Welcome to our 5th Annual Efficiency Verified Genetics Sale. First and foremost, thank you to all our buyers, bidders, and attendees who have supported us over the years. We truly appreciate the trust you place in our program. When you purchase a bull from us, you’re not just buying genetics — you’re joining us in a shared commitment to moving the cattle industry forward.
We believe in using the latest advancements in genetics, nutrition, and data management to continually improve what we do. Our program is built around four key objectives:
1 1 To improve the profitability of those involved in all segments of the beef industry.
2. To identify superior animals that are efficient throughout the production process.
3. To produce high-quality beef that the industry’s customers enjoy eating.
4. To accomplish these goals in a sustainable manner for the long-term success of agriculture.
Reflecting on 2025
The past year was an exciting one and marked several important milestones for our program. One of the most significant steps forward was the purchase of our first Purebred Simmentals, driven by growing customer demand. Their progeny begin to establish their place in our program with this sale, making it their inaugural offering. Alongside that, extensive embryo flushing was completed to firmly set the foundation for where this program is headed in the future.
We also welcomed Matt Sartoris and Daryl Leppa to our customer service team, strengthening our ability to support customers before, during, and after the sale.
Another major highlight came from the completion of our first Feed Efficiency sire groups in a commercial feedlot environment. The results were extremely encouraging and continue to validate the direction we’ve chosen. Inside this catalogue, you’ll see the data that shows exactly why we do what we do. Building on that momentum, we received our first progeny test results from the highly anticipated Tycoon sons (1271 and 1173) as well as Byergo Bruce 1852, providing even more insight into the consistency and reliability of these genetics.
Throughout the year, we also saw increased interest from both buyers and sellers in special feeder sales that now include feed efficiency indexes in their listings. This growing demand reinforces the value of measurable efficiency in today’s marketplace. We had the opportunity to share these findings through multiple speaking engagements, highlighting the real, practical advantages we continue to uncover. Rounding out the year, we were proud to have two high-selling bred females in the inaugural White Lights Charolais Sale, another encouraging sign of industry confidence in our program.
This Year’s Sale Offering
This year’s sale features the first sons of Hwy Kobe 234K, our high-selling bull from 2024. On the calving-ease Charolais side, sires such as Sparrows Shooter, Pro-Char Martel, and Jmar Jericho bring a strong, well-balanced offering. Rounding out the Charolais offering, the tried and tested JSR Estrada and a new sire to us, Pleasant Dawn Transport both have multiple elite progeny to choose from. On the Simmental and Angus side, the Tycoons and Bruces make their first appearance in our sale, and we are excited to share these cattle with you. Also as a special note, we will have our first Feed Efficiency Verified commercial females for sale in the fall of 2026.
The Foundation of Our Program
As always, the foundation of our cow herd is built on calving ease, sound feet, and tidy udders, paired with accurately tested and carefully recorded data for pedigree, efficiency, performance, and quality. Transparency is important to us, which is why we provide full disclosure on our progeny through HerdTrax links, giving you access to all the information you need to select genetics that fit your operation.
We also encourage you to try our interactive Quick Bull Sort feature on our website before you thumb through this catalogue. With just a few clicks, you can filter cattle based on the traits that matter most to you. Customers consistently tell us it’s one of the most valuable time-saving tools they’ve used when shopping for bulls.
Looking Ahead
Producing seedstock is a journey of continual improvement. As new technology becomes available, it allows us to advance genetic progress with greater speed and accuracy. We appreciate your interest in our program and would welcome the opportunity to show you what we have to offer.
A sincere thank you to all our staff at Highway 21 Group and the Hanna Ranch for their dedication and support every step of the way.

