you for raising an amazing man— I’m the happiest woman in the world.’ I royally screwed it up and wound up saying, ‘I’m a happy yellow planet’ in Portuguese. She must have thought I was a total nut.”

“There was this beautiful guy in one of my classes—I had a crush from the moment I saw him at Welcome Week. I’d sit across from him and stare, and I even told my mom about him. Finally, I saw him outside our classroom building and decided to take the opportunity to talk to him and ask about our professor’s assignment. I was wearing ripped jeans, and the rip was up high, near my crotch. He was way ahead of me, so I had to run after him, and as I was calling his name, the rip in my jeans got caught on a piece of scaffolding. It ripped up sideways, completely exposing my underwear—and it cut up my skin so I was bleeding. He glanced back, said ‘Oof,’ and kept walking. I was mortified.”

20

“I slept with a guy who ghosted me afterward. I put his picture on my Snapchat Story and added the caption, ‘Sleeps with people and then won’t respond to texts,’ to call him out.”

—KARLA L., 30

—JESSICA H., 25

9 “During my senior year of high school, I begged this girl I was crushing on to come watch my basketball practice. Afterward, we were talking, and one of my teammates ran over and pulled my pants down. I was butt naked. He definitely knew that it would be easy to pants me and expose everything, since I had just showered and put on shorts without boxers, while next to him in the locker room. So, there I was, in the middle of the parking lot, with everything hanging out, swinging in the wind. She yelled, ‘Oh my god!’ I couldn’t even look at her after that.”

—LEAH S., 19, STUDENT, JACKSONVILLE, FL

—HALEY S., 20

“My husband’s BFF stayed over at our place one night. In the morning, we heard the front door slam, so we assumed his best friend had left. Since he was gone, we proceeded to have super-loud sex—with lots of dirty talk. When I went downstairs after, he was standing there, looking very awkward. Turned out, he’d only stepped outside to check the weather, and the door blew shut when he came back in. Apparently, he’d heard everything!”

JUST CLUELESS UM, NO CHECK, PLEASE SO OFFENSIVE EPIC FAIL LITERALLY DERANGED

“On our first date, he texted and told me to meet him at Chili’s at 7:30. I showed up and saw him sitting at a table with two other people. When I got to the table, he promptly introduced me...to his parents.” —SARAH E., 22

“While we were out on our very first date, he took my phone, made a video of himself saying, ‘I’m her boyfriend, so all you boys out there watching this better back off,’ and posted it to my Story on Snapchat. He wasn’t— and still isn’t—my boyfriend.” —ROSE S., 21

“I planned this really romantic winter date complete with dinner, ice-skating, and hot cocoa. On our way to the coffee shop after dinner, he told me that I really should avoid getting the hot chocolate because I’d already had wine with dinner and all that sugar would definitely make me fat. That was our last date.” —RAE G., 25

“He’d booked us a fancy dinner date and a room at a five-star hotel for after. As we were driving to the hotel, I was using his tablet to check my coursework site for school, when messages started popping up. They were naked videos from some chick I’d never heard of. I looked, and they’d been messaging all day. He’d called her babe. That killed the mood.”

—MALERIE E., 24

“He took me to a fancy restaurant and told me not to order too much since we were going to a party at his parents’ after. By the time we got there, the food was gone and everyone had left. And when I said I needed to leave too, he refused to drive me home because he wanted to ‘save on fuel emissions.’” —HANNAH S., 19

“On our first date, this guy took me to Buffalo Wild Wings— despite knowing I’m a vegetarian. When I reminded him, he told me, ‘Oh, you’ll drink a few beers and snap out of it.’ That’s...not how that works.” —SAVANNAH S., 21

“Help! My Mom Is on Twitter!” “One day, I signed on to my Facebook and saw pictures of my ex and his new girlfriend at a Greek event on my timeline. I was confused because I had blocked them both. Then, I saw that it was my mother who had shared the photo. I called her immediately, freaking out, and asked why she posted that. She didn’t even know what photo I was talking about and didn’t know she had shared it. I was mortified.” —LILY P., 21

“My mother was obsessed with Facebook zoo and spent real money buying crops and more animals for her zoo. She would post ‘Can you please feed my crops by clicking on my goat?’ on my friends’ walls.” —STACI F., 29

“My mom follows all my old friends from college, who I’m not even friends with anymore, on every social-media platform and Likes all their stuff. She also posts the worst pictures of me without my permission and then refuses to delete them.” —JENNA R., 23

“I met a guy at a bar, and he asked me out. We had a great first date, so I told my mom about it. On our second date, the guy told me that my mom had sent him a friend request on Facebook.” —COURTNEY D., 27

“My mom always comments on my friends’ and my pictures on Insta like she’s part of the squad. She’ll say things like ‘yaaas, baby girl,’ ‘slay,’ and ‘my girls turnin’ up!’ Nope.” —MAYA A., 24

24

“One day, I was on Facebook and I saw my mom commented, using the laughing emoji on a post about a friend’s dog who died, and I thought, Surely that was a typo. A week or so later, I saw another post, also about a dead dog, and my mom commented again with the laughing emoji. So that’s when I texted her and had to explain that it’s a laughing emoji, not a sad, crying emoji.” —BROOKE C., 19

“My mom doesn’t get how Snapchat works—and she is definitely desperately lost when it comes to Face Swap. She did one with her Starbucks cup and posted it to Instagram. My friends laughed for weeks.” —SYDNEY S., 21

“My mother thought Twitter was just direct messages, so her timeline is full of messages she meant to be private between her and her friends. She’ll tweet about her candid feelings about people she knows or her job—all the things you’d usually DM. And yet she gets retweets!” —ELISA W., 21

“My mom is a social-media butterfly, and lately, she’s taken to posting hideously embarrassing nude baby pics of me on Twitter, Snapchat, and Insta. She also insists that I do a full-blown photo shoot with her to get her a new profile pic every time she joins a new platform. She’s an early adopter!” —STEPHANIE M., 25

“Right after a family member passed away, my mom was writing a really sentimental post on Facebook. She thought that LOL stood for ‘lots of love,’ so she ended the post with LOL. I had to explain to her that LOL means ‘laugh out loud.’” —COURTNEY W., 22

“My mom posted this status to Facebook: ‘I just spent the last 15 minutes trying to attach my fake eyelash with vaginal antifungal cream…same size white tube in my makeup drawer as my eyelash adhesive. Oops, I guess I really need glasses.’” —MADDY L., 23

“I’m friends online with my boss and a lot of my colleagues, so I prefer to steer clear of putting any inappropriate pictures on social media. I just recently logged on and saw that my mom posted a video of me doing shots. Thanks, Mom.” —HOLLY H., 21

“When I went back to my college for alumni weekend, someone put a dildo in the hand of the campus statue of Chester Arthur. I posted a pic on FB, and my mom, not realizing there was a dildo in the photo, shared it and wrote, ‘These are the precious memories you’ll always have!’” —KATIE B., 24

ON MY MIND

Each month, Cosmo lets one passionate voice sound off

The Feminine Divide

JILL FILIPOVIC IS THE AUTHOR OF THE FORTHCOMING BOOK THE H-SPOT: THE FEMINIST PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.

In the wake of a shocking election upset, one of the most troubling revelations is that women are not as united as we might have hoped.

if on november 7 you had asked me “What will happen tomorrow?” I would have said that the first female president of the United States would be voted into office by a landslide. And nearly every pollster in the country would have backed up that statement. The data-defying—and to some, devastating—outcome that business tycoon turned reality star turned rogue politician Donald Trump will, in fact, be the next leader of the free world has been dissected to death. The summary conclusion: Trump won his bid largely because of white male enthusiasm (63 percent of white men, and a majority of men overall, voted for him). But what stuns me is that, while most women voted for Hillary Clinton, we were not unified: Women of color decisively supported her (94 percent of black women and 68 percent of Latinas), but a whopping 53 percent of white women cast their ballots for a man who ran a campaign steeped in sexism. That so many women rejected Clinton—who, despite her muchdiscussed flaws, was an overqualified candidate and lifelong advocate of women’s rights—is hard for me to

26

stomach, let alone understand. An inescapable truth: There are still a lot of women who are not down for a paradigm power shift. For millennial females—the majority of whom voted for Clinton—this feels like a betrayal. It’s us, not the Trumpvoting women over 45, who will suffer the consequences of the country the president-elect has promised to build: encroachments on our access to contraception, the dashed dream of paid parental leave, the potential end of abortion rights. The wrenching questions that float through my mind (and plague me in the middle of the night): How could so many of our mothers, aunts, and grandmothers risk our rights like this? How could even more of our fathers, husbands, brothers, and boyfriends do the same? How, too, could so many of our ovary-owning peers? Women in Clinton’s generation, including the Democratic nominee herself, worked tirelessly to open doors to the many privileges we now enjoy: higher education, reproductive choice, better pay. For feminists like me, cavalierly putting those hard-earned freedoms in jeopardy is enraging…and heartbreaking. Trump

has been accused of sexual assault and made a series of misogynistic comments publicly. The realization that so many women were willing to accept Trump’s own characterization of his remarks as normal “lockerroom talk” suggests to me that many of us simply don’t expect decent treatment from men…in our own homes or even in the White House. But all hope is not lost. Socialjustice advocates are already preparing to fight any erosions to our rights. Grassroots organizers are staging a national women’s march on Washington on January 21 in what will surely be an impressive show of solidarity. Closer to home, we have to get over the notion that it’s impolite to talk about politics and challenge beliefs that marginalize and discriminate against women, people of color, and the LGBTQ community. With the inauguration looming, I keep thinking of Trump’s response when he was asked during a debate to say something nice about Clinton: “She never gives up.” Maybe the best way to honor Hillary’s legacy— and to ensure the continued advancement of women—is to heed those very words. ■

BEAUTY

6 Secrets to Longer, Stronger Hair Intrepid beauty writer Amber Katz went to great lengths to uncover the intel. Lucky for us, she’s sharing all of it here.

