Dreaming Is Easy, Achieving Is Difficult by Richard Maguet

Each year, I have the privilege of writing to you about Rendezvous Farms to recognize our accomplishments, to address our challenges and to share with you our outlook for the future. One of the genuine pleasures I get from writing a new piece about Rendezvous is that I am literally revisiting the entire farming enterprise that I knew from so many years or more back.

I call it Rendezvous’s One-Stop-Convenience-Bull-Store. Friends, few Simmental breeders in Canada can offer at public auction so many ‘yearlings-only’ Simmental bulls. Our Reds, Blacks and Fullblood bulls are deeply-rooted in single calendar year growth and thickness type. Consequently, Rendezvous Farms has become this province’s largest supplier of pedigreed Simmental bulls.

And each year, I am more excited about the pace and scale of change that we at Rendezvous Farms are undertaking to fulfill our unwavering focus on raising the very best of Simmentals for our many customers across Canada and the United States Midwest. So what’s going on here at this farm? I guess we are like the sport’s team schedule focusing on the destination, not the journey in achieving our goals of becoming one of the leaders in marketing bulls in this industry.

You will also encounter on sale day a group of 53 prime open heifers ready to breed this spring. Friends, don’t be obsessed with trying to figure out whether a market is making a major bottom, a major top, or about to accelerate its trend. I would argue that such an obsession doesn’t build wealth that is sustained. It’s a subtle form of gambling, and gamblers tend to lose money on an ongoing basis. My thoughts are you don’t make your money when you sell, you make your money when you buy. If you buy anything ‘right’ you have a very good chance at future financial gains. Just bring some of our bulls and females back home to your farms. This would make great sense or better yet I’d congratulate you for executive decision-making.

We will always remember the place we started from in this breed 40 years ago and where we wanted to go, but throughout the journey always remembering that ambition must never be a substitute for character. This pedigreed operation had the patience to think long-term. By this thinking, I believe we became a unique bull selling entity that blended entrepreneurial vitality, unconventional thinking, and operational excellence. Everything happening at Rendezvous Farms is now united by a passionate commitment to success. Our success also lies in earning the trust of our bull and female customers, ensuring that any actions we take to help you reach your goals in obtaining those proper Simmentals for your herds are anchored by our integrity and a shared set of values. For this writer, the ability to do something well and efficiently requires discipline and a strong focus on the goal. Of course it wouldn’t be fair to my readers that I write only about the better happenings at this farm without mentioning that yes, we’ve had some washouts, but in those cases we quickly implemented positive plans-to-action.

For United States cattlemen we are aiming to be your preferred Canadian Simmental partner, valued for providing you exceptional customer experience. Our Rendezvous brand strength enables us to offer to you ample numbers of pedigreed Simmentals to choose from. We believe that we are also uniquely positioned among our competitors for being able to export easily to your country and then deliver near to your farms your chosen lots. Our talented sales team and dedicated owners will execute our export strategy with excellence. We will work hard with any American to identify suitable opportunities to help you spot and purchase our Simmentals with trust and reliability. Another extra, Rendezvous Farms is also in the promise-keeping business. Lastly, this is not meant to be a fashion statement but check out the hair coats of our sale animals. Selecting for a phenotypic hair trait is very important for us when selecting our own herd bulls. In cold and unrelenting winter climates, it’s easy to understand why.

Our mature herd consisting of some 300 pedigreed Simmental females is constantly on the move having grown substantially from within. Fitting all these puzzle pieces together to originate and develop a purebred livestock herd worthy of respect is an art that only comes through decades of actual real-world pedigreed knowledge. Keep in mind none of us here at Rendezvous are reading from tablets we dragged down the mountain. Sufficiently forward-thinking fresh ideas linked with David & Gerald’s swift understanding of the pedigreed world is obviously central to this success.

