As the temperature goes up, so does the intake of animals at the Lake Martin Animal Shelter. “We stay full,” LMAS Director Mia Chandler said. “The sad reality isfrom May to September our intake triples. People bring in unwanted litters of animals or bring animals in because they are moving. A pop-up thunderstorm brought high winds and nearly an inch of rain in about 30 minutes across Alexander City Tuesday afternoon. Above, three trees were down near Jefferson on Circle Drive and at right a tree totally blocked Cleveland Street at the Semmes Street end. Trees were down at the middle school, Hillabee Street, Coley, Street and Madison Street. Traffic lights and power were out in some places for more than two hours.

The Students First Act has withstood a challenge to the authority of school boards to promptly discipline employees for violating board policies. In Carrie Cabro Witt v. Decatur City Board of Education, a case involving a teacher charged with having sex with a student, the Alabama Supreme Court ruled unanimously Friday that the school board could proceed with a termination hearing. The employee contended the board could not proceed with her disciplinary hearing because of her constitutional right against selfincrimination since criminal charges stemming from the same conduct were pending. Specifically, the court ruled that the right against self-incrimination will not be threatened if a stay of the termination proceeding is lifted. “Today’s ruling is a victory for Alabama’s local school boards,” See COURT • Page 3

Some might call it a new toy, but for the volunteers of the Daviston Volunteer Fire Department, the new brush truck purchased with a grant from FEMA is very much needed. “We had an old ‘85 model ¾ ton truck that was worn out,” Assistant Chief Ray Story said. “We made do with it for 10 years, but it was broke down a lot.” The new truck will be used to respond as expected to brush fires with its 350-gallon water tank and 100 foot hose reel, but the department is planning to eliminate two vehicles with +

the new brush truck to save money where it can. “We currently have an ambulance that we use for car accidents and such,” Story said. “We will be moving the equipment from that to the new truck. It will help us save on our vehicle insurance. We are trying to cut costs where we can.” The brush truck will respond to brush fires, but it is not the only response to fires that can happen in rural areas with lots of timber and grass. “We’ve seen several brush fires over the last few years,” Story said. “We’ve seen vehicles get stuck and See TRUCK • Page 3
