ISSUE 1 / APRIL 2018
not settled in a definite place; fluctuating or variable.
curated and designed by tahreem alvi.
i’m a “coconut” brown on the outside, white on the inside.
you don’t have to put yourself in a box to be explainable to someone. everyone multicultural and smart enough knows how no one’s really ethnically isolated. it’s weird how overlapping our origins are, do you really want to label yourself?
NOT BEING GOOD AT WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE MY NATIVE LANGUAGE IS A HUGE DETRIMENT TO FEELING LIKE I’LL NEVER QUITE BE ABLE TO INTEGRATE INTO THAT COMMUNITY.
I’M PERCEIVED AS THIS EXOTIC ‘OTHER’ ON CAMPUS WHEN REALLY I’M JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER PERSON AROUND JUST BROWN.
i can never truly feel like i fit in with a group of people who aren’t coloured and am always aware of the coloured people in the room.
“banana in particular was a really big term in east asian american communities for quite a while.
it was a compliment that i wasn’t indian.
EVERYONE SHOVED WHITENESS DOWN MY THROAT AS A KID.
told me i wasn’t korean enough and that i should really respect my culture and treasure where my family has come from.
thank you incredibly, to everyone who trusted me with their personal experiences, and for giving me the opportunity to share them. this zine would not have been possible without you or your contribution.