W #HairGoals, and mine is simple: Possess a mane as long and lustrous as Blake Lively’s. So last year, when I finally reached my dream décolletagegrazing length, I was horrified when a new stylist I went to erroneously hacked off five inches. (I’d reluctantly agreed to a “microtrim” and ended up with a lob.) Like a security blanket, wearing long hair balances out the bits of myself I don’t love—my bulbous nose and broad swimmer’s shoulders. So after the shearing, I compensated with dramatic makeup, black clothing…anything to feel prettier and slimmer. The effect verged on accidental Goth. When my longtime hairstylist (I should never have cheated on him), Matt Fugate, suggested tape-in we all have

42 _ COSMOPOLITAN _ JANUARY 2017

extensions—a technique that bonds sections of your own hair to natural-looking bundles (aka wefts)—I cleared my schedule. Soon after, a college student asked for my number, as did two hot guys I met on (makeup-free) errand runs. No wingwoman could compare to my elongated locks. That is, until they became a headache. It wasn’t just the extra weight, which caused scalp tension and pain. I started noticing how my own fine hair air-dried 30 minutes more quickly than the thicker pieces—and when it rained, my natural texture spiraled, while the rest went flat. I couldn’t even fix it in a topknot… you could see the tape! Plus, maintaining them meant having them reinstalled every eight weeks. Six months later, I was over them—but not before uncovering these proven secrets for growing hair longer and stronger in as little as 90 days.

1. Eat This

Mane Menu

Foods rich in biotin, a B-complex vitamin, are essential for promoting hair growth, says derm Mona Gohara, MD. Incorporate a palm-size serving (it’s in almonds, eggs, and avocado) thrice daily. Also important: iron, which oxygenates follicles (eat it at each meal; oatmeal, spinach, and hummus are chock-full), and daily servings of protein (chicken, fish, beans), hair’s main building block.

2. Do a Deep

Cleaning

Buildup of excess oil, dead skin cells, and product can create inflammation, causing follicles to weaken, says

STRANGE BUT TRUE! You’ve probably heard of the Vampire Facelift, where docs take your blood and spin it down to isolate your platelets (which contain growth factors) and then reinject them to produce collagen. But “PRP [plateletrich plasma] procedures are a new way to stimulate hair growth too,” says Dr. Gohara. Results can be impressive, says derm Whitney Bowe, MD. The downside: Each treatment is about $1,200 (you’ll likely need three, plus touch-ups). Dr. Gohara. Loosen it once or twice a week with a scalp-specific exfoliant (check out our picks here), focusing on the hairline as well as the back of the scalp, where buildup tends to be heaviest, says Joshua Zeichner, MD, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at the Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC. If dandruff is contributing to the inflammation, wash hair daily with a zinc pyrithione shampoo and conditioner (try Dove’s twoin-one, at right).

VIVISCAL Extra Strength, $50 for 1-month supply, viviscal.com

3. Give Your

Scalp Love

A five-minute head massage, which promotes circulation, can deliver oxygen and nutrients that stimulate hairs’ stem cells for more rapid hair growth, says Neil Sadick, MD, a clinical professor of dermatology at Weill Cornell Medical College. (Incorporate the Über-relaxing BaBylissPRO Scalp Massage Brush, $2.50, Sally Beauty Supply stores, twice a week.)

4. Pop Some Pills

Viviscal, a twice-daily supplement rich in biotin and a marine extract, can promote hair growth and density, says Dr. Zeichner. Derms are also keeping an eye on

Nutrafol, which increases blood flow to the scalp and decreases inflammation, says Dr. Sadick.

5. Get Lit Up

Red-light therapy, long known for its antiaging benefits (it increases collagen production), is also great at stimulating circulation—key for hair growth. It offers antiinflammatory, follicleenhancing benefits as well, says Dr. Zeichner. Try it at the dermatologist’s office or at home with a laser comb (HairMax Prima 7 LaserComb, $199, hairmax .com, has been FDA-cleared to treat hair loss)—run it through strands Marcia Brady–style for 15 minutes, three times a week.

6. Thwart

Thinning

Thanks to heredity, high levels of stress, or hormonal shifts (like postbaby), thinning can start as early as your 30s. “We recommend Rogaine in these cases,” says Dr. Zeichner. Its key ingredient, minoxidil, is the only FDA-approved topical to resprout strands, which it does by reactivating and increasing the size of dormant follicles. Massage in daily, and in three months, you may see up to 25 percent more hair.

Crow’s-Feet

Ten hours: On average, that’s how long a study found college-age women spend on their phones a day. Squinting at tiny text and staring at eye-straining blue light can damage collagen, causing skin to crease earlier than usual, says Elizabeth Hale, MD, an NYC derm. “Crow’s-feet are at the top of my millennial patients’ list of complaints,” she says. Adjust your screen’s brightness to match that of the room you’re in, then bump up the font size. An eye serum with hyaluronic acid and peptides (like M-61’s) can plump and boost firmness long-term. Necklace Lines

Repetitive chin-to-chest movements to look at every notification can weaken the thin, delicate skin of the neck, leading to horizontal lines and sagging, explains Joshua Zeichner, MD, a dermatologist in NYC, who notes the skin in this area is already prone to premature aging. To prevent “tech neck,” elevate your screen to eye level and apply a retinol-spiked cream (see Paula’s Choice, left), which helps keep skin smooth and firm.

THE SUN AND YOUR CELL

Blame it on high-energy visible (HEV) light—the blue light emitted by most smart devices. Science suggests that, like UV, it may cause brown spots and wrinkles, says Marnie Nussbaum, MD, an NYC derm. (Thankfully, HEV hasn’t been linked to skin cancer.) As a result, brands are tapping into ingredients designed to protect skin from HEV. Junetics’ SPF and Make’s primer use vegetable-derived melanin to absorb HEV before it penetrates skin, while Murad’s antioxidant cream strengthens skin as you snooze. A free hack for iPhone users: Switch to Night Shift mode to reduce the amount of blue light emitted.

How to Get Him to Open Up MOST GUYS WOULD RATHER ENDURE A HOUSEWIVES MARATHON THAN REVEAL THEIR FEELS. BUT DON’T TRY DRAGGING IT OUT OF HIM. WE HAVE TACTICS THAT WILL MAKE YOUR MAN WANT TO TALK ABOUT HIS EMOTIONS— NO TEQUILA REQUIRED. BY ANDRE A STANLE Y

T GREG LOTUS/ TRUNK ARCHIVE

THE COMMUNICATION break-

down between the sexes can often be summed up like this: You like to talk about your feelings; he doesn’t. It’s not his fault. “Boys are taught to be less emotionally open than girls,” says Ronald Levant, a professor of psychology at the University of Akron. “They are socialized by their peers and parents never to cry and to embrace traditional norms of masculinity, like being aggressive.” (Those action-hero figures aren’t saving the world by negotiating with the bad guy....) But the era of the man bun has ushered in a willingness on the part of guys to be less guarded. Millennial men are more down for deep conversations with their partner, says Levant, but there are differences in how men and women communicate that can make it seem like he’s hiding his feelings. “We all share the same need for love,” assures Levant, “but men don’t always grasp how to use talking as a way to get that.” For a lot of men, physical contact (read: sex!) or even just hanging with you is their way of letting you in. Here, some methods to get his lips moving.

STRIKE WHEN HE’S BUSY When was the last time your boyfriend bonded

with his buddies over a quiet dinner? Exactly. Guys aren’t wired for that at-close-range communication. “Face-to-face conversations can make men feel vulnerable, so getting into a serious discussion while engaged in an activity, like driving, feels safer,” says Deborah Tannen, PhD, a professor of linguistics at Georgetown University and author of You Just Don’t Understand! Sustained eye contact can also cause confusion. “Between two men, a direct gaze can be a sign that you’re looking for a fight,” she explains. And with a woman, a guy may perceive a long stare as you being DTF, not down to talk. “Either way, he may close up because he’s either too on guard or too focused on sex,” Tannen says.

EASE INTO THE DEEP STUFF

“Not all men are used to describing their emotions, so when you ask him what he’s feeling, he may not know what to say,” says Mark Feinberg, PhD, a professor of health and human development at Pennsylvania State University. Worse, it can seem like you’re calling him out for withholding, which puts him on the defensive. So avoid the “Why so quiet?” approach. Instead, try these four words that do a better job of encouraging a guy to articulate what he’s feeling: “I’m here to listen.” That phrase sends the clear message that you’re ready to hear him. Then, if he tells you, “My boss hated my presentation,” rather than firing off questions about his boss’s reaction, use empathy to take the conversa-

LOVE GIVE HIM THE FLOOR tion deeper. Say: “I’d be so bummed if that happened to me!” which signals that you’re not judging him.

TALK ABOUT HIS FAVES

While listening to him reel off baseball stats may not feel like bonding, Feinberg points out that “dismissing small talk as superficial is a mistake.” Engaging over lighter topics your guy cares about can actually bridge toward more emotionally charged subjects. When you say, “Let’s talk,” to a dude, he senses something is wrong. But casual chitchat about his interests reinforces that this isn’t an interrogation. If you take his side about that ump’s bad calls, he may be more likely to open up about stuff that matters to you later.

When he does start chatting, it’s your turn to zip it. “When women are conversing with each other, there’s more mutual engagement—overlapping, interjecting, and commenting—and less turn-taking,” Feinberg says. “But for a guy, it’s easier to get his point across when he gets a chance to say something without interruption.”

