Greetings from Director General Jen-Ni Yang, Bureau of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Economic Affairs

The Taiwan machine tools industry has been playing a key role in the global market. As a small island economy, Taiwan makes industrial machines that are geared mostly for export. 80% of the total machine tools turnout, which valued around US$4 billion annually in the past 3 years, are exported to over 138 countries across the world, making Taiwan the 5 th largest machine tool export countries behind Germany, Japan, Italy and China.

T h e d e v e l o p m e n t o f Ta i w a n ’s machine tool industry reflects the country’s overall industrial capability as well as its ability to meet various technical challenges, such as machinery design, processing and manufacturing, automatic control, information software, electromechanical interfaces and system integration. The industry has not only played an important supporting role in the manufacturing sector, but has also made a substantial contribution to national economic growth since 1940.

Comprising mostly small and medium-sized firms, the industry relies on a collaborative approach in a bid for survival and forged a path to becoming the 7th largest machine tool manufacturing country in the world on the back of high quality and competitive pricing. By emphasizing teamwork, industry alliance and solid infrastructure development, manufacturers strive to transform Taiwan into a global center for high-grade machine tool production and manufacturing.

The industry today is facing intensified global competition and economy challenges more than ever. In order to enhance the global marketing capability of the Taiwan machine tools and accessories industry, the Bureau o f F o r e i g n Tr a d e ( B O F T ) u n d e r the Ministry of Economic Affairs launched the Integrated Marketing Communications Project for the Taiwan Machine Tools Industry starting in 2014.

The main purpose of the program is to

bolster the image of the industry as a major global supplier of machine tools, equipment and key components.

Also, in a new wave of Industry 4.0, machine tools will play an indispensable role. The government is planning to develop into a global manufacturing hub for intelligent machinery and high-end equipment. The Intelligent Machinery Program aims to strengthen the industry value chain in intelligent manufacturing, products and services through customized production and seize opportunities in the US $5.2 trillion aerospace market.

With integrated hardware and software, and R&D capability, we are confident that Taiwan-made machine tools are ready for the new wave of industrial revolution. Meanwhile, the Taiwan machine tools industry will continue to work with clients to create a win-win situation.

The Taiwan Machine Tool Industry in the Age of Intelligent Integration Machine tools are known in the industry circle as the “mother of all machines”. They are capital goods with high unit prices, and as such, it is particularly important to choose machine tools from reputable suppliers.

The Taiwan machine tool industry enjoys a good global reputation thanks to its ability to deliver outstanding products, prices, and quality. It accounts for nearly five billion US dollars annually, and is projected to achieve compound growth of 9% by 2020. It is largely driven by strong demands from aerospace, submarine, precision medical equipment, electronics, mobile, and computing sectors. In the age of smart manufacturing, Taiwan-made machine tools that are of exceptional quality are not just important; they are indispensable.

Taiwan-based machine tool makers are prepared for the smart manufacturing era In the future, the so-called smart machine tools will be integrated into something that closely resembles a robot, having robotic arms and sensors that

provide vision and even tactile response to artificial intelligence of the central “brain”, which processes information using cloud computing and big data.

However, this level of capability is still under development and will require some 10-20 years more. With humans and civilization increasingly reliant on machines and a level of precision that only machines are capable of, intelligent machines could provide manufacturers such as automobile and aerospace producers with boundless opportunities for smart production, enabling manufacturers to increase customization, better understand production process requirements and integrate the appropriate software to truly meet market demand. World Design Capital Taipei 2016 - Improving Quality of Life

Taiwan is acknowledged on the world stage for its achievements in design.

Germany’s Red Dot, design award has selected two museums in Taiwan out of four similar institutions in the world to make its award-winning collection for public viewing. Taiwanese designers have accumulated countless awards bestowed by major international design awarding bodies, such as iF, Red Dot, G-Mark, IDEA and D&AD. Taiwan Excellence, which hosts the annual Taiwan Excellence Awards, is a representation of Taiwan’s highquality co-brands based on four factors: research and development, design, quality, and marketing. Each entry is judged based on its "innovation value".

Over 7,870 locally designed products have been selected as entries since 1993.

The winning products are awarded the coveted Taiwan Excellence seal of approval, which signfy innovative technology and user-friendly design.

Taipei was recently chosen to host the World Design Capital (WDC) 2016 by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID). The WDC this year will feature such monthly events as Creative EXPO, which is scheduled to be held at the Taipei’s Huashan 1914 Creative Park, the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, and the Taipei EXPO Dome. Creative EXPO will showcase activities that demonstrate the quality of life in Taiwan.

Three most celebrated festivals in Taiwan - Celebrating Taiwanese Customs with Feasts and Traditions Local festivals are the window to traditional folk customs. Taiwan offers several festivals all year round. The three most celebrated festivals in TaiwanSpring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival-attract thousands of foreign and local visitors each year.

