elcome to the Double R Dispersal and High Country Production Sale. The Young family has been in the Simmental business for decades, that has lead to this impressive set of cattle being offered. T Bar C is excited about this event and working alongside the Youngs. The influence of KOP Spartan is very evident throughout the catalog, as he is also selling as lot 1. This former CWA Champion Bull has a lot going for him, his blaze face, his beautiful daughters in production and overall mass and soundness make him a bull to be on anyone’s radar. Pay attention to the Spartan bred cattle! RJY Casino is another feature herdbull who has bred extremely well. This 2017 Ag Ex Supreme Champion Overall breeds bull sells as lot 2, who has been admired by many cattlemen for his muscle, mass and stoutness. He also has attractive blaze faced with many progeny being represented in this sale. Cow families have also been very stressed here at the Youngs. The Double R cattle are loaded up on the Elegant Force and 669K cow families. Elegant Force has quite the track record, so please do some research on this productive family. 669K has been a pillar for Stacy and you will see her influence through daughters and full sisters selling. Also, another sale feature will be the bull calves selling. This is the top cut of the pen, as these herds have been known for raising influential herdsires in the industry... most recently, a bull named Chrome whose influence is also in the sale. The Youngs have been very active within the breed at all levels whether it be with juniors or on the National Board. December 14 will be a day of opportunity and also one of the few days this fall the Simmental breed offers the opportunity to buy productive cows, not just bred heifers. Please don’t be afraid to contact Chris, Shane or myself regarding the offering. Also contact the Youngs and visit with them about their cattle or have a tour. See you at the Daines in Innisfail.

elcome to the Double R Farms Dispersal. This time last year I would have thought those words were crazy, but the last 12 months have brought a lot of change in my life. It has always been my philosophy that with change comes opportunity, and your opportunity has arrived. The Double R herd has never been large in size, but rather big in quality. We have based the herd around two cows, and so 90% of the offering will trace back to those two females; CAJS Elegant Force 124W and WFL Miss Westway 669K. Both these females had a lasting impression and it is pretty neat to have every female with an SLY tattoo have one of these two cows in their pedigree.

Stacy Young 412, 7021 South Terwillegar Dr. Edmonton, AB T6R 0K6 Stacy: 780-718-0622 info@doublerfarms.ca www.doublerfarms.ca

The cow herd is young right now, and full of potential. The five two-year-old females are the best I have had the privilege to own, and the five bred heifers are ready to be mother cows. Yet the most exciting part might be the number of full sisters that will sell. They are consistent, proven, and you will get to be the judge of which one is your favourite. And who can forget about the three matriarch females. They all have multiple daughters to sell and lots of future left in them. This will be your only opportunity to purchase KOP Spartan cows this year, and with many of the cows bred to RJY Casino, I believe the 2018 calves could be the most exciting yet. I look forward to the chance to visit with everyone this fall, and show off the herd one last time. Feel free to stop in at the farm for a tour, or check out a few of the animals on offer on the fall show road.

O

On behalf of Dee and I, we would like to welcome you to this sale. A year ago we would have never thought that we would be selling the major part of our herd. Unfortunately some changes happened and it made us look at our future and what that was to look like. In the end after the several months, the future looks bright; it just will not include over 100 head of breeding cattle. Instead it will be sized more to the land and facilities we have. We are very proud of our family and look forward to the coming years and having the time to enjoy all that comes with them and our friends. If you know us, we are very passionate about what we do and our love for the Simmental breed. It has rewarded us and our daughters a wonderful life, full of memories and friendships. We look forward to continuing to do what we love, along with a bit less of a work load.

