Par/By Tessa Verbeek A lot of changes have happened for the Canadian Limousin Association over the past months. These changes spell excitement, building momentum, and a bright and solid future for the Limousin breed to be on the forefront of Canadian beef breeds. I am pleased to introduce myself as the new General Manager of the Canadian Limousin Association, taking over from Anne Brunet-Burgess. I have thoroughly enjoyed my position thus far – the Limousin breed holds great value in all sectors of the industry, and the folks involved in our exceptional breed are the best of the best. In every conversation I have with Limousin breeders and supporters they always mention the fantastic people involved in our breed – our people are truly a shining point for our breed! I am looking forward to visiting with more CLA members over the coming months during the fall shows and thank you for welcoming me into the Limousin family!
Exciting Limousin Voice News
The Canadian Limousin Association and Today’s Publishing have been working to enhance the benefits to not only Limousin Voice advertisers but to all members through added exposure to the commercial industry. With this goal in mind the Limousin Voice will now be published three times a year. All three issues will be mailed using the Canadian Limousin Association commercial mailing list which is comprised of Limousin bull purchasers throughout Canada, extending our readership to 2,200 people for each issue! It is more important than ever that you transfer all sold animals in a timely manner so your buyers can benefit from the magazine distribution.
The new on-line herd management software and registry system, Digital Beef, was opened up to the CLA membership in May 2015. This new technology is a great tool for our membership however comes with an obvious learning curve. The CLA office staff has been working hard to both serve members’ inquiries and assist them with navigating Digital Beef as well as taking care of registry work. This has created a backlog of work that has slowed down the turn-around time for registry work. The CLA office staff is working diligently to get the work done as efficiently as possible and appreciates your patience during this time of transition. The CLA staff are happy to assist you with using Digital Beef, however we ask that you first read the instructions on how to use Digital Beef, which are posted on the Digital Beef page of the CLA website, before calling the office with questions.
Beaucoup de changements sont survenus au cours des derniers mois pour l’Association Canadienne Limousin. Ces changements se traduisent en une énergie renouvelée qui crée une nouvelle excitation pour sécuriser un avenir brillant et solide pour la race Limousin et une place de choix dans l’industrie du bœuf. C’est avec plaisir que j’occupe le poste de directrice générale de l’Association canadienne du Limousin depuis le départ d’Anne Brunet-Burgess. Jusqu’à maintenant j’ai bien aimé le défit de ma position et de travailler pour la race Limousin qui détient de grandes valeurs dans tous les secteurs de l’industrie. De plus, les gens qui y sont impliqués sont vraiment exceptionnels. Cela a été dit et redit dans toutes les conversations que j’ai eues à date avec les supporters et les éleveurs du Limousin! J’ai bien hâte de vous rencontrer au cours des prochains mois lors des expositions principales et je vous remercie de m’avoir si bien accueillit jusqu’à maintenant.
Nouveaux développements pour le Limousin Voice
L’Association canadienne du Limousin et Today’s Publishing (le publieur du Voice) ont collaboré pour intensifier les avantages non seulement pour les annonceurs du Limousin Voice, mais tous ceux impliqués avec la race par l’entremise d’une meilleure vitrine de notre produit parmi les lecteurs du secteur commercial. Donc pour rentrer dans l’objectif de faire parvenir le Voice à tous les producteurs commerciaux, il ne sera désormais publié que trois fois par an. Ces trois numéros seront distribués à l’aide de la liste d’acheteur d’animaux selon vos transferts de propriété. Cette liste étendra notre lectorat jusqu’à 2 200 personnes à chaque numéro ! Il est plus important que jamais que vous transférez tous les animaux vendus en temps opportun afin que vos acheteurs puissent bénéficier de la distribution du magazine.
Depuis mai 2015, l’association utilise un nouveau logiciel pour toutes les transactions et la tenue des registres Limousin. Digital Beef offre une technologie avancée qui représente un outil formidable pour nos membres, mais le changement vient toutefois avec une courbe d’apprentissage évidente. Le personnel du bureau de l’association travaille à la fois à répondre aux demandes pour des renseignements des membres et les assiste à la navigation du system en-linge, tout en continuant le travail de registre qui arrive au bureau à tous les jours. Malheureusement cela a crée un retard accumulé pour les demandes d’enregistrement. Nous travaillons tous avec diligence pour procéder le travail le plus efficacement

Information concerning your 2015 WHE will be mailed to you in October. If you are an online user we remind you that you will not receive any paper forms for your inventory. Please remember that Whole Herd Enrolment is due no later than January 15, 2016. Online users may find instructions on how to post their inventory on our website.
The New Website of the Association
The new CLA website was launched in early 2015 with great feedback on the refreshed online presence of the Limousin breed. The website remains the hub of all pertinent CLA information for breeders and buyers and is supplemented by our presence on social media via our Facebook and Twitter pages. We remind Limousin breeders and bull buyers to take advantage of the Commercial Calf Listing service that is provided complementary to operations looking to advertise Limousin influence calves for sale privately or going to public auction. Please visit the CLA website to fill out a form to list your calves.
The Limousin branded RFID tag program has been tremendously successful, as sales have far surpassed expectations already and continue to grow. To date we are just shy of 7,500 tags being sold to producers across Canada to be tagged in the ear of Limousin influence calves. I created a poster this fall that is to be distributed to auction marts across the country informing buyers of what this pink tag means, and the value of purchasing Limousin influence calves. At this time, the tags can ordered from the CLA website or by calling the office. However, watch for a brand new self-serve web access via the CCIA tag store. I am also working on having a similar tag available for producers in Quebec in 2016.
National Limousin Events
The Ontario Limousin Association is hosting the 2015 National Limousin Events at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, ON. The junior showmanship is at 8:30 am on November 6th followed by the Royal Elite All Breed Sale at 6:30 pm on November 6th. The National Limousin Show is at 3:00 pm on November 7th. Come join the fun and Limousin fellowship!