The full sales management team we employ is the trusted Transcon Livestock Corp. of Alberta. I’ve known Jay Good for many years both in his role as owner of Transcon Livestock and as a personal friend. Text or call anyone from Transcon today and you will receive an arena of ideas that will be truthful but refreshing about any of our cataloged lots that you may wish to inquire about. Jay Good and his staff are the kind of people who will exhaust themselves in sharing with you their strategic thought processes that just may make that difference in selecting the proper bulls for your farming operations, that stands to multiply your calves weaning weights and earn you fortunes. Likewise for all our replacement females on offer. With their ceaseless fountains of opinions and analysis, these professional pedigreed livestock order buyers, eyes focused forward can do your selecting, bidding and buying on anyone’s behalf, all at no cost to you. What I have said for years, and it’s certainly true in this case, I would take a good purebred sale manager’s advice over a trained scientist if I couldn’t find someone who offered both. With Transcon Livestocks’ willingness to offer you unvarnished assessments of our pedigreed cattle on offer alongside such vast market expertise available, why would you deny yourselves the benefit of their wisdom come sale day at Rendezvous?

Our grain and pedigreed livestock operation is situated in Ste Rose du Lac, the official Cattle Capital of Manitoba. Pedigreed livestock operations take years to establish and mature, a lesson I learned as a very young boy while growing up on this family farm. My loving parents, Laurent and Lorraine the founders of Rendezvous Farms taught me early on that the best harvests come only after years of thoughtful planning, planting, and nurturing. Ah, so true. As pedigreed breeders we must also be durable in time with the potential to endure for decades while never losing sight of the reason we are here: to constantly developing better genetics to serve our customers and of course, to earn a fair profit for ourselves. David and Gerald inherited the Maguet family’s agricultural passion, coupled with creativity on display, getting big projects started and then quickly getting those projects completed. David’s successful planned matings at Rendezvous are to some extent like inventions, but I say to invent you have to experiment but if you know in advance that it’s going to work, it is not an experiment.

To everyone, you are all invited to join us early on Holiday-Monday, February 19th at the Ste Rose Auction Mart lunchroom for complimentary dining and refreshments. In closing, we know that we don’t hold all of the answers but whether you choose to interact with us in person, on the phone, by text, or e-mail, Rendezvous Farms is here to help you in any way we can.

For us, pedigreed livestock, customer-service and marketing are not ends in themselves. We measure our pedigreed efforts by the success our customers enjoy and the advocacy they exhibit. We are succeeding because they are succeeding and that is powering our growth, thus extending our leadership position of selling Simmental bulls.

Contact my sons David and Gerald or any of our sales staff for anything you may wish to discuss. Our bull sale starts at 1 pm and not a minute late.

Rendezvous has complete trust and confidence in using in its herds only its own walking herdbulls and no AI. Why is that? Well, for the love of all things good and holy, we take herdbull buying seriously. Blacks, Reds, Fullbloods and Heifer Bull herdsires of exceptional quality are sought-after and often purchased for very high dollar amounts. To that end, once purchased, those herdsires are heavily used, therefore canceling the need to use AI or someone else’s high selling bull of a yesterday sale.

Thank-you for the privilege of your business. You are the reason we stand strong. It’s been years since I’ve been writing this opinion-editorial in Rendezvous’ Annual Bull Sale magazines. This will be my last. Someone else is ready to take over therefore I shall step aside. Thank-you for having shared your time with me. May God Bless everyone.

In our bull pens you will find a buffet of options to choose from.