Welcome to the Highway 21 Group Annual Bull Sale
On behalf of the entire team at T Bar, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the Highway 21 Bull Sale, hosted at the ranch near Hanna, Alberta. This is a program built on real-world experience, disciplined data collection, and a clear focus on profitability for the commercial cattleman.
After several decades in the feedlot business — feeding cattle in the harsh Western Canadian climate and across the United States — the Highway 21 team understands firsthand that feed is the number one expense in raising beef. That practical knowledge has shaped their breeding philosophy and led to a significant investment in technology that measures what matters most.
This year’s offering is both deep and diverse, featuring Charolais yearling and two-year-old bulls, their proven two-year-old composite bulls, and new this year, their first group of purebred Simmental yearling bulls. Every bull in this catalogue is backed by some of the most comprehensive data in the industry.
Highway 21 is the only supplier of bulls in Canada that feed efficiency tests every bull they sell. Through their investment in the GrowSafe bunk system, they individually measure intake and performance, allowing you to make informed, data-driven decisions. The result is the opportunity to build a more efficient, more economical cow herd.
They are also taking it one step further by helping you market calves sired by their upper-end, feed-efficient bulls — demonstrating true customer-added value. Not only can you lower your cost of production, but you may also capture premiums for documented efficiency verified genetics. We encourage you to study the offering and join us sale day near Hanna for a powerful set of bulls and come early to enjoy the steak dinner and hospitality. If you require any assistance prior to or sale day, feel free to reach out to any of us at T Bar C as we would be more than happy to help in any way we can.

We guarantee:
• Bulls passed a semen evaluation by a licensed veterinarian prior to sale. A certificate will be available upon request.
• Bulls are structurally sound and healthy (upon delivery) and will have no issues breeding cows naturally.
• Bulls can be handled using proper animal handling skills on foot, horseback, with quads and cattle dogs. Our customer’s safety is of utmost importance.
• Bulls have the fleshing ability to return to pre breeding condition prior to the next breeding season, assuming no more than a 90-day breeding season and the same start to the breeding season the next year. This can be achieved with a high-quality forage ration or diet.

Your options for bull replacements are:
1. We will replace the bull with one of equal or superior quality at no additional cost.
2. Replace the bull and adjust the value agreed upon and issue you a payment for the spread.

2. 50% of purchase price up to May 1, 2028
3. 25% of purchase price up to May 1, 2029
The bull that is being replaced becomes the property of Hwy21 to salvage/sell and we require ownership transferred.
Note: Bulls valued over $15,000 will be discussed with buyers for warranty terms on a case-by-case basis. Purchases of this value are expected to come with a high level of scrutiny by the buyer, and thus Hwy 21 reserves the right to not take on all the risk over this value.
EFFICIENCY VERIFIED GENETICS...
We are one of few producers in North America that are evaluating all our progeny for feed efficiency. We have been testing using Growsafe technologies for 11 years running. We were pleased to learn on our recent Charolais and Simmental yearling bulls that 27% of them rank in the top 10% of all cattle ever tested and that we have offered more Efficiency Verified Charolais bulls than any other breeder in Canada. See the RFI quick facts/FAQs at the back of the catalogue.

YOU WANTED PROOF...HERE IT IS.
In the fall of 2024, we conducted a feed efficiency trial at our Acme feedyard to measure how Efficiency Verified (EV) genetics convert into real savings.
Three groups entered the yard at the same time:
• Auction-sourced calves of unknown origin
• Calves sired by EV bulls
• Calves from our terminal herd sired by one of our top efficiency sires
The results were clear.
Cattle with Efficiency Verified genetics outperformed the rest and required significantly less feed to finish. In a single pen of 200 steers, EV genetics reduced feed costs by approximately $11,000-$28,000!!
THAT’S REAL MONEY — DRIVEN BY REAL DATA. Efficiency isn’t a theory at Highway 21. It’s proven in the feed bunk.
STEERS
*Based on ~950 lbs net gain
HEIFERS
*Based on ~900 lbs net gain
*At today’s prices, the added weight gain represents an additional $225–$275 per head in marketable sale value — on the same days on feed.
HOW DOES THIS BENEFIT THE COW/CALF GUY?
Highway 21 bulls are backed by efficiency-verified (EV) genetics that feedlots recognize and reward with premium prices.
Through our Calf Buy-Back Program (see Glossary), we pay fair market value to producers using Highway 21 bulls, providing price certainty and helping avoid auction fees.
EV genetics also improve long-term herd efficiency. Replacement heifers reach breeding weight sooner and maintain condition on less feed. Over time, retained EV females can reduce feed costs by up to 10% in one generation and 30% in three generations.
In practical terms, land that once supported 100 cows can support up to 130 cows within three generations.
THE RESULT: LOWER COSTS, STRONGER PERFORMANCE, AND GREATER PROFITABILITY.