Le nouveau site internet de l’association
Le site internet de l’association a été refait en 2015 et les utilisateurs en semblent ravis. Le site est le centre de toute information au sujet de l’Association Canadienne Limousin, soutenu par les nouvelles de tous les jours qui apparaissent sur Facebook ou sur Twitter. N’oubliez pas que l’association canadienne offre un affichage gratuit sur le site www.limousin.com lorsque vos veaux commerciaux sont mis en vente. Ce service est offert aux producteurs pur-sang et commerciaux qui ont des veaux d’embouche de génétique Limousin à vendre privément ou à un encan publique. Il suffit de remplir le formulaire à partir du site. Encourager vos acheteurs de taureaux à publiciser leurs veaux Limousin, car l’association se charge d’aviser les acheteurs potentiels. Le site internet peut aussi prendre vos petites annonces pour vos animaux pur-sang à vendre, semence ou embryons. Les annonces restent affichées aussi longtemps que vous le voulez et le coût est de $50 par annonce.
Concours national Limousin
L’Ontario vous attend en grand nombre pour le concours national qui aura lieu dans le cadre de la Royal de Toronto. Les événements commenceront le 6 novembre avec un concours junior à 8 :30, suivi de la vente pour toutes les races à 18 :30. Le jugement Limousin aura lieu samedi le 7 novembre à 15hrs.
Le programme d’identification Limousin
Le programme d’identification Limousin connait un succès monstre. A date près de 7,500 étiquettes d’oreille ont été vendues au Canada. Les producteurs profitent vraiment de cette opportunité de bien faire remarquer leurs animaux de génétique Limousin. Un poster sera affiché dans les encans d’animaux pour rappeler aux acheteurs de veaux, qu’une étiquette rose représente un animal d’influence Limousin. Nous travaillons également avec l’ATQ pour pourvoir offrir une boucle rose équivalente au Québec, spécialement pour les éleveurs d’animaux Limousin. Le lancement est prévu pour le début de 2016.

CLA Presidentâ€™s Report By Terry Hepper
As I sit down to write this for the fall edition of the Limousin Voice, it means summer is over and what a summer it was; extremely dry in the west and mixed temperatures and extreme moisture in other parts of the country. I was elected CLA president at the CLA Annual General Meeting in Stratford, and am very honoured and privileged to continue helping the board and breed. Iâ€™d like to thank the retiring board members for their time and dedication and welcome the new directors. Our new board is very committed to continuing to improve the breed and with the new energetic General Manager we will continue to build the popularity of our breed.
Last spring the Limousin branded pink CCIA tag program was launched and proved to be a huge success. It will continue to grow in popularity as sellers and buyers recognize it as a useful tool in the marketing of Limousin cattle. I encourage all producers to start or continue to use these pink tags as well as the free commercial calf listing service the CLA offers members on our website. I look forward to the fall events which will allow me the opportunity to meet new and existing breeders. I expect cattle prices to continue at their current high levels and Limousin influenced calves to be at the top end of the price range. I hope everyone has a successful harvest and will see you in the fall.

Terry Hepper of Zehner, SK was elected as the new president of the Canadian Limousin Association at the CLA Annual General Meeting held on August 8, 2015 in Stratford, ON. Terry is a seasoned CLA Clayton, Sara, Terry, Lynette board member having Erin, Brandon previously held the positions of Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice President, as well as previously being the Canadian Junior Limousin Association adult advisor. His commitment to the Limousin breed is evident in his strong involvement and unwavering support of the breed. Terry was raised on the family farm at Zehner, SK and after graduating high school worked at Viterra grain terminal at Balgonie. He and his wife, Lynette, own and operate Eden Meadows Farm which is a mixed operation consisting of 50 breeding females. They have been breeding Limousin cattle since 1974. “We are trying to maintain the calving ease and thick butted animals that attracted us to the Limousin breed.” Terry says they continue to maintain herd size while striving to improve quality. The Heppers also farm 900 acres of hay and cereal grains. Terry and Lynette have two adult daughters, Sara and Erin, who are both still actively involved with the farm and much of the showing and pre-show work, despite both of them living 9 hours away and having careers and businesses of their own. Sara and Clayton live at Entwhistle, AB while Erin and Brandon live at Drayton Valley, AB. “The girls have been involved with cattle since they were old enough to grab a hold of a pitch fork or comb. It seems like the only true holiday in our house is one of loading up the trailer and everyone heading to a show or sale.” Terry and Lynette have been involved with the Saskatchewan Limousin Association holding various board

positions throughout the years. Terry was also actively involved with the Valleyview 4-H Club when his daughters were members. He has been a volunteer at Agribition for years as the Limousin breed representative as well as a member of the Junior Beef Extreme committee.

Eden Meadows Farm has enjoyed many triumphs with the Limousin breed. Raising champions and seeing those cattle go on to do well in other breeder’s herds is near the top of the list of accomplishments for Terry and Lynette. However, the biggest reward of all for the Hepper’s has been the people they have met, the long-time friends they have gained within the cattle business, and the lasting impression these people have made. In his four years on the CLA board of directors he has certainly met many new faces in the Limousin breed and has left a positive lasting impression himself. “My time on the CLA board has been very interesting. It has allowed me to see how the CLA office works for the members across the country and I encourage all breeders Lynette helping in the washrack to stay actively involved and continue to support our breed. It is only with strong membership support that the success of the breed will grow.” Terry is confident the Limousin breed is poised for increased demand and success, “I want to see our breed get back as one of the popular choices for buyers. With buyers and feedlots looking for Limousin influenced calves it will increase demand for calves and result in more need for Limousin bulls.”

be the breed of choice for Steve. “We pasture in the hills; the cattle have to be hardy and strong. We want something that spits out 95 pound calves and within 15 minutes they’re running around. The gains a Limousin calf has throughout the summer are unreal. Our customers want minimal work and high outputs; that means easy calving and big weaning weights in the fall. With Limousin you can have them both. We could never imagine not running Limousin cattle in our pastures.”
Steve Lingley & Jenna Donnelly Lingley Limousin has deep roots in the Limousin breed, and now the next generation is taking the reins and bringing the purebred and fullblood operation to the forefront of the breed. Lingley Limousin was founded west of Irma, AB in 1974 by William Lingley. Will and his wife, Glenna, managed the herd until they decided to take a break in the mid 90’s. Although, not showing or selling seedstock, the Lingleys always had a few purebred Limousin cows around and kept purebred Limousin bulls walking the pastures. The family remained very close with many Limousin breeders. Will and Glenna’s son Steve grew up helping his parents and gaining an appreciation for the Limousin breed. He was an avid 4-H member along with his sisters Cassie and Ashley. Steve took the welding program at Lakeland College in Vermilion, Alberta and started his own welding company which also allowed him to return to the farm and begin re-building the Limousin herd. There was no real decision as to whether Limousin would