GET HIM LAUGHING

Could watching Fallon be the cure to a communication freeze? It may sound silly, but yeah. A study in Human Nature found that people are more likely to share personal details after a laugh. Just make sure your man isn’t the punchline, Tannen says. He might take that as a hit to his masculinity and clam up. ■

That’s What He Said!

GUYS TELL WHAT MAKES THEM MORE WILLING TO SPILL THEIR GUTS.

“As hard as it is for me to express strong feelings, it’s often even more difficult to admit that I have no feelings about something that really matters to my partner, like her friend issues. It would be cool if a girl made it okay for me to sometimes not have anything to say.” —WILL T., 25

“If you want to keep us talking, don’t use what we tell you as leverage later on. Sometimes, I’ll open up about something, and my wife will bring up what I said when we’re having an argument and use it against me.” —JUSTIN S., 30

“I’m the type of person who takes a while to open up, but spending time together makes it easier. It helps if a girl doesn’t want to get into a deep conversation the minute we start hanging out. We can build up to that.” —STEVEN S., 23

THE ( ) HUS STLE TURN TINDER MESSAGING INTO AN IRL MEET-UP

1. Give Him Ideas

3. Go Deeper

4. Make It Real

Even if guys like a profile, they often hesitate to reach out because they aren’t sure what to say. Make it easy by mentioning the kind of dates you love in your bio. Write: “I’m on a constant quest to find the best gelato in town” or “I never say no to good sushi.” That way, he knows exactly what to suggest when he sends you a message.

Sure, his pics tell you a lot. But show him you’re interested in more than just his looks by mentioning something a bit more meaningful that you gleaned from his profile or messages, like, “Where was that hiking photo taken?” or even just “You crack me up.” It shows that you’re a tiny bit deeper than the Tinderbots out there, but it has the added benefit of moving things past the boring basics.

Even if you have a great connection online, there are still some guys who never move things to an actual date. If you sense you’re getting trapped in yet another game of endless chat hell, try: “Gotta run right now, but we should grab coffee sometime.” After that, resist falling back into another frustrating round of back-andforth until you have a time and place locked in on your iCal.

2. Slow Down and Be Specific When it comes to dating apps, we tend to have random, rapidfire convos with way too many people. It sucks the fun out of the experience and makes it feel impersonal. Before you fire off another “Hey!” instead try something like, “About to binge on Stranger Things. What about you?” That sort of specific detail makes you come off as a living, breathing human being.

that guy you met last week asked you out and you’re feeling fly. The thing is, you only have a first name and a string of digits. Using your sleuthing skills, it takes you .2 seconds to find him on Instagram. You keep digging and find yourself on his ex’s Twitter, screenshotting the recent tweets he Liked, and wondering if he’s still into her. Soon, you’re on to his Aunt Judy’s Facebook album from some long-ago Christmas. Is that him gnawing on a turkey leg like an extra at Medieval Times??? This is backstalking: When you dive so deep into someone’s social accounts,

it requires an extra oxygen tank. The intent sounds innocent enough—you want to get a sense of a new guy. Problem is, playing detective to such an extreme can doom a relationship before it starts. Here’s why you should curb the urge.

What’s Your Motive? You’re curious about him. You can’t remember exactly what he looks like. All legit reasons we look to a guy’s digital footprint. “We seek information to feel more comfortable about a new person,” says Stephanie Tong, PhD, assistant professor of communication at Wayne

Should You “BackStalk” Before a Date?

JUST A LIGHT BACKGROUND CHECK, FINANCIAL AUDIT, AND REFERENCE REVIEW BEFORE DRINKS…

You Got Busted BackStalking. Now What?

After a sneaky spy sesh, slipups can happen. Remember that time you accidentally Liked his brother’s Insta? Cringe. Diane Gottsman, owner of The Protocol School of Texas, offers these recovery strategies.

Own It Tell him you were checking out his account, really liked the photo, and decided to Heart it. If you’re chill about it, he will be too. State University. So there are benefits to looking through his feed. That’s how Taylor, 21, avoided a total d-bag. “I backstalked this guy, Will, who was flirting with me, and discovered on another girl’s page that she was ‘In a Relationship with Will.’ If I hadn’t seen that, I would’ve gone out with him,” she says. Beyond that dodged-abullet benefit, backstalking can help you suss out what matters in a partner, says Tracy Alloway, PhD, a psychologist who researches how social media influences decision making. If finding a guy’s shirtless gym selfie, captioned “Get swoll,” turns

you off, you know he’s not your type. Conversely, says Alloway, certain discoveries can help you develop empathy. Violette, 28, agrees: “I met a guy who was almost 30 and lived with his mom. That was a red flag. But when I figured out from his Facebook that he’d gone back to school and was working toward becoming a professor, I saw him in a different light.”

What’s the Problem?

With all those advantages, shouldn’t we all go on a backstalking binge every time we have a date? Well,

Make a Joke Say something like: “Don’t worry. I’m only a part-time P.I.” By hinting that it’s something we all do (yes, guys too), you’ll defuse the awkwardness.

Move On If he doesn’t seem to notice, there’s no reason to dwell. We are harder on ourselves and tend to overanalyze. So instead, change the convo to the awesome new restaurant you just tried.

no. Here’s why: At a certain point, backstalkers know so much about a guy that having a normal conversation—one in which you are naturally discovering things about him—can be a challenge, says Bree McEwan, PhD, an assistant professor of communication studies at DePaul University. Plus, all that covert knowledge gives an artificial feeling to the situation. And if you’ve performed the sort of intensive background check that would wow the CIA, chances are, you have intel you’d be uncomfortable admitting. The fact that he doesn’t know you know some very specific stuff about his life casts a shady vibe over the relationship in its earliest stages. Finally, just like most of us, he probably curates his online persona, which gives you a limited perspective from which to make judgments. “We tend to find out what a person makes available, and that’s not the full picture,” Tong says. The information you really want about someone is more nuanced. And for that, you need in-person interactions.

What’s Your PreDate Playbook?

With all this in mind, here’s our Cosmo-approved backstalking sweet spot: Limit your sleuthing to a cursory search that will make you feel excited about this guy— he’s cute in his pics.…He just saw a band you love.…That sort of thing. After that, step away from the social, and wait for the fun of finding out about him for real. ■ JANUARY 2017 _ COSMOPOLITAN _

If Your Boobs Could Talk LISTEN UP, BECAUSE THE GIRLS HAVE SOME THINGS THEY’VE BEEN MEANING TO, ER, GET OFF THEIR CHEST.... BY NANCY REDD

Boobs seem pretty straightforward (unless yours point east-west, of course). They give you a heads-up when your period’s on the way. They signal when it’s cold. Plus, they do their part when it comes to attracting a crush. But as close as you are to your breast friends, there’s probably a few things even you don’t know about them. So we handed your hooters the mic. Here’s what they want to say.

We Can Change Size”

Hormone fluctuations during your cycle cause glands in the breast to grow in preparation for a possible pregnancy, leading to swelling and tenderness. In fact, estrogen is also why taking the Pill can result in the (sometimes welcome) side effect of bigger boobs. “Oral contraceptives with higher amounts of estrogen in particular can cause fluid retention in the breasts and stimulate the growth of breast cells,” explains Harold Carlson, MD, chief of endocrinology and metabolism at Stony Brook School of Medicine. And they aren’t the only medicines to have that effect: Antipsychotics like Risperidone (often prescribed for bipolar disorder) and PHOTO G R A PHED BY M A RL E Y K AT E

Percentage of mothers in one study who found breastfeeding erotic. A lot of them felt guilty about it, but it’s totally normal! Hormones released during nursing might end up turning you on.

metoclopramide (a common treatment for heartburn) increase levels of the hormone prolactin, which can cause breast soreness and even occasionally stimulate growth and milk production. If you aren’t loving the situation, speak to your doctor about taking a drug that lowers prolactin levels. A hormonal IUD, like Mirena, may also have fewer side effects, because its active ingredient is progesterone. And speaking of size, bigger is not always better. It used to be that women seeking reductions were about 40, on average, but “in the past five years, the number of my patients in their teens and 20s seeking reductions has doubled,” says Brian Labow, MD, associate professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. 20s and 30s with back and neck pain or spend $300 on a custom bra,” Dr. Labow says. He sometimes removes as much as four pounds of tissue from each breast!

We’re Not a Matching Set”

Whether you have boulders or mosquito bites, for two-thirds of women, the pair don’t match—many of us have a larger left breast. If your seemingly identical twins suddenly become fraternal, head to your doctor. You could have an infection or worse.

We’re Not Ticking Time Bombs”

Yes, breast cancer is too common—1 in 8 women will have it in her lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). But that’s no reason to freak out now. “I have a lot of patients in my practice who are very concerned about breast cancer, including some under 35,” says Julie Gershon, MD, a radiologist in private practice in Avon, Connecticut. Mammograms aren’t recommended for women with average risk before age 40 (doctors may give

Contrary to what you might have been told in the past, the ACS says there isn’t much benefit to clinical breast exams at the doctor’s office or formal breast self-exams at home. Still, “it’s useful for women to know what their breasts normally feel and look like,” says Stuart J. Schnitt, MD, professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School. So once a month, right after your period, touch yourself a bit. Since breasts change throughout your cycle, checking in at the same time each month will help you identify discomfort and abnormalities over time. Be on the lookout for lumps, nodules, or thickening. Note any skin changes, discoloration, or discharge. Get anything weird checked—but

don’t panic. “Most women have benign lumps and bumps at some point in their life,” says Dr. Schnitt.