Richard

Sales Management Comments The herdbull battery at Rendezvous Farms have really proven their self worth this year. This is a constant “work in progress” as the search for new bulls never ends at Rendezvous Farms. The FB section has a bittersweet feel with this being the last sons of “Nero” to sell. Walk proud “Nero” as he has left what may be his strongest group ever, his best effort as his finale! Conversely, the first sons of the $75,000 “Charles” are here and he looks to be worth every penny!  The “Charles” sons will be easy to find with their attractive dark red colour, the deep sides, thick tops, big hips and well endowed testicular development.  Moving to the Red Simmi bulls, there are some wonderful performance bulls by “Mandako” and “Red Express”.  Just true beef bulls sired by these two that can be used with so much versatility to generate cold hard cash for the commercial cattlemen. Flanking them in this group are a large selection of calving ease specialists in the “Rambo” and “Red Caesar” fraternities. This would be one of the largest groups of Red Simmental calving ease bulls to sell anywhere! The Black Simmental herd is the newest division at Rendezvous Farms but you wouldn’t know it from the comparable quality that exist to the Fullboood and Red Simmental groups. As a matter of fact, the “Western Star” sons are some of the highest gaining, performance driven bulls in the whole offering. Joining them in a soft made moderate package are the sons of “LFE Powershift” whom you will appreciate for their shape and balance.  Once again the opportunity to advance your own replacement heifer pen will be given following the bull sale portion when 50’ish Rendezvous females will be auctioned.  These females have gone on to work well for their new owners in the past and why wouldn’t they when they are created from this wonderful cowherd.   This is not only one of Manitoba’s top Simmental sales and breeding programs, but the Rendezvous name and annual bull and female sale are very notable on a national and continental level.  We strongly encourage you to attend this event held in the “Cattle Capital of Manitoba” and look seriously to advance your own breeding program through their efforts. In the event you cannot attend but need bidding assistance, please call our cell phones listed for professional absentee buyer services. We have successfully placed many head of Rendezvous Simmental cattle to their new, very satisfied owners.  For the Maguet Families,

The fact that he’s a Polled Fullblood meat machine may be part of the reason. We selected Nero at LaBatte’s in 2011, where he was our pick of the Fullblood bulls that year. A long, smooth made, easy fleshing bull, that’s low set and deep bodied. Nero is extremely well filled in the flank area and travels quite smoothly. Add all of the above plus a pedigree that’s Pictured October 2015, just shy of 6 years old second to none, and it’s no wonder that this bull is doing things right. Nero has taken our Fullblood program by storm, his sons averaged $9375 in our 2014 sale & $9083 in our 2015 sale. This bull is definitely one of the very best Polled Fullblood bulls to walk in North America & has impressed all visitors at the farm. Buy with confidence in his progeny.  This will be the last set of sons to sell from Nero.

After the first five calves were born, we knew that Caesar 584 would become a permanent fixture at the ranch. A good herd bull always breeds better than himself, point in case is with this Caesar line. Every generation seems to impress us more and more. The calves from Caesar 584 are small at birth, but turn into curve bending growth machines. When touring people in the herd sire pasture, a lot of folks seem to gravitate towards this young herd sire. To make things even better, Caesar 584 is also Homo Polled.

Homo Polled. Seldom have we seen a bull with so much depth of body as what Trigger displays. A naturally easy keeping, fleshy type bull, we’ve worked him hard since we’ve owned him and yet every fall he’s in tip top condition. Trigger was the lead off and high selling bull at the Herdmaster’s 2012 Bull Sale where we purchased Pictured August 2015, 4.5 years old him for $26,000. Glen Maxwell stated that this was the best red bull they had raised and coming from Glen, we don’t take that lightly. Trigger’s style, thickness, flesh and body frame is what we’ve been looking for. Homozygous polled as well, we’ve had numerous offers from semen companies and individuals to purchase semen or shares in Trigger. HIs progeny have proven themselves to be the right kind of cattle. Seize the opportunity to own Trigger’s last set of daughters and sons to sell.

We’re quite excited with Red Express! He was the lead off bull at Herdmasters 2013. Doug Zimmer had nothing but praise for his mother, especially since Red Express was her first calf. Express was truly one of the thickest, deepest bodied bulls we saw in the spring of 2013. This stout made bull is an impressive individual, one of the only yearling bulls we’ve used that never lost any condition during breeding season. His super dark red color is something he passes on to his progeny as well. The combination of length, thickness & middle to this herd sire is something that blends nicely. His calves are born small & easy, they then keep growing & performing well. We believe Red Express will have a bright future here at RF. Look over his sons & daughters, you will like them too!

Mothered by a black Powerline first calf daughter, Terry & Debbie Skoretz felt he would calve well & also give the kind of performance we were looking for from our heifers. Not one single calf of his was assisted at birth & man do they look good a year later. Red Knight travels like a hovercraft, smooth & steady. His muscle expression is impressive & he is developing into a well-balanced, smooth made herdsire. Red Knights has really stepped up to the plate and has surpassed all our expectations in every domain. Perhaps our most ‘undiscovered’ herdsire we use.

