Birdhouse Jammy Voo “I took off my hat and put it in the cage, and I left with a bird on my head” Jacques Prevert

A Curious Evening of Trance and Rap Trifle Gathering Productions Is there anybody not quite there? The hilarious Trifle Gathering will have you in stitches, performing as the celebrated Ogden Sisters, three truth seeking explorers delving into the fascinating world of mediums and the origins of the spiritualist movement. Travelling back in time to a darkened room set in 1892, hand picked brave observers will dress in Victorian bonnets or facial hair and join the world famous Ogden Sisters at their table as they present the marvellous, the mysterious and the spiritually peculiar. Drawing together clowning, choreography, magic, animation and deeply tragic comical characters, this show is absurd and inspired, with a wild yet poignant story.

On their maiden voyage to Somerset, Cornish based company Trifle Gathering have taken this show to dozens of village halls across the UK, leaving audiences reeling with laughter and wonderment. “Fantastically funny and surreally absurd from start to finish. Go see and prepare to fall in love.” Western Morning News www.triflegatheringproductions.co.uk DATES AND DETAILS Weds 10 Oct | 7:30pm | Charlton Adam Community Centre | £8 | 01458 850451 Weds 17 Oct | 7:30pm | Goathurst Village Hall |

This latest production from the wonderfully anarchic Jammy Voo is inspired by Hitchcock’s chilling classic 1960s horror The Birds, told through a theatrical lens of dark clowning (the stories you don’t tell your children at night), enthralling puppetry and an original live music score. Four very funny women, survivors of the ‘bird apocalypse’ treat us to their surreal and ever so slightly mad world of comedy horror. Birdhouse has a fantastic creative team, it was developed by Jos Houben (Theatre de Complicite), Peta Lily and Omar Elerian, with gorgeous live music by Greg Hall. Take Art are big supporters of Jammy Voo and we are very exciting to see this freaky fantastic piece arrive in Somerset.

Osiligi Maasai Warriors Music and dance from the other side of the world The Osiligi Maasai Warriors make a trip to Somerset from Kenya to present a very special concert, featuring authentic music, song and ‘jumping’ dance, as well as fascinating information about their life, culture and village communities. This incredible musical foray is followed by a Q&A session, awakening hearts and cultural curiosity and adding a lively and interesting end to the evening. The show will delight all ages from 5-95 and is presented in two halves, with the interval providing a rare opportunity for the group to chat with audience members and sell authentic beadwork made by their families. All proceeds from the show will go to help the warriors’ families in Kenya and towards the improvement of their village back home.

Whose Story is it Anyway? Kepow Theatre

Seven Ages Kepow Theatre

Improvised comedy theatre for kids

A comedy for all the ages

Whose Story is it Anyway? is a comedy theatre show celebrating the power of the imagination, guaranteed to make children (and adults) fall about laughing. Starring Kevin Tomlinson and Abi Hood (The Bill, ITV), Kepow take suggestions from their young audience and adapt well-known stories and improvise live scenes.

Following a sell out world tour to Canada, US, New Zealand and Hong Kong, Kepow Theatre present an ideal show for all ages, exploring the seven stages of life as proffered by Shakespeare, the world’s most famous ever bard.

Kepow are one of the UK’s funniest, most creative theatre companies, who have created this improvised theatre show suitable for 5-11 yr olds and playful grown-ups.

Essentially a comedy, with touching moments, Seven Ages premiered at the Edinburgh Festival 2010 and earned 5 star reviews, had a sell-out run and then transferred to London’s West End. Kepow are often said to be the funniest theatre company on the rural touring circuit.

Frankland & Sons

What’s On

What’s On

A true story about parents, children and falling in love Created by three generations of the same family, Frankland & Sons is a playful, moving and surprising tale of love won, love lost, and wholly inappropriate girlfriends. When theatre-maker Tom Frankland’s aunt died in 2006, he and his father inherited suitcases full of forgotten letters, written by his grandparents over the course of twenty-five years. Letters revealing the astonishing life and loves of a couple that lived through two world wars and a recession. Frankland & Sons is a personal performance that contains sketches, skeletons, readings and conversation, drawing on Tom and John’s ‘Pythonesque’ sense of humour, as both father and son delve into their family history and get more than they bargained for.

One Darke Night o-region A jaw-droppingly brilliant celebration of Nick Darke’s writing and life After a sell out tour in 2011, o-region is back with their hit show One Darke Night, based on the work of renowned Cornish playwright Nick Darke. The show features a selection of extracts spanning the entirety of Darke’s career, from firm audience favourites The King of Prussia and The Body to his lesser-known works, including radio plays, diaries, letters and commentaries. Using simple staging and projected film, One Darke Night showcases Nick’s exquisite talent for crafting blistering dialogue, quirky characterisation and beautiful prose.