We Need a Little More Support”

Anywhere from 64 to 85 percent of women reportedly aren’t buying the right size bra! “A well-fitting underwire bra supports all breast tissue and does not lie on any part of the breast itself,” says bra expert Tina Omer, owner of lingerie boutique Aphrodite’s Closet. To find one, you need to know more than band and cup size: You also need to know about your “root shape,” the area where your breasts attach to your chest wall. If your breast root is narrow, it may require a differently shaped underwire than what many mainstream bras offer, leading to digging or poking. To figure it out, stand facing the mirror. “Your root has a width, measured under your breast, and a height, measured around the armpit,” says Omer. Using a washable marker, put a dot on the innermost, lowest, widest, and highest points of one breast, then connect them. If the shape is more like a ‘U,’ you have a narrow root, whereas if

it looks like a Nike swoosh, your root is wider, Omer explains.

We’re Sensitive to the Sun”

Walking around in a lowcut shirt exposes your ladies to UV rays—any time of year. So show off your stuff, but treat the skin on your breasts delicately; it’s slightly more sensitive than other parts of your body because it hasn’t been exposed to the elements, says New York City dermatologist Marnie Nussbaum, MD. “It’s more like the skin you were born with,” she says. “I often see patients whose face looks young but whose chest has terrible sun damage.” Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 on your twins every day. At night, pamper them with a thick moisturizer. Or maybe a boob facial? Bioxidea Cosmetics Miracle 24 Breast Mask ($29 for 3, amazon.com) takes the sheet-mask trend beyond the face, hydrating and firming your girls.

For Sweat... Lady Anti Monkey Butt Powder ($9, amazon.com) may seem like a gag gift, but its sweat-sopping— and thus shirtsaving—abilities are not to be laughed off. Never suffer from under-boob irritation again.

For Snoozing... Stomach sleepers, rejoice: The uniquely shaped DevLon T-Wedge Breast Bolster pillow ($50, amazon. com) takes the pressure off your breasts.

For Sex... Surprise your lover when you take your top off with a Gold Underbreast Sternum Tattoo ($12, etsy.com). Perfect for those who would enjoy erotic body art with less commitment than vajazzling.

For Your Cycle... Many girls get moody when they PMS, some get hungry, some get swollen boobs. For those women, there’s Boobie Cozy ($25, etsy .com), a hot or cold pad shaped to cuddle the breast.

Andrology last year. A woman’s most powerful extragenital erogenous zones are her breasts. Some lucky ladies even climax from breast play alone (the nipplegasm... it’s real!). Ask your bae to give your girls their share of licking, rubbing, sucking, and tugging. “Nipple stimulation sends sensory signals to the same region of women’s brain as the clitoris, vagina, and cervix,” says psychologist Barry R. Komisaruk, PhD, coauthor of The Orgasm Answer Guide. The reason might

be evolutionary: “The same oxytocin receptors around the mammary glands are found in uterine muscle, and stimulating them may promote procreation of the species,” he says.

making it prone to eczema and acne. To keep your cleavage clear, shower ASAP after workouts, using a body wash with benzoyl peroxide on the affected area. Then apply a retinoid, which prevents and treats acne and can help with scarring, says NYC derm Dendy E. HOW TO TAKE THE BEST BELFIE EVER If you do the #CosmoButtChallenge and don’t post about it on Instagram, did it really happen?

Wear a pair of butt-hugging pants, then hike them up to your natural waist. So what if you end up with a wedgie? It will only help to define each of your buns. B This picture is all about the booty, so show it off! Start with your backside toward the mirror.

Stagger your feet, angling your back heel toward the mirror and your front foot out to the side.

Twist your torso toward the mirror (this will narrow your waist), holding the camera in your back hand.

Shift your weight to your front foot, lift your heel, and pop that hip out.

GET FITTER W ITH FOOD

“You can strength-train all you want, but if you don’t have the proper nutrients, you won’t see results,” says Amanda Foti, RD, founder of Eat.Fit.Live. Aim for 80 to 100 grams of protein per day to increase muscle mass. Be sure to have a 10- to 20-gram protein snack, like Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, about 30 minutes pre-workout, then a proteinpacked (20+ grams) meal, like salmon with edamame or an omelet and turkey bacon, within an hour after sweating.

5

BRIDGES

Lie faceup on a mat, knees bent, feet flat, and arms at sides. Press down with heels, lifting hips up and squeezing glutes [shown]. Pause. Lower, hovering butt above mat. Repeat. REACH FOR THE SKY Sure, this move is straight out of an ’80s aerobics video, but those women had buns, hon. Send your pelvis as high as possible. Says Gonzalez: “The higher the hips, the better the contraction.”

the rest of us (i.e., human), this scenario might sound a teeny bit familiar: You’re flipping through Snapchat when you land on Perfect Girl’s Story. There she is, with her shampoo-commercial hair, in her HGTV-worthy apartment with her Ryan Gosling–look-alike boyfriend…or whatever the irritating details of her annoyingly ideal life happen to be. You should feel happy for her, right? But the truth is, you can’t help seething (and possibly firing off a bitchy text about her to your friends too). Definitely not the healthiest reaction, but hey, we’ve all been there. Your salvation: There are productive ways to deal when the green-eyed monster rears its head. “Feeling

jealous can provide valuable information about yourself,” says Zelana Montminy, author of 21 Days to Resilience. It might even give you a clear sense of what you want in life. So next time P-Girl posts a zero-body-fat bikini pic, consult these pointers.

...Because once you’ve zeroed in on your desires, you have to make them a reality. “Instead of allowing other people’s success to drag us down, it’s smarter to use it as inspiration,” suggests Wright. “Ask yourself, What could I do to be in her position?” If it’s that apartment, look at your budget and figure out what you’d need to afford such a dreamy place. It might mean cutting back on needless expenses, like those overpriced cocktails on girls’ night out, or finding a lucrative side hustle to make extra bank, or simply giving your current place some

But it’s important to keep focused. “Remember that satisfying a yearning doesn’t require big leaps or drastic changes,” says Wright. “Sometimes it’s more helpful to do small things regularly and keep progressing.” And in the meantime, if you see you-know-who showcasing her baller life, take a breath and remind yourself that soon you’re gonna have the life you want too. ■

LOOK INSIDE... ...Because what you’re feeling is not about her. It’s about you. “These sorts of negative emotions are often triggered by someone else having something we value but don’t have ourselves,” says relationship expert Judith Wright. gyno info BEER AND BOOTY ● BIRTH CONTROL BENEFITS ● LUBES YOU’LL LOVE

Ask Dr. Ashton

THE LOWDOWN ON DOWN THERE We asked Cosmo’s contributing ob-gyn Jennifer Ashton, MD, to answer your most pressing sexual-health questions in 100 words or less.

If a guy drinks beer, then goes down on me, can yeast residue in his mouth give me an infection?

Q

A Beer can make strange things happen, but this isn’t one of them. There are thousands of strains of yeast in the world, and the kind used in brewing are not the same as those that tend to

78

cause a yeast infection. Plus, the saliva in your partner’s mouth contains powerful enzymes that help kill yeast. If you’re getting yeast infections, worry less about your partner’s drinking and more about the balance of bacteria in your vagina, which can shift with your cycle, when you take antibiotics, and after you wear a damp swimsuit or tight, moist underwear.

I heard if you vomit right after taking your Pill, it doesn’t work. Is this true?!

Q

A It depends how soon you get sick. The Pill can start working in as little as 20 minutes but won’t be completely absorbed into your system by then. That can take up to four hours. So if you hurl in that time

already in your vagina but won’t make your uterine lining shed any faster. For some women, this makes period sex more painful, but for others, the endorphin release of an orgasm can temporarily relieve period symptoms.

Could a “bigger” guy give me more UTIs?

Q

Can a vibrator numb me if I use it too much?

Q

A No one has formally studied this, but physiologically speaking, it’s possible— too high a speed, too much pressure, or excessive frequency could all irritate the skin around the clitoris or form a callus. There’s a theory that ODing can cause desensitization in the way that we can damage our hearing by listening to extremely loud music. That said, I’d rather women experiment with a vibrator— either alone or with a partner— than not. Many women have never experienced that sensation. If you’re requiring more and more stimulation to climax, set your toy aside for a few days, then try again.

My friend told me that having sex during your period makes it go away faster. Does this work?

JENNIFER LIVINGSTON/ TRUNK ARCHIVE

Q

A That would be awesome, but no. One reason why it may seem like sex speeds up your flow: Semen contains something called a prostaglandin, which is a kind of hormone that can induce uterine contractions. It can help expel blood that’s

20

frame, medical common sense says it’s the same as not taking your Pill. When you feel better, take the next pill in your pack— there’s no harm in swallowing two in one day. It never hurts to have him wear a condom as backup though. Remember: The Pill has a 9 percent failure rate with typical use.

A Probably not, and here’s why: One cause of UTIs has to do with a guy slipping out midthrust, which happens to all guys but is more common among the less endowed. If he accidentally jabs your rectum or perineum before he reenters you, that could carry bacteria from one area to the other— it only takes a teeny amount of bacteria to cause an infection. Whatever his size, simply having more sex increases the likelihood of ending up with a UTI. To prevent postcoital unpleasantness, do two things before and after sex: Clean yourself (with a wipe or shower) and pee.

Is it okay to have sex the night before my gyno appointment?

