Sento is the traditional Japanese public bath. In the 6th century, Sento was started as a place where purify for a monk. In the Edo era, it was shifted for the citizen, and it started collecting fees. In the Edo era, it was not separated man and woman, so they took a bath together. At present, you should go through the entrance same as Your sex. As you see on the bottom pictures, left one is for man, right one is for woman entrance.

I went to Ume no yu in the Kemigawa near the Makuhari. This Sento has been opening since Taisho era (about first of the 20th century), so it has very long history. The external appearance looks like temple. This is the one of feature of it.

Written by Saki Nechijima

In front of the entrance, you can see Noren which is written the Japanese letter “Yu” in  the  center.  Noren is the curtain when Sento get ready to open, it shows in the front  of  the  entrance.  “Yu”  means  bath.  So  if   you see this Noren, Sento is open.

After through Noren, you should take off your shoes and put into shoe cupboard. When you close it you can hold the plate which is written the number. It is the key for lock the  shoe  cupboard,  so  don’t  lose  it.  And   then you should trough the entrance same as your sex.

Then you  see  her  sitting  in  custodian’s  seat   which  is  called  “Bandai”.  You  should  pay  a  fees   for her before you take bath. She is so cheerful  and  has  very  good  smile,  so  don’t  be   nervous if you are first time to go there.

After than you should undress your clothes and put into locker same as shoe cupboard. If you don’t  have  soap  or  towel,  you  can  buy   them  there,  so  don’t  worry.

Finally you can enter the bathroom. Before you soak in the bathtub, you should wash your body in  order  to  don’t  make  dirty  it.

After washing your body, you can soak in the bath tub. When you look the wall, you can see the beautiful paintings. This is the traditional style of Sento. Paintings are different between  man’s  bathroom  and   woman’s  one.  Bottom  painting  of  Mt.  Fuji  is   in  the  woman’s  room.  Unfortunately,   number of the painters for bathroom is increase now. Only two people can paint in the Japan. So it is the problem to protect the traditional job now.

There are some types of bathtubs. Pelting water, medical bath, Jacuzzi and so on . In Ume no yu, there is an open-air bath at outside of the bathroom. Unfortunately, you can’t see  the  beautiful  view,  it  seems  like  you  are  in  the  hot  spring. Generally, you can take bath until Sento closes, so you can relax as much as time allows.

In the man’s  bathroom,  you  can  see  the  painting  of   tree  on  the  wall.  This  tree  is  called  “Miracle  Lone  Pine   Tree”.  When  the  Tohoku  Earthquake  (2011/3/11),  one   of the most damage place Rikuzentakata got big affect by Tsunami. Almost all things were washed away a moment. By a great piece of luck, only tree was remained entirely. Many Japanese people were glad at news and everyone said it is miracle. So Rikuzentakata people tried to remain it and made it to be a symbol of  the  earthquake  in  order  to  don’t  forget  it.

I interviewed proprietress about this painting. She said “It  is  very  important  that  telling  people  about   this sad disaster to remain in their heart or memory. We  don’t  have  great  power  to  do  it,  however  I  think   we only do it through our Sento, so we decided changing  painting  to  “Miracle  Lone  Pine  Tree”  which  is   symbol of that earthquake. “

One of the man who regular visitor is posting a blog about Ume no yu. Some people who comes from Tohoku access it and know about their activity. To see this painting, several people visited there.

After take a bath, you can relax in the locker room. There are sofas, TV, drinks, washing machines, magazines and so on. You can chat with people who never met. It is the one of fun in Sento.

Proprietress said many old people who live alone. They are happy to come here and have fun with people who is same situation in life. Here is the big community place for not only old people but also young people.

In the  past,  almost  all  citizen  didn’t  have  bath  by  themselves,   so they wen to Sento. However, recently every house has bath, so  they  doesn’t  need  to  go  there. It is a problem that decrease number of Sento with almost all house have a bath. As I said, number of the painter for bathroom also decreasing now. Sento is very important culture in Japan, so we should protect them as a traditional.

Proprietress also said sometimes foreigner comes here. Japanese old people are very kind and friendly, so they talk to foreigner. Of course they can’t  speak  English,  but   they want to talk to foreigner to tell how wonderful Sento is. So if you would like to go Sento,  don’t  worry.  People  in   Sento are everyone very kind. You should pay attention that almost all Sento bans enter who has tattoo on their body. As I said, Sento is one of te traditional culture in Japan. If you are interested in in, people in Sento welcome you!
