FLOATING RESEARCH LAB HĂ JEK - HULĂ?N STUDIO The building is used as hydrobiological research station and also offers a floating public area above the Vltava water level. The station informs and educates the visitors and the passers-by about the state of pollution of the river and the underwater life. The form is inspired by the testing tube rack, which functions as aquariums separated into exposition area and research area in the lower deck. The pontoon is designed like a steel ship shell. It is made by cross-direction steel ribbs with other diagonal reinforcement. The shell is shaped by shipbuilding steel. Ceilings and floors are designed from grates. Aquariums are made from special transparent polymer material. Between the ribbs are balast tanks (like in a submarine). They provide a variability of the pontoon draft. Daylight could come into the underdeck through skylights in the upper-deck.