GOOD-FOR-YOU LUBES Some lubes can seriously up your chances of contracting bacterial vaginosis, which in turn is associated with a 60 percent increase in your risk for HIV. That’s because glycerin—an ingredient in many lubes and some pre-lubed condoms—can upset the bacterial balance in your vag and damage your vaginal-cell lining, according to multiple studies. These natural lubricants are glycerin-free and feel just as good. —DANIELLE KAM

Q

A You can do the deed but only if you use a condom. It’s not an official policy, but the vast majority of ob-gyns recommend skipping sex if you have a checkup that day or the following one. Semen in the vagina can obscure Pap smear results or interfere with testing and cultures. And don’t think you can sneak unprotected sex past your doc—we can tell. Quit Baking Your Bod (for Good!) STRANGE AS IT SOUNDS, STUDIES SHOW THAT TANNING IS AS ADDICTIVE AS DRUGS. LEARN ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW TO BREAK THE HABIT WITHOUT SACRIFICING THAT SEXY, BLISSED-OUT FEELING.

even if you know better (cancer! wrinkles!), sunbathing can be hard to quit. Whether in a tanning bed in January or on the beach in July, tanners aren’t hooked on just the look of bronzed skin but also the hit-meagain rush it elicits. “UV rays trigger the production of opioidlike endorphins,” says Bryon Adinoff, MD, professor of alcohol and drug abuse research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Those neurochemicals can improve your mood and reduce stress and pain. “They have the same effect as morphine and heroin.” In one study, 74 percent of people who tan a few times a week exhibited an addictive-like relationship and some experienced jitters and nausea without rays. So save your skin now, sun junkies, in 12 easy steps.

80 _ COSMOPOLITAN _ JANUARY 2017

Step 1

Repeat This: “It Isn’t Too Late” “There’s this ‘what’s done is done’ mentality, but every day that you protect yourself makes a difference,” says NYC dermatologist Doris Day, MD. An Australian study found that people who started

slathering themselves with SPF 15 daily had skin that looked no older after almost five years. Step 2

Use the Mirror as Motivation If the prospect of skin cancer and saggy skin doesn’t

spook you, consider the “acne tattoo.” Shading the skin around pimples can temporarily make them less obvious, but in the long run, “tanning can cause oil glands to overgrow and darken existing scars,” says Dr. Day. “A mild scar at age 20 could look horrible at 40.”

MIKE GARTEN

BY K RIS T E N D O L D

TOASTY BY A FIRE? GOOD. TOASTY IN A TANNING BED? BAD.

Step 3

Step 6

Go cold turkey and you might relapse. Instead, decrease sun exposure over time, says Jenifer Cullen, PhD, a clinical psychologist at McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts. So if you tan three days a week, try twice a week for a month, then just once weekly. If outside, swap oils for SPF 30, and don’t get your rays during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Tan less and less until you’re able to stop completely. Alternating real tans with spray tans is another way to cut back without giving up that golden glow.

Self-tanners have improved massively, insists makeup artist Joyce Bonelli. Pick one with argan oil to fight winter flakiness. For a quick color shift, use St. Tropez Tanning Essentials Express Bronzing Mousse ($44, sephora.com), which rinses off. Or add a little bit of Cocoa Brown’s Instant Tan Bronzing Gel ($10, rickys nyc.com) to foundation.

Wean Yourself

Step 4

Reward Good Behavior Buy apparel that allows you to enjoy the sun worry-free. Cosmo editors love Mott 50: The clothes are minimalist chic with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 50—a major jump from the average white cotton tee, which has a UPF of 5. (Don’t forget SPF on your face, hands, and feet.) Step 5

Glow From the Inside Out Melanoma is the second most common cancer in young women. And just one indoor-tanning session can up the risk of squamous-cell carcinoma by 67 percent!

HEALTH

Luminescence can be had naturally: Eating fruits and veggies heavy on water, vitamins, and antioxidants (like berries, tomatoes, watermelon, and kale) keeps skin radiant, says Dr. Day. As will brightening serums with vitamin C and peptides. Try Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Hydra-Pure Vitamin C Brightening Serum ($95, sephora.com).

Fake It Well

Step 7

Get Happy “Addictive behaviors are often motivated by mood,” says psychologist Sherry Pagoto, PhD, professor of preventive and behavioral medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. If you use UV rays to deal with stress, get that tanner’s high from a healthier source: Hit the gym, watch a comedy, or have sex (solo counts). Step 8

Invest in a Light Box Sun boosts the happiness chemical serotonin in your brain. A light box does the same but without the UV rays. Get a box that provides 10,000 lux, like Verilux HappyLight Liberty Natural Spectrum Energy Lamp ($100, bedbathandbeyond .com). Flip it on for 30 minutes in the morning while you’re eating breakfast. Step 9

Eat Your D “Many women lie out under the guise of getting vitamin D, but that’s so false—incidental sun exposure provides most women

with plenty,” says Dr. Day. “If you’re truly deficient, take a supplement or consume D-rich foods, such as salmon, tuna, egg yolks, or fortified milk.” Step 10

Exercise If you head to the bed to mask imperfections like cellulite, working out is a more sustainable solution. “The most effective way to blast fat is intense interval training,” says exercise physiologist Michele Olson, PhD. Do all-out cardio for 20 seconds, followed by 20 seconds of rest, for 20 rounds. Defining your muscles with strength training disguises cellulite. Holding 10-pound weights, do 3 sets of 20 lunges and 20 squats. S t e p 11

Contour Right Contouring can create the same chiseled cheekbones and structured jaw that tanning seems to. Try Bonelli’s goof-proof tip: “Using a matte one shade darker than your foundation, draw a three on each side of your face, hitting the outer corners of your forehead, under your cheekbones, and your jawline.” S t e p 12

Rock Pale Skin A tan isn’t the only way to look hot and healthy. Eyebrow tinting and semipermanent lashes create contrast. Red lipstick with blue undertones flatters a blank canvas of fairer skin. Light-infused liquid foun-

dation has a silkier finish than powder. ■

SWEATSHIRT, Joe’s. BODYSUIT, Lively. SHOES, Chiara Ferragni Collection

We all have our emotional triggers. One of Jenna Dewan Tatum’s is Lifetime’s Dance Moms. She was a year old when her parents split, leading Jenna and her mom, who got a job in pharmaceuticals, to relocate every three years. They finally settled in Grapevine, Texas, when Jenna was in high school. Her one constant? Dance. “Everywhere we would move, I’d find a new studio,” she tells me over a grilled kale salad at L.A.’s Chateau Marmont. “That show gives me such anxiety. I lived it. I can’t watch.” A chance meeting with Dance Moms’ infamous coach, Abby Lee Miller, was especially jarring. She says Abby compared her to the reality series’ now-14-year-old breakout star, Maddie Ziegler. “She was like, ‘I knew you were the Maddie! Come to my studio! Bring your daughter!’” Jenna recalls, “I was like, absolutely not.”

BEAUTY TIP A smoldering smoky eye is crazy-easy to achieve with the doubleended Yves Saint Laurent Eye Duo Smoker, $30. Pair it with a nude lip...and let your eyes do the talking.

Jenna, who is the face of Danskin, is all too familiar with the brutal realities of the dance world. “Your whole life is a competition, and it made me so hard on myself. If I dropped my heel on a turn, it was a day of crying. My mom would be like, ‘It’s okay. You’re your own worst critic.’” Jenna kept at it, and as a freshman at the University of Southern California, she got her big break dancing backup for Janet Jackson. Stints with P.Diddy and *NSYNC soon followed. But it wasn’t until the 2006 dance-mance Step Up that the world—and her costar Channing Tatum— would know her name. Clearly, Jenna made a lasting impression—she and Magic Mike, er, we mean Channing, have been married for more than seven years and have a 3-and-a-halfyear-old daughter, Everly. This January marks one year since Jenna blew everyone’s minds aping Channing as Magic Mike on Spike’s Lip Sync Battle. Her performance to Ginuwine’s “Pony”—complete with painted-on abs, floor humping, and yes, a lap dance for her slack-jawed husband, who was also her competitor— did more to endear the 36-yearold to fans than perhaps even her turns in Witches of East End, American Horror Story, and Supergirl. She says she told Channing, “If I’m gonna do this, I’m gonna do you, because what else do I have?! People are going to cheer for you if you walk out there and do nothing!” She wasn’t wrong. But let the record show, she crushed him. Channing had to dress up as (and actually bring out) Beyoncé to come anywhere near besting his wife. And even then, the internet was outraged when the couple were awarded a tie. JDT was clearly the victor.

There is hope for a rematch though. The duo are currently working on a dance-competition reality series for NBC. While the details are still under wraps, she says the goal is to “make it one giant party every week,” and adds, “I’m going to be dancing. I’m sure I’m going to make Chan dance at some point.” (All together now, yaaas!!!) For a peek into Jenna’s world, read on. COSMOPOLITAN: To be fair, I can see why Abby thought you were “the Maddie.” JENNA: Yeah, I was a studio kid. Jazz and lyrical were my favorites. I was really dramatic. Channing looks at the videos and has the biggest laugh. But I thank dance all the time because I’m such a partier. I like to get down. I would have been a little too wild in high school if it hadn’t been for dance. I was a cheerleader and into that, but if anything was going to interfere with my dance career, it wasn’t happening.

You didn’t party at all? I had a couple nights of partying. One night, I got so drunk. We drank Everclear, and I ended up throwing up. “Pony” was popular then, and you know that background—bluch bluch bluch. For that year, every time it would come on, everyone would say, “That’s Jenna’s song!”

That song haunts you! Yeah, I actually suggested it for Magic Mike. I was like, “Who better to strip to than Ginuwine? Come on!” Now, it’s obviously the calling card to that movie. When it came out, we’d be at a restaurant and they’d start

playing it because Chan was there. Then Lip Sync Battle happened, and now it happens to me too!

Let’s talk about how being a backup dancer on tour seems like the best job ever. I had the time of my life. Your hotels are taken care of. You’re going on private jets. But you’re living a life that’s not real. And there’s always drama. People get sick of each other. Friendships and alliances change. There’s an underlying darkness. It’s literally like Game of Thrones. Then the tour ends, you go back to your apartment, and you’re like, What do I do now?