He was a foot longer than any other bull around and weighed 1620 at 14 months. This goes Pictured September 2017 at 3 years of age back to the old adage: Length = pounds. Solid footed & light on his feet, Western Star has seen heavy service in our black program. When his calves were being born, Gerry felt they were the nicest, most uniform calves he would process at 2 days of age. They were sooo long & correct. Flash forward 13 months & these calves are very impressive yearlings. Be sure to check them out. They will add a lot to anyone’s program.

We look forward to having more Hemi calves this year.

Charles was bred by the wonderful people at Lockhart Valley Simmentals, Rimbey, AB. Lee, Tina & Hanna Robson toured us around their farm & made sure to show us the dam of this great bull. After only a few minutes of viewing both “mother & son”, my wife Rachelle & I knew that we had to own Charles, there was no other alternative. We also knew there would be some very strong competition in doing so. When the dust settled, we managed to purchase him outright for a ground breaking $75,000! We felt we needed to add this powerful, perfectly made, genetically unique individual to our herdbull roster for our customers as we know too well that trying to find that ideal individual in the Fullblood business is a very, very tough job. In all honesty, I’ve never been so excited about a bull as the day we saw Charles & that feeling has continued every single day, especially watching his first calf crop develop & now being offered in our sale.

We feel Patriot encompasses the similar calving ease traits of his well known brother but also adds a lot of length & growth to his calves all the while maintaining that moderate frame score with good thickness. Patriot is a prime example of purchasing a good bull even though we were “bulled up” at the time. We really liked the structure of him as a yearling & when Dad (Richard) & I saw the cow family when touring the Kuntz herd we both felt we should add this bull to the battery on those merits as that kind of bull doesn’t come around every year. We’re quite enthused about these Patriot sons selling, they are very uniform in type and most of them were raised by only second calvers.

HOMO POLLED A performance packed homo polled bull with a very unique pedigree for a black bull. These Western Star sons have proven to be exceptionally popular with the commercial cattlemen for a reason; they all have that extra length that we all search for. Cowboy arithmetic is quite simple -- that extra length turns into a lot more pounds when the calves go through the sales ring, which translates into substantially more money at the end of the day. 65E was born easily at 90lbs & then never stopped growing; his weaning weight was an impressive 1030lbs. Siblings to 65E have gone into the herds of Triangle 33 Simmentals, SK & Lochwood Simmentals, MB respectively.

I don’t think you’ll find longer black bulls in the business than these Western Star sons, as they seem to all have that extra rib. The dam of this bull is a moderate made cow we purchased from Bonchuk’s a number of years ago. Herself being sired by Red Rock is the icing on the cake from a genetic stand point. The only other son this cow has raised has gone into Earl Warkentin’s herd out in Grandview.

From every angle he stands correct & is square on all four feet. Also worth mentioning is his perfectly symmetrical blaze on his head. We have a full sister as a bred heifer & she is one of the sweetest blazed blacks we have. Wowzers, that’s a feat that not many bulls ever achieve. Yet pay attention to his bone size. He is just right in our mind & isn’t a framey individual either. Just all around well built. An easy keeping 2 generation blaze faced bull. Good feet & bone structure, thick hind quarters & that wide top which is quickly becoming a Powershift signature. The mother of this bull has a perfect udder & excellent feet. For a 12 year old cow she hardly looks 6. She’s also had a very strong production track record. Last year’s blaze faced son went sight unseen to Teren & Amber Garlinski of Grandview, MB. The year before she had a feature daughter who was our high seller at $8000 to the great purebred herd of Swan Lake Farms, SK. The years prior to that she produced sons who went to Paul & JoAnn Hill, SK; Bernard Sobie, MB, Corey Desrochers, MB, the Browns of ND & Ron Jarvis, MB.