Taiwanese also celebrate other traditional events such as Lantern Festival (Yuanxiao), which is celebrated across the island by releasing lanterns into the night sky.

The Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival along with several local rituals such as Yanshui Beehive Firecrackers Festival and Taitung Bombarding Master Han Dan has also attracted many foreign tourists to Taiwan. The Taiwan Lantern Festival was featured as one of the best

festivals in the world on the Discovery Channel program "Fantastic Festivals of the World".

The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. During which the locals celebrate by holding dragon boat races and eating glutinous rice dumplings (zhongzi). Dragon boat races held throughout Taiwan lure both local and foreign teams and hordes of overseas visitors to the island every year.

Mid-autumn Festival, also known as Moon Festival, is the most romantic festival celebrated by the Chinese community around the world. The locals celebrate this special occasion with mooncakes, which symbolize reunion, and pomelos (yòuzi), which symbolize abundance and good fortune.

Taiwan’s food culture is popular among foodies from around the world, and night markets are a quintessential part of the Taipei food experience.

The top 10 “must try” local foods are pearl milk tea with chewy tapioca balls, Danzi noodles, stinky tofu, crispy Taiwanese fried chicken, oyster vermicelli, Taiwanese shaved ice, pineapple cakes, pan-fried buns, “iron” eggs, and slow-cooked ribs stewed in medicinal herbs.

Ningxia Night Market, Shi-Da Night Market and Shilin Night Market are some of the most popular night markets in Taiwan. Shilin Night Market in particular is famous for its “big-breadwraps-small-bread and diced beef” special. Exotic foods like snake meat dishes are available at night markets near Longshan Temple.

Raohe Street Night Market is adjacent to the century-old Matsu Temple in Taipei and Fengjia Night Market is where many local delicacies came from.

The Tainan Flower Night Market is considered the largest of all night markets in Taiwan that houses nearly 400 food stands. Unlike Shilin Night Market, which is open for business seven days a week, Flower Night Market opens only three days a week, on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Down in Kaohsiung people frequent both Rueifong Night Market and Lio Ho Night Market.

No trip to Taiwan is complete without visiting the different night markets and trying the local delicacies.

Germany, and Taiwan. National Applied Research Laboratory published a report on Taiwan’s technology competitiveness on October 2016, Taiwan ranked 4th for applying patents in the areas of intelligent machinery and manufacturing.

The top three invested sectors are electrical engineering, semiconductor, and machine tools. The exceptional performance helps laid a solid foundation for smart machinery.

Industries related to smart machinery include cloud computing, internet of things, data mining, and cyber-physical system, which can be grouped into data processing and information application.

From the Global Competitiveness Report in 2016-2017 released by the World Economic Forum (WEF), Taiwan retained its position as 15th most competitive economy among 144 countries been surveyed, and have ranked 4th among Asian economies.

In the 2017 World Competitiveness Yearbook published by IMD, Taiwan ranked 14th in economic competitiveness among 61 countries surveyed.

The Most Competitive Machinery Manufacturing Cluster in the World Taiwan’s machine tool industry has the advantage of possessing a complete supply chain. The program aims to strengthen the industry value chain in intelligent manufacturing, products and services through customized production and seize opportunities in the US $5.2 trillion aerospace market.

To this end, leading manufacturers of Taiwan's aerospace industry have signed contracts with the Industrial Technology Research Institute’s (ITRI) I-Team and the machine tool focused M-Team to jointly establish the A-I-M Aerospace Machine Tool Industry Technology Alliance. The alliance will forge cooperation between Taiwan's aerospace

and machine tool industries. Going forward, aviation grade technology and equipment jointly developed with ITRI and technology will strengthen the industry value chain through intelligent manufacturing, products and services.

The ultimate aim is to increase the added value of components for equipment made in Taiwan by more than 30%.

As an example, Evergreen Aviation Precision Corporation has already received orders for manufacturing and assembling of Boeing aircraft fuselage.

This demonstrates that the formation of the A-I-M Aerospace Machine Tool Industry Technology Alliance has helped high-end machine tool manufacturers and the aerospace industry to seize opportunities in the global aviation market. The Alliance has set a target for

the construction of 36,770 civil aircraft over the next 20 years.

The aerospace industry understandably places great emphasis on precision machinery and advanced technology. The entry of Taiwanese machine tool manufacturers into the international aerospace supply chain bears witness to the wisdom of the continuous investment of domestic manufacturers in R&D and in the improvement of their facilities. To Boost Machine Precision: the CuttingChatter Lab and Domestic Monitoring System Under the guidance of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Precision Machinery Research Development Center (PMC) has combined the forces of four leading machine tool enterprises to establish a dedicated chatter research lab, tasked with developing intelligent software for online monitoring systems.