CALVING EASE VS. BIRTH WEIGHT
Calving ease and birth weight are related — but not the same.
Birth weight measures how heavy a calf is at birth. Calving ease measures how easily that calf is born, accounting for calf shape, structure, and the cow’s maternal traits.
A calf with moderate birth weight can still be easy — or difficult — to deliver depending on its build and the cow. For buyers, calving ease is the more reliable indicator of smooth, low-intervention births than birth weight alone. CE direct is 7 times more important in selection than actual birthweight. BW can largely be affected by season and temperature, nutrition, protein, Body Condition Score of dam, age of dam, and size of dam.
Bottom Line:
Select for calving ease to reduce risk, labour, and stress at calving time.

WHAT IS A GOOD BULL WORTH?
YOUR RETURN ON INVESTMENT:
Comparing a $15,000 bull to a $9,000 bull —
A bull used for four seasons, should sire at least 80 calves.
If a more expensive bull with better performance produces weaning weights 30-35lbs heavier, his calves would bring $180 more per head through improved performance and consistency. That bull would return $14,400 in added value over a lower performing $9,000 bull, with a net of $8,400 to the buyer— before accounting for better replacement females and herd improvement.

TESTIMONIAL
We have bought bulls from Highway 21for the past 5 years. The amount of Data available on their bulls is second to none. If you are looking for calving ease, performance, feed efficiency, or any other trait that is important to you, their bull ranking system is easy to use and allows you to quickly pick through the bulls based on what you are looking for.
They are really hard on their cattle when it comes to culling, so only the good ones make the sale. The bulls are not overfed, so we know when we buy one he is going to last. Bulls are a big investment, the longer they are around the better the investment.
The first year Millers had their bull sale, we didn't need any bulls and actually did not end up buying a bull through their sale. Part way through the breeding season we had a Bull go down. I called Lyle and he delivered a bull to the pasture the next day. We have been buying bulls ever since. The service is exceptional and the Miller family is great to deal with.

As I perused Hwy 21's inaugural bull catalogue in 2022, some of the composite bulls piqued my interest. I didn't intend on purchasing one, and I was unable to take the time to go to the sale. However, as I was watching them sell on DLMS, I threw out a bid on one I thought would work in my program and ended up taking it home. The bull was not recommended for heifers but from his moderate 85 lb birth weight I felt I could reasonably expect good results. That year I tried him on 12 small half Simmental, half Angus heifers. I try to keep my cow herd so that my mature cows are in that 1200 to 1400 lb range, so some of these heifers were only 650lbs when they were bred, and around 900 to 1000 lbs when they were calving. They all calved without any assistance, and the calves grew well. Of the 12, I kept 5 heifer calves for replacements, and they will be calving for the first time this spring. In 2023 I put him with a group of 40 heifers, and 35 were pregnant in the first 50 days. They all calved unassisted with nice looking calves that performed well. Last year I did the same thing. I also purchased a yearling Charolais bull in 2022 and another one in 2024. During the winter, I always feed all my bulls in a group separate from the cow herd, and I noticed my bulls purchased from Highway 21 maintained their body condition better than some of my other bulls. (I actually sorted a couple of bulls from other breeders out and fed them extra grain separately, so that they could keep their condition). This confirmed to me that Highway 21 bulls have been selected for better feed efficiency. - Hank Janzen

Long, deep, and ready to work, he represents the kind of genetics that drive profitability from pasture to payweight.