Rob & Deanne Young Box 577 Breton, AB T0C 0P0 Rob: 780-514-0758 Home: 780-696-3643 highcountrycattle@gmail.com www.highcountrycattle.com

We love our cows and this will be the toughest part of the change. We have worked very hard on the farm and off the farm to build a herd of cows based on cow families that could replicate or be better in the next generation. Our focus over the last 10 years on structure has been paramount. We believed that that was one of the major areas that needed to be addressed in the breed. We are proud to say that many other breeders have seen the need for change and have done a great job in this area. Sometimes that meant that we were not using the next great body type sire, or high selling individual but led us to finding herd bulls that we could trust to be structurally right and with the type of pattern that allowed them to stay viable. We believe the breed is as good as it has ever been and it is showing in the strong sales and large number of people entering the breed. The sale cattle will come to you in working condition. We hope that this will be the next transition of the breed. There is a difference between cattle in good shape, and well-presented and cattle that are overfed. I could never understand the need to over feed cattle, and why people paid for it. I am happy to say that we are turning the corner as breeders on this problem and making the cattle more valuable. In advance of the sale, thank you to everyone that has played a part in helping us get to this point; we appreciate all the help. We look forward to the future of this great breed and watching the cattle we sell making an impact on the herds that they go to.

Grand Champion Bull CWA 2015

RJY 7C

There is only one thing that I can say about Spartan; he is the best Simmental breeding bull I have ever used. When I first saw him at Edmund Kopp’s sale he was the exact bull that I had hoped to find. He walked around the pen with unreal ease and flexibility that was not common at that time. He was good footed and had a great head carriage and a wonderful two year old dam. I was the happiest guy on earth that we were able to purchase him. The rest is history as you can see the progeny, exiting heifers that grow into the most beautiful udder females that raise great calves. The bulls are highly marketable and have been sought after by repeat customers. Spartan has bred naturally 46 to 60 cows the last two years between our place and Shelley’s commercial herd never coming home under conditioned. The year he was Grand Champion Bull at Agribition he naturally bred 46 head. This is a great opportunity to purchase a great one and turn him out, sell shares, or sell semen. We are selling full possession and full North American semen rights in Spartan. We thank Mala-Daki Simmentals for acquiring the Australian semen rights in 2015.We have semen for our own in herd use. We would like to thank Ron and Shelley Reich for being such good partners in Spartan and showing us how well he worked in their commercial herd. • Homo Polled • Red • Purebred • Male Consigned By High Country Cattle

Casino 11C

Junior Champion Bull Agribition 2016

The day Casino was born he looked like a herd bull and that is just what he grew up to be. He has been admired for his overall mass of muscle, body and extreme structural correctness. We have had the pleasure of exhibiting Casino since he was a calf. He has been highly competitive only missing the championship drive once. The best part is that everyone who has assessed him cannot say enough good about him. He was just named the Supreme Champion Bull at Manitoba Ag Ex. Casino has an unreal temperament that just cannot be overlooked. We had several people want to buy him as a calf and at that time we really should have sold him but could not find one as sound and big footed as him. All I could think of was how well he would work on the Spartan daughters and we are extremely excited to see those calves this spring. His first calf crop is on the ground now and they are even more than we could have hoped for. They are heavy weights and just as massive as he is. He is a true breeding bull and will be a major part of our program for years to come through semen, sons and daughters. We will be exhibiting him this fall and I am very excited to see him and his son, Chip stand in our display. Casino’s dam has been one of the great purchases we have ever made. She has never missed having a superior calf. We are selling full possession and semen rights in Casino. We do have semen on him and will only use it in herd. We would like to thank Ron and Shelley Reich for being such good partners in Casino and showing us how well he worked in a commercial herd. • Hetero Polled and Non-Dilutor • Red • Purebred • Male Consigned By High Country Cattle

