Kyoto Institute of Technology Makoto Takei Studio 2017 ‘Creation from small module’ Instructor : Makoto Takei (TNA), Structure Instructor : Yasutaka Konishi Duration : 7weeks Loction : Funaokayama, Kyoto Main Use : Library

Library in a forest

This project is a library in north part of Kyoto. I proposed two world with different charactors for reading place, the one semms like extension of the forest, and the space seems lightairy landscape where even people seems like a part of it, the other seems like a cave in the ground or hideaway to the site surrounded by rich beautiful nature.

These spaces are basicaly one-room composed by only the special structure which looks like the cross shaped column branched and curveed like arch. Moreover, people can feel the difference by going up and down the hole which is to connect them sectionally. The arch touch the roof with the minimum area, such as curve and tangent line, not to feel the gravity of the roof. Also there is no vertical element on the upper floor with the same reason.

Instead of design a building, I tried to design abstruct space or environment itself.

The structure of the upper floor is simply truss. in the semi-underground floor, nomal piller bear the vertical stress, and short pillers which are put surrounding ground bear the horizontal stress. Thus, there is no wall for bearing from stress.

Wakakusa-chaya 若草茶屋

Shimizu corporation Competition ‘Chill in Nara’ Instructor :Duration : 4 weeks Loction : Wakakusayama, Nara Main Use : Complex Work with : Mitsuru Ogaki, Jumpei Kasai

Wakakusa-chaya

This project is to design complex building which contains hotel, gallery for folk handicrafts and art, and resting area for climber located on the top of the mountain in Nara city. This is located in the middle of the driveway between city and countryside. Thus,it programatically seems like platform which contains places to appeal about countryside and also to make up for lack of accommodations in the city in Nara.

This architecture is composed by two differnt elements, one is“Mass”made by stone wall which is common material around the site, the other is “reamined space”from the site. The gallery and hotel are in the mass and scattered on the groundlevel. Thus the flow lines are hidden under the ground. THe resting area is composed by the remains the site curved by the mass. The space is continueing from the mountain, and articulated by the mass The roofs divided as small scale are on the frame which put into the stone wall like earthfast.

I proposed architectural composition/how it stands for relatively huge building with complexed programs by using the way that the independent programs/fanctions affect each other by their walls or connect in the sections.

The site is located by the western building made of brick, which used to be a customhouse, in the center of Bangkok. The customhouse was built in 18th century and need to preserve as an important building in the history. It is going to convert to museum in the future. Thus, this is in the part of the project and going to be the extension of it.

The surrounding buildings are various types, for example, huge tower, traditonal house, customhouse, and so on. Therefore I proposed to mediate surrounding scale, shape and condition with this architecture.

Firatly, I divided the volume to small one, then each of them connects with “chan which is traditional architectural element in Thailand. Each volume was curved the same window as customhouse, and shaved by the incline of side volumes, such as engaging each other, to make semi-outside space. I proposed that the elevation looks like scattered and belong with next buildingw from distant view, on the toher hand, from close view it makes people feel sense of unity with small scale.

Kindai University Masaki Nitta Studio 2016 ‘Conversion project of Nara Juvenile Prison’ Instructor : Masaki Nitta Duration : 15weeks Loction : Narashi, Nara Main Use : Museum and Artist in residence

Drift between new and old

This project is conversion prison to art museum and historical archive. Nara Juvenile Prison which is going to close as a prison before long. is located in Nara, Japan It was built in 1908, built by blicks which is not common material in Japanese archicture. In addiction, it is a great morden architecture, and well-known as one of the few architecture which is adopted panopticon, w h i c h i s s u i t a b l e shape for surveillance in prison.

Existing plan The office and wathchintower are located in the center, and camps are atatched around them. the basement floor is used for strage. They have B1+2F and are made bricks.

Proposal diagram This is a diagram to show the composition of my proposal. I drew a lines connecting the prison and where well known as important place for 3 cultural period (Asuka, Tenpyo, Hakuho) on the map of Nara, and overlayed it on the lines of camps in the prison. I proposed to convert the camps to archives of each culture, and add extention between camps to creat flow line and spaces to exhibit new art. So the sequence become repeat between strong contrast, which is new art and old(histrical) archive as the program, and also between thin light metal (extention) and thick heavy bricks(existiing) as the material.

Design exercise Ⅳ ‘New type of office building’

オフィスの中の街

Instructor : Akira Sakamoto Duration : 15weeks Loction : Minami-Horie, Osaka Main Use : Office

49

Design exercise â…Ł

This project area is in Minami-Horie, Osaka. They remain some old townscapes, which used to thrive as a city of furniture, in the northwest side of the site, therefore, the scales of the buildings are still small and there are quiet, calm atmosphere, despite standing in the central of Osaka. On the othere hand, there is a Yotsubashi line on the east and so many buildings. Yet, the rate of vacancy in rental office in this area marked much higher than any other part in Japan. On this site, I propose a complex Office building which has Public open space.

50

City in the Office

The surrounding townscape has uneveness with next buildings. I was interested in the context of this site, thus I had researched how Minami-Horie had created.I thought it could be a part of my concept. This is the research of how the uneveness appeared on the facade.

fig.11How Minami-Horie had created

This is a diagram which represent the uneveness of the city and how it is used by colour. It shows that the uneveness is used as buffer zone between city and indivisual buildings. It seems like a blank space of the building and people use it as they want. It is a kind of the charactor of this

buildings is difficult to take natural sunlight, however, because of the distance from road and srounding buildings, naturally the privacy is protectedand, moreover the site becomes quiet. I dicided to build the house with four-floor in ten-meter in spite of being surrounded by buildings with three-floor. Due to it, the ceiling height on each floor become lower than if it is three-floor building, but instead, I reduced are of each floor and build up with shifting, thereby not feeling tite. In addicion, it is able to take sunlight in variety way and creat a close connection between upper and lower floors. It provides a seamless atomosphere, which is not devided by the floor in general small house, feeling of the sense of unity.

Also it was required to make it symbol of the island which does not only in terms of appearance, but also in terms of spiritual meaning for people in the island. Looking back to the history there, temple and shrine used to be anchorage in the island. In the temple, Engawa, which is typical type of terrace in Japanaese buildings, was making relations

with inside and outside, in addition, there are several scenes with Engawa. Inside the temple, it is composed by huge roof with Wagoya structure, which is traditional type of structure, therefore it has human-scale.

Looking on the site, it is surrounded by event space, levee, harbor (these three are in front of there), path which has typical character in the island, and shrine (these two are in the back), therefore, those

Oshima Hut makes those surrounding fragments related with the site by using elements which used to be adopted in temple. In the plan, by putting 4 walls around the core(observatory) as pin-wheel, we create a community space and three different size of Engawa. They are put in different levels and make spiral, then going through the core, and reach the top.

Duration : 1weeks Loction : Anywhere in Japan Main Use : Housing project Team work with Hikaru Yuri

Kura inheriting in the site as a shpae Kura, which is Traditional Japanese thick earthen walled storage buildings, used to be a shelter to perserve things for 1 person or 1 familly. In the project, Kura is existing in the site. Therefore, it is not for private, it becomes for public. However, if only it changed from private to public as a program, it is difficult to take a root there and becomes useless. So I propose changing not only program, but also the shape of the housing surrounding the Kura to make it opened toward the city to take a root in the site or city as an own character there.
