WARNING: The use of parts which do not meet American Ram quality and design specifications could result in unit failure and/or serious injury to personnel near the pumping unit.  Before performing maintenance or inspection on a pumping unit, make certain that prime mover is off and locked-out in addition to preventing rotation of cranks and counterweights by chaining or blocking to prevent rotation.  Do not use brake as a safety stop, it is intended only for operational stops.  Any movement of the unit during maintenance or inspection of the unit can cause serious personal injury. LUBRICATION Gear Reducer. For temperatures down to O°F, use an AGMA No .5 EP (ISO VG 220) premium mild extreme with rust and oxidation inhibitors and an anti-foam agent. Pour point of the oil should be 5° F or lower. For temperatures down to -30°F, use an AGMA NO.4 EP (ISO VG 150) premium mild extreme pressure lubricant (preferably sulphur-phosphorus type) with rust and oxidation inhibitors and an anti-foam agent. Pour point of the oil should be -15°F or less. Do not use multi-viscosity oils.

Structural Bearings. The Association of American Railways (AAR) has developed a grease specification, AAR M-942, designed for the saddle, tail, and wrist pin bearings. Each bearing assembly is fitted with a hydraulic grease fitting so that the lubrication can be applied with a gun. They require monthly lubrication with regular use and well conditioned oil seals. Be sure that the plungers in the relief fittings are free so that the grease pressure will not damage the oil seals. Tapered roller type bearings have relief slots instead of relief fittings. Pump grease slowly.