Jenna grew up on a farm west of Spruce View, AB where her parents raised a predominantly Shorthorn/ Angus/Simmental cowherd. She took the Land Administration program at Olds College and now works as a Maintenance Data Analyst at ConocoPhillips Canada in addition to dabbling in photography and design work with her business, Vintage Studios and Design. Of course she is also Steve’s right hand woman when it comes to cattle work. Not coming from a Limousin background originally, Jenna has found the people involved in the breed to be most welcoming. “The Limousin family has to be one of the best out there; absolutely everyone involved in this breed has been the most inviting and kindest people I’ve ever been involved with. It’s people like you all that puts this breed in a class of its own.” The Lingleys began building their herd with the purchase of high quality animals from various sales as well as the purchase of a group of cattle from the Bodell family (Golden Harvest Ranches) when they dispersed in 2013. Currently, Lingley Limousin is home to 35 head of breeding females as well as a few commercial Limousin females. They are also passionate about the fullblood side of the program, as it was the heavy muscle and big rump of the Limousin that drew the Lingleys to the breed at the beginning and they appreciate the history behind these pillars of the Limousin breed today. One of the most important things Steve and Jenna feel they did to revive the Lingley Limousin name was to hit the show road and put a face to their operation. “We met so many people; Limousin producers, commercial producers, and many producers in others breeds as well. We got our cattle out there in the flesh, saw other breeders’ cattle in the flesh and promoted the breed.”

Steve and Jenna are currently developing a marketing strategy to help promote their program as well as the Limousin breed in their area. They also have plans to add an ET program to quickly inject quality genetics into their herd and work to

animals and the breed as a whole. “We strive to raise easy keeping, high performing cattle and the docility must be there also. When people walk through and compliment us, it’s a nice feeling to know we are heading in the right direction.” So it’s no wonder when asked what their biggest triumph has been since they started out Steve and Jenna don’t name a big accolade one of their animal’s has won, instead they simply say that having people interested in their cattle, not only at shows but at home in the pasture as well, is their greatest reward.
Showing their Limousin animals has been an important marketing tool for Lingley Limousin expand their program. They place a high value on providing accurate information to producers to assist them with making the most appropriate choices for their program and maintaining a relationship with their customers. Curtis Bielecki, Paradise Hill, SK I have been on the CJLA board for three years. This year I am the President. Our operation is RCN Livestock and I graduated from Lakeland College with my fourth class power engineering certificate. I enjoy the breed because it is a very new breed to our area and it is becoming very popular. I enjoy being on the CJLA board because it gives you a chance to meet new people and to also to be a part of this growing breed.
Nicole Bielecki, Paradise Hill, SK I have been on the CJLA board for three years and am currently the secretary/reporter. I am in grade 12 and my brother Curtis, sister Ryley and I run a purebred cow/ calf operation under the name RCN Livestock. Being on the CJLA board allows me to meet new people and become more involved in the cattle industry near and far. My dad and uncle own and run Darling Farms Ltd. which they cash crop and have a commercial cow/calf operation. My mom and dad own and operate Darling Farms where we raise and show Limousin cattle. I attend Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario for their Insurance program. I enjoy the Limousin breed because of the versatility of the breed and being able to cross a different breed with a Limousin and being able to improve that cross. I enjoy being an influential part in educating and promoting the benefits of the Limousin breed to future generations by being on the CJLA board.

Samantha Kennedy, Omemee, ON This is my first year on the CJLA board. I am currently also the secretary on the OJLA board and in grade 12. My family owns and operates Crown Hill Acres. Since we are a smaller breed I enjoy knowing everyone associated with the breed. The best part of being on the board is getting to be friends with kids from across Canada, working as a team, and getting opportunities most kids donâ€™t get. CLJA News The 2015 Canadian Junior Limousin Association Impact Show was held in Stratford, Ontario August 7 and 8. We had 52 junior participants exhibiting a total of 104 head of Limousin cattle from five provinces including; Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and Nova Scotia. The CJLA board would like to thank everyone who participated in the show and the organizers who helped put the show on. We would also like to give a huge thank you to the generous sponsors. They made the show a fantastic event! The 2016 edition of the CJLA show will be in Alberta, the date and location will be announced soon. In other news, the CJLA held their Annual General Meeting on August 6 and elected a new board of directors. The new CJLA board will be going to the CLA office in Calgary in December to have their first meeting following the AGM. The CJLA reminds all junior members that scholarship applications are now being accepted for the two $500 scholarships and two $250 scholarships awarded to CJLA members annually. It has been quite a year in the Limousin breed complete with success and change. In order to get value out of the change, it will take breeder participation. The great football legend, Vince Lombardi of the Green Bay Packers, once said... “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.” No doubt we are experiencing record prices for breeding stock, feeder cattle and high salvage values with a prolonged future due to North American inventory numbers. In times such as now, we can often become complacent and lax. Your submission of weights and herd information is key to produce genetic accuracies which move the breed forward. In this changing world, the use of genetic tools is becoming more frequent and valued by the cow/calf producer, the feedlot operator, the packer and you the purebred breeder. Your participation dictates your future! In addition, your participation requires attention as the fall show and sale season is now upon us. Breeders that take the time and huge expense to exhibit the programs at fall shows are promoting your breed... it takes breeders and visitors to set the ambiance for the show, and excitement means participation. Granted the major shows and sales are online but that reminds me of preaching in a church of empty pews. The largest lack of participation is at junior shows ...everyone likes to sell heifers to juniors but few care about the outcome. At this stage of the exciting livestock cycle... it’s time to put a little back! Lessons can be learned from the folks at T Bar who host the annual golf tournament raising money for juniors and their associations. Granted, much of the monies are through sponsorships from progressive companies and breeders but it takes many staff hours and funding to organize and run the event...it’s their way of giving a little back. The sales this fall offer wonderful opportunities to add new genetic cow lines to a program. Never has there been a better time to salvage several old bessies that have been climbing fences and support the breed, your fellow breeders and help yourself in the meantime.....that can be your way of putting a little back. Oh, by the way, I suggest buying two at ten rather than ten at two!

