Until we heard the shooting ... Raised in rural Somerset, I hadn't been exposed to a great deal of small-arms fire, so I’m not sure how I recognised it ... Then I heard it again: ka-ka-ka-ka. I tried to leap out of bed, only to rediscover the mosquito net. Pauline and I groggily struggled to find our way out, but eventually gave up. 'If this was our time to die, why fight?' ... Then we heard the words of the Imam calling local people to the five o’clock prayers, over an old PA system that suffered from crackly, gunfirelike static.
