Aim: How do we construct box-and-whisker plots?

Vocabulary (see handout)

• Range - The difference between the lowest and the highest numbers in a set of data • Quartiles - each part when data is separated into four equal parts • Median - the middle number in an ordered set of data • First Quartile or Lower Quartile - the median of the lower half of a set of data • Third Quartile or Upper Quartile - the median of the upper half of a set of data • Five number summary - includes the minimum, the first quartile, the median, the third quartile, and the maximum • Minimum - the least value in a set of data • Maximum - the greatest value in a set of data • Box-and-whisker plot - a graph that summarizes a data set along a number line. • Interquartile range - the difference between the first and third quartiles in a data set • Percentiles – separate data sets into 100 equal parts • Percentile rank - The percentile rank of a score is the percentage of scores that are less than or equal to that score.