The best of both worlds comes into play with 67E, the combination of a black father with a Fullblood cow makes this 50% black Fleck bull a very good option to add into anyone’s Angus herd. These blaze faced bulls are always popular & give the order buyers that confidence to bid a little more since they know those steers are Simmental influenced. We have two sisters in our own herd and brothers to 67E are working in the good commercial herds of Barland Holdings of Winnipeg & Aaron Schmidt’s of Plumas.

Super thick butted, exceptionally easy keeping, his natural fleshing ability is impressive to say the least. Long bodied, low to the ground & super deep, I could go on & on about this guy as we are very high on him. The dam of this bull is much the same, she’s always fat & could be showcased at any given time. A good milking Icon mother is pretty neat since you won’t find much of that bloodline in any black cattle. 595E weaned off his mother at 1050lbs in mid September. We typically breed the mother of this bull to the Nero bull however she repeated & ended up being bred by Mandako. Well this turned out to be as good of a deal at the end of the day. Believe it or not but this guy is in fact our youngest bull of the entire offering! Yet he stacks right up with the big boys born in January. The more time goes on the more I’m really in awe about how good this bull really is. Look at his rib expression. He’s got girth like a barrel & he stands square with all four legs properly placed underneath him. Thick as a slab of butter, he will sire some outstanding pens of steers. You’ll want to keep all the daughters from this bull as his mother always cranks out the good ones as it’s easy to see with 704E. Brothers to this bull have gone to the high end programs of Moose Creek Red Angus & Belle Plaine Colony both of Saskatchewan.

They calve like a dream; we’ve never used him on heifers however I’m confident he would work. This particular son is a real humdinger, long bodied, deep ribbed with loads of capacity and very good feet. Be sure to have a good long look at this guy. I just can’t say enough good things about how much the Red Express bull has done for our program & for everyone who’s acquired a son or daughter. This particular bull is full of length, size & dimension. The beauty with these Express cattle is their natural ability to be curve benders, calve easily & then take off & grow like a bumper corn crop. Here’s an interesting son from our old Caesar sire who’s become somewhat of a legend in this area. One of the most common comments heard when delivering bulls is how well a customer’s Caesar son has done for them. It’s a rewarding feeling hearing such positive feedback from a home raised sire. 306E is a lighter coloured bull who would cross well on some Char influenced cattle to produce some of those popular buck skins.

A corral favourite among all who’ve walked thru the bull pen this year, including ourselves. 74E is perhaps the longest bull in the entire offering & since we are known for producing longer than average cattle, this is no understatement! Length translates into pounds & this bull will breed the same way. Smooth made & not heavy boned - just like all Charles sons - this bull is hard to fault. The dam of this bull is a beautiful pear shaped female whose sire was a bull we owned for a few years & later sold to Kris Martin of Swan River. We used the Charles bull heavily as a yearling & he managed to breed 30 cows naturally, therefore we have a few younger calves because of that. However at the rate this guy is growing you’d never know he’s March born. Dark cherry red with a pretty unique pedigree that would be an outcross to a lot of today’s Fullbloods makes this bull a neat prospect. If you’re wanting to ramp up the weaning weights on your calves look no further than 70E. Sired by the Hemi bull we co-own with Zdan’s, this big brute will get the job done. 70E himself crushed the scale at a whopping 1080lbs right off the cow. Interestingly enough his WW EPD ranks in the top 1% of the breed. We are seeing a trend of many producers going back on their multi-generation red cows with a powerful Fullblood bull making those desirable single cross blaze faced reds that pack a bit more punch. The dam of this bull is a big powerful Jahari cow who could easily live on snowballs all winter. Another son of hers resides at the B&M Morgan Farm’s herd north of Dauphin.

Being a February born bull and weaning off his dam at 1040lbs tells us that there’s some length in this guy to enable those kinds of numbers. The dam of this bull is a front pasture type cow & her cow family has been #1 here for over 3 decades. Last year’s brother was selected by Emile Brunel of North SIDE Farms. Kind of an interesting bull here, a March born son from our legendary Nero bull. This guy sure has the ability to grow & gain weight. He ranks in the top 3% of the breed for his WW EPD. This beauty of a heifer with her symmetrical wrap around goggles is as striking as they get. She will mature to be a very impressive mother cow with unlimited potential.
