n today’s world of computers, cellphones, multi-tasking and fast-moving technology we have lost sight of the one core element of success and that is perseverance.

Perseverance is the power key to success.

It’s also the ability to keep on keeping on. Even though our efforts are met with great stumbling blocks, such as failure, disappointment and, overall, brick walls that keep appearing before us in our quest to be successful, is truly a great characteristic.

This ability can make all the difference in the world when it comes to being successful.

Being committed to your goal and believing in yourself, and in your goal’s possibility, will help you achieve greatness through perseverance. It also borrows strength from resilience and optimism and brushes elbows with courage along the way.

If you listen to anyone who has reached a significant goal, you’ll hear a story about someone who had to overcome setback after setback along the way.

There’s a lot to be said about setbacks, since it’s a learning tool and should be treated that way and not succumb to them as a failure.

Whether you’re working to master a skill that will qualify you for the next step up in your profession, or taking on tasks to further your personal goals, your success often hinges on your ability to refocus on your goal again and again. To give it one more tries, and then another, and still another, is to walk the path that leads to achievement.

There are many benefits to perseverance, other than helping you master a skill or reach your personal goals. The ability to keep on keeping on will reflect on you in other ways, as well.

It makes you trustworthy in other people’s eyes. They know you’re a diehard and won’t quit at the drop of a hat.

It will also increase your sense of selfworth, when you reach your goal. Your commitment to your goal will heighten your motivation and it will also lead you to new discoveries and help to expand your knowledge.

Perseverance is strength onto itself, and some people naturally possess more of it than others do. But everybody can build his or her perseverance muscles. As with all of our character strengths, attention to it and practise will take you a long way.

In closing, I must say that having a positive mental attitude can make a huge difference when delving into any project or trying to reach a goal and honing your perseverance.

D

uncan Cameron never intended to become a solo musician.

As he says, “It’s certainly not a profession that any high school guidance counsellor recommended.” But his career has been one of following his own choices; playing to his own tune, as it were.

His musical journey began with his father, Stewart Cameron. Born in Scotland, Duncan grew up in Canada in the 1960s, “When it was actually cool to sing folksongs.” He believes the timing of this was the generation’s draw towards anything counter-culture, but additionally, the quality of the music being offered.

“A popular saying among traditional musicians,” says Duncan, “is folk music isn’t good because it’s old. It’s old because it’s good.”

Performing this type of music requires a partnership between audience and musician, and that is not always on offer. Fortunately, for the Cameron family, Toronto was home to The Fiddler’s Green Folk Club. “My parents took me and my sister, Moira, there every week,” says Duncan. “There we heard Louis Killen, Norman Kennedy, John Roberts and Tony Baron, The Boys of the Lough, and many others.”

These performances influenced the family greatly. They rarely missed a show, often recorded them for later listening, and began to perform.

As well as the traditional music of Scotland and Ireland, Duncan was also influenced by the heritage of his mother, Dianne. “My grandmother was French and from Quebec, although she never spoke it at home. My mother heard traditional songs in small communities in northern Ontario, where she had grown up.”

They saw many French bands play and Duncan found their infectious enthusiasm enthralling. “These groups excited me, not just because they sang in French, but more because they had such joy in their playing. The constant rhythm of their feet and the playful call and response singing delighted me.”

Though his interest in music has never faltered, his early attention to lessons did. He couldn’t enjoy such strict playing techniques, leaving no room for self-expression, and soon found himself, like his sister, learning to sing and tell stories.

“On hiking and canoeing trips, long drives or just doing dishes, we often took turns ‘shortening the road’ with my father taking the lead,” says Duncan.

In 1983, the family moved from Toronto to Greater Sudbury when Dianne was offered a teaching position at Cambrian College. Though the move was challenging for all, Greater Sudbury soon felt like home.

Within a year or two, Duncan’s dad, Stewart, had taken to performing in schools and became artistic director of the Northern Lights Festival Boreal — he even had his own cable TV show.

As well, the family hosted monthly ceilidhs (musical parties), often held at the Cameron home, where people were encouraged to sing their songs and tell

their stories.

“The move to Greater Sudbury was, I think, pivotal for my sister and me. Had we not moved, perhaps we would have taken our rich foundation in folk music, storytelling and mummer’s plays for granted,” says Duncan.

The family began performing at folk and storytelling festivals, Christmas concerts and ceilidhs. It was at one of these performances that a family friend and performer gave Duncan his first violin.

“To be given a microphone was such a privilege; it was an unspoken agreement that for the next few minutes, my sense of humour, the tunes in my head, the hours of practise that I had invested, the sadness I felt for imagined characters … everything I expressed would be heard,” says Duncan.

In the late 1980s, things began to change for the Cameron family. As Moira moved to university, Duncan began singing more. “One day at home, my father overheard me singing to myself The Sheffield Apprentice. He seemed genuinely impressed and told me that I was singing it really well, which I knew was high praise.”

Neither of them knew then that a year or two later, it would be the last song Stewart ever sang, from his hospital bed. After a long battle with cancer, Stewart succumbed to the illness and died in 1989. Duncan was 15 at the time.

In 1992, he moved to Ottawa and began to attend sessions for the first time. He says, “To the uninitiated, seswww.talentnorth.ca

sions may seem like jamming, but they are actually more like sharing baseball card collections; enthusiasts of Celtic instrumental music (Irish fiddlers, for example) work much more on memorized repertoire than on improvisation.”

Not only did he feel welcome, but challenged by their excellent musicianship.

He ended up back in Greater Sudbury, but brought those lessons with him. He began teaching and played with several local musicians, including Friends of Erin and Kevin Closs.

Of course, the music industry and its trends had a surprise in store for Duncan. As he moved to Toronto to join a band called Enter the Haggis, a surge in the popularity of Celtic music began.