Were you instantly attracted to him? Obviously, he’s super hot. I was like, “All right! Okay!” So we did the scenes. After, they were like, “Just stand next to each other on camera.” There’s a video of this, and we’re completely flirting in it. I’m looking at him going, “You’re so big! You’re so tall!” And he’s like, “You dance really good.” I sound like Minnie Mouse, and he’s talking so deep. Then it ends on us just looking at each other being like, “Hi.” We’ve kept that. We’ve gotta show Evie one day.

And the sex—how was it? That was one of our biggest connections. It’s just always been there. We’re not those people who can just say, screw it, let’s be sexual. We have to be connected in the right way. But I’ve always been a very sexual person. We definitely have a very happy and healthy [sex life]. Something about being a dancer connects you to your physical body. It’s primal, earthy, sexual

Ever not been in the mood with him? Oh yeah. Anyone who says that doesn’t happen is absolutely lying. There are times when you’re too busy, too tired. I think the difference between women and men is that men are physical—gotta get it done. Me, I have to feel emotionally connected. I have to be in a good place.

I saw on your Snapchat that you’re a Reiki healer. What’s that all about? I could give you a Reiki healing if you wanted! I like to play around. I’ll do it with Evie when she’s getting overwhelmed. She thinks it’s so funny. It’s an ancient healing modality from Japan where you tap into a conscious energy conflict. Chan loves it. He gets all the nice side effects of having a hippie wife. He drank a vitamin one time, and it gave him hives. I did something, and it went away. Now, was that

because timing-wise it had left his body by the time I was done? Or do we think it’s because I have powers? I don’t know. But he’s like, you can try it on me!

Have you always been into the alterna-spiritual stuff? I realized very early on that I was sensitive to people’s energy. My friends call me the crystal lady. My bedroom is, like, gridded with them. They all carry different vibrations. When I travel, I pull them out of my pockets. Channing’s like, “Are you kidding me, babe?”

And you’re a vegan, right? I’m a vegetarian/vegan. I’m not gonna fight someone if there’s a little bit of cheese. When I was pregnant, I was in London, and it was hard to keep that diet. We actually got pregnant at the worst time. I found out right after I filmed the pilot for the Witches of East End, and then we spent six months in London while Chan was doing Jupiter Ascending. It was not a planned baby. It was crazy, but we figured it out. You’ve just got to trust and follow the flow of life. ■

SNOW FL AKE M ARTINI Lemon wedge Sugar 1.5 oz. vanilla vodka 1 oz. Godiva white chocolate liqueur .75 oz. white crème de cacao 1 oz. half-and-half Rub a lemon wedge around the rim of a martini glass. Dip the rim in sugar (dust off excess). In a shaker, mix the liquids with ice, then strain into your glass.

SILVER LINING

Just like a sugared rim makes any drink more festive, cuticle art (it’s a thing!) adds an extraspecial sparkle to your ring stack.

STEP 1 Apply two coats of a semi-sheer pink (we’re crushing on JinSoon Nail Lacquer in Muse, $18), followed by a top coat. DRESS, SelfPortrait. EARRINGS, Sarah Magid Jewelry. RINGS (right pointer, middle), Bliss Lau; (ring finger) Avec New York

STEP 2 With a striping brush (try Sally Hansen’s I Heart Nail Art Tool Kit, $6), trace a thin line of silver glitter polish (a chunky one like Essie Set in Stones, $9, is eye-catching) along the cuticle.

A FIRM GRASP Palming your glass sends a signal that you’re confident and down for a good time.

FIDGETING Playing with your hair or purse strap seems innocent enough but comes off as nervous and insecure.

BOTH HANDS This poised position can come off uptight but may be practical for the spill-prone. A LOOSE GRIP This relaxed stance signals you’d rather be meeting someone new or catching up with your friends. YOUR PINKIE OUT It may be subconscious but could read like you’re uneasy in your setting.

ON YOUR HIP A classically seductive posture sends seriously sexy vibes. ON YOUR PHONE Constantly checking your feed shows that you would rather be elsewhere (or feel awkward). HANGING LOOSE BY YOUR SIDE This casual, confidence stance makes you look approachable—great, if you’re trying to expand your social circle.

METALLIC FINISH

Part chrome, part oil slick, this mash-up mimics the mule’s signature copper cup. STEP 1 Paint on a coat of gold polish (try Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Go for Gold, $5). Let it dry. STEP 2 Apply nail-foil adhesive (find it on Amazon) all over. Wait for it to get tacky (it’ll turn clear), then press silver nail foil (also on Amazon) onto nails, metallic side up. STEP 3 Smooth down the foil, then lift the remaining clear plastic. The silver will stick to the gold, creating the chrome-slick effect. Finish with regular top coat (quickdry can cause foil to shrink).

1 RE S O L U T I O N 1

Have. More. Sex. Because getting it on should happen as often as you damn well please! And research shows having regular sex reduces stress by releasing endorphins and oxytocin—and (get this!) it helps you sleep better, fights off colds, and can even make your skin glowy. So here’s how to put your more-action plan into, well, action. Make Every Day a Foreplay Day It’s no secret among sex experts that extended foreplay leads to satisfying sex and better orgasms for women—score! Sexologist Emily Morse takes it a step further: “We think of foreplay as what we do during the quick buildup to the main event. But it pays to view foreplay as an ongoing seduction that begins immediately after your last orgasm and continues right up until you two are in bed again.” So once you catch your breath, start revving your engines for your next time, whether it’s in an hour, a few days, or a week. Focus on the lusty looks you give each other in passing, the sexy texts you send, and the kissing and touching that’ll lead to your next session.

Screw Spontaneity There are two types of desire: spontaneous and responsive. Spontaneous is that magical, must-have-you-now encounter that starts with a flirty glance in his direction and ends with simultaneous orgasms in an outdoor shower—think Hollywood movie sex. But guess what? Studies indicate that only about 15 percent of women (compared with 75 percent of men) experience desire this way. So instead, focus on responsive desire, which you two generate yourselves. Plan a night in to blast The Weeknd, make fancy cocktails, and dance really close—and let it lead to bedroom high notes that last all, um, weeknd.

TRY IT!

THE 20-MINUTE M A K E- O U T Set a timer, and challenge yourselves to spend a full 20 minutes kissing. This move increases your desire —in less time than it takes to wait for a new Candy Crush life! Start by nibbling on his upper, then lower lip. Take your tongue and trace his mouth, then move slowly down his body with nothing but lip action— and have him do the same to you. By the time the buzzer goes off, you’ll both be wild with lust.

GET YOURS!

Yeah, it’s good to be a giver, but too often, we put our partner’s pleasure before our own. So no more of that this year. Instead, prioritize your own orgasm with these bold moves.

Make Oral Even Hotter

Give Yourself the Finger

The next time he’s going downtown, encourage him to insert his fingers and slowly stroke inside you while you shift your hips to guide his tongue to just the right spot. This blended-O bliss event will change your life.

In missionary, keep your legs bent underneath your thighs while he enters you at the perfect G-spot-loving angle. In this uplifting position, you’ll have open access to rub your clitoris in small circles with the pads of your pointer and middle fingers as he grinds.

PUSH YOUR BOUNDARIES

Being adventurous in bed can make you two feel like primal pioneers conquering new territories (aka each other!). Research shows that frequent sexploration enhances your connection.

Dabble in Domination

Plan a Sultry Surprise

Get a Little Freaky

Finally, a from-behind position where you’re in control. While he lies on his back, straddle him, facing his feet, and get on all fours. Back it up until he’s inside you, then move at your desired pace. Your G-spot gets some serious stimulation—and he gets to enjoy the view.

The next time he picks you up for date night, greet him at the door in nothing but your bra and panties or just a bath towel, and let him know that you still need a few more minutes to get ready. Your restaurant rezzie can totally wait....

Blindfold him with something you already have in your house—a scarf, his tie, your cami— and trace your fingers all along his body until he’s all warmed up. Every minute that goes by will build his anticipation for when you finally remove it and let him see your sexy self.

This is your time to be lazy and sexy. Your only mission is to watch TV with your boo. Yep! A study in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships says that couples who don’t have the same friend group reported more satisfying relationships when they shared TV shows, books, and movies. While you cuddle, binge on a show that neither of you has seen. Research also indicates that sharing new experiences brings you closer, so go ahead and dive into that weird doc about how octopuses mate. Just don’t be surprised if he can’t control his own tentacles around you later!

When you’re in your usual GOT (that’s girl-on-top, not Game of Thrones, ha) and you feel him about to climax, guide him toward the edge of the mattress. (Extra points if you two can do this with him still inside you— it’s not easy.) Let his arms and head dangle off the side of the bed while you get back to grinding. Not only will you feel like the queen of his personal Westeros, the extra rush of blood to his head will also give him a full-body experience. If good sex is poetry, porn is a tweet—fun but fleeting. So why do I treat it like a CIA secret? I wasn’t raised religious, but my school taught abstinence-based sex ed. This, combined with body shyness, made masturbation, porn, and sex feel like dirty things. Over the years, I’ve evolved to become intellectually sex-positive. On a subconscious level, watching porn and masturbating still feel “wrong” to me. But that’s okay! Feeling a little shame is nothing to be ashamed of. In fact, it often fuels my arousal, since keeping it on the DL involves a certain amount of “sneaking” and feeling “dirty.” It’s all part of the excitement. While my viewing frequency goes down if I’m having regular sex, I never completely stop. Porn is an itch that just needs scratching. Most guys are this way, I think. So unless your guy’s porn habit is affecting your sex life in a noticeable, negative way, I wouldn’t worry. And if you’re reading this and thinking, “Interesting, but my man doesn’t watch porn,” well, he may just be as skilled at hiding it as I am.