All along I have said that this will be the female that will be the hardest to sell. She was the last calf of the WFL 669K female that the red herd is built around, and have been a no miss producer. Her three full sibling daughters in the sale are the kind anyone can fall in love with. The Revolution cows are easy doing, beautiful uddered, big footed, and just all round awesome. 12X may just be one of the best Revolution cows to walk our pastures. • Hetero Polled • Red • Purebred • Female Observed bred to IPU 68M Vegas 6D on March 23, 2017. Sweet Escape is the two-year-old version of the full sisters. Each day I seem to have a different favourite, but this girl might take the cake with her picture perfect udder. She is so smoothly made, has tons of rib shape, and has the front third extension that is hard to find in red Simmentals. The Revolution x Spartan cross has worked so well, and this cow may just be the standout of them all. She is one that will make her way to a donor pen. • Polled • Red • Purebred • Female Observed bred to RJY Casino 11C on March 25, 2017. Exposed to RJY Casino 11C from April 5 to May 23, 2017. If there is one female that people always ask “who’s that?!” this is her. She is the matriarch of the red females, and one that you could look at all day. Priceless Cow Family

Priceless is the only red female that will sell without the SLY prefix, and I don’t think I have ever bought an animal that has been asked about so much. She was my pick of red females last fall, being bought out of the Shade’s sale. Dark red, tons of rib shape, and packed full of thickness. These Authority females are rare to find, and this is one that I had big plans for. • Homo Polled • Red • Purebred • Female Observed bred to KOP Spartan on March 24, 2017. Every cow herd has or hopes to have a cow family that has and does everything you could hope for. The Signatures are ours. I would put this cow family up against any of the best. They taught us you could have a sound footed, sound structured, feminine Simmentals with great udders and longevity. The mainstay of the family where two full transplant siblings, 5W and 10W. These Power Drive females are true greats and they both have led our Black program from the beginning. 10W was sold to Owen Martin last year to lead his black program. They both were donors and as you will see they can raise females that have extra size, length and a style. We have been fortunate that they do tend to throw more females but the bulls have been standouts as well, selling to our best bull customers. Some of the first Simmental embryos we sold to Peter and Charmaine Cook of Australia were full siblings to 5W. 5W produces huge numbers of excellent embryos and then breeds right back every time. • Homo Polled • Black • Purebred • Female A.I to RJY Chrome 6B on March 30, 2017. RJY 7C - Daughter Sold to Meadow Acres

22

Probably one of the all-time exciting days was when this red heifer calf was born. The first Red Signature! 3X has lived up to her family tree. This female has raised great bulls and females and the first one on the list to keep was her daughter by Spartan that will be shown as a two year old pair this fall. 3X raised the Spartan daughter that sold at Agribition to Meadow Acres in 2015, an outstanding Spartan son that sold last year out of the stall at Farm fair to Shawn McLaughlin and has two outstanding sons in the sale. This cow was flushed to Casino and the results are excellent. 3X is destined to be a full time donor cow for whoever steps up to buy her. With her production, pedigree and physical greatness this is one of the very top Red cows we have raised. • Homo Polled • Red • Purebred • Female A.I to KOP Spartan 113A on March 20, 2017. RJY 39D - Son Sold to Shawn McLaughlin

This exciting bull just solidifies our belief in cow families. We knew that we had something special when we bought MDR 94Z and she proved it right away with Casino. I could not wait to flush 3X to him and we were not disappointed. I feel this guy has the ability to become a powerful herd bull with his mass, rib shape, muscle and soundness. Anytime you can find one with proven power cow families on both sides of the pedigree and this kind of phenotype it’s time to seriously try your hardest to own him or get a part of him, you will not be disappointed. • Homo Polled • Red • Purebred • Male Consigned By High Country Cattle