“To my amazement, Ashley MacIsaac and Great Big Sea were getting folk music played on mainstream radio.

Suddenly everyone knew what Riverdance was. Irish pubs were opening up in every neighbourhood, and many of them wanted live music,” says Duncan.

He began to get solo work and in 1998, he was hired to be a part of the cast of Needfire, at the Princess of Wales Theatre. He joined celebrated Canadian Celtic musicians and learned greatly from the professional atmosphere. It inspired him to form The Duncan Cameron Band.

He began feverishly composing, using whichever instrument he felt suited the music, and though he usually composed alone, he found collaborating with band members very helpful. In 2000, he released his first solo work, The Whistling Thief.

Promoting it proved difficult, as it was mostly played in pubs, and Duncan had to constantly fight to be heard.

Fortunately, he sent of copy of the CD to Pierre Schryer, a friend he met while in Ottawa. He was offered a spot to tour with Pierre. In 2003, together they released Blue Drag, and were nominated for a Juno award.

He continued to perform with Pierre, as well several other bands, such as Tamarack and international company Drayton Entertainment before finding a home with band Fig for A Kiss. In 2006, they released Fallen Leaf, and were nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award.

In 2009, Cameron decided to head to Newfoundland. He found it hard to book shows and was wondering what to do next when he was asked to perform with The Irish Descendants.

In 2012, Duncan recorded a tribute to his father — an album of songs he loved to sing, the way he sang them — unaccompanied.

“Maybe the loss of our father made

us always remember that songs could be lost, too, if we didn’t sing them,” says Duncan.

However, Duncan missed his family. “My mother, living in Greater Sudbury, had some health issues, and I hadn’t seen her very much over the past few years. So, when I got asked to join Drayton Entertainment for another theatre production in 2013, I accepted, and moved back.”

In 2015, Cameron dedicated himself to his music once again.

“I decided to work with two classical musicians and an Irish musician: Brittany Goldsborough and Jane Russell (both played with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra), and Pat McGuire (who had played with me in The Friends of Erin). We called the band Fagroongala.”

The band plays at The Speakeasy and Fionn MacCool’s, and is planning a St. Patrick’s Day Show at the Sudbury Theatre Centre.

Authentic Mexican food La Casa Mexicana Jenny Lamothe Talent North writer

S

ilvia Rios, owner of La Casa Mexicana restaurant, had more than just a language barrier when she wanted to open a restaurant in Greater Sudbury.

She had a spice barrier.

She came from a restaurant family in Acapulco, Mexico. She had a great amount of experience, and talent, in cooking the traditional food of her home country.

Every time she mentioned it to someone, they would immediately dissuaded her.

“I ask why, they say because Mexican food is very hot.”

So, she started small, with a stall at the Greater Sudbury’s Market Square.

“When I started at the market, I didn’t even mention jalapenos,” says Silvia.

Coming to this country 22 years ago, after meeting her Canadian husband in Acapulco, was quite an adjustment for Silvia. Leaving her family, and trading the country’s wonderful warm climate for Canada’s winter, Silvia had a great deal to overcome; the most difficult obstacle would be learning to speak English. Thankfully, she found help at the Church of the Epiphany.

“When I came to Canada, I took English as second language, which took me about five to six years. When I came here, I didn’t have any knowledge about the language.”

She worked very hard to master English, then began to focus on her next goal. While donating her services to local charities and festivals; coming up with ideas for her market stall; and having children, Silvia also found time to go back to school. She graduated from Cambrian College’s chef training program, with the Premier’s Award in hand.

Though she had nightmares she would be shunned for her spicy foods, the real-

ity was quite different.

“When I opened, I was so nervous. I had this guy — I wish I could see him because he was my first customer, I think he was between 55-65 — and he said, ‘What are you selling young lady?’ I said fajita and burrito. He says ‘What is that?’ ” She was very specific with the ingredients and processes, and made sure to make it as relatable as possible. He ordered one, and went to his table.

“I served it to the table and my heart (she laughs and beats her hand quickly over her heart), the way you serve your food, I was learning in school, the first impression is everything,” she says. “So then, the guys says, ‘Can I have another one? And give me two more to go.’ I was so relieved.”

With the market being such a success, Silvia later opened her downtown location on Elgin Street, with a special sign that read “This food can be mild, medium or hot.”

The restaurant fully opened Greater Sudbury’s eyes to the magic of Mexican cuisine, and in 2006, she opened a

second location at 1142 Lasalle Blvd.

Next up for Silvia and La Casa Mexicana is a menu update. Though it already features a wide selection for vegans, vegetarians and those with gluten allergies, Silvia intends to increase this offering, as well as adding homemade tortillas, and a mini-cantina for children to enjoy and prepare their own tortillas.

Though her early adventures here were challenging, Silvia is very happy to call Greater Sudbury home.

She consistently helps with charity events and local fundraisers, offering the restaurant and her great foods. She donates what she can to her community, and it is in gratitude.

“I want to thank the people of Greater Sudbury for their hospitality and their support. Sometimes maybe my mind could be in other places, but my heart is always in Greater Sudbury. It’s my town, and I feel very proud to be here,” says Silvia.

Trevor TenHave using his creativity to make a living Jenny Lamothe Talent North writer

T

here are many things to love passionately in childhood, which tend to fall by the wayside as age creeps in: Trying to find a path; to find a career; to become more grown up. For so many, this means giving up something they love, in the belief they need to act a certain way, do a certain job, in order to be successful.

This almost happened to sculptor Trevor TenHave. He could have just left the art he fell in love with when he was young. Thankfully, he didn’t, and is now headed towards his biggest, most successful year yet.

“I have always been a creative person, art was always my favourite subject. I love drawing, especially creatures, monsters and anything in the realm of sci-fi and fantasy,” says Trevor.