Plan To Succeed Fall 2015
As forage harvest wraps here in Ontario, I spend much of my time balancing rations for current inventories and ingredient quality. For this article I would like to run through the process I use to make these diets work for the cattlemen and cattlewomen I work with.
keep this simple for the example. On this farm we have a stockpile of 400 bales weighing 925 pounds each of average quality dry hay at 85% DM and we also have 200 bales weighing 1500 pounds of good quality wrapped hay at 55%DM.
The first step I go through is to get a count on inventory. Knowing exactly what you have to work with makes everything easier to manage. Measuring bunks to know volume of feed, as well as weighing bales can be a tedious task but makes it easier to have a plan as winter approaches. This process will also make spring feed purchasing decisions easier. If you know you have to buy feed, then you have all fall and early winter to find the right buys on what is needed. After figuring how much feedstuffs there is to work with, it is important to figure out how much is needed to keep the cows fed until grass time or until new the crop comes in.
With the cows running in good shape and weighing 1400 pounds they would eat around 2.2% of their body weight when dry and 2.5% when lactating. However, winters can be hard on them and they often need a bit more to deal with the extra maintenance cost, so if we averaged 2.5% all the way through the winter, I’d say that would be fair. Also lets assume the bred heifers running around 1100 pounds would eat the same rate. At this plan, I would aim to feed 35 pounds a day to the cows and the heifers eating 27.5 pounds. This totals 2025 pounds daily on a DM Basis.
When reviewing the research there are many factors used to calculate Dry Matter Intake (DMI) and these will vary with cattle type, feedstuffs, ambient temperature, amount of tag, and stage of production to name a few. This can make planning out inventories difficult but in my experience it is best to estimate high and if you carry out a bit of inventory it isn’t the end of the world. The next step is to know what the feed quality is. I have said it before and will say it again; Test Your Feed! This lets you know whether supplements to your feedstuffs are needed or whether you can make blends of on farm forages to make up the difference on low tests. As much as feed sampling has come a long way from calculating Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN), it can still be a good way to ball park quality. Forages low in TDN tend to have lower intakes and forages higher in TDN tend to have higher intakes. One of the best ways to demonstrate the importance of feed testing and knowing your inventory is to provide a simple example farm. Assuming a typical farm has 50 pregnant cows and keeping 10 replacement bred heifers we can run through some easy numbers to build a plan. Of course there would be bulls and heifer calves, but let’s
This operation needs to run 200 days to get from pulling cows in the fall till grass in the spring. With all this feed being dry hay and wrapped hay of average to good quality, we need a plan to use it. The dry hay should account for 167.8MT and the wrapped hay should total 136MT on an as fed basis. When adjusted for moisture content we have 217.43MT of ‘dry feed’ and based on calculations we need 216 MT to feed this herd for the winter. Feeding these cows at this blend, we should be able to get this herd off on the right track come spring time. Of course, all feed plans don’t work out this well, and often times we find ourselves short on feed or feed quality is lacking, and we have to have some flexibility to change the plan. If we don’t have a plan we can’t manage and we may start down paths that can reduce performance. My suggestion is to talk to your local nutritionists and figure out what makes the most sense for your operation. What a year 2015 has been, starting off with a cattle market full of enthusiasm like never before.This energy in the cattle business led to a record setting bull sale season that many had not even dreamed of. There was starting to be a feeling of the industry being bullet proof, but then a dry spring and start to summer had many worried of a wide spread drought. Humans are greedy by nature and that quickly began to appear in feed prices. Most producers did not jump the gun though, if the decade of BSE did anything for producers it taught them patience and ingenuity. Luckily in most areas, rain started to come in late July and most producers have reported unbelievable forage and pasture growth late in the season. In fact in many areas the fall is wet and has even hindered harvest, again good news for those of us with a little water and grass mixed together on our boots. We actually have clients who were planning to reduce their herd size who now have greenfeed for sale due to late germinating crops and less than ideal harvest weather. Out of the gate this fall, the calf market was wild, again higher than most of us could even imagine. Of course this led to record numbers of calves being sold for later delivery, which essentially kicked the calf run into motion quicker than usual. The last couple of weeks has seen the calf market moderate, which it always does when big numbers are on offer. Also some strength in the dollar as well as a few other factors have forced the market to level off, but definitely not crash. I recently had one producer call me up and say “man is this market ever ugly.” This same guy sold calves for the same money a year ago and called me ecstatic thinking he had just won the lottery! Again that damn human tendency to be greedy! Remember, every sector of the industry had a phenomenal turn last year and this year will be very profitable as well.
Ted has a saying “there is money for the bulls and money for the bears but there is no money for the hogs,” I think that fits as there is no place for any negativity in our industry today. As for the future, my recommendation is, put your sunglasses on! Our cow herd is still contracting and our markets only look to have the potential for expansion. After a great deal of trade negotiations it has been announced that Canada is part of the ground breaking Trans-Pacific Partnership. A free trade agreement including twelve Asia-Pacific nations including three of Canada’s largest trade partners, the U.S., Mexico and Japan. The later of these three is the most significant as we already have trade agreements with the other two. Japan imports 60% of the agricultural products they consume, which makes it a larger market than the entire EU market, all twenty eight countries. Canada already had Japan as a major customer but this agreement can only help us to get a larger portion of this huge and growing market. Around the world Canada is viewed as a country that will be prime to take advantage of a growing global food market. Canada has the ability to increase production in a sustainable way, due to our arable land, natural recourses, skilled producers, ability to process our products and our transportation infrastructure. All things point to a bright future in the Canadian cattle business.

Pressures from environmental concerns, limited resources, and an ever changing customer demand can be a whirlwind to some. One way farmers might mitigate these growing concerns is by investing in technology. With projects such as the ‘The Carcase Traits Project’ farmers can access a database that will make breeding management of cattle, a breeze. For United Kingdom Limousin cattle breeders, the key to good cattle has arrived: “the SNP key”. Using the SNP key breeders can make decisions about their cattle, efficiently and economically. Producers are able to collect DNA samples from their animals and compare it to the SNP key and make decisions based on breeding merit. These developments come from a four-year project between British Limousin Cattle Society, the Anglo Beef Producers, and Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), funded by the Government’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB).
What is the SNP Key?
SNPs (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) are a beacon to the possible genetic variation an animal may have. One may not be able to see these variations with the naked eye, which is why genetic analysis is helpful in giving us an indication of what traits the animal may possess before going to slaughter. Scientists use information from carcass traits, date of birth, date of slaughter, sex, breed, pedigree, and genotypes and combine them with carcass data from video imaging analysis (VIA) to determine the SNP key. The SNP key is frequently updated with the newest information available.
What is Video Imaging Analysis (VIA)?
A mounted camera captures digital images of the carcasses where 2D and 3D images are taken, through the use of specific lighting arrangements. Software image data are collected for key primal cut yields (Moore et al., 2014). The VIA collects phenotype carcass information on fat, confirmation, carcass weight, and nine primal cuts, including silverside, rump, striploin, topside, knuckle, flank, fillet, forequarter ribs, and hindquarter ribs.
How do they do it?
First, a modified Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) is calculated by combining information from the pedigree with VIA and other phenotype data, including date of birth and death, sex, and breed. Next, the genotype information, from the DNA sample, is incorporated with the phenotypic information to create the UK Limousin “SNP Key”.
Why is this important?
By combining VIA on slaughter animals and genomics data from DNA we can determine high quality grades of meat. If you can determine carcass traits earlier on in life breeders will know
what cattle to invest in rather than waiting until post-slaughter. It enables market signals to be clearer and easier to understand without being diluted amongst the value change. The future of breeding requires investment in innovative technology as it will help cattle breeders make management and breeding decisions that will save them time and money. By providing a base where other breeders can access information on Limousin cattle traits, this project is leading the way in providing an educational resource that will aid others in their breeding selection decisions.

