FROM THE EDITORS We have finally launched the first issue of T@lents Online Magazine after all the hardwork and late nights editing. All of this will not be possible without all the T@lents out there that contributed and keep on supporting us to keep our mission alive.
Initially it was just a thought, a thought that started as a crazy idea because the thought is about a printed magazine. We ask ourselves if we are dreaming too much or what. But last April 1, 2010, we have realized that its not crazy and not just a dream. Because it could happen and it did. With encouragement and the mission to inspire others through this, we have thought to made it online instead and make it possible in a short period.
Thanks for all the support from our friends and contributors who shared about their talents. You are all part of T@lents family. We'd also like to thank everyone who have added us in facebook fan page.
We are waiting for your stories whether it is a short or small story; to us it makes a difference. You can make a difference. We can make a difference and hopefully a better world.
Life Overseas Australia Adrienne Ng DJ Duchess Kay Malaysia
Tell us a bit about yourself... Hey guys, this is DJ Duchess Kay and I'm from Melbourne, Australia. What made you decided to work overseas? I came to Melbourne about 5 years back to further my studies in Accounting & Finance and since young I've always knew that I needed to go overseas if I were to achieve what I wanted in life. So I sort of planned my way and I'm thankful that everything went well. After graduation, I was lucky to have found a full time job, as it was during the financial crisis and I didn't have my permanent residency back then. It was much harder as employers would only employ citizens or permanent residents so I was lucky. I'm still working full time as an accountant during day time. Why did you choose Australia? Well it wasn't really much of a choice actually. It was the most affordable western country that I could go to and it's relatively near. Furthermore, my two elder brothers were here, so it made things easier. I'm glad to have got to where I am now.
How did you get into DJing? It was pretty random. I had coffee with one of my friends one night, and he was telling me that he wanted to get back into DJing, as he's done some online radio DJing before. And I was like, wow that's really cool, being a DJ and all. I then found a niche market for myself. I was always pretty intrigued by being a DJ and I've got a girl friend who picked up DJing as a hobby from her exboyfriend so yeh, I enrolled myself in a course right away and things have been pretty awesome. How long have you been DJing ? Not long ago actually, I started about 6 months ago. I was still in the DJ school then. Before I graduated, I got offered to play in this club for an event so it was about 3 months since I started playing in clubs.
Whats your DJ name and where did the name come from? DJ Duchess Kay. I wanted something posh, unlike the regular street style DJs, so I opted for Duchess. My brother actually suggested it. He was joking about it because one of our dogs name is Duchess, it's pretty hilarious where it came from. But I love it. I felt that DJ Duchess is a little too short, and after doing some research it was a little similar to another artiste's name, so I added a "surname" to it. Who’s your favourite DJ? I totally adore DJ Havana Brown. David Guetta is absolutely fantastic too, and he's gone into the production side, which is great. So does being a female DJ work in your favour? Isn’t there much competition from the men? I think so far it worked in my favour. Music wise, there isn't much differences I reckon, everyone has their own style. If the event organiser or that particular club wants a female DJ, then it worked on my favour. It could be quite daunting working in a field where the majority of the people are men, but it's more challenging and I like to be different.
What do you love most about being a DJ? I get to enjoy and earn money at the same time (laughs). I love to see the crowd filling the dance floor as they danced to my songs. I get adrenaline rushes. It makes me happy when I see others are having a great time. I guess the most important thing is to love what you do.
We heard that you don't smoke and you hate smoking. How do you not get influence when you go clubbing and parties? I guess I've my principles and I stick to it. I actually haven't smoked anything before. Everyone has their preferences, and mine doesn't lie towards that. Clubs in Australia are smoke-free since they started a new rule a few years back, you're only allowed to smoke in designated areas, which is usually the outdoor section or at the balcony.
As a DJ do you get alot of admirers? How do you handle them? Haha I don't think I'm that high up to have that many admirers unless I become a celebrity .