“I played with Play-Doh and plasticine as a child, but I got my first in-depth experience with sculpture in high school.”

His first real attempt at sculpturing happened in 2003, as part of his art class. Each student was given the opportunity to create a sculpture and have it kiln fired. In the two weeks available, most students completed one sculpture, one student completed two, and Trevor, well, he did seven.

“And even painted a few of them,” he says.

After that experience, lacking space and needing to navigate life as an adult, Trevor decided to put his work aside for

a while. He moved to Greater Sudbury, from his hometown of Thunder Bay, when his girlfriend, Michelle, was accepted to Cambrian College.

“I did not want to be without her and I had yet to find my calling. I was curious what Greater Sudbury had to offer; we relocated here and we have never regretted that decision.”

In 2010, the two married in Thunder Bay surrounded by friends and family, and in 2013, they bought a home in Greater Sudbury. With the newfound space, and a desire to create once again, Trevor began to do what he loves best.

“The same month we moved in, I already bought a big box of clay and decided to get back to my artwork. I also started doing charcoal portraits and dabbled in a couple different art mediums.”

In 2014, Trevor made an important decision; he was going to find a way to use his creativity to make a living. He began with an opportunity with Black Rectangle Brand Inc., a northern Ontario film production company, which specializes in conceptually dark narratives with a sci-fi/horror setting. He is now a prop fabricator and movie set builder.

“I’ve had the chance to work on quite a few film projects here in Greater Sudbury,” he says. “And I would love to design/build movie monsters. I plan to continue working in local film and performing arts while using my down time to create my own brand of 3D-character art.”

When he is working on a new piece, Trevor finds inspiration in many places, including: “Iconic characters/creatures/ monsters in film, Greek mythology, video games, novels and comic books. I always examine the features I love about certain characters and let that influence my work.” He then has to determine the size of the piece, as well as whether it will be one-of-a kind, and then chooses his tools and materials.

“My favourite clay to work with is oilbased clay. It holds incredible detail and doesn’t always need an internal frame to support it, depending on the complexity of the shape. But oil-based clay is only a modelling material, it needs to be moulded and casted to create a finished product.

“The time it takes for me to complete a sculpture is always different. It depends on the medium, size, if it’s a finalized design or if I’m just making it up as I go along, but it would not be out of ordinary to spend 100 hours on a 10-inch tall character sculpt,” says Trevor.

Thanks to his leap to move forward with is craft, 2016 is going to hold great things for Trevor.

“I have been asked to be a featured artist at two events: The first being Graphic-Con, which will take place in June at the Sudbury Community Arena, and the other for Northern Game Expo in October. I will be releasing original character resin statues and model kits throughout the year and I also have plans to hold beginner level sculpting workshops.”

Choosing fun over fear Stephanie Piche

T

he power of social media can be scary.

Someone can post a photo and caption from a two-year-old article and it can be shared around the world and back in a matter of hours — without a handful of people actually reading the article.

The country of Mexico has been fraught with controversy, rumours and media attention over the last several years. Some has been for the dangerous events in border towns and gang-ridden territories — and most recently, the Zika virus is its newest foe.

But that doesn’t mean that Mexico isn’t a beautiful country.

Mexico is a country full of ancient history, rich culture and a spice for life.

There will always be stories and warnings in the media, which is a good thing.

It keeps us informed so we can take the necessary precautions and enjoy safe travels.

Vacations are a much-needed break for our health and happiness. It allows us the opportunity to reconnect with our loved ones, friends and even just to ourselves.

Introductions to other cultures and the people who live within their boundaries allow us to glimpse another way of life and open our minds to new things, new

14

flavours and new people.

Travel is now becoming more of a necessity in the lives of many, instead of an occasional luxury.

Once you catch the travel bug, it is hard to look back. Very quickly, your days following your return home are filled with making plans for your next trip — even if it is for a few days or within a few hours drive.

This is the traditionally busiest month for winter vacations — for the students’ March Break — or for anyone to just get away from the cold and snow that have blanketed all us of late.

Mexico is still a highly sought after destination for its intense heat, spectacular beaches and overall slower pace.

There are hundreds of Mexican resorts to choose from, but the Mayan Riviera and its surrounding towns is still the destination of choice for most travellers.

I will be visiting Excellence Riviera Cancun this April and plan to come home with interviews with some local residents and some authentic recipes to share.

In the meantime, enjoy this little taste of Mexico to add some sunny flavours to your palate — and to warm up that barbecue for the coming spring.

Quick beef fajitas with guacamole and chile cream Makes four servings 4 beef tenderloin steaks, room temperature 1 red bell pepper, sliced into strips 1/2 onion, roughly chopped, sauteed until golden brown 8 oz sliced bell peppers (mix of colours), sauteed 2 tsp chili powder 1 cup sour cream 1 cup of your favourite salsa, for serving 1 cup guacamole (recipe below) 8 large tortillas Guacamole: 2 avocado, lightly mashed 2 limes, juiced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp fresh coriander, chopped salt and pepper olive oil, as needed Prepare guacamole: Put ingredients in a blender, except olive oil. Drizzle in olive oil until a thick paste is formed. Spoon into a serving dish and refrigerate until needed.

Season the steaks well with salt and pepper and grill the steaks on high until they are cooked to medium or mediumrare.

Meanwhile, stir chili powder into sour cream and put in a serving dish.

Transfer sauteed peppers and onions into their own serving dishes and keep warm in a low oven until the steaks are ready. Allow to sit for 10-15 minutes and then slice into strips.

Warm tortillas and place everything on the table for your guests to serve themselves, including guacamole and salsa.

Tia Kontoniemi is a typical 15 year old with all sorts of aspirations for her future. Whether it’s personally, scholastically or in the performing arts, Tia is pursuing all avenues to help her achieve her best options for the future.