Combining a cast of versatile performers, many of whom you might know from wonderful Cornish companies Kneehigh and Miracle, One Darke Night is a terrific show. A must see for anyone with an interest in writing, writers and the passion that drives them.

Created and performed by double Fringe First (Edinburgh) award winner Tom and his dad John Frankland, the show is directed by another Fringe First award winner Jamie Wood. “A fragile, endearing family drama. A peculiarly affecting production” Donald Hutera, The Times

Charles Dickens Pip Utton A masterful performance, Pip Utton IS Charles Dickens Charles Dickens, the great English novelist, the most famous man of his generation, staggers on to the stage, clutches his chest, slips from his sister in law’s arms and falls down dead. Seconds later he leaps up to entertain his audience – his ‘circle of affectionate friends’. With his death got out of the way right at the start, he feels that he can now approach the rest of the evening with energy and enthusiasm. This is not the dark, grave and serious Dickens of myth but a

man full of energy, passion and fire. At the end of the evening you will have been richly entertained and feel as if you have actually spent time with Charles Dickens. “Real emotional tangibility in the performance and the feeling that I have now met with Dickens, I would recommend this outstanding piece of theatre to anyone” Fringereview.com www.pip-utton.com

The Three Billy Pigs Noisy Oyster

Carolling and Crumpets John Kirkpatrick

Once upon a time there were three little pigs...

The bizarre rituals found in the folk music of England at Midwinter

The Three Billy Pigs is a new family theatre show from Noisy Oyster for children of three years and over. The show blends two classic fairy tales The Three Little Pigs and The Three Billy Goats Gruff with beautifully crafted puppets, light hearted story telling, live music and a little bit of eco-awareness in pig stylie.

John Kirkpatrick takes a profound look at the powerful pagan urges that race through us at this time of year. He peels away the modern soppy and sentimental view of Christmas to reveal the life and death struggle symbolised in so many traditional songs and customs, all dressed up in the glittering finery of toe tapping tunes and cracking choruses.

Performer Sarah Rowland-Barker had a background in classical dance before moving into street theatre and circus with No Fit State. Nik Palmer is an award winning puppeteer and musician and the son of Ray & Joan DaSilva who founded the wonderful Norwich Puppet Theatre. Based in Frome, Noisy Oyster are definitely one of our favourite local puppet theatre companies. www.noisyoyster.co.uk

Adolf by Pip Utton Thursday 13 September @ Tacchi-Morris Art Centre the Fuhrer, stands before a huge Nazi banner addressing his party faithful. The 20th Century’s most notorious tyrant is daringly brought to the stage in one of the most successful and powerful solo works ever presented. Written and performed by Pip Utton, directed by Guy Masterson.

Adolf is live theatre at its best with a theme and subject that is powerful, challenging and divisive, illustrative and educational. It is utterly provocative and totally necessary. Dance in Schools – Somerset Take Art Dance have been successful in gaining a small amount of funding to start to help support, develop and sustain Dance in schools across Somerset. The Dance in Schools project will support non-specialist & specialist teachers with tailored training and Professional Development. It will encourage shared practice between schools and will work with Primary, Secondary, FE, Special Schools and PRUs. Katey Leader, Take Art’s CoDirector in Dance, who has a specific focus on Children and Young People, will lead the project.

Somerset Youth Dance Company – AUDITION Somerset Youth Dance Company (SYDC) is auditioning to find new young dancers who show potential, passion and talent in Dance. SYDC develop young dancers through regular contemporary technique classes, working intensively with professional dancers and choreographers. The company rehearse at The Octagon Theatre in Yeovil on a Tuesday & East Bridgwater School in Bridgwater on a Thursday and successful applicants only have to attend one session a week. Intensive rehearsals run in the school holidays. The company has been established for over two years and past SYDC members are now studying at The Laban Centre, Northern School of Contemporary Dance and Dance Universities.

AUDITION DETAILS This year we are holding two auditions for 14-21 yr olds. You may attend either audition and you do not need to prepare anything. Both auditions will consist of a contemporary technique class, a street dance phrase and work with a choreographer. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring water to drink.

One participant said, “This event was brilliant. I took my son and his three dancing friends and they loved it. They came home and spent a few days mixing their own music and making up a dance, including the sequence they learnt in the Flawless workshop and entered their school talent show. They got to the final and had to perform in front of the whole school. Thanks for organising the day. It was excellent”.