TESTIMONIAL
At Highway 21's first Efficiency Verified Genetics sale in 2022, we purchased a pair of composite bulls with the goal of increasing our profitability, efficiency and feed conversion not only in the feedlot but also in the cow herd. The first calf crop sired by these bulls were placed in the feedlot on a retained ownership program and harvested in the spring of 2024 and the results were very encouraging. All our calves were DNA sire verified and with the use of Herdtrax the following numbers were easily calculated. When comparing all calves sired by our various bull providers including Composite, Angus and Simmental that we used on our farm, the pair of Composite bulls from Highway 21produced the following:
• Higher carcass weight per day of age by almost 5%
• Higher carcass yield by 9%
• Larger rib eye by 8.4%
• Larger carcass size of an average of 38 pounds. Thus, on average resulting in a more profitable carcass in the heifers of $173, and the steers of $233. We believe this validates the key objectives that highway 21 set out when they decided to start marketing their genetics. With these genetics Highway 21 is working to develop, the proven performance, and the complete data packaged provided to help us make decisions, we have and will continue to look to Highway 21 for bulls.

A powerhouse flush dam at Hwy 21, she posts a 106 Weaning Index and 104 Yearling Index. A top 15% ADG dam in the Vytelle database with 22 progeny selected and feed-efficiency tested, she boasts an outstanding EPD profile with eight traits in the top 20% and ranks as a top 1% TSI dam.
The infamous DC/CRJ Tank brings calving ease and proven performance to his offspring. When you combine the sire and dams EPD profiles, its not a surprise you get one such as this.
SCURS VS. HORNS
Scurs are small, loosely attached growths, while horns are firmly attached to the skull — they are genetically different.
• Scurs are not the same as horns and do not increase the chance of horned calves.
• Heifers must receive the scur gene from both sire and dam, making scurs rare in commercial herds.
• Scurs do not affect performance,
efficiency, or carcass value.
• When present, scurs are usually small and easily managed.
• Scurred calves are not discounted in commercial auctions.
• Because scurs are often misunderstood, scurred bulls may sell for less — creating a value opportunity for informed buyers.
Bottom Line: Scurs are a genetic
— not
— and do not compromise profitability.

THANK YOU TO THE HIGHWAY 21 STAFF
We want to give a big shoutout to our amazing staff for all the hard work you put in every single day. From early mornings to long afternoons, you tackle every task with teamwork, grit, and a great attitude that keeps things running smoothly. We truly appreciate everything you do to keep our farm growing and thriving - we couldn't do it without you!
INTRODUCING OUR SIMMENTAL PROGRAM
The addition of Simmental genetics marks an exciting and intentional step decision was driven by customer demand and guided by the same principles shaped everything we do — efficiency, functionality, and long-term profitability across the beef industry.
As feed efficiency and performance data continue to play a larger role in how cattle are evaluated and marketed, we see Simmental genetics as a natural fit. Their ability to add performance, maternal strength, and flexibility across production systems aligns well with our goal of producing cattle that work — not just on paper, but in real-world environments.
To establish this program on solid footing, we made a significant investment in females purchased from Rendevous Farms dispersal sale. These cattle were selected for structural integrity, udder quality, calving ease, and maternal consistency — traits we believe are non-negotiable when building a sustainable cow herd. From the outset, this group has also been integrated into our data collection and efficiency testing protocols to ensure they meet the same standards of accountability as the rest of our program.
While this offering represents the first chapter of our Simmental program, it is backed by a clear long-term vision. Through planned mating decisions, extensive use of technology, and continued performance evaluation, our goal is to develop Simmental genetics that complement our existing program and add measurable value for our customers.
We appreciate your interest as we begin this new chapter and look forward to sharing the progress and potential of these cattle with you in the years ahead.