At a young age, Tia’s father passed away, but as a result, she began to have an interest in singing and the first song she tried her vocals on was Daddy’s Hands.

Her mother saw that Tia’s interests and talent were headed towards the performing arts, so she enrolled Tia in classes at charm plus, which would help define Tia’s self-awareness and poise.

At the age of nine, Tia was a pleasant

child with a sweet conservative nature.

The first challenge I introduced her to, outside of her classes at charm plus, was the Italian Festival pageant and then the Faces of the North Talent contest.

These types of events can only enhance the self-esteem and wellbeing for future endeavours of any individual.

Tia was awarded the Top Talent award and performed the night of the Faces of the North event. I will never forget, as she began to sing, the gasp of awe in the audience at her strong voice. For such a conservative young child, she could now strike up a conversation with all ages and sing on any stage with confidence.

Since then, Tia has been in many contests, as well as winning awards at Cafe-musique and Kiwanis festivals.

She has also been in some Theatre Cambrian plays, such as Les Miserables, Shrek and Sound of Music.

She has modelled in fashion shows; loves working out with weights; enjoys animals, especially cats; and taking photos of nature.

Tia is presently taking dance and opera-vocal lessons. I would say Tia is following her passions.

Local singer chases his country music dream Michelle TenHave Talent North writer

T

he north continues to prove that there is a large amount of talent growing in the region and country music just added a new star to watch for — born right in our own backyard.

Born in Elliot Lake, now living in Greater Sudbury, Mike Trudell, has been working on his country career for the past four years and is on the path to big plans for 2016.

Prior to Mike entering the music industry, he worked as a paramedic before realizing that his true calling was to make music.

He took the leap to leave his full-time job to pursue his music career, after people discovered his talent of singing and playing several types of instruments, to compliment his songs.

After losing his mother, who passed away 12 years ago, he kept her spirit with him by staying true to his dreams.

“She was always my biggest supporter in everything I did,” says Mike.

While it can be easy to get caught up in the limelight, he strives to remain the same person — grounded by continuing to be a regular guy to everyone he meets.

“I’m a northern boy. I like to fish, hunt, ride dirt bikes and just hang out,” says Mike, when asked what he does for fun when not making music. He also contributes much of his spare time to his six-year-old blind shepherd/lab cross puppy.

When he’s writing music, he gets the inspiration from real-life experiences and positive influences, which he turns into meaningful songs.

With two singles off his self-titled CD on the rise, Do You Wanna and Blue Jean Girl, both singles have gained the

attention of listeners of local radio station KIXC, as well Barrie.

Mike holds the title of the five-time winner and retired champion of the New Music Challenge at KICX 106, in Barrie, and three-time winner of the New Artist Challenge at KICX 91.7, in Greater Sudbury.

He’s been the opening act for some popular country artists, such as George Canyon, Josh Turner and Brett Kissel and has even played with Tim McGraw’s band. Some of his previous shows included playing at the Calgary Stampede and at the Manitoulin Countryfest. He has also been showcased during Canadian Country Music Week in Edmonton and Halifax.

Besides staying true to his northern roots, Mike is constantly looking for ways to keep his music playing in the

north. Expanding his fan base through his online presence, confirming new shows and recording new music are among some of the new things you can expect from Mike and his team in 2016.

“We’re getting ready to record my first music video for my next single, Runaway Highway,” says Mike. He goes on to explain that he gives much thanks to management team, Janice Starodub and Anya Wilson, his publicity and promotions team.

When asked who influences him, Mike says, “People who struggle and continue to keep going. Letting nothing stop you from reaching what you want.”

Stuntmen Steve Gagne and James Eddy Michelle TenHave Talent North writer

W

hile watching a movie or a show on TV, we focus on the people who are on screen and less time on those behind it, because we don’t see them.

We do know the people behind the cameras may actually have a harder job than those in front of it.

Local stunt performers, Steve Gagne, left, and James Eddy, right, have been working in the industry as stuntmen for several years and I had the amazing opportunity to sit down with them and learn about the profession, how they got started and who they are.

When asked why they chose to be stunt performers to further pursue as a career, Steve says, “Being a ninja seemed cool.”

“I wanted to be a superhero, but when I realized I didn’t have superpowers, this was the next best thing,” James says.

Being the only two stunt performers in the north, both Steve and James have developed quite the profile as the go-to guys when it comes to the stunt performing.

The two travel as far as southern Ontario when an opportunity becomes available, but it didn’t come easy or fast to either of them.

“It took me 15 years to get one call,” says Steve and continues to speak about the steps required to take to get known. “Those connections that you develop with people in the industry can help you develop a profile.”

Besides their backgrounds in martial arts, they say being in good physical shape is important for injury prevention, flexibility and co-ordination. They both agree that trust is an important piece to how they will perform in the scene.

“The stunt co-ordinator teaches you the process of agility, provides mentorship and makes you feel safe,” says Steve about providing safety and confidence.

James agrees.

They go on to explain about the projects they’ve been able to be part of, since taking their passion into a career.

Steve, once a business owner of a martial arts company and James, a for-

mer teacher, now can allocate their full attention to building their profile in the entertainment industry.

Both of them have a role in latest Fox TV series, Damien, which films in Toronto and features several up-andcoming actors. Steve scored as the stunt double for the lead character.

Recently, Steve played the role of lead stuntman in Pay the Ghost, starring Nicholas Cage. James starred in Ford Mustang Limitless series and has starred in the Masked Saint.

As stunt performers, they explain that hardest part of their jobs are trying to mimic the actors movement to “eliminate the obvious.”

“Studying the actor’s movement must be seamless to the audience. We’re all there to make the movie the best,” says James.

“Fear is focus,” says Steve when asked how they stay in focus, despite the fear associated with some of the stunts during a role.

