to the 18th Annual Tools of the Trade Bull Sale. Building a cow herd is sometimes compared to piecing together a puzzle. You can search and search for the right piece, find something you think will work on what you are building but when you try to put that piece into place you find its not quite the right fit and have to search some more for the right one. Some puzzles take what seems like a lifetime to build, when building a cowherd, it actually does! 2013 marks our 50th year in the Registered Angus business. Like the puzzle, we have been building our herd piece by piece into what you have before you today. Selecting cow families that meet all of our expectations, sires that will add the appropriate traits that we desire and in the end to have everything gel together to put forward the ideal product that we feel we have for sale today. The Wilbar cowherd has been passed down through 3 generations. Survived many years of trends and fads, times when Angus cattle were discounted at auction markets instead of selling for the premiums they are today. The cattle business changes on a regular basis but our commitment to you remains the same â&#x20AC;&#x201C; to breed cattle that will survive in the harshest environments and produce profitable offspring year after year. As a special addition to our sale, this year we will be offering 20 open heifers from the top of our replacement pen. They are out of proven cow families that will compliment any breeding program. Wilbar Farms ... a half century of building and breeding a superior product for the livestock industry. What can a man say about the breeders who bred “HF Kodiak”...a bull that changed the landscape of the Angus breed? Much ... but I will try to be brief. The Wilbar operation is based on the dedication and accomplishment of three generations. I’m certain that Jake would not have foreseen, that at the time he met Bernice at a skating rink (while schooling at the Canadian Bible College in Regina), that he would turn from minister to cowboy and that the couple would establish one of Canada’s finest Angus breeding operations. In 1954, the Willms family got their first taste of the Angus cow. Hereford was the breed of choice at the time ... the young couple wanted to purchase a package of heifers ... but as their budget was very limited, they had to settle for a group of black cows. The next spring they purchased the Reserve Champion Bull at the Battlefords Bull Sale for $510.00 from Robert Staples. For the next seven years, they ran a straight commercial black herd and although the breed was not popular at the time, Jake got to like the black cattle. In an interview for Angus Advantage, Jake recalled, “We appreciated the simplicity of the breed, the function, fertility and calving ease of the Angus cow and we stayed with them.” In 1962, they purchased their first registered cows and the rest is history. As the two boys (Jud and Dan) grew, so did the cow herd and land base. Both Jud and Dan graduated from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Regina, served time with the force, but both chose to return to agriculture. The children’s experience through 4-H was a big help in promoting and marketing the Wilbar program; a practise exercised by each generation. For over a decade, their large consignment of bulls at the Regina Bull Sale was a feature. Then in 1996, Wilbar joined forces with Bob and Marjorie Blacklock and established the “Tools of the Trade Bull Sale,” which was held annually in Saskatoon. A few years ago, with M Double B” changing their calving cycle, Wilbar moved the sale out to the ranch; with the next generation taking charge ... Bryan and Tom. The accomplishments of family members and the Wilbar herd would take this entire catalogue to document. Even though each generation has sat in an Association president’s chair, it is only fitting to mention that the founders of this great breeding establishment, Jake and Bernice, were truly dedicated Angus enthusiasts volunteering much of what spare time they could afford. Jake served as president provincially and nationally, while Bernice served as the Saskatchewan Angus Association secretary for a decade, in addition to a host of committees on which they served. In 1992, Jake and Bernice received the Saskatchewan Livestock Association Honor Scroll; then in 2006, they were presented the ``Heritage Award`` and in that same year, Wilbar Farms was named ``Purebred Breeder of the Year.” The success of Wilbar did not happen overnight. The bulls and females offered for your inspection are a result of five decades of genetic engineering, by three family generations. The powerful offering of bulls did not come by chance, but rather the result of having an outstanding, predictable cow herd. Over the years, I have found that the Willms family is not afraid of hard work in order to achieve success ... you will find this work ethic in the cattle they sell ... working hard for your success. Honesty, sincerity and customer service are foremost in the Wilbar program. The future bodes well for agriculture, especially in the livestock sector. The next decade will be bullish as North America re-stocks its waning inventories; while Eastern European and Asian countries seek more product. Congratulations to everyone at Wilbar. His sons have highlighted and topped our red bull sale for the last 3 years and will be in the spotlight again this year. Ken & Odile Aiken are third generation ranchers. The centennial farm currently has 350 females with heifers calving in March and cows calving in April-May. We have a commercial herd, primarily Red Angus and Red Angus/Simmental; from which, we retain our ranch-raised heifers as replacements. CERTIFICATE OF REGISTRATION... Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Angus Association.