Although the four-year mark is coming to a close, the next steps will be furthering the SNP key. Still, more information is needed. Numerous VIA cameras will be installed in abattoirs across the UK to compile more information to be inputted into the database. The hope is that breeders who use this key will also genotype their animals at birth. This will generate a platform for animal selection using validated EBV that combine phenotype and genotype information. In short, breeders will be able to know what traits a calf has inherited before it takes its first moo!

Demonstrated economic benefits from the study to date are hard to ignore, as the difference in progeny retail value between the best and worst sire was CA$851 per calf, based on both quality and yield. The Limousin breed is known for its genetic advantages including high quality beef and high yielding carcasses. Hello from the Pacific side of the Rockies! I hope this report finds everyone well and enjoying some increased moisture and strong calf prices! British Columbia has had a few Limousin happenings throughout the year, including the only all Limousin bull sale in British Columbia being held for the 26th year in a row in the Peace Country. Four breeders contributed to that sale held at VJV Dawson Creek, and saw 27 bulls average $5100! Fast forward to summer show season which was very successful for many Limousin breeders in British Columbia. Limousin were represented at four summer exhibitions plus many 4-H achievement days. In Fort St. John, Limousin took Champion Breeders Herd, Champion Get of Sire,
and Reserve Champion Bull among many other class winners. The Limo cross steers also topped many 4-H Achievement classes including Reserve Champion Steer out of 50 steers! A Limousin female was Reserve Supreme at the Nechako Valley Exhibition, and a Limousin bull calf took the Bull Calf Jackpot Show out of 29 all breed bull calves at that show. Interior Provincial Exhibition also saw some Limousin champions including Champion Jackpot Heifer! The British Columbia breeders are very excited to represent their province at some of the Alberta and Saskatchewan shows this fall. That is all we have to report so far this year! Erin Kishkan

New this year was a Commercial Evening hosted by the CLA and attended by representatives across the beef industry.