“Knowing how to fall and learning as you go into training, you need to keep focused,” James says.

Since both have stayed close to the north, with recent roles, their future plans consist of travelling, being in more feature films and eventually becoming stunt co-ordinators to mentor and aid others to further their careers and safety.

“We’d love to do a fire burn in the future,” says James. A fire burn is being lit on fire, which seems dangerous, but with the right clothing, equipment and training — it could be a total game changer for their careers.

ired of snow and cold? If winter seems long, remember: Spring officially begins Sunday, March 20.

However, unlike our Pacific province cousins, there will be no outdoor gardening here for some time yet.

This doesn’t mean you cannot plan, organize, and maybe even dream. It is said that seed catalogues are like rays of hope in the darkest days of winter.

March 6 is the date for the muchanticipated kick-off to cultivation: Seedy Sunday. The annual seed swap and sale takes place from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Parkside Centre, 140 Durham St. “Seedy events are organized by communities that see a need for backyard gardeners, market gardeners, seed savers and seed growers, to learn about and exchange seeds,” says Colleen Zilio, a board member with the charity Seeds of Diversity Canada.

“Most importantly, they provide our community with an opportunity to distribute locally-adapted, open-pollinated seeds. This means farmers and gardeners in our area can grow these vegetables, herbs and grains and save the seeds and to grow and share the next year,” says Colleen.

For example, in 2014, Seeds of Diversity Canada adopted an “endangered” tomato called, funnily enough, Bear Claw. While it obtained only a few seeds that year, they have gone on to grow out this tasty variety, which can now be found in several Greater Sudbury community gardens.

The diversity of plants is very important. With enough variation in a group, there will always be some plants that can survive under any changing situation. Food crop biodiversity is our single most crucial tool to adapt our food systems to changes. To learn more about

Seedy Sunday Sudbury includes knowledgeable guest speakers, vendors, not-for-profit exhibitors, and activities for children. There are also workshops, informal sharing, and always an overall enthusiasm.

I had a chance to speak with Hermina Smatlanek Hubert, one of the organizers of Seedy Sunday Sudbury.

Is Greater Sudbury a hotbed of interest in gardening?

When I view all the colourful front yards as I drive through the neighbourhoods, I see that there is a great deal of interest in gardening in the Greater Sudbury area. The Sudbury Horticultural Society, Master Gardeners and the City of Greater Sudbury are all important participants. Their effort is evident. Even the downtown businesses are beautifying its storefronts with raised flowerbeds and planters.

People are likely asking, “Seedy Sunday? What’s that?”

This is an event that promotes the saving and swapping of seeds from our own gardens. It also gives us the opportunity to buy heirloom (heritage) seeds, which haven’t been genetically modified.

How many years has this been taking place in Greater Sudbury?

This is our sixth year. Since 2013, it has grown into quite a successful event, showcasing something new each year.

The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security has been generous in contributing to our speakers’ corner in previous years.

What goes on at this event?

Aside from our guest speakers throughout the day, you can visit the exhibitors, vendors and

the Seedy Cafe (new this year). You can buy soil, starter kits, rain barrels and special light systems, too. You can also vote for and support a seed variety that is in danger through the Adopt-a-Seed program. Aside from seeds, you can also buy honey, jams, alpaca products and crafty things, to name a few.

How many people usually turn out?

I believe we had about 600 to 700 in 2015.

Why early March?

It gives folks a chance to start some plants indoors, which needs extra time to mature, such as tomatoes, cucumber and squash. And let’s face it, after a dark, cold winter, everyone is anxious to attend a free activity that reminds us that spring is not that far away.

When do you start planning this event?

We actually already have potential speakers for the 2017 event. The committee has a bit of a break during summer, but planning does take several months.

Getting more laughs Greater Sudbury comedian Phil Rawson working on second season of Ontario Laughs Leslie McDermid Talent North writer

W

hen I was asked to write about funny-guy Phil Rawson, I did what most people do when they want to find something out — I Googled him.

I quickly found a YouTube video with one of his early shows and decided to ask him about it.

I read a story about how you got your start by booking a room in a restaurant you worked at, can you tell me about that?

Yeah, I wanted to try stand-up and was talking to a co-worker about it, and they said, ‘Well, then do it.’ So I booked a room in the restaurant and invited family and friends. The first few shows were — interesting. It was a good way to start, though.

I found a video of you and you were talking about police.

I wish that video wasn’t online. That’s one of my earliest shows. I definitely don’t use any of the jokes that I first started with.

Did you love doing stand-up right from the start?

Yeah, I loved it. So I did another one, and now I’ve done shows in Toronto, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay, all over Ontario.

My favourite spot is still Little Montreal. The audience has been built up from 2009 to now, with some good regulars.

Toronto is nice, it’s a different crowd and different shows.

What are you currently working on?

We’re currently filming the second season of Ontario Laughs and it will air in fall. (Ontario Laughs is a television show that showcases Canada’s brightest and best comedians, as they perform in Ontario.)

Do you have any tips for someone who wants to get started in stand-up?

Your first show will go great, because you’ve had your whole life to write jokes for it. After that, it gets a lot harder, because you need to write new stuff.

Just keep going, push through the first year. Once you hit your third or fourth year, you really find out who you are.

What is one thing that fans wouldn’t know about you?

Probably that I’m also a real estate agent. Things might get a little weird knowing that I have professional side.

March is National Music Therapy Awareness Month

M

usic reaches deeper within us than even words. It may be more powerful than images, as it taps and bares lost memories, which can stir the soul across the full spectrum of sadness to unbridled joy.

Instruments, the human voice, the melody of a chickadee all touch our spirits, emotions and remembrances.

Not all agree on bagpipes, but drums, electric guitars or harps all seem to have their links to life stages and psyche.