I guess I've many supportive friends which I'm thankful for, and there are always friendly people coming to me and comment that they like my music or my style, which is great. I appreciate all sorts of feedback and I believe they could be used in a constructive manner.
What's your opinion about relationship/marriage? I believe in long-term relationships and marriages. To me, marriage is just a term and bond for longterm partnership. I'd rather say 'Would you marry me?' instead of 'Would you partner with me?'
What was your first record you bought? Hmmm wow that would probably be Spice Girls (laughs). They were my heroes.
What's your favourite song of all time? This is tough, cos I love so many different genres of songs. It probably is Only When I Sleep by The Corrs. This is so not DJ-related (laughs)
So what do you do when you're not DJ'ing?
Chilling and hanging out with my mates, going out to the movies, reading, partying, hitting the beach etc.
Describe your normal day. On weekdays, I'd just go to work and if I'm not heading out with mates then probably just dinner, online or some reading. Every Friday and Saturday my schedule's usually hell packed, and Sunday would be the usual jogging and chores day. I find myself constantly doing stuffs as I've got so much in my hands.
If you could live in any place on earth, where will it be? Beach or Bush? Barcelona, or Los Angeles. I don't mind San Francisco either but I definitely need beaches around. I LOVE beaches and I can't live without them.
What would be your ideal or dream gig? Spinning the decks for a huge festival by the beach, that would be perfect! Sensation would be fabulous too!
What tracks are big on the scene right now? Anything by Lady Gaga is hot, since she's touring Australia now. Bad Romance and Telephone are club hits. Jason Derulo's In My Head, Jay Sean's Down, Kesha's Tik Tok, For House hits, David Guetta & Kid Cudi's Memories is popular, same goes to Richard Vission & Static Revenger's I Like That and LMFAO's I'm in Miami Bitch.
Do you take requests? Yes I do. As a DJ, our job is to please the audience and that includes song requests.
So where can we catch you ripping up the decks? I'm currently working for this event company, and I'm one of the regular rotating DJs for their events, so I play at any venues that they organised. Starting from 28th April onwards, they're gonna have a weekly event at Eurotrash. You could keep track of my upcoming gigs from my facebook fan page or twitter, http://twitter.com/djduchesskay . My website is currently under construction and hopefully it'll be fully functional in a month's time.
Share a secret/Tip for aspiring DJs? What advice would you give to up and coming DJs? Always trust your ears on mixing and do not rely on BPM readings from the machines.
What do you feel are the criteria's one should obtain in order to make it in this business? Networking. I guess this applies to any field but especially in arts and music. And you gotta be a music lover. You have to know your songs well.
If you could change one thing about this world what will it be?Any Words of Wisdom? I wish there would be equality in this world, where everyone gets a fair chance to everything.

I do not want to listen to anyone especially the teachers. They are giving homeworks and expecting me to do the problems on my own. I have never done homework in my life. I go to the bathroom and look in the mirror and say “this is not Micheal Oher."
The blind side is a remarkable story about love that is unconditional and this is based on a true story about Michael Oher and LeighAnne Touhy and her family. Based on the true story of Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy who take in a homeless teenage African-American, Michael "Big Mike" Oher. Michael has no idea who is father is and his mother is a crack head. Michael has had little formal education and few skills to help him learn. Leigh Anne soon takes charge however, as is her nature, ensuring that the young man has every opportunity to succeed. When he expresses an interest in football, she goes all out to help him, including giving the coach a few ideas on how best to use Michael's skills. They not only provide him with a loving home, but hire a tutor to help him improve his grades to the point where he would qualify for an NCAA Division One athletic scholarship. Michael Oher was the first-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in the 2009 NFL draft.