One of the biggest advantages for our operation is docility. With our whole family working with the cattle daily, calm, manageable bulls are essential. Highway 21 bulls have fit seamlessly into our program.
We’ve seen major improvements in feed efficiency, especially when retaining replacement heifers. Our calves are consistently 35–45 pounds heavier at weaning and are selling about two weeks earlier than before. When we feed our own steers at home, they average 3.8 to 4.2 pounds of gain per day yearround, finishing at approximately 1,600 pounds live weight.
On top of the performance, their customer service and insurance program are second to none. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a Highway 21 bull to any producer looking to improve their herd.”
CURTIS & NEVADA WRIGHT / WRIGHT-WAY
The most feed-efficient bull on offer and the heaviest of all the two-yearolds, this standout combines data, depth, and dimension. Very deepbodied and square-made, he brings power and capacity from both sides of his pedigree. His dam posts an outstanding Feed-to-Gain ratio of 5.70 with an RFI of -4.02, while his sire adds further efficiency with a 5.52 F:G and an RFI of -2.33. This bull is built to convert feed into pounds as efficiently as possible, helping lower cost of gain while maximizing returns — the kind of genetics that directly impact your bottom line.
Our favourite Bruce son in the sale, this Angus-influenced bull combines style, efficiency, and carcass merit. He ranks second for marbling and leads the group for percent Lean Meat Yield. Backed by his dam Bonnie’s strong performance with a 104.8 weaning index and 106 yearling index, he offers a powerful blend of carcass quality and growth.
This elite ranked powerhouse cow has consistently produced top-performing calves. Known for her excellent udder, strong feet, and exceptional fertility, she’s a favorite among Herdtrax users, many specifically inquiring about her. A reliable flush cow, she’s never missed a calf and always delivers on time. With a mature weight of 1,325 lbs and a moderate frame, she combines efficiency with longevity Homo red, Leptin TT. She’s built for performance, consistency, and longterm success.
PM THUNDERBIRD 14’14
THUNDERBIRD 7386
AMY 3178A
A son of this bull was a high seller in the 2025 sale, and it’s easy to see why. He posts an 80 lb average birth weight with 100% unassisted calvings, a 109% weaning index, and a 103% yearling index. Extra hairy and stout — a true “meat wagon” — he ranks in the top 7% for RFI and top 12% for ADG on Vytelle feed testing among 350,000 head, with a 50% accuracy rating. His dam, the famous Red Xenia 206X, and his sire, both top-ranked for maternal and performance traits, bring proven genetics, while the entire family line consistently tests at the top for feed efficiency, making this bull’s genetics both exceptional and highly reliable.
Our favorite red bull in the offering, this standout showcases the true power of heterosis by blending the best traits of his Angus, Simmental, and Gelbvieh genetics. He combines growth, efficiency, fertility, and durability in one balanced, high-performing package, making him a versatile and profitable addition to any herd.
Feed efficiency is the name of the game with this bull. One of the topperforming composite bulls on test this year, he is backed by Byergo Bruce, a sire known for excellent Feed-to-Gain metrics. Built to convert feed into pounds, he offers the kind of efficiency that lowers cost of gain and boosts long-term profitability.
COMPOSITE REFERENCE SIRES
HWY ODIN 9044G
An elite-ranking sire in HerdTrax, this bull’s impact far exceeds what our quick “snapshot picture” can show. He combines added length with perfect feet and a proven track record, siring 76 progeny with a 39% retention rate. Sired by KWA Odin 29A, he has six sons and two grandsons on offer. He has been successfully and repeatedly bred to heifers, producing a tight birthweight range, and his daughters continue to be highly valued in the program — we love his females.
BYERGO BRUCE 1852J
Infamously purchased from Byergo Angus in Missouri for his exceptional feed efficiency, growth, and calving ease, this purebred Angus bull posts an 83 lb birth weight with a 279-day gestation and 100% unassisted births, while maintaining a 103% weaning index. He himself demonstrates elite efficiency, with a 3.41:1 dry matter conversion, and his progeny continue that performance, averaging -1.88 RFI and topping the charts on Vytelle feed tests. With 34 tested offspring, he ranks in the top 1% for feed efficiency and the top 2% for growth, with 60% accuracy — a level of performance and accuracy you’ll only find here. Simply put, he is a proven, elite genetics package built to make an immediate and measurable impact in any program. 4 sons sell.
HWY TYCOON 1271J
Everyone who toured the 2023 bull pen took notice of this standout sire, and the wait for his first progeny has been well worth it. With Tycoon influence on the Simmental side of his pedigree, he needs no introduction. He posts a 116 weaning index himself and 103 on progeny, with a 78 lb average birth weight and a tight high-to-low range, with all but one unassisted — a true testament to calving ease without sacrificing performance. Even with just a couple of years in the program, he ranks as an elite sire, and his daughters are continually being selected for their quality and consistency. Square-made and extra hairy, he ranks in the top 11% for feed efficiency. Both his sire and dam hold elite rankings in Herdtrax, proving these traits come by honestly. His progeny will continue to be a highlight in our program for years to come. 6 sons sell.
THUNDERBIRD 14’14B
Hailing from the famous Hamilton Farms Kodiak bull, he ranks in the top 15% for CE, top 40% for WW, and top 30% for YW. He sits third in our herd for progeny born, with 225 head in total, including 82 direct and secondary replacements averaging a 100% index for WW and 103% for YW, as well as ranking in the top 40% on Vytelle feed index for growth. His 83 lb birth weight average with a 280-day gestation continues to demonstrate how his Angus EPDs translate into real-world calving ease and performance. He is the sire of several rising stars in our program, and his influence is growing as more of his grandsons and daughters are retained for breeding. He leaves a lasting legacy, with three sons and two grandsons on offer that carry his name through the pedigree tree — a bull whose impact will be felt for years to come.