Music therapy certainly seems to be valuable for those who have had a stroke; trauma or stress, such as acquired brain injury (ABI), through a car accident, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); experiencing Alzheimer’s; have autism spectrum disorder (ASD); or are in palliative care. From pediatrics to improving quality of life for older adults, music therapy can play an important role in health wellness.

I had the delightful opportunity to speak with Kylie Klym, local music therapy practitioner and owner of Kadence Music Therapy.

How did you become a music therapist?

It was singing, in church, which initiated my path to this profession.

I had an awareness of a desire to have a career in the healthcare field, but wanted to do something different.

Sensory-friendly concert: April 9, St. Peter’s United Church I should clarify; I am actually an accredited music therapist. I have a bachelor’s degree and have been certified by the Canadian Association for Music Therapy. That means I was in Windsor for four years studying and learning the craft. My cohort had 18 students and our curriculum included physiology, nursing, psychology and social work. As a bridge between theory and practice, I even took a conducting course.

I design programs, using musical interventions, for all ages and abilities. It could be lead and follow, which helps focus and attention, or it could involve much more complex tasks.

Specifically, how does music therapy help clients?

Music therapy can help with socialization, recall, and academic skills, with cognition, attentiveness and so much more.

It is a non-invasive treatment and is a well researched evidence-based practice with many peer-reviewed scientific journals that document the value.

In the one-on-one level, you especially see the benefits of the potential it brings.

It can improve communication — even for those who are non-verbal — restores mental health, or is therapeutic for seniors in dementia care. I am not a teacher, nor a performer, but these are all part of the job.

What does your typical day look like?

I rarely have the same day twice. I often make house calls. I travel to homes, because I feel it is important to connect with people in the place they are most comfortable in.

Frequently, I am also at Pioneer Manor or other long-term care facilities. Community organizations, such as Alzheimer’s and Independent Living, book me.

Initially, a coalition of groups employed me. Private clients and organizational work mean quite a blend for my company. Kadence Music Therapy is proud to be serving all citizens across the City of Greater Sudbury.

Sessions can be anytime, even-early Saturday mornings or over lunch. I work

closely with families to accommodate their schedule. I often bring small percussion instruments and visits could be one-on-one, small group for some, or for a larger group.

I understand you are considering a studio.

Yes, in this non-stop busy year I have thought a central location could be a valuable component; I vision an openconcept space, with easy access, and filled with movable soft furniture.

I recently embraced the idea that I am a business owner, and have been fortunate to be mentored by Peter Dal Bianco, mentor and CEO of Bianco’s Management Consulting Group.

Through the Entrepreneurship 101 program at NORCAT, I see new opportunities and want to grow my practice and nurture success.

March is Music Therapy Month is something special planned?

The Silver Birch Quartet and Kadence are collaborating together a new venture for both of us. We have actually selected not March, but April 9 for a sensoryfriendly concert, which will be held at St Peter’s United Church, 203 York St. This opens an imaginative world, to both performers and audience, as it is being created with a view of engaging young children, and specifically families with a child having ASD. The project has been in discussion for two-and-a-half years; some ideas are

still in development. Movement with fabric (scarves) is not an exact departure from concert norms, but we will remove a lot of seating to create extra space for inspired movement. Low lighting and soft soundscapes will make it welcoming, informal and the participatory activity will be under an hour.

My role will include assisting children attended. With free parking, and likely a pay-what-you-can entry, we want it to be barrier free.

This concert is part of your commitment to community wellbeing.

I have become strongly connected to Greater Sudbury. I do love northern Ontario; it is home. I made it all the way to Dallas and came back.

I’m 26, was born in the north, and I finished high school (Lasalle) here in Greater Sudbury. I’ve lived in Thunder Bay, too. I did one practicum and an internship here, as well. I guess I am a well-rounded northern Ontario girl.

I know that music is vital and I am now in my fourth year of volunteering with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra in the box office. I sit on the Cultural Action Committee, too. Recently, I made a drum under the guidance of a First Nations elder. Greater Sudbury is a busy place, rich in a diversity of culture and events. It is a great place to call home.

Enjoying his musical journey

I

f you want to make it as a band, you start playing in bars. That’s where everyone goes to see live music. Of course, when you’re 14 and your band plays a bar, you’re going to see some interesting things, too.

Stray Bullet, one of the early bands of Steve Costello’s career, was playing, when a very intoxicated woman took on another, very large, bar patron.

“We saw a big biker guy get hit over the back with a chair by a small drunk lady,” says Steve. “We learned then and there that you never stop playing no matter what happens.”

Often, the band members would sit at a Tim Hortons across the street from a bar they would soon be playing — only allowed to enter when it was their turn to perform. But the inconvenience was no trouble for them, says Steve.

“We didn’t care, we just wanted to play. We learned a lot about how to play live and how to deal with people on and off stage, a lot of life lessons.”

They are lessons he continues to use to this day, as he moves through Canada and the United States collaborating with other artists, writing his own material, and acting as a “guitar for hire.”

In 2006, there was Stray Bullet, and then 2009 brought Shop Naked. In 2010, Steve, with Mayday Mother, released a seven-song EP produced by Superstack Music.

In 2013, he released his own solo album, Steve Costello, Vol. 1. As described by one reviewer: “The entire album is kick-ass rock ’n’ roll!”

Not a bad musical resume for someone so young.

Especially when you add the Whiskey Rocks Showdown Competition, a 2013 contest that brought Steve and his band the chance to open for Theory of a Deadman, and introduced Steve to manager Robert Knight, a man he admits “changed my life forever.”

The contest, sponsored by the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA), is a fan-driven competition that takes place at the London Music Hall in London, ON. “My bass player at the time, Kevin Barbe, suggested we send in our music video for my song, Lie Machine, to Whisky Rocks, so we did. Then we sort of forgot about it after a while and didn’t think we would make it through,” says Steve.