Darwin "Japat" Guevarra Artist Philippines
“The limited space for unlimited dreams”
Please give us your biography, where are you from and how you started in this field? I was born in Taytay province of Rizal, a self-taught artist, graduated from Juan Memorial Junior College. How do I get started? It’s quite hard to describe but since I was young, I am already sketching. Being a serious artist, I’ve been through a lot before I get to know the reason why I am here in the life of an artist. When did you first discover your creative talents? Since I was a child until I developed it by interest to satisfy myself. Seriously I'm looking for the guidance of somebody who knows how to paint or someone who's willing to share his/her knowledge in art and I am very much willing to listen and learn. Is art a very important part of your life? Very important, in my life because it’s of who I am. Not only in my art, have we owed a lot in art. Sometimes or maybe most of the time, you will see my hands dirty or full of paints because of my craft, but always remember, that it’s my way for me to make let you know who I am.
How do you get ideas to create an art? What inspires you? My idea is made out of our happiness, sadness, depression, stress and the success of our lives.
Tender love and care
in one heartender
little flute player
How will you describe your style? My style for my artwork or in painting ,mixed media or to my photography and even to my job as a Visual advertising artist (Production) are almost the same, full of details, full of logic and philosophy, sometimes like a parable. It’s quite hard to explain but I am sure I know what I’m doing. If you see my creation you might admire it maybe, and might say it’s very different, not ordinary. But it's totally a different experience if you see it personally. You will feel that it's like you are talking to my work and it's talking to you too and tell you its own story so you will understand. In the field of mixed media, my art/creation, I not only want you to see just the front of it for everyone who is looking. I want everyone to see and have an interest in all sides of it, side view, top view etc. Then you will see the real story behind it and that's where I really get the real reason for my masterpieces to be meaningful. "In describing Guevarras work, Shaikha Lateefa says: His technique could almost be described as scavenging finding small ordinary everyday objects and literally embedding them within the artwork, giving them a Darwin Guevarra signature touch.
What is the role of the artist in society? To document life from past and present What is your approach to art? Simple in meaning but deep in execution. It’s like when you describe good and bad. Are you ever satisfied with your work? How do you know when you are done? If not, how do you let go of a piece of art? Yes I am satisfied but I am still not finished with my mission. Usually my works are from poems or from real stories; it’s from my own story, story that is currently happening, ideas composed by my imagination. Art work, photography or painting, it will start in my mind and it’s as if already finished there , what I mean is, if I painted it , and if it's already exactly what I want to tell and impart to people then that's it, that's finished, but sometimes when I am done, its more than what I thought it could be.
Any influences or anyone you look up to when it comes to art. Godofredo Godo Zapanta is my mentor. In 1996 my friend Alvin Anchiges whos also an artist introduced him to me. Tatay ( Daddy) Godo is the founder of Group artists of Taytay (Rizal Province). He is a traditional and modern artist. He is also a local and international awardee, have joined several exhibit competitions and a very good leader. He's given advice, told stories or by words. Words that will be the way of logic and commonsense.... help by my humor. Another one is Toti Cerda, he is a water colorist. He is one of those that I really admired and one of the reasons I continue my journey in the field of art. Describe yourself in 5 words. How will I? hahaha crazy artist that's what most people says (majority wins) and Im trying to hide it. Hahaha stubborn, loving, patriotic, poetic, a dreamer.