This monitoring and application software can be embedded in machine controllers to improve machine performance by at least 20% and increase production value by more than US $ 0.3 billion Cell phones, aerospace transportation, automobiles, motorcycles, and general hardware all need machine tools during manufacturing to achieve smooth or textured surfaces. However, instability

from vibrations during the cutting process may result in damage to the tool or to products, and lowers production efficiency.

The chatter research lab will combine domestic talent to resolve this issue and improve efficiency of cutting processes to shorten production cycles.

With the lab’s three primary goals of (1) predicting fluttering; (2) establishing a cutting force coefficient database; and (3) developing new SOPs for machine tool cutting performance testing, the result will be machine tools that will meet the industry’s needs and assist Taiwan’s machine tool manufacturers in becoming industry leaders.

Automated Automobile Production Lines – Taiwan is Export-ready Multi-machine automated production lines used to be the specialty of European and Japanese manufacturers, but Taiwanese machine tool manufacturers have made great progress in developing fully automated production lines.

In the past, Taiwanese machine tool manufacturers mostly focused on standalone CNC machine tools, configured with robotic arms and control systems.

However, in recent years, domestic manufacturers have successfully exported completely automated production lines to the Japanese and Chinese markets for use by auto parts and components manufacturers.

Representative of these recent achievements, Falcon Machine Tools has developed a 55-meter fully automated production line for aluminum wheels, including four vertical lathes (for the lathing of the inner and outer diameter), four processing machines (drilling,) and high-shelf, intelligent robotic arms. This line produces one large forged aluminum wheel every three minutes, with stunning efficiency, and with no manual labor needed for the transport of material.

In the future, the design of production lines that incorporate robotic arms and fixtures for a variety of industries will be developed.

There are two other fully automated aluminum wheel production lines capable of processing aluminum wheels for trucks and passenger cars. These production lines can also perform mixed line production, and the newly developed WHL-55 high-gloss rim processing machine can process aluminum wheel surface treads and achieve a mirror-like surface gloss effect, improving wheel quality. Processing quality is on a par with European and American models while the machine comes with a very affordable price tag.

Machine Modification for Maximum Productivity In the era of Industry 4.0, "advanced" doesn’t just mean advanced technology, but also implies a focus on providing customer solutions that maximize productivity. Taiwan’s machine tool manufacturers are adept at machine modification and adoption of new technologies and concepts, with an endgoal of enhancing customer productivity.

Especially in terms of automated units and automated production lines, Taiwan has achieved tremendous results.

In addition to the aforementioned automated wheel production lines, an automatic pallet changer (APC) carousel is being developed that will improve automatic loading and unloading times

The APC can reduce machinery’s noncutting operational time by increasing the efficiency of changing pallets through an automated guard door that opens and stops the the work platform. This movement will boost production volume and allow for extended clipping time for operational units.

Currently, there is one Taiwanese machine tool manufacturer that has released a multi-disc workbench manufacturing system with eight workbenches, capable of performing fully automated processing on 45 axes.

It offers greater precision positioning, easy integration, intelligent features,

and improved efficiency for increased performance. This successful product clearly demonstrates Taiwan’s abilities in the field.

In recent years, Japanese auto parts manufacturers, well known for their quality, have chosen the APC production line developed by Taiwan’s machine tool manufacturers for use in processing of air inlets, gearbox casings, and other key components. This demonstrates Taiwan's machine tool industry’s capability and its commitment to its customers by placing more resources in R&D and innovation.

Increasing Manufacturers’ Services - Customization, Derivative Services and Cross-Industry Application As manufactures of automobiles, aircraft, molds, consumer electronics, and aerospace components continue to introduce new products to the market, production methods will continue to evolve. However, no matter how they evolve, machines will be doing the manufacturing. Therefore, innovation is key. For the machine tool manufacturer, the need to work with changes in manufacturing processes at the application end user and to stay close to production needs.

Servitization is a recent popular term used by manufactures and refers to an extension of conventional product manufacturing to include additional services. The manufactures no longer

limit their operational scope to solely manufacturing, but may extend into a range of services that meet customers’ needs for product differentiation and products with higher added value.

Specific practices include customization, derivative services, as well as crossindustry cooperation. Taiwan's machine tool industry is actively strengthening research and development, modifying product life cycles, and moving towards greater levels of servitization and customization by not just selling products, but also providing maintenance and after-sales services. Multi-tasking lathe Vturn-X200  Controlled by Fanuc’s latest controller 31i, this twin-spindle lathe Vturn-X200 includes a rotary tool-spindle (B-axis) which swivels at +115°~ -110°. The live tools rotate at maximum speed 12000rpm for an angle milling along the workpieces clamped by the main spindle or the subspindle chucks to reveal a versatile application by single machine set-up.