“My solo record had just come out, we had never performed the new songs live. I had never sung a note in front of anyone, but the engineer, Dajaun Martineau, and we hadn’t rehearsed at all — basically the band wasn’t ready yet.

“Then we got a call four days before the finals saying that we had made it in to the top three. We promptly agreed to drive to London for the show and started practising three songs like crazy until we had it down,” says Steve.

“It was a crazy experience and we’re honoured to have been chosen as the winners. It has given the project credibility and has helped to show that we mean business.”

With the confidence that comes from earning your way into the game, Steve took the win as a sign to keep going.

Now 24, Steve is performing across the United States as a solo artist under his own name, and with many others.

“I’ve been travelling and writing with some new friends I’ve made in the U.S.

Mainly, I’ve been songwriting with: Elijah Wood (not the actor), a friend of mine for years, who just came off Shania Twain’s Rock this Country tour, as her new drummer; Amanda Hardy, a wonderfully talented singer/guitarist from Seattle, who has such amazing power and soul in her voice and as a songwriter; Carmine Rojas, bass player for David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Stevie Wonder, Joe Bonamassa and countless others.”

The group met while recording three new demos for Steve’s solo project, “But I think there may be some other incarnation here, so I’m down here (in the U.S.) seeing it through.”

Though he is far from home, and misses his family greatly, Steve is really enjoying his musical journey. “I love seeing new cities, trying new food, meeting people and playing in front of new audiences — I think it’s the greatest way to see the world.”

Though he has been in bands since

the age of 14, Steve still recognizes, like any great musician, that there is always much to learn.

“I’ve been working on and recording a lot of new material for another album, but I don’t have a release date in mind,” he says. “I’m trying to really get the most out of writing with others and learning as much as I can in the meantime.”

Team Brunton’s hard work paying off

T

he Sudbury Curling Club has been a big part of Greater Sudbury since 1892. For the past 120 years, the club has offered curling for all ages and levels.

It’s not only home to more than 300 members, but it’s also the home of northern Ontario’s junior women’s curling team, known as Team Brunton.

The team members include: Mikaela Cheslock (second), Kira Brunton (skip), Kate Sherry (vice), Emma Johnson (lead), and coaches Chris Johnson and Frank Brunton.

Kira says she was put into curling at the age of five, by her father and grandfather. She plans to make curling her future career. By the looks of this team, the Sudbury Curling Club’s tradition of producing excellent curlers will continue.

The Sudbury Curling Club has been very supportive of Team Brunton. The team meets at the club five days a week to practise, and their hard work is paying off.

Mikaela says, “It’s really exciting to be on Team Brunton, because we are all best friends and really good curlers. It’s enjoyable to be out there with them.”

Team Brunton’s first major victory was at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, BC., where they beat team Nova Scotia 6-5, and took home the gold medal. They also won the 2016

Best Western NOCA Junior Women’s Bonspiel back in January, defeating the Burns Rink 8-4, in an intense match.

This win qualified the team for the 2016 Canadian Junior Women’s Curling Championship in Stratford, ON. Even though they lost in Stratford, they didn’t let it dampen their spirits.

“We were really excited, because it was the first time we represented northern Ontario and it was nice to have the opportunity,” says Kira.

With more than 15 years of coaching experience, Chris Johnson has been the team’s coach for the past four years, and is really impressed by how far the players have come.

“They are a strong and aggressive team. The girls are always willing to learn and accept instruction. The possibility for the girls to get a spot on the Canadian Olympic curling team is definitely in store for the future,” says Chris.

“Every year has been a constant improvement for the team. We don’t go in with any major expectations, and we

take each competition with one rock, one end and one game at a time.”

The girls enjoy both Chris and Frank Brunton as their coaches, because they are always learning something new from them.

Team Brunton has high hopes they will have a solid performance when they compete at the Optimist U18 International Curling Championships in Edmonton, from March 3 to April 3. They will not only take on Canadian teams, but teams from the United States and Japan, as well.

“I love curling with my best friends, making curling a career would be amazing. I am going to strive towards my curling goals and work hard,” says Emma.

Playing the pipes Jenny Lamothe Talent North writer

T

he Laurentian Pipe Band is truly a family affair that began, of all places, at The Big Dipper, an ice cream shop hosting its grand opening.

There was a pipe band playing and Ray Young, who came to Canada from Scotland in 1954, wanted to show his children, Derek, David and Dan, their musical heritage. When the show finished, Ray approached the leader, and — wouldn’t you know it — they knew each other.

As Derek Young puts it, “The following Saturday we started going to band practice Saturday mornings at Charlie Kennedy’s house.”

The brothers were very inspired by the music they began to learn, and played in bands in the Greater Sudbury and North Bay area, before brother David — at the time a music student at Laurentian University — had the idea to create a new pipe band.

“My brother had this idea of starting a pipe band at the university because, often times, they would hire pipe bands to do their convocation ceremonies and stuff like that,” says Derek, pipe major.

“With David’s background in music, and our interest in pipe bands he was like, ‘Why don’t we have a pipe band on campus?’ So, he put together the proposal and submitted it to Dr. Woodsworth.”

Judith Woodsworth, president of Laurentian University at the time, approved the idea and, after further approvals from executive and senate committees, the Laurentian Pipe Band was formed.

After a first performance for a Robbie Burns (Scottish poet) dinner, wearing hand-me-down kilts, the band would have its first performance at the Laurentian convocation ceremonies in spring of 2007. This time, however, there was custom fitted uniforms with a custom designed tartan.

The Laurentian Pipe Band perform at many events, such as the Massey Fair Parade. At one of the events, members got to meet Michaelle Jean, when she was governor general.