“I Love It, and I’m Not Ashamed” I love porn. Yep, I said it. Porn is, and always has been, my most reliable friend. It’s there for me no matter my relationship status, mood, or even the time of day. It’s a fantasy, a distraction, a convenience, and a safety. And the two of us have spent some significant time together since I discovered my first Playboy in middle school. Nowadays, watching it is like brushing my teeth, and I’ll put it this way: I haven’t had a cavity in 20 years. I admit that if I didn’t spend so many hours scrolling, I’d definitely have

“I’M ALL ABOUT THE ORGASM FACE”

I have this odd porn fetish: faces. Leave the headless sex robots on Reddit’s Gone Wild page to other guys. I like seeing the way a woman’s eyes widen when she feels pleasure, how her satisfaction ripples out to her lips and cheeks. Any desire she had to pose or perform is stripped away, and instead, you see her at her most honest—and, to me, her most beautiful. So let me see her orgasm face. I’ll admire her ass later. —Nate Hopper’s writing has appeared in Esquire and Time.

the time to throw myself into becoming something great— like an astronaut! But I love porn too much. A lot of people view porn negatively, and the irony is that most of us watch it... and those who say they don’t probably have a subscription to Brazzers (that’s the best HD porn site, fyi). Porn can actually make your relationship stronger. My girlfriend and I are open about it—I wouldn’t be with her if I couldn’t be honest!— and it has inspired some sexy new moves and strengthened our connection. Sure, porn can never replace being with a woman...but if she cancels a date, it’s a safe plan B. So my astronaut ambitions will have to wait.

“Watching with a signficant other is good for exploring different ways to have sex and can help you become more comfortable with your partner. Everyone needs a little inspiration!”

It didn’t occur to me not to let my phone out of my hands until it was too late. By then, my fiancée was reciting the very specific search terms I’d accidentally left open. I played dumb. She laughed. I was mortified. We didn’t talk about it further, though, because we were in a car my buddy was driving, and this kind of talk required privacy. Or...maybe it was a talk we didn’t need to have? Is there really a moral imperative to discuss porn habits? It’s not like it’s the same as disclosing an STI or that you’re a Smash Mouth fan. A friend of mine who’s a sex therapist says that, as long as what you’re into is legal and doesn’t reveal any troubling hidden facets of your personality, not telling your partner is a matter of discretion, not secrecy. My girlfriend and I seemed to have a silent agreement that I could indulge in porn occasionally, as long as she didn’t see evidence of it and as long as she did see evidence that I was wildly attracted to her. So we never spoke of it again. For us, this works. If your relationship is strong enough to survive holiday-travel drama and restaurant indecision, it should be strong enough to overlook his habit—or yours. If not, well, I hope he’s careful with his phone.

“Afterward, I Feel Disgusting” Lately, I’ve been trying to wean myself off porn. Because after about 15 years of devoted, almost daily watching, masturbating to it makes me really depressed. Switching mindlessly from video to video is pleasurable enough in the moment, but when the deed is done, I’m struck with a deep, disgusted, I-want-acigarette feeling. But orgasms are supposed to feel good! No one told me that jerking off to porn would make me feel like shit. Why? For one, porn objectifies women with its fake storylines, like sex with stepmothers, student-teacher hookups, and endless other sleazy scenarios. Then there’s the larger reason: When I orgasm to porn, I can’t help but think that I’ve literally wasted a part of myself watching two humans performing pointless sex instead of enjoying it with a person I care about. It’s then when I think, Life is meaningless. And when I look down at the soiled napkin in my hand, it’s hard not to believe it. —Matthew Kassel’s writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal and New York.

Any new ideas for how to have sex while I have my period without the bed looking like a murder scene?

My boyfriend is uncircumcised. Are there certain positions that will feel better for us both? Q

A Uncut guys have even more nerve endings, so try the super-cuddly Bent Spoons, suggests sexologist Jill McDevitt, PhD. You get to be the little spoon, but before he enters you, bend at the waist so your top half is perpendicular to his body. This angle makes you feel supertight, which creates good gliding for his foreskin while also giving him a direct route to your G-spot. But you don’t need to reinvent your sex game just because your guy’s got something extra down there. “Many men report that the foreskin’s friction against the vaginal walls already makes sex feel amazing,” McDevitt says. “No special positions required!”

A Here’s a way to keep your towels clean and avoid a CSIlike situation: Try Flex, a new disposable menstrual disc that holds five tampons’ worth of fluid, meaning you can safely wear it for 12 hours at a time ($20 for 8, flexfits.com). To insert it, just pinch the ring in half, slide it up in your vaginal canal, and push the front of it down (instead of up like a tampon), to position the ring at the base of your cervix. (Not as hard as it sounds, promise!) And because Flex is shallow, unlike the deeper DivaCup, you can wear it during oral and vaginal sex without making a mess. “It’s a game changer,” says one of our testers, who used it with her guy. “It stayed in place and didn’t leak, thank god. Afterward, he said he didn’t even notice.”

My friend says having sex while high feels better than while drunk. Is there any truth to that? Q

A Well, technically, there are risks associated with both substances—namely, clouded judgment and unsatisfying sex. Womp. But a new study from New York University found that alcohol is also more likely to lead to postsex regret than lighting up a J. “With weed, people reported that they tend to feel more clearheaded during sex,” says Joseph Palamar, PhD, an assistant professor at

NYU School of Medicine and a lead author in the study. “A few people also said it made their orgasms stronger and more intense.” Other research confirms that both men and women believe cannabis to be an aphrodisiac. Plus, smokers tend to roll up in private places with people they trust (because, you know, pot is still illegal in most of the U.S.), so perhaps it leads to more intimate sex.

What’s a toy that’s a total stress reliever?

Since HPV is so widespread, do I have to tell my partners I have it?

Orgasms are already de-stressors, so take it to the next level of enlightenment with the Ascend 4 ($89, jimmy jane.com). Use the big end to give your shoulders a massage, then move the small end down below. Sooo much better than those chairs at the nail salon.

A “You should, including onenight stands,” says ob-gyn Amanda Meulenberg, MD. Even though one in four adults has HPV, men are often unaware unless they show symptoms such as genital warts—yet most strains are asymptomatic. Because some, like 16 and 18, can lead to cervical cancer, it’s important for him to tell future partners. “HPV can be confusing,” admits Dr. Meulenberg. “Tell your partner that it is extremely common and usually clears up on its own. Women should see their gynecologist regularly because abnormal cells can be found and treated before they progress.” Giving him the facts will give him peace of mind.

Q

Can those tingling gels really make you climax faster?

Q

A Yes! One of the main ingredients in many of those drugstore-aisle gels is L-arginine, an amino acid that naturally occurs in your body and is safe to use in sexy situations, says ob-gyn Sherry Ross, MD. Rubbing a fingertip-size amount on your clitoris increases blood flow to the area, an important step to orgasm. (The rubbing helps too, obvi.) Another ingredient to look for is menthol, which helps your body absorb the L-arginine and gives you that tingly feeling, says Dr. Ross. Try Skyn’s new Excite gel ($6, walmart.com), which contains both and is condom-safe to boot. Our tester, who tried it during sex, says, “It definitely made me more sensitive.” —JULIE VADNAL

Sexual stimuli can come from anywhere—hell, even a good plate of pasta can feel like an erotic experience. “It’s a funny idea that we’re only supposed to have sexual feelings for people who would make appropriate partners,” says sex therapist Marty Klein, PhD. “In reality, we’re constantly attracted to people, but we know better than to act on it.” It makes sense that you’d be drawn to someone who you presumably look up to and respect, because it reveals what you want in a partner. “Bottom line: It’s okay to find him ‘kind of sexy’ as long as you separate feelings from behavior,” says Klein. CLOSE ENCOUNTERS by Esther Perel

How to Speak Up in Bed GET MORE OF WHAT YOU WANT BY FOLLOWING THIS INTIMATE ADVICE.

Having sex? Fun. Talking about sex with your partner? Not so much. Why is the latter so hard? Because many of us grew up in families where the topic was taboo. How many parents sit down with their daughters and say, “Here’s how you ask for good sex…”? If the subject is raised at all, we focus on the risks. So it’s no wonder that many of us form the impression that sex is dirty, men are predators, and women shouldn’t talk about their desires. As adults, we’re expected to be at ease with our needs, when in reality, many women start having sex without fully knowing their anatomy or what feels good to them.

On the surface, it sounds like an easy fix: Simply verbalize your feelings and get what you want in bed. But too many of us hold back for fear of being judged or because we worry we’ll come off as too needy or demanding, which might drive a man away. Yet, you might be surprised to know it’s often just as hard for guys to talk about sex. For them, there’s the added pressure of the societal belief that men are supposed to be all-knowing about sex. If they confess to a lack of expertise, they fear it will make them seem weak. To help you both, here’s a handful of proven tactics to make your carnal communications easier.

Explore What Turns You On Before you can convey your wants, you need to identify them. It may feel a bit odd at first, but ask yourself: What type of kissing or touching do I like? Do I prefer the lights on or off? In the heat of the moment, would I rather feel cherished or ravished? Beyond that, think about what fantasies turn you on or what specific details make you feel more engaged in sex. To help get into the right mind-set, you could light some candles, run a bath, and touch yourself with light strokes— all over—to discover what you respond to. Women often say to me that they avoid telling their partner if something doesn’t feel good and, instead, simply wait for it to be over. But trust me, once you grow more

“Asking for what you want can make you feel vulnerable, but if you make it fun, the pressure falls away.” experiences when they don’t orgasm.) Compliment your partner on the hot things he just did. But also tell him what you like about him as a person, not just in bed. Talking about sex can mean talking about your connection outside the bedroom too.