What moves you most in life, either to inspire or upset you? Can I share my motto. Dream to fly, no matter what directions may require. For in my heart, I am willing to give my last gasp of air for love and the arts. And as long as there remains a glint of color available, how wonderful it is to be alive. But even if a speck of light does not exist, the will continues to survive. What is the most important idea, issue, dilemma or thing that you want to address in your art? ABOUT LIFE ...A SYSTEM OF HUMANITY..FUTURE AND SECURITY. What are your up-to-date art/photography exhibits? Some are under confirmation but and waiting for the final dates of activities. Do you have a website you would like to share? www.darwinguevarra.com www.mokla.multiply.com
Last but not the least , any words of advice for aspiring designers/artists? as a purist : THE WORK WITH FULL OF DEDICATION AND LOVE... BE YOUR SELF...IF YOU NEED TO CRY AND LAUGH BECAUSE OF YOUR COMPOSITION..DO IT DONT BE SHY OR DONT BE AFRAID TO SHOW YOUR FEELINGS......AS AN ARTIST..! ADDITIONAL :-) Short story which is quite long. hehehehe I live with my dreams and grew up living a simple life. I have this thought which was convinced with words as soft as a whisper. Until slowly it became clear with thoughts full of questions. I have a gift that the Lord has given me. I cultivated it and slowly gain courage even though i still have no idea where am i going. Standing innocent before huge and brilliant minds. I put myself in a way I can feel my own perspiration. I eat with my hands and work hard. I dreamt of University and then I realized there are so many opportunities waiting for me. But it seemed to me that I was a failure and I dont deserve all this opportunities. I was belittled and tasted words of criticism. Its more painful if it came from the people that you love. I talked to myself because its a pity if I myself will abandon me. Who else will be with me but me. In my life where uncertainty lies.
“The destination of journey versus The journey of destination”
But no matter where it goes and although it seems to me that I failed repeatedly until to the point that I want to quit. I rest for a while and I begin to work hard again. I work not in a studio of an artist but in a world which is still near Art. Mall decorations and whatever occasions, or whatever things that needs my services as an Advertising and Commercial Artist. There is one night in my life where there is no electricity in our house because we were unable to pay the electric bill, it got disconnected, while I was staring at the electric post, I look around, there are mosquitoes and its very dark and there's a lamp and it's flame looks like a dying patient trying to fight for his life and will be going off soon. I walk around, and I saw the electric post again and I saw someone that's full of cable stuck in his body and wherever my eyes look, even with those clothes with a hanger, I saw this person hanging with the clothes in the clothesline and his stomach full of cable wires and his chest was broken, even in my dream I saw him.
Stand as Human For Humanity
I thought I'd sketch it and tried to join a competition. I started, and I won a honourable mention from Annual Art Association of the Philippines. Even though it's not the main price, at least I started something, and at the same time my style was discovered in water color which they call impressionism. I submitted my work few times to this organization of water colorist, they call themselves Kulay sa Tubig (Color on Water) organized by Gallery Genesis, I didnt pass. They said it's not my work. All the works I submitted to them are alive and looks like a real picture, very detailed but they cannot accept me. Until one night (same night that I saw different things in my mind) I sketched my shadow twice with different angles. The next day I colored it and that's what I brought in the gallery. They told me, this, this is your work, this, It's exactly you. I didn't get it. I went home happy and I still couldn't understand them. Until slowly I understand it. They couldn't see me in my first few works because I did it all to show off, its just creation to impress a normal eye so that it will admire me but not because of my own heart.

Please tell us something about yourself. I learned about beauty when I was 18 years old. I am in the beauty business for 11 years. I never thought of becoming one because I like to be a PR in hospitality/hotel industry. Because of some family limitations I discontinued my studies and learn beauty from my auntie. She always tells me to learn good skills and persuaded me to work for her. When did you start your salon? I started my salon on 2006 because I felt that I gained enough experience and has built enough clients and customers. I am a career woman and it is my priority. Can you tell us and describe to us your job? My job covers facial treatment, consultancy, marketing and permanent make-up. What do you love most about your job? I love to talk to my customers because I once dream to be a PR, talking and socializing is my strength. I feel happy whenever I talk to them because I treat all of them as my friend.
How's your ordinary day? My staff will open the salon. I deal with services at clients place and I also go to other salon to do permanent make-up which is currently my focus right now. How long have you been doing this job? And whats the most memorable experience you have ever had in your career and in life? What did you learn from it? I guess the most unforgettable is when I got scolded by my auntie but I want to focus on happy experiences rather than dwell on the sad ones. I learned in a lot of areas of myself because of my job. Beauty is a very feminine career and ironically I have a strong and tough personality. So I was challenge to be pretty and patient to be one. I enjoy helping customer solve their beauty problem. What inspires you? What drives you? It inspires whenever I see my clients satisfied with my work and became an agent for them to achieve their beauty goals. I feel satisfied and confident and that drives me to carry on and improve my skills even more.