The tartan is registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority and designed with the university in mind. It is inspired by the family crest of the Ramsey’s, the lake the university is situated on, and features the official Laurentian colours (blue and gold.) It also features shades of green to align with the university’s brand: Learning: It’s in our nature.

But don’t think the band is purely for those involved with the university.

They are a proud community band, and even offer lessons to share their loves of music.

“We are willing to train new pipers of all ages, and of all skill sets and they don’t necessarily have to be associated with the university,” says Derek.

Not only will the band provide the instrument (for a small materials fee), but also the lessons are free of charge.

They practise Sunday nights at the Laurentian School of Education, and Derek mentions not just the enjoyment of the instrument, but the experiences playing with the band could offer.

“You’re getting friendship and comradery. One of the major selling features is events, like convocation, which is always a fun event. You get to meet some really interesting people. Through our band experiences, we’ve met personally

with Michaelle Jean, when she was governor general; we’ve met with former prime minister Jean Chretien; we did the Massey Fair parade and Jack Layton was the grand marshal for the parade that year.” They also meet and perform for those given honorary doctorates, like David Suzuki and Sue Johanson.

And don’t think that playing in a pipe band will be traditional. They have partnered with musician, Andy Lowe, and added pipes to his original northern Ontario folklore music, and are looking to increase the diversity of what they are playing.

“Last summer, our family was at the Fergus Scottish Festival and one of the bands that headlined was from Scotland called, The Red Hot Chili Pipers. It was four bagpipers, with a full back line and they were doing top 40 rocks — from Queen through to modern pop. So, when you see that kind of diversity, you know what is possible,” says Derek.

Greater Sudbury’s first

poet laureate Roger Nash’s drive is to entertain an audience Jennifer Lacelle Talent North writer

A

boy runs throughout scattered ruins in Egypt, while his imagination brings them to life; haikus are written carefully on eggshells destined to rest in the refrigerator. The creativity of author Roger Nash has stayed with him throughout his life.

Roger spent his childhood living in various parts of world. His father, Lawrence, who was in the air force, helped build airstrips after the Second World War. Roger spent time in Egypt, Singapore and China.

Growing up, Roger discovered he was good at telling stories by creating and narrating them to his brother, Tim. He recalls being awake late at night telling stories to his sibling to help him quiet down. He would use a finger puppet to help act out the tale.

Roger says he didn’t necessarily write his work on paper, at least, not at first.

He says poetry is about telling a story, which is what he always did. His drive is to entertain an audience. That’s part of the high of what he does.

He says another amazing feeling is when the words simply come to him and all of sudden they’re written down.

“In a matter of minutes, you’ve got words on a page,” Roger says. “It’s a high when it just beams down.”

Although having been a storyteller for most of his life, he didn’t pursue publishing until his 30s. He says he spoke to a published poet, Al Purdy, who told him not to worry about rejection slips. Roger noted that Al told of his own rejection letters and how they were now used as “wallpaper” for his kitchen.

Having that tidbit of information gave Roger the courage to send his own work

to publishing companies.

His first book, Settlement in a School of Whales,, was published in 1983; he was in his early 40s. Roger’s latest book, Upsidoon (pronounced upside down), was published in 2014. His next book is expected this September. It will be his 17th book overall, but his ninth book of poetry.

The tentative title is Zigzags.

He says the theme is about trying to find a way through life, but we’re walking in zigzag patterns to get through it.

He says that despite walking through contradictions and paradoxes we still manage to get ahead and move along.

His books range from fiction to philosophy to poetry. Chuckling, Roger says that he sometimes looks at his books and exclaims, “I didn’t know I knew so many words.”

He immigrated to Canada in 1965, for further education. He came to Greater Sudbury a year later, where he worked for Thorneloe University for a year.

He says he found Greater Sudbury had

a very strange beauty to it. The rocks, he says, seemed to have a life to them. He notes that his children played on them and pretended they were real whales.

While he’s mostly lived in Greater Sudbury, since he immigrated, he has moved away a few times, but always found himself returning.

Roger says the citizens of Greater Sudbury are warm-hearted.

With his life always being surrounded by various cultures, he says that Greater Sudbury’s multi-culturalism also drew him to the mining city. According to Roger, Sudburians are good at accepting people from places other than Canada, making note of our Bridge of Nations.

He also mentioned Greater Sudbury’s Canada Day event, where one can “Eat your way around the world.”

“I’m Canadian,” Roger says. “I’ve still got a funny accent, though.”

Roger has served as president of the League of Canadian Poets. During this time, he worked hard alongside senator Jerry Grafstein, to create the position of parliamentary poet laureate. From 2009 to 2011, he served as Greater Sudbury’s own poet laureate; the city’s first.

Roger notes that Greater Sudbury is full of skilled and artistic people. He also says that if a person wants to write then they should go for it. The same with any other creative form.

“Who’s stopping you?” He asks rhetorically. “You never know what you’re capable of until you try it. You don’t have to be an expert. The true kind of ‘making it’ is making good stuff.”

Springtime in Downtown Sudbury, located at the intersection of Junction and Nolan Creek, was a bad time for floods.

In the early 1900s, flooding was so common that some residents took to travelling the streets by canoe and boat.

During the annual flooding event, Charlie Taylor was Fishing for Dollars on Elm Street, in a canoe that came from Horne’s Hardware.

The first telephone in Sudbury was installed at the Balmoral Hotel in 1899. The phone connected with the power house on David Street for emergency fire calls. By 1902, Bell Telephone purchased the local telephone franchise and started with a switchboard serving 25 subscribers.

The Sudbury Brewing and Malting Company on Lorne Street, was established in 1907. Over the years, it has gone under the name of Doran’s Northern Breweries and Northern Breweries.

During prohibition in 1917, a soft drink operation was installed in the brewery to keep the staff employed and plants maintained.