Greetings Cattle Producers and Limousin Enthusiasts, We held another successful Manitoba Limousin Show at Treherne in June followed by another great representation in July by Manitoba and Saskatchewan Limousin breeders in Harding. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors on powering the breed forward on the show road. A couple of reminders for attendance, and hopeful participation from other provinces. Our own Manitoba members are off to the Ag-Ex show and Extreme Bull Riding from October 28-31 and the Manitoba Limousin Advantage Sale on December 4. It was previously entertained by the Ag-Ex board to host Manitoba’s largest cattle event in conjunction with the MRCA Rodeo Finals; however, the undertaking of coordination has been unsuccessful. That being said, who doesn’t love a great bull riding event? We invite you as a board to come out and attend as exhibitors, spectators or by providing assistance with marshalling of the event. Any and all participation is truly appreciated. The MLA Sale which takes place on December 4th at Triple R Limousin will feature service and get to some of the industry’s leading genetics. This will be managed by Bohrson Marketing. Feel free to contact them for further inspection of the powerful cows, bred heifers and show heifer prospects that will be available. Thankfully, the rain came to the Northern part of our province in the second week of July, blessed us with its presence for a month and eased the minds of all producers of this region. The Southern half enjoyed plentiful rains and the appearance of a bountiful hay harvest. Those that were spared of the extreme weather patterns and frightening presence of shear winds and tornados. Anyone touched by these is certainly held close to our hearts. Presently most people have had a successful and early harvest judging by the number of cleared fields discovered in my travels. The absence of early frost and the stable fall temperatures is truly a God send. I wish to extend thoughts and prayers to the farmers and ranchers of parts of British Columba, Alberta and Saskatchewan that have struggled with the intensity and vastness of this drought. In closing I would like to say a few words in support of our CLA staff. It appears the Digital Beef program has come with some challenges. This is to be expected with transitions into unfamiliar software. I too have struggled with this program and the staff has walked me through it with skill, especially seeing that they are in a ‘learn as you go’ process also. With the arrival of the new animal welfare act, food production becomes a concern for millions of consumers and their curiosity regarding the conditions under which the animals are raised. One of the most beautiful farms in Nova Scotia was host for the Maritime Limousin Association’s annual meeting and Junior show on September 12th and 13th. Joe and Carolyn Cooper’s Balamore Farms is 1,000 acres located on the Bay of Fundy shore in Great Village. They produce strawberry nursery stock, perennials, and have the largest herd of Limousin cattle in Atlantic Canada. They outdid themselves preparing for the event, and it showed in how smoothly the weekend went. We were pleased that Martin and Donna Bohrson were able to travel from Hanley, Saskatchewan so Martin could act as our judge for the weekend. It was also a great opportunity for us to meet our new general manager for the CLA, Tessa Verbeek. Association president John-Calvin Siddall chaired the junior show and it was an outstanding showcase of cattle and juniors. Five different Limousin operations provided animals so that 29 juniors could participate. Most of the junior exhibitors were also 4-H members, and most of the juniors were working with their 4-H animals.
whom would not have had the opportunity to participate in livestock projects without their support. Scott Dixon acted as auctioneer for an auction in support of the juniors. Semen from a number of operations sold, including operations from outside the Maritimes, Paynes, Jones Cattle, Top Meadow Farms and Rail Line Farms. As well, Manfred Zillig and Lois Brown of Lindencrest Farms donated partial proceeds from the sale of Lindencrest Anna and her bull calf to support the Junior Show. Two breeders, King Limousin and Blue Diamond Limousin teamed up to purchase the Richmond Wyoming daughter. The annual meeting saw the current board remain, with consensus to concentrate our efforts in supporting our juniors. The directors will also explore if there is sufficient interest to host a female sale in 2016, perhaps as part of Balamore’s annual bull sale in March. We had juniors from the 3 Maritime provinces participate. With a score of 89, Bryce Cleveland, Sam Mills, Emily Ross and Mackenzie Thorne won the fitting contest. Brandon Smith was named Grand Champion Showman while Jesse Thorne won the Reserve Showmanship spot. The team of William Cooper and Amber Lloyd nailed the Judging award with a score of 96 points and Megan Wynn won the photography section. The Grand Champion Male ribbon went to Othberg’s Chad, a Richmond Yak son shown by Gabrielle Cleveland, while Balamore Cracker Jack, a ROMN Yippi Ki Yeh son shown by Sydney Patton won the Reserve. The Grand Champion Female award went to a CFIX Wild Card daughter owned and exhibited by William Copper of East Coast Limousin, RPY Paynes Blossom. The Reserve Female spot went to a Richmond Wyatt daughter owned by Balamore Farm and shown that day by Alex Smith. The overall aggregate prize, a belt buckle, went to William Cooper of East Coast Limousin, with an outstanding score of 92.1, while Megan Wynn won the Reserve Aggregate score with an 82.4. Along with the awards handed out to the juniors, a special presentation was made to Manfred Zillig and Lois Brown, owners of Lindencrest Farms. Biography: Dr. Colin Palmer is an Associate Professor of Theriogenology (Animal Reproduction) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Originally from Nova Scotia, Dr. Palmer worked in mixed practices in Ontario and British Columbia and has owned/operated a practice in Saskatchewan. Dr. Palmer along with his wife Kim and children Lauren, Emily and Carter run a herd of purebred Red Angus cattle under the KC Cattle Co. name.
Pinkeye Just like every other cattle producer out there it seems that I have to deal with my own share of doctoring from time to time. This year my problem is pinkeye which I now have dubbed “Pinkeye the New Old Problem.” In nearly 20 years of raising cattle on the prairies I have not had one single case in my own herd. Sure it is something we regularly see in veterinary practice, but probably because of my apparent good fortune I began to believe it was a problem limited mainly to whited face cattle. I guess that is not entirely true since I have Angus cattle. Pinkeye, or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) as it is named in the literature, is the most common eye disease of cattle. Medical terms are always descriptive and really don’t need to be scary. Infectious means what it says – a bacteria, virus, fungus, parasite is the cause, and “itis” tacked on to the end of a word always means inflammation. Keratitis refers to inflammation of the cornea or clear surface of the eyeball and conjunctivitis refers to inflammation of the pink (conjunctival) tissue around the eyeball. Inflammation of both tissues equals keratoconjunctivitis. The veterinary literature frequently states that pinkeye occurs most commonly in Hereford or Hereford-cross cattle, but all breeds can be affected. The most widely accepted cause is a bacteria called Moraxella bovis (M. bovis) which possesses the ability to attach to the surface of the eye after which it releases a toxin that damages corneal cells. Cell damage on the cornea ultimately gives way to, slow-healing, painful surface ulcers. Mycoplasma, chlamydia and infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) have also been implicated. Many times these other bugs serve to assist M. bovis by enabling its colonization and spread; however, they are also capable of producing ocular disease on their own. Another bacteria, Moraxella bovoculi, was recently discovered in bacterial cultures from the eyes of calves with pinkeye, but so far it appears that it may only be incidental or play a supportive role to M. bovis. Both M. bovis and M. bovoculi can be cultured from otherwise normal healthy eyes providing proof that our understanding of what tips the scales toward the development of full-blown disease is far from complete. A number of external factors have been implicated including ultraviolet radiation, dust, and sharp plant leaves/plant awns. Moraxella bovis has adapted to living on and in flies. Flies irritating the eyes are without a doubt one of the most important causal factors with the ability to spread the disease rapidly throughout the herd. It is also very likely that certain strains of M. bovis are more likely to cause disease than others; therefore, mixing of animals from different sources may expose seemingly resistant cattle to an indefensible challenge. The immune system is capable of mounting a protective response to M. bovis and commercial vaccines have been available for some time. Maxi/Guard® and Pinkeye Shield® are examples both requiring an initial shot and a
booster. Other products, or these same products under different names may be available in other countries. Vaccination is not considered to be 100 percent effective, but may be very helpful in a herd situation to limit the number of new cases. One of my practitioner friends says that she has found vaccination to be very helpful in herds dealing with an outbreak as it will dramatically decrease the number of new cases. Your plan of attack should be to treat the clinical cases with antibiotic and then vaccinate the rest of the herd. Vaccination will do nothing for the animals with disease. Following an outbreak there should be some level of herd immunity, but the duration of protection is probably shortlived - less than a year. Mixing cattle, especially young ones, or a herd that has never experienced pinkeye with diseased cattle will most certainly result in problems. Classic cases of pinkeye include corneal edema expressed as the typical blue-gray opacity and ulceration. Excessive tearing, squinting and swelling of tissue may be all that is present with very early cases and are the first signs to disappear during recovery. Without treatment, opacity and ulceration develop in as little as 1 or 2 days and will require several weeks to months to completely heal. Severe cases of pinkeye should not be ignored as swelling in combination with a weakened corneal surface can lead to rupture of the eyeball and permanent blindness. Healing eyes continue to look nasty for several weeks, but you will know that it is getting better because of the absence of tearing and squinting. The red lines on the cornea represent the ingrowth of blood vessels as the cornea heals. Once the cornea clears the affected animal will regain limited vision in that eye. Nasty corneal scars are generally permanent. A number of treatment options are available. Topical penicillin or penicillin carefully injected into the side of the eyeball or swollen eyelid tissue can provide adequate levels of drug in the tear fluid. Injected drugs tend to maintain higher concentrations of drug for longer than topical applications. Oil based, topical penicillin treatments, for example mastitis preparations, persist longer than the aqueous product. If injecting penicillin or applying oil based penicillin preparations then treatment should be repeated every two days. Tilmicosin (Micotil®) subcutaneous or oxytetracycline intramuscularly, or preferably subcutaneously, have both been shown to shorten the clinical course of disease and decreased M.bovis spread to susceptible herd mates. When treating animals it is a good idea to employ some sort of fly control - Boss®or Cylence® pouron products are great for treating the individual animal with a duration of at least 2 weeks. Eye protecting patches can decrease fly infestation and protect the eye from irritating sun light, but leave the bottom open to allow the discharge to drain.