What are the things you should know being a professional that involves beauty? You should have the knowledge and skills. It is very important to have knowledge about beauty, products, and customer service. A good and pleasing personality is a must so that client will trust you. Self confidence is also very important because it helps you to do your task without any hesitation. The willingness to learn and continuous enhancing of skills are important too. Most of all knowing your product and self confidence are the two things you shouldnt take for granted. What do you think about customers? How do you handle difficult customers? You must know your product very well so that you could convince your customers. I would never force anything on my client though. I treat all of them as my friends and in return they took me as their friend as well so this lessens the problem. I will also try the product on myself first before recommending it to my customers because I only want whats best for them. Any challenges that you have face along the way? How did you overcome it? I have one minor challenge or maybe not a challenge at all because I treat it as a learning experience. Its about permanent make -up. It is not quite welcome because people misunderstood the concept of it. They thought it is painful and not natural, but in fact its not painful.
What's the secret to your success? For me the way to success is persistence, focus and good planning. I dont consider myself as successful yet so I cannot tell so much on what is the secret. Whats your dream? My dream is to expand and have my own brand and franchise it overseas. Any tips for those aspiring to be beautician like you? What are the things they should bear in mind? Be persistent, patient, you must be confident about yourself and most of all never give up. Maybe if I am not persistent enough I dont think I will have my salon now. Can you share any words of wisdom that you follow? Beautiful smiles make a beautiful world.

Please tell us something about yourselves. An ordinary girl, with an extraordinary heart inside her. Principle of life: Loving God, Loving people! How long have you been involved with a children home? I've been helping in the Children Home since July 2008. So have been there for almost 2 years. And also, in the end of year 2009, started to be volunteer in disabled home as well. How did you get involved? I've decided to spend some of my time contributing to the society. So i called up the children home and ask them is there any services i can offer for them. Then the person in charge told me that they need tuition teacher to guide the children in their homeworks, because they are really weak in studies. So i just went, and from there, i started my life journey as a volunteer.
What kind and which children home are you helping? The children home which i m helping in now (Rumah Charis), is a home which provides care for orphans and single parent children. The main objective of the homes is to provide a suitable environment for orphans and unprivileged, neglected, single parent children to grow. We help to provide spiritual direction, education, and counseling for the children who are emotionally hurt (based on the bad experience they had encountered in their broken family). Some of their parents are drug addicts, prisoners etc.
While for the Lovely Disabled Home, their aims are to provide handicapped friend a hindrance free workplace, to help handicapped friends to have a healthy life style, to create a love awareness movement so as to get community support and also to train and establish a volunteer work team and together with the handicapped friends to build a caring and supportive community. To help handicapped friends to have a healthy life style ~ To create a love awareness movement so as to get community support ~ To train and establish a volunteer work team and together with the handicapped friends to build a caring and supportive community
Where did you get the passion to help these people? Actually since young, i wanted to visit all these homes and try to bring some happiness and laughters to them, just that it's not easy to take the first step. Until i was being challenged by a Pastor (Pastor Mike Connell) from new york, with his powerful sermon, i have decided to step out from my comfort zone, and offer helping hands for the needy ones. What drives you to serve them? What does it mean to you? In fact, it's not easy to serve the kids from homes. Because most of them are from broken family. Even at their young age, some of them encountered lots of bad experiences during the childhood. So sometimes they are quite rebellious, but actually when you get to know them better, u will know that, they just wanna get your attention, or maybe they are trying to protect themselves from being hurt again. There are times when i feel tired, and wanted to give up. But i always feel there there is a great strength behind me, which is from God. Is His love, which made me hold on, and pull through. Again and again, He lifted me out from disappointment and hopeless moments, and lead me to go even further.