The Irresistible cow family is one of our favorite red cow families. Unfortunately there were not a lot of them because they love producing high end bulls. This great cow has sons working in a lot of our best bull customer’s herds and all sold at the higher price range. 25X had a great son that went to Ben and Kasandra Farrant’s purebred herd and what a job he did for them raising high selling bulls and great daughters for them. The IPU Revolution bull has been monumental in building our cowherd and no wonder with a mother like Noremac 16M as a dam. We have retained a solid red Spartan daughter, her first daughter ever born. Irresistible is one that can get it done, mark her high. Once again buy them for what they can do for you, 25X has been one of our best. • Homo Polled • Red • Purebred • Female Observed bred to IPU 68M Vegas 6D on March 30, 2017. The May cow family stems back to a cow we bought as a heifer calf for Matt Jansen . She was second last in the sale order but we had seen in past years what the Bar 15 Copper bull had done for Matt. We thought she was the best Baldy that sold that year and she has been an absolutely unreal producer. The Pocahontas cow family became one to try to add to the cow herd as we feel it is one of the elite. We purchased half interest in the 71T cow as a yearling at Agribition from Robb Farms. That gave us the breeding piece that brought the Pocahontas 105L linage and true to form did it ever work. We purchase the Master Link bull out of the States because he is out of the legendary NJC Ebony Antoinette cow. His females were outstanding. Once again we combined two great cow families for a strong pedigree. • Polled • Red • Purebred • Female Observed bred to RJY Casino 11C on April 18, 2017. I have always liked the design of this cow. She is very sound in her makeup. We bought her dam to bring in the Wheatland 131L bulls influence and it has not disappointed. Just check out her heifer calf and I am sure you will see the value of this female. • Polled • Black • Purebred • Female Observed bred to KOP Spartan 113A on April 7, 2017. Another exceptional breeding piece here, this Spartan daughter is outstanding. She is one of the top show potential females in the sale and will go on to be an outstanding cow with volume, rib shape, length soundness. I can only imagine what she will look like as a two year old, stunning. Juniors have a good look at this one. • Polled • Red • Purebred • Female Consigned By High Country Cattle

We are keeping Jag’s dam but thought it was important to have a son of Chrome in the sale. This bull calf has a real nice muscle pattern. His dam is a female we bought out of the Shades sale from the Ashworth family. Her dam was a female we tried to purchase when she was the high selling female at Shades several years earlier. We have been very happy with our calves buy Chrome and like how he adds rib shape and soundness in structure, all the things Jag has. • Polled • Black • Purebred • Male Consigned By High Country Cattle

We sampled Combustible when he arrived on the scene and this is a good one with a very nice udder and a real nice rib shape. Unfortunately I steered her younger aged bull calf and he turned out to be one heck of a steer! Judge her for what she is and I am sure you will agree she will make a nice addition. Her dam will be flushed here this spring and is going to be major piece of our future. Do not let this one get away. • Polled • Black • Purebred • Female A.I to RJY Chrome 6B on March 20, 2017. 62D is going to be a producer I am sure. The combination of Spartan and 49A just cannot miss. We are keeping the full sister this year and she is a very nice heifer as well. We have a great appreciation for this cow family and are looking forward to mixing it with our Signature cow family. It’s all about what you have or want and blending it to make the next great one. • Polled • Black • Purebred • Female A.I. to LFE The Riddler 323B on March 30, 2017. This is the youngest Powerdrive female in the sale and I would say after you go through the influence and what the old guy brings to the table people will find this one. She is a transplant daughter of a great Red Canadian daughter Stacy bought from Jim and Gwen Smith. Woopie Cow Family

I purposely saved this gem to end the catalogue. This female comes from the dispersal of the late Lyle Peterson. Lyle had the desire and want to become a great Simmental breeder and many will not know him but I really appreciated his desire to find the good ones. We tried to buy several cows out of the sale and unfortunately did not get them but bought this little heifer calve for $900 and look at her now. It’s no wonder when you look at her pedigree with all the great females in her pedigree she has turned into a great breeding female. I have no doubt that everyone will find her. I always say to young people when they start out to try buying a good one as cheap as you can, but do not buy a cheap average one, and here is a great example. • Polled • Red • Purebred • Female A.I. to RJY Casino 11C on March 27, 2017. This is one I just love and will have a hard time letting go. I can only imagine what the potential of this great Spartan daughter will be. This one’s design is one that I think will work with so many bulls and make them look good. Her structure, feet and rib shape is what I like to see in a future donor. The maternal strength in her pedigree is outstanding. • Polled • Red • Purebred • Female A.I. to Wheatland Current Affair on April 1, 2017. Exposed to MAF Brinks 49B from April 15 to May 9, 2017.