BRAYSHAR CHAROLAIS
Sitting down with the Miller family and their feeding crew to discuss feeding their Purebred Cattle, there has always been a clear goal: “Feed the cattle in a safe and responsible way in order to maximize the genetic potential of these bulls when they go to their new homes”.
Their cattle have been raised on high roughage diets with adequate energy to develop and maintain strong breeding soundness throughout the growing phase. It is highly important that we have a balanced ration with the right protein and energy requirements being met so the fibro-lytic and starch digesting bacteria of the rumen can symbiotically metabolize the feedstuffs provided for these cattle daily. At High Level Cattle Consulting, we believe in feeding bulls to optimize performance without compromising longevity. We utilize Beef MAX, a nutrition program that is based on research with proven results. As a nutrition & feeding team, we have spent an extensive amount of time and effort in understanding the feedstuffs that are available, and the nutrients provided by each ingredient. Utilizing the technologies that they have available, proper daily feeding management is benefiting the cattle by maintaining a consistent plane of nutrition for these bulls to attain their maximum potential at maturity.
These bulls have been raised on an Organic Trace Mineral and balanced Vitamin program ensuring proper immune responses as well as to aid in maximizing scrotal development and enhance semen quality.
With the value of cattle in our industry being at an all-time high, it is important to look for bulls that are developed properly, that will have longevity in your herd and will pass on the traits of profitable beef production to their offspring. With the nutrition program we have in place along with the genetics that the Miller family have put together it’s a combination that is driven home in how these cattle were raised and developed.

Jeff Lyle

WHAT WE OFFER
DEVELOPMENT OF BULLS… WHEN WE ARE BUYERS, AND SELLERS
When we are buying seedstock we are ALWAYS interested in the feeding program of our suppliers as it is of utmost importance in our eyes. We develop our bulls for sale in the same fashion as what we want to see when we are in the buyer’s seat.
• Overfeeding of bulls can contribute to feet problems as well as permanent fertility problems
• Bulls have been on a high roughage, low energy ration
• We are proud to employ High Level Cattle Consulting and their professional staff to aid in the management of our bull development.
• These bulls may not be carrying as much condition as your accustomed to.
• Bulls that are developed such as these should create more longevity within your herd and breed more cows.
VERIFIED BEEF PRODUCTION (VBP+)...
100K GENOMICALLY ENHANCED EPD...
When you see this symbol with a bull, the accuracy of his EPD’s have been genomically enhanced. By testing, it is the equivalent of the sire having about 25 progeny when assessing the top four traits (CE, BW, WW, YW). This improved accuracy helps provide confidence when selecting young animals with no actual offspring that otherwise would only have an EPD accuracy based on their sire, dam, and their own performance data.
INTEREST...
Any bill in arrears (30 days past invoice date) may be assessed an interest rate of 1.5% per month, 18% per annum, unless prior arrangements have been made with Highway 21 Group.
CALF BUY BACK AND MARKETING...
At Highway 21 Feeders, we are always looking for exceptional cattle to buy and feed. We know the bulls you have bought, the traits they excel in and as well their dam and sire better than anyone. This service comes at no cost from us.