What does charity mean to you? Well, as for me....charity means to offer helping hands to those needy ones in our society, and bring hope, joys\, laughter and happiness into their life. Who knows, with your little action, might have a great impact in their life. What's your dream? My friend (who is also a volunteer) and I, we shared the same dream and the same passion. We want to own a children home in future. Why do you have this kind of dream? And what inspires you? Because i really love kids. And Pastor Mike Connell said: God will turn ur bad experience into a great testimonial. In fact, myself is from a single family. In the process of growing up, I also felt lack of security because of the lack of love from my dad. So i can understand their needs better than the people who came from a complete family. I hope that i can take good care of them, not as a person in charge of the home, but to love them, with the love as a mother. I wanted to build a home, which is not only providing shelter and food to them, but also to help them to build good character . We are not going to build a house for them to stay , but a home, which is known as a "family". Teach them how to love one another as themselves. I want them to grow up, knowing that I will always be there for them. Whenever they face any problems, they always have a home to seek for love. What do you think is the most important thing in life? For me, LOVE is the most important things in life. It's not easy to love someone, unconditionally, sacrificially, and whole-heartedly. and only LOVE, can change the impossible into POSSIBLE!
What can you tell to those people in the orphanage who already have lost their faith, who thinks that they have no chance in life? How can you inspire them? Instead of telling them a word of encouragement, i will tell them my life testimonial. Share with them what i have gone through, and let them know that even thought they are unfortunate, they can still be a blessing to other people. And most importantly, help them to re-build their faith and confidence, encourage them to try again even though they might have failed before. I believe, when you care about them, they will feel that they are being treasured. They will know that someone actually love them, they are not unwanted child. Whenever there is love, there is hope! What do you think does a better world means? A better world means, the society is full of love and care. Just to share a short story: Before i joined the disabled home, i didnt know that, disabled people are facing so many inconveniences in their daily life. Even though it's only a simple action for us, such as going to washroom is so inconvenient for them. They need to spent alot of time, and waste lots of energy in order for them to do such a simple action which we are doing everyday. Going to cinema for a movie, can only happens once in a blue moon. So after joining, i realized that, sometimes by just offering them a little help, will help them to save lots of energy, and make things easier for them. Would like to encourage everyone, to offer a little help, but will bring them a great convenience. A better world means, the society is full of love and care. Do you believe that anybody could help? Of course! Everyone can help, as long as u are ready to stretch out your helping hands!
How can other people reach out if they want to? Does the home yo are helping have a website or any contact numbers for those interested to help? Rumah Charis ( Old Folks Home and Children Home) website: www.rumahcharis.org.my Lovely Disabled Home website: www.lovelydisabledhome.com At the end of the day what kind of feeling do you have after helping them? What's your last words? Well, everyone must be thinking, being a volunteer must be a great blessing to other people. In fact, i am the one who received the greatest blessings in return. Especially when i was being pampered by the old people from old folks home. They really love me whole heartedly and treated me super nice. Just like my own grandparents, they care for me a lot. Sometimes it really made me feel so touched, and feel that i can do even more for them. And in the journey of being a volunteer, my capacity has been enlarged, as i have helped out a lot being a committee organizing events for the homes. I gained a lot of valuable experiences, and myself has grown a lot during this journey. And when i see them smiling happily, i know it is worth for me to invest my time in them. I really hope that more and more people will join our team, as volunteers are always needed. You might be thinking, if you join us, you will not make a great difference for the society. But i can assure you, with your helping hands, we will be albe to contribute more to the needy ones. Come and join us today!
The Invitation by Oriah It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing. It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love for your dream for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon... I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow if you have been opened by lifes betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain. I want to know if you can sit with pain mine or your own without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it. I want to know if you can be with joy mine or your own if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful to be realistic to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself. If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty every day. And if you can source your own life from its presence.
I want to know if you can live with failure yours and mine and still stand at the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, Yes!.
It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done to feed the children.
It doesn't interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.
