WELCOME

INSIDE OUT

artsNK - Experience Great Art WELCOME: Ending the Year on a High The Zygote Festival was certainly one to remember, but artsNK staff have been busy in other areas too. Read about the Zygote legacy with forthcoming aerial skills development; the wonderful mosaic creators of Sleaford; the landscape art commission which will produce a memorable piece of public art; professional involvement in dance for young people, and a photographic insight into the ‘glorious game’! Further details about the work of artsNK can be found at: www.artsnk.org

INSIDE OUT: Our Story from Anne Willoughby and Pauline Dobson When the idea of a mosaic to grace the front and inside of the new Sleaford Leisure Centre was conceived, the obvious way forward consisted of two steps: firstly to commission mosaic master, Alan Potter (see Sept/Oct issue), to create the mosaic and the second, to enlist the help of members of Washingborough Mosaic Group, whose members not only had years of experience in creating community mosaics, but who have also worked with Alan before. For the Sleaford Leisure Centre Project, Anne Willoughby and Margaret Carter from the Washingborough Group were only too ready to lend a hand. Anne talked to me about the process involved: “Alan begins by designing the mosaic and then laying out the design on boards. Members of the community are then invited to add pieces of the mosaic in order to create the final piece. At the beginning, it can seem a little strange, because the mosaic has to be created back to front, but it soon starts to take shape.” I asked Anne how members of the Sleaford community responded to the opportunity to get involved. “I was amazed at how many people came along. There must have been hundreds, quite a few of them children, who all wanted to take part in this.” As an ex primary school teacher, Pauline Dobson has been used to being hands-on throughout her professional life, and, having been extensively involved in the Footprints project, Pauline was keen to participate in the creation of the mosaic:

“It was a wonderful experience! It was so good to have the ladies from the Washingborough Mosaic Group to guide and advise, and I loved seeing members of the public come into the shop where we were working and add to the mosaic piece by piece. Sometimes, members of the local community would come in with their own stories of the Leisure Centre and its role in the town and these stories are fascinating. In fact it’s given us ideas for other projects which we might be able to undertake!” Pauline confirms that the bug has bitten! “We are now putting our heads together to think about how we might continue to develop the skills we’ve learned, and contribute further to the creative life of our community here in Sleaford.” Read the full interview at: www.artsnk.org/taking-part/inside-out-our-story-from-anne-willoughby-and-pauline-dobson

MAKING YOUR LANDMARK

HIGH AIMS

HIP HOP, SKIP AND JUMP

artsNK - Experience Great Art MAKING YOUR LANDMARK! Eco 2 Commission

Sculptor Michael Condron has been selected from five shortlisted artists to undertake a new commission in partnership with Eco 2 in Sleaford. Michael, who describes his principal aim as ‘to make artwork that belongs to its place’, works in metal and focuses on landmark specific site sculpture. Michael will be offering some workshop opportunities alongside his commission, so keep an eye on the artsNK website for an opportunity to work with him. For more detail about this project, visit: www.artsnk.org/taking-part/making-your-landmark-eco-2-commission

HIGH AIMS! Developing aerial activities

In order to create a legacy from the aerial spectacle at the Zygote Festival, the dance team has acquired its own aerial rig and equipment, which means that new activities can be developed. The long term goal is to create sustainable classes, invite schools and community groups into the space, develop a performance group of young people as well as adults and commission aerial artists to visit us in the county. The dance team members continue their training on the equipment, and hope to add other types of aerial activities such as Chinese pole, Spanish web and trapeze. To read more about this development, visit: www.artsnk.org/taking-part/high-aims-developing-aerial-activities

HIP HOP, SKIP AND JUMP: Dance Residencies artsNK’s Youth Dance Company, kNacKer’d, and Street Dance Company, redXco, worked with professionals over October half term on two separate dance pieces, which will be performed at the U.Dance County Platform – True Motion. Working with projection, kNacKer’d started the research process for a new piece based on the play Ghost Town, whilst redXco worked on House, Hip Hop and Locking foundation styles within the Hip Hop genre. Professionals from Blue Print Design and Blue Boy Entertainment worked with the young dancers. To read the full story of the residencies, visit:

CONTACTS

artsNK - Experience Great Art BEHIND THE GOAL: Full Frame Photo Project

Chris Vaughan, a professional sports photographer who has been working with artsNK Photography Development Officer Jane Harrison, has created an exhibition of Lincoln City football club which shows the club from an intimate perspective. These images will also be exhibited from November through the Full Frame public gallery: Frames in Public Places. A practical workshop and a talk by Chris form part of his commission. ZYGOTE: Bursting into life! Puffs of flame shooting 15 feet into the air; an aerial artist suspended on silks; Navigation House brought to life; an ethereal performance of dancers in St Denys church; metal trees; this and so much more brought delight to 3000 visitors to Sleaford town centre on a rather chilly Sunday evening in October as the artsNK Zygote Festival unfolded to an enthusiastic reception by an enthralled public! Months of careful preparation by artists, school students and artsNK has resulted in one of artsNK’s finest Festivals yet.