Talk While You’re Walking

confident in your sexual tastes, letting someone else know what you want won’t feel quite so scary.

Harness the Power of Sexting Sometimes it’s easier to write about sex than to talk about it directly. It could be fun and hot to text your partner about what turns you on, what makes you feel good, and what makes you feel close—even if he’s in the same room. Text him: “It was so sexy when you….” Then say, “Take out your phone—there’s a note from me.” Watch him as he reads your message. If he seems to be squirming,

tell him, “You can write back to me.” That way, he has time to compose his thoughts and reply without feeling put on the spot. Sexting this way ensures that the conversation stays playful, while you both communicate important information to each other.

Turn It Into a Game Asking for what you want can make you feel vulnerable, but if you make it fun, the pressure falls away. Tell your partner, “Let’s play Truth or Dare. We each have five questions.” Use those questions to ask if he likes a certain act or a certain pace,

IL LUST R AT ION BY A LVA RO D OMINGUE Z

and he’ll do the same to you. The dares can be sweet or sexy things you want to do (“I dare you to kiss me the way you want me to kiss you”). You’ll find out where he stands, he’ll get a clearer picture of what you really want in bed, and you’ll avoid the awkwardness of a direct conversation.

Connect When You Feel Closest

Those intimate moments postsex are great for bonding, both sexually and emotionally, because you’ve just released oxytocin so you feel especially connected. (Women release it even during pleasurable sexual

Even for women in longterm relationships, sex talks can be hard! Women tell me they fear their boyfriend might interpret a sudden interest in talking about sex as an indication that he’s been doing something wrong or she’s been unhappy the whole time— when really, her preferences may have just changed a bit, as they do for everyone. Rather than sitting across from each other, start talking while you’re walking or driving and not looking directly at each other. That way, it doesn’t feel like a big confrontation, especially when you use inviting language that frames this as just a conversation, not a performance review. Try: “We talk about everybody else’s sex life, but we don’t talk about our own. Why do you think that is?” Most of all, focus on what you’d like, rather than what he’s not doing right. People love to feel good about themselves, so pump up his ego a bit! If he feels he’s already doing okay, he’ll be more responsive to your needs. ■

Mallory Brown, 30, has always been happiest living out of her backpack. After studying economics and management in college, she took time to trek through Southeast Asia and South America. The more she traveled, the more she wanted to find a way to connect her wanderlust to her skill set. That led her to founding a company that provides clothes to people in need as well as consulting with global charities. “I thought that I could use my training, resources, and access to connect businesses and donors with people who need help,” she says. In January 2015, she traveled to Haiti to deliver clothing to people still affected by the devastating 2010 earthquake. While there, she launched her first “flash fund-raiser”— a campaign in which the goal amount had to be earned in 24 hours and distributed in another day. Brown used the fundraising site CrowdRise to make it happen. The campaign raised $10,954, more than double her goal. The money helped move one displaced family into a new home and enroll the children in schools. That success impressed CrowdRise’s CEO Robert Wolfe, who brought her on board as a partner. MONEY auto-transfer from checking to savings. Or download Digit, an app that notes your spending habits and then siphons small amounts of money into the app’s savings account.

Carry a Savings Charm Ads, e-mail promos, store signs: You’re bombarded by cues to spend but rarely to save. Try creating your own savings prompt. When participants in a Duke University study kept a gold coin as a reminder to save, they put away more than twice as much as those who didn’t. In another study, specific goal reminders (like “$800 for tuition by April”) were twice as effective as generic ones. Carry a written goal in your wallet to keep it in mind.

Pay for Small Stuff in Cash

It’s hard to force yourself to sock away money when it’s much more fun to spend it right friggin now. Train your brain to boost that bank account with these effortless tips. BY K ATE RO CK WO OD

Enlist a Pickpocket If hoarding money feels boring, save it before you see it. Send part of your pay to savings before it hits your checking account, and if possible, ask that half of any raise go to your 401(k). “You won’t feel the loss of a smaller paycheck, because you never had it to begin with,” says Douglas Hough, PhD, an economist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Clear Your Wallet You’re less likely to break a big bill, a study in the Journal of Consumer Research found. Fatten up your savings by feeding leftover singles and $5 bills into a piggy bank each night. Then keep $20s on hand to slow your spending.

Make Shopping Harder Storing your payment info online makes checkout a breeze, which is the problem. “Anything that creates more friction gives you time to second-guess a purchase,” says Grant Donnelly, who researches financial decision making at Harvard Business School. To curb a bad online habit, delete your cards from your favorite sites so you have to type in the numbers manually when you shop.

Lower Those Expectations Falling short of your monthly savings goal? Cut it in half. “People get overly ambitious at the start of the month, then nibble away at their savings and end with nothing,” says Katie Waters, the founder of Stable Waters Financial. Ease up on yourself, then step away from the stash.

6 Sneaky Ways to Save More Cash

Pay with cash and you’ll spend less. Swipe a card and you’ll indulge more. Tap your phone and you may be most likely to go wild. Electronic payments erase the pain of paying, says Dan Ariely, PhD, a professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University. “When we pay with cash, we can see the money leaving and are fully aware that we’ll have less to spend on other things.” Going all-cash might help, but it’s inconvenient. So pay the old-fashioned way when your purchase is less than $20.

The stars leave you short on time but rich in hot, new prospects. SINGLE? With so much going on in your life, you’ll barely have a second to notice who is around. Not for long! May and July could bring you a sweet boy who plans movieworthy moments to remember, and in the fall, someone who appeals to your carnal side might catch your eye. Enjoy the crazy chemistry, but suss out his potential for a serious relationship before going further. COUPLED? Everyone wants a piece of you now. Be sure to give bae a little extra TLC and he’ll return the affection tenfold. March and July are good months for blowthe-budget date nights, so book those impossible-to-get reservations now! Be adventurous together in September. Try a glamping trip for white-water rafting by day and under the stars at night.

GO BIG AND GO BOLD THIS YEAR.… LOVECAST HOTTEST DAY: 0 6 . 01

You are magnetic this year. Indulge in all the admiration! SINGLE? Hallelujah! It is finally raining men. The showers start in April, when a free wheeling dude enters your world and some very hot high jinks ensue. But headsup: His unpredictable nature prolly makes him less of a Mr. Right and more of a Mr. Right Now. All good, because June brings a more mature guy who makes you laugh and think. Traveling together is the true test of how well matched you are, so suggest a fun

weekend getaway, then decide whether or not he’s a keeper. COUPLED? This could be the year you make up your mind to settle down! Keep things hot in February with an impromptu weekend away…or in bed. As long as it involves lots of oneonone time for talking and touching, you’ll both be happy. April might be rocky, but getting through that rough patch will only strengthen your bond. Expect smooth sailing into June and some very romantic nights under the stars.

LIFECAST HAPPIEST DAY: 0 9. 2 2

You’ll feel like a baller at the start of the year, when fortune rains on you with ample opportunities. Get excited, but don’t make a blind cash grab. The decisions you make this year will have a ripple effect on your life for a long time

to come, so consider risks as well as rewards as you research your next steps. Once you decide what’s right, shrug off any naysayers and go for it. Be a bit more impulsive in September as things fall into place at work.

FITCAST POWER DAY: 0 2 . 0 4

Skip the gimmicks and shortcuts, and get real to achieve your fitspo goals this year. Go oldschool with long walks or outdoor runs, swimming, or biking. Slow and steady and you’ll win the fitbod race!

SAFE AND SOUND

You won’t do anything that could turn out badly. Being super careful is smart, but you may be robbing yourself of future growth. Living on the edge, on occasion, prevents you from digging a habitual hole. Break free from your comfort zone once in a while. You just might have fun!

DO YOU TAKE ENOUGH RISKS? a. Assume some froth flew into his eye and it’s irritated. b. Ask him what his fave order is and then gauge the situation.

c. Slip him my number while I slowly lick whipped cream off the rim of my cup.

Sick day! But really, you just have personal stuff to take care of. What are you doing?

144 _ COSMOPOLITAN _ JANUARY 2017

You’ve won an incredible trip to a secluded island. Only thing is, the vacation is just for one. You in? a. File that under no. I can’t just jetset away. What about my cat?! b. Yes! I’ll bring a Z-pak, update all my vaccinations, and carry a flare gun just in case.... c. Duh. Can I be dropped atop a cliff to parachute to my bungalow? Please, say yes.

The side-hustle biz you’re developing isn’t ready to launch, but you hear your arch nemesis has the same idea. Do you release it? a. That makes me uncomfy. If it fails in beta mode, I’ll die of shame. b. Yeah, it makes sense to. I’ll work on the glitches during round two. c. Drop it like it’s hot! Now or never, baby. That’s the motto.

You’re only down to take a leap if you have a firm plan B in place. Preparation is awesome, but always worrying about backup options keeps you from living in the moment. Next time you go to a bonfire, leave the fire-extinguisher at home. Mostly C’s

DANCING WITH DANGER

You’re down for every sitch, always. Risky biz is your style, and IDGAF is tattooed on your ass (a friend did it). But yes-ing it all can take a toll on your relationships, wallet, and energy. Consider the outcome of your choices before making them. Your loved ones and their stress levels will thank you.

I spy, with my little eye, something beginning with “S.” Who knows what you’ll see in the backup camera1 of your new 2017 Corolla, but that’s kind of the point, isn’t it? That’s why it comes standard, along with Toyota Safety Sense™ P.2 Because, even though you might see almost anything, one thing we think you should definitely see is safety. How many things can you spy that start with the letter “S”?