EFFICIENCY VERIFIED FEMALES…
We do not just evaluate our sires. We also assess our replacement females. For the past 10 years we have been infusing females into our program that have underwent Growsafe testing for RFI and FCR. This is necessary to improve the efficiency of the animals we produce from the DAM side of the equation as well. We are producing more of these EFFICIENCY VERIFIED females than we can use in our own herd. Watch for a special Efficiency Verified bred female sale in the fall of 2026.
ULTRASOUND...
We have engaged Windy Ridge Ultrasound for the past 11 years. Ultra sounding helps us obtain a snapshot of what our progeny is carrying under the hide, as well as an indication of how the genetics of the animal is converting energy to protein and fat. Knowing where we stand helps us ensure we are producing a product that the end user (processors and consumers) is interested in purchasing. Due to the age of the animals, and the fact that they are not on a finishing diet, we are not necessarily critical that they are all currently grading AAA or higher, or that the have a certain lean meat yield, backfat or Rib Eye Area. We use it as a representation of comparison within the group to help identify progeny that may be superior for each trait.
Association Expected Progeny Differences (EPD’s)
• TI/TSI – Terminal Sire Index, A tool used to rank terminal sires based on profit potential of their offspring using factors of growth, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics. Expressed in $’s per head per offspring.
• API – All Purpose Index (Simmental) - A tool used to rank Simmental sires for overall profitability in a commercial beef operation where replacement females are retained and calves are marketed. Combines calving ease, maternal performance, growth, and carcass traits into a single dollar value, expressed in $ per head per offspring.
• CE – The CE EPD expresses differences in calving difficulty between calves born to first calf heifers. When comparing two sires, the larger value indicates fewer potential calving difficulties..
• BW – Expressed in pounds. Smaller EPD means lighter BW.
• WW – Expressed in pounds. Larger WW EPD’s indicate progeny will have higher 205 day weaning weights.
• YW – Expressed in pounds. Larger YW EPD’s indicate progeny will have higher 365 day yearling weights
• Milk – Represented in pounds weaned relative to daughters expected milk and mothering ability.
• MTL – Combines ½ of the WW EPD and all the Milk EPD and is expressed as pounds of calf weaned at 205 days. Higher numbers predict greater weaning weights from female progeny.
• CW – Expressed in lbs. Higher numbers will have a greater carcass weight at slaughter.
• REA – Expected difference of REA in square inches. Higher numbers predict larger REA.
• Fat – Expected difference of fat measurement. Lower numbers predict less unwanted fat
• % Rank – We have saved you the time of looking up how each animal ranks for each trait within the breed. Numbers less than 50 are in the top half of the breed for the trait and are highlighted, greater than 50 are in the bottom half.
• Pedigree – All sires, dams, grandsires and granddams are supplied to the best of our abilities. If you wish to look further into the pedigree, please see the Herdtrax links on the website or the CCA registry.
OUR
HARD DATA
Complimenting the customary EPD values to improve the accuracy for your breeding decisions.
• Breed Makeup – Represents the percent heterosis of the animal. Increased heterosis improves pregnancy rates, feed efficiency and performance.
• Hybrid Index - Represents the percent heterosis of the animal. Increased heterosis improves pregnancy rates, feed efficiency and performance.
GLOSSARY
• BW – Actual BW, expressed in lbs
• AOD – Age of Dam in years at time of calving.
• Dam Index – Herdtrax All Purpose Index (HAPI) The HAPI index or “Happy” index is meant to compare cows (in herd) based on their ability to be strong maternally and terminally. For full cow indexing guides, see our Bull Ranking Guide @ www. highway21group.com
