Modernizing a Classic With a community as storied as John’s Island, it’s only natural that homes built decades ago are ready for a renovation. Many new homeowners today in this community are opting to purchase an older home for its location and views, and rebuild from the ground up. But the new owners of this charming home chose instead to remodel the existing layout. What started out as a one-room project, culminated into a whole-home renovation. Dated lattice walls, old ‘eyeball’ recessed lights, and oodles of Mexican tiles were still hanging around from the 1980’s as if time simply left them behind. With the Page 2 Design team’s creative vision and thoughtful guidance given to the homeowners, the transformation to today’s soothing, open living spaces gave this home beautiful new life. Thanks to a design team partnership with Jeff Ray, architect and Joe Foglia, general contractor, this ‘before’ and ‘after’ story is dramatic.
DESIGN PROJECT AT A GLANCE Location: John’s Island in Vero Beach, Florida Size: 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms Year Built: 1985 Year Remodeled: 2017 Design team:

Kitchen From heavy black countertops and dated Mexican floor tiles, this kitchen is now cool and contemporary. The new Marble of the World counter top is Azul-Lennon granite, which the design team doubled to support the modern waterfall edge. The island countertop is now nearly 3 thick. Currey and Company oyster shell pendants complete the sleek design and were one of our design team’s favorite finds.

Master Bedroom Take my blues away! These dramatic ‘before’ and ‘after’ images are worth a thousand words. The newly renovated Master bedroom is barely recognizable as the same space. A custom furniture package, calming earth tones, and a tranquil vista of the waterway is the perfect way to start the day.

Dining Room What was once a sunroom, the new dining room is now a seamless transition from the kitchen and living room. Tongue and groove ceiling, large marble floor tiles, a gorgeous chandelier spanning the new table, and soft shades of fabric set the perfect dinner scene.

Living Room Dark and divided, the main living area was begging for fresh light and room for the view. Builder Joe Foglia and Designer, Page Franzel collaborated to transform the foyer and living room. Mexican tile, a mirrored wall and lattice divider were the first features to go. “We basically stripped down the entrance,” Page said. “All of the materials were replaced with contemporary elements to maintain the integrity of the new design.” Walls were repainted a warm neutral. The tongue and groove ceiling with exposed beams was painted a fresh white. And the once tiny fireplace was given a hearth-to-ceiling stone treatment. Earthy and understated, the living room is now a welcoming retreat.
Our key chandelier suspended from the tongue and groove ceiling has a refreshing old world charm that perfectly complements the exposed beams.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS
Cruelty-free designs Anyone who knows designer, Page Franzel knows that her love for animals runs deep. It shows in her love for pets, Ziggy and Ali and her longstanding support of the Humane Society and H.A.L.O. No-Kill Rescue as they strive to find safe and loving homes for all animals. But what most people may not realize is that Page and her design team also bring their love of animals into all of their design projects. As often as possible, Page 2 Design chooses cruelty-free materials for their clients’ interior design elements and furniture packages. Cruelty-free products do not use animal testing or animal products in its materials. Becoming an ethical consumer when it comes to avoiding animal cruelty is something most of us aspire to but few of us attempt. And that’s because the task can be difficult and confusing. “I have long been an advocate for animal rights and have tried to ensure that Page 2 Design’s community involvement supported my convictions. While we have always designed and purchased with pets in mind, our company made a conscience decision this year to start with cruelty-free products first in all of our design projects,” Page said.
“My goal is to take a responsible approach to our products and materials as we strive to create interior designs that are both beautiful and animal-friendly.” - Page Franzel
To help further their mission, Page 2 Design will survey their manufacturing vendors to help authorize which product lines are authentically cruelty-free.

BREAK THROUGH DESIGN MOMENT
The World is Your Oyster The kitchen is the heart of the home — a place that family and friends gather to share a meal and make memories. In our featured John’s Island home renovation, our favorite design elements are the pendants illuminating the new kitchen island. Warm and inviting, the black veneer and natural oyster shells on the underside of these Currey and Company pendants are a surprising treat.