The Canadian Limousin Association (CLA) Annual General Meeting was held August 8, 2015 in Stratford, Ontario in conjunction with the CJLA Impact Show. The AGM was well attended and many topics of interest to CLA members were covered.
judged by long-time Limousin breeder Gary Anderson and was broadcast over the internet. The sale was held by Bohrson Marketing and was one of the highest averaging sales among the breeds. This year the National Show & Sale is being held at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Ontario.
Brian Lee gave his final President’s Report, as his six year term came to a close at this AGM. Treasurer Bill Zwambag gave the Financial Review Engagement Report in which overall the CLA’s financial situation remains consistent, with a slight decrease in registries being offset by more efficient spending and savings in some areas.
As there was no official Breed Improvement Committee this past year, I gave a brief report on the main topics in that area including the new registry system, Digital Beef; the multi breed genetic evaluations; our new genetic evaluation consultant, Dr. Robert Weaber of Kansas; my continuation (in Anne BrunetBurgess’ place) on the NALF performance committee; and the Livestock Gentec Conference held in Edmonton in October. I also reported on the many things that have happened at the CLA this past year. The new website was launched in the spring with many of the same features as the previous website but a refreshed and current appearance. Many international visitors came to tour Limousin herds this past year and the CLA looks forward to broadening our international connections at the International Limousin Congress (ILC) 2016 which will be held in Ireland in August 2016. I was pleased to report that the CLA will continue to receive funding for market development endeavours from the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC). The CLA continues to sponsor the Livestock Markets Association of Canada Auctioneer Championship and TBar Invitational Golf Tournament. This year CLA will also be sponsoring the Livestock Gentec Field Day (August) and Annual Conference (October) as a speaker at the conference has done work with the British Limousin Cattle Society.
Tim Andrew, chair of the Commercial Committee, reported that the Limousin branded CCIA tag program has been exceeding initial expectations in terms of sales and continues to grow. The inaugural CLA Cattlemen’s Evening was held on the Thursday evening prior to the AGM and was a well-attended event that brought together purebred breeders, commercial producers, feedlots, and packers for a steak dinner, guest speakers, and networking. The Commercial Committee plans to make this type of gathering an annual event in conjunction with the CLA AGM. Producers are reminded to take advantage of the complementary commercial Limousin calf listing service on the CLA website, and promote this marketing tool to their bull buyers. Eric Boon, CJLA Adult Advisor thanked Wayne Lawrence and his committee for organizing the junior show in Stratford this year. Last year the CJLA National Conference was in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and this coming year the show will be returning to the west to be held in Alberta in 2016. The location and dates are yet to be officially announced. The CJLA awarded five juniors with $250 scholarships last year. As of 2015, the CJLA will be offering two (2) $500 scholarships and two (2) $250 scholarships going forward. Venture Livestock donated $500 towards CJLA scholarships. Lynn and Tyra Combest will also be donating a heifer to be sold through their November herd dispersal to the CJLA. One of the most exciting upcoming opportunities for CJLA members is the Australian/Canadian Youth Exchange which will allow one CJLA member age 16-21 to travel to Australia for four weeks during a major Australian cattle show and receive $2,000 from the CJLA for expenses. Australia will also be sending students to Canada for the same opportunity in November each year. More information and an application form will be posted on the CLA website soon. The CJLA held their AGM in Stratford as well and elected a new board of directors. The CJLA will be having a face-to-face meeting in Calgary in December following the CLA Board of Directors December meeting.
We continue to publish an ad in the Canadian Cattlemen Magazine on a co-op basis with operations wishing to be involved and provincial associations are reminded that they are welcome to utilize our ads to suit their own needs, please contact me to inquire about this. Last but certainly not least, the CLA has decided to eliminate the summer issue of the Limousin Voice magazine, bringing it to three issues per year with slightly changed deadlines and rates. The Limousin Voice will now be mailed commercially, increasing the readership substantially. Two new and one returning board members were elected to the CLA Board of Directors by acclamation. Matthew Heleniak of Norwich, Ontario was elected to the board. Matthew and his young family operate Hawkeye Land and Cattle, in addition to playing an integral role in his family’s successful processing
The National Show was held at Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, Saskatchewan in 2014. Terry Hepper, the National Show and Sale Committee Chair, reported that participants from five provinces brought cattle, resulting in over 140 head, which was the largest breed show they have had in years. facility, Norpac Beef, where largely Limousin animals are butchered. Also elected to the board was Mark Angus of Roblin, Manitoba who operates Jaymarandy Limousin alongside his family. Returning to the board for a second three year term is Tim Andrew of Youngstown, Alberta. Tim and his family operate Andrew Ranches where they run a large Limousin herd. Brian Lee of Janetville, Ontario bid farewell to the CLA Board of Directors this year after a highly successful six year term. Richard Renaud of Huntingdon, Quebec also left the board after one year. The CLA thanks both of these gentlemen for their contributions to the board. In new business, the Ontario Limousin Association presented a topic for discussion in regards to the Canadian Limousin Association and Ontario Limousin Association (and other provinces) amalgamating their fee structures to perhaps include a provincial levy. Discussion ensued, but no motion or vote took place, as the OLA would have had to give written notice of a proposed amendment to the CLA by-laws sixty days in advance of the AGM. The AGM concluded with presentations made to past CLA General Manager Anne Brunet-Burgess to thank her for her years of work for the CLA, as well as to Brian and Holli Lee for their dedication to the CLA Board. The CLA Board also surprised me with a lovely framed print to welcome me to the CLA and as a wedding gift for my husband Colin and I as we were married in July. The 2016 CLA AGM will take place in Alberta. The date and location will be announced soon.