• Docility Scoring - The safety of our customers, staff and family is Number 1. Without all of them, none of our success would be possible. Handling livestock should not have to be dangerous. We handle these animals daily in a low stress environment and do our best to prepare them for all types of environments. Each animal does have its own personality and reacts differently to handling. We have adopted what many other breeders already do, and what we feel should be a standard in the industry, by applying a docility score to our animals. We understand this may deter you from an animal you would have otherwise purchased, but your safety of knowing what you are buying is of utmost importance.
Our ranking system is as such:
1. These animals are not easily or safely handled. We have eliminated them from the herd.
2. These animals can be harder to handle, especially if alone or under pressure. They require a wider flight zone and can move quickly to maintain this flight zone.
3. These animals are very easy to handle and have a smaller flight zone. They will usually move off pressure slowly but with ease. Most of the animals will fit into this score.
4. These animals are extremely quiet and will take a lot of pressure to move. They do not get excited easily alone or in a group.
CALVING EASE (CE) SCORING
We have made every effort to have a very CONSERVATIVE approach to Calving Ease ranking on our Composite Bulls. We want you to sleep well at night knowing we are doing our part to make sure you will not have problems. Aside from naturally culling for calving ease issues over the past 10 years in our herd, we have outlined our criteria for how we have scored these bulls for CE. For the Purebred Charolais, we have posted the breed assoc EPD's for reference.
3 HHH Use on Large frame first calf heifers with confidence. 2 HH Use on 2nd calvers or medium framed cows with confidence 1 H Use on Mature cows (3rd calvers and up)
CRITERIA
CE Score 3 HHH
95 BW and lower on:
1. Bull for sale, reference sire, average of all reference sire progeny, average of all reference dam progeny
2. Assessed the low to high of BW of all progeny for deviation from the average
3. Reviewed the frequency of assisted at birth of all progeny of Reference sire to be less than 1%
4. Assessed the animal phenotypically for a smooth shoulder, narrow head for calving ease
CE Score 2 HH
Same criteria except using a 105 lb BW and lower and frequency of assisted births to be less than 5%.
CE Score 1 H
Same criteria except using greater than 105lb BW and frequency of assisted births less than 5%
GLOSSARY
• RFI (Residual Feed Intake) – RFI is calculated as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and their expected feed intake. For more in depth information, see the GROWSAFE RFI QUICK FACTS. Lower/Negative numbers are superior.
• FCR (Feed Conversion Ratio) – Represented in pounds of dry feed consumed to gain one pound of live weight. Lower numbers are superior.
• FCR Index – Represents the feed conversion ratio in terms of percentage better than (100+) or worse than the average of the test group.
• Test ADG – Gain per day while the animals were on Feed Efficiency test.
• ADJ 205 – Weaning weight expressed in lbs adjusted to 205 days to compare all bulls at equal age.
• Wean Ratio – Represents the percentage that the adjusted 205 weight is of the group.
• Wean ADG – Gain per day from Birth to actual weaning weight
• ADJ 365 – Yearling weight expressed in lbs adjusted to 365 days to compare all bulls at equal age.
• YRLG Ratio – Represents the percentage that the adjusted 365 weight is of the group.
• Post Wean ADG – Actual gain per day from weaning to yearling.
• WPDA – Actual gain per day of age based on actual yearling weight. The Charolais match that of the association and BW is included as weight gain. Herdtrax is used for the Composites and subtracts BW from the yearling weight in calculating the weight gain.
• MARB – Marbling is the percent of Intermuscular fat within the muscle. AAA, AA, A. The ranking uses actual score instead of Canadian Beef Grading class.
• BF - Backfat is the thickness of fat covering the loin muscle in inches. This is the main trait that affects percent Lean Meat Yield or Y1-Y5 yield grades at processing. The greater the measurement, the poorer or higher (Y5) the yield grade.
• REA (Rib Eye Area) – The size of the loin muscle in square inches. An increase in REA will raise the percent Lean Meat Yield.
• REA in^2/100# – Represents square inches of Rib Eye per 100 lbs live weight
• % LMY – Percent Lean Meat Yield represents what percent of the carcass is lean muscle versus bone, fat, etc.