How and When to Change Vaccine Lines By Roy Lewis DVM There are many difficult decisions to be made when changing the brand or manufacturer of a vaccine line. Hopefully this article will clarify how to go about the decision and avoid any gaps or overlaps that could develop if the right combinations are not chosen. The real comparisons can be made when you know what specific diseases you need to vaccinate for in your herd, whether you use a modified live, killed or combined program and how efficacious (effective) you think your program was originally. This will help you and your herd veterinarian determine where to come in with different products. This is all assuming the previous vaccines were purchased, stored, handled, administered properly and timely in the past to all necessary cattle in your herd. If you do purchase your vaccination supplies from your herd health veterinarian and they are changing lines it could be for several reasons, only one of which might be the efficacy of the product. Other reasons are availability, cost, dosage formulation, number of doses per bottle and even service provided by the pharmaceutical company. I have known clinics changing trade names simply based on route of administration. If two vaccines are equal and one is approved to give subcutaneously, that may be a more desirable route and supports “Beef Quality Assurance”. Sometimes newer products may have a broader range of bacteria or viruses it protects against making them more desirable and vaccines that provide greater protection in fewer shots may be more desirable as well. More shots simply mean more labor and stress (another needle poke) on the calves. The intranasal route eliminates the needle but may have a shorter duration. These are all decisions you and your veterinarian need to make. Knowing which vaccines do what requires essentially reading the fine print and you will find most pharmaceutical companies have pretty good spread sheets indicating which vaccines protect against which diseases. We must pay close attention as vaccines can be very close in protection yet one organism’s protection may be missing. This is where it’s best to consult with your veterinarian in case there are any differences in coverage. Once one has determined that all the diseases are the same, then there is the question of whether you can carry on boosting the same way you have in the past. Just because you have changed vaccines does not necessarily mean you need to start a vaccine program all over again. In fact the opposite is the case. Vaccines in general stimulate the body to produce antibodies or protection against that specific disease. If you then come in with a different
vaccine as long as immunity is there and the diseases are the same in the new vaccine it should booster the previous vaccine response. This is much the same principal as if a natural viral infection came through, it would essentially stimulate the immune system the same way. You need to follow label directions and if the previous vaccination program has worked well and you trust the protection it is giving then bolstering with a comparable product should work fine. My only caution is if killed vaccines were previously given that boostering was done at the recommended label and then modified live vaccines or different killed products can be followed up with. My personal preference is using modified live vaccines for the longer duration of immunity, but some vaccines such as the footrot vaccine only come as a killed product. Starting over anew may be recommended in several instances such as the acquisition of new stock with a sketchy vaccination history or if a year has been missed meaning now it is two years between vaccinations. If potentially vaccinations were missed such as escaping from the chute, dosage was not calculated or automatic syringes were not working properly: all these and other reasons I have missed may be justification to starting the vaccination program all over again. If an additional organism (virus or bacteria) has been added into the program, it is highly likely it will need to be boostered the first time. The bottom-line is, if you are changing vaccines and your previous one gave protection and all the antigens (organisms) are the same, you should be protected with using the new vaccine. If new protection has been added it may need to be boostered but these are all good questions to pose to your veterinarian so gaps are not created in the new vaccination program. As we all know, vaccination is commonplace and it is far better to prevent disease than treat it. It also allows more savings in cost of using antimicrobials as well as sparing usage does not allow antimicrobial resistance to build up as quickly. All good reasons to work with your veterinarian yearly on the most updated, least stressful most comprehensive and efficacious vaccination program necessary for your particular farm and management style. Pharmaceutical companies will continue to improve vaccines making them more efficacious, broad spectrum and less reactive coupled with in some cases easier means of administration. The future looks promising to use vaccination to improve the health of our cattle herds and reduce antimicrobial usage.

Promoter of the Breed Chaffe Farms

“We like feeding the Limousin breed for its carcass traits,” Chaffe reports, mentioning these traits assist in marketing the animals. “Their performance is good in the feedlot.” It’s these results that prompt him to predict continued success and growth in the breed’s future. “I think the Limousin breed has room to grow, more as a crossbred animal,” he explains. “I think getting some of the proper bulls into (commercial) herds for crossbreeding … is going to be very important for the Limousin breed, just so we can get those carcass traits into our feedlots and the higher yielding cattle to market them.”
At an intriguing time in the Canadian beef industry, hearing a feedlot operator speak about the high prices of the past year is informative and a different take than that of the average producer. “It’s been a good year, but at the same time we’ve ended up with a lot more money invested in the feedlot and the bottom line. You’re still working on your margin,” says Jack Chaffe. “Right now the prices of fed cattle are under some pressure, so it looks like we’re in the red for a little bit, taking a loss on some of these cattle.” Chaffe, along with his wife, Diane, and their sons, Owen, Evan and Curtis, run Chaffe Farms, a feedlot at Mitchell, Ontario.
Pursuing a career in the cattle business was a choice that came naturally to Chaffe, who grew up working on this operation with his family and appreciating what it had to offer. “It’s a great way of life. I’ve always enjoyed working with cattle, and I grew up with cattle, being involved in buying, selling, feeding, the day-to-day work,” he says. “When you consider it’s not really work when you’re working with them — it’s enjoyment.” Chaffe considers a new addition to their operation’s infrastructure to be his most significant career achievement to date.
“We’re marketing about 2,000 cattle a year into the Ontario Corn-Fed Beef Program. It’s a family-run operation, starting into the fifth generation,” Chaffe explains. He and his brother, Joe, are the owners. Owen, his eldest son, works with them full time; Evan, who is still in high school, is a part-time employee. The family is a strong supporter of the Limousin breed; a quarter of the cattle in their feedlot are Limousin and Limousin influence. The Chaffes are impressed with how these genetics improve the quality of the feeder cattle they obtain.

Given his perspective from his position in the beef supply chain, Chaffe mentions that the strong market has a downside when producers consider herd expansion. “Likely the biggest, if you want to expand or grow, is availability of cash flow to do it,” he offers. “The same with the feedlot — if you want to increase your numbers in the feedlot and buy more cattle, it’s that availability of money from the lenders is limited.” “Last year we built a new barn, which took in a lot of the new technologies over the last 15 years, and we did a lot of the work ourselves,” he says proudly. “We’re very happy with the performance of the cattle coming out of there. The cattle are very content and performance is excellent, so out of the last 15 years that’s likely one of the biggest accomplishments here.” New technology, he continues, is also the key to keeping more young people engaged in the beef industry, thus leading them to pursue related careers.
On the other hand; however, he sees the ample opportunity for growth in this market to be the greatest strength of the Canadian beef industry currently. “Our export markets have been very strong the last 18 months, moving beef into Japan, China, the Middle East, and if that continues we’ve got room here to grow,” he predicts. “I can see growth in the industry as long as everybody in the chain makes some money.”
“You have to show them that there’s some excitement,” he suggests, noting how youth are often enthusiastic about innovation. “They want to see new technology being involved and used in the industry — or in any industry — so if we can keeping developing new technology in feeding practices or feeding equipment or cattle handling equipment, stuff like that, I think, really interests the next generation.” Speaking of the next generation, Chaffe’s plans for the future of their feedlot will depend on his sons, among other factors. He anticipates things may change in relation to what Evan wants to do after university. “So when he comes home, whether we look at expanding the operation again or what we’re going to do from there, but we’re kind of in a holding pattern here for the next three years,” Chaffe explains. “Other plans will include “(paying) off some bills and (seeing) if there is some growth in the industry.”
