Who We Are The Father’s Day/Mother’s Day Council, Inc., is a not-for-profit, non-commercial, all volunteer association. The mission of the Father’s Day/Mother’s Day Council is to promote the celebration, observation and preservation of the holidays Mother’s Day and Father’s Day by focusing America’s attention on the value of good sound parenting. The Council proudly recognizes role model Mothers and Fathers with “Outstanding Mother” and “Father of the Year” awards. In addition, while promoting parenthood, the Council concentrates its energies on highlighting and contributing to contemporary issues and charities that affect Mothers, Fathers, and Families.

What We Do The Council developed the “Father of the Year” awards program for purposes of recognizing Fathers who portray and epitomize family, citizenship, charity, civility and responsibility in their everyday lives. These fathers have not only achieved success in their chosen fields, they have also found the time to be role models in raising their children. This recognition is not only meaningful to the father being recognized, but to all those who value the father’s contribution – family, friends, colleagues, business associates and members of the community.

What We Stand For Diabetes affects more than 25.8 million children and adults nationwide. As leaders in the fight against the deadly consequences of diabetes, the mission of the American Diabetes Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes. Since 1999, the Father’s Day Council has provided exclusive rights to the American Diabetes Association for purposes of conducting “Father of the Year” events across the country – in support of its efforts to fund essential advocacy, education and research initiatives. To date, more than $30 million has been raised to fund the life-saving work of the American Diabetes Association.

Congratulations to the 2017 Fathers of the Year! The Father’s Day Council® and the American Diabetes Association® welcome you to the 2017 Father of the Year Awards. Thank you for your steadfast commitment to your family, to your community and to the fight against diabetes. We honor you and extend our heartfelt thanks for all your efforts that enrich the lives of others. Diabetes touches everyone. It’s a complicated, relentless disease that hurts too many of our loved ones, neighbors, coworkers and community members. With your help, The American Diabetes Association can continue to full our mission to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of people living with diabetes. Thank you for sharing our vision of a world free of diabetes. We remain strong because of your generosity. The money raised tonight will power vital initiatives to advance diabetes research and advocacy, drive health care excellence and promote total wellness for people living with or at risk for diabetes. Your support empowers us to: equip health care providers to enhance the quality of care for all people with diabetes; improve access to affordable, quality health care; fight discrimination; promote the power of prevention; and ignite the next big discovery in diabetes science. Again, thank you for standing with us and congratulations on this Father of the Year Award!

Sincerely,

David DeMarco, PhD Chair of the Board

Welcome to Orlando’s 2017 Father of the Year Awards! Congratulations to the four special dads we honor at this year’s Father of the Year Awards – Isaac Lidsky, John Lowndes, Dr. Vipul Patel and John Race. Each of them is a remarkable citizen in our community and an exemplary family man. Since 1999 the American Diabetes Association has recognized men nationwide who have achieved success in their chosen endeavors, who are good citizens and leaders in their communities, and who exhibit strength, commitment and love as fathers. These Father of the Year events have raised over $40 million dollars, including hundreds of thousands of dollars raised each year in Orlando, directly supporting the work that the American Diabetes Association has been doing for more than 70 years. Your dollars are critical. More than 29 million people in the United States have diabetes, and at least 1 out of 3 people will develop diabetes in their lifetime, costing a staggering $245 billion in total medical costs and lost wages for those diagnosed with the disease. Unbelievably, 1 out of 4 people don’t even know they have diabetes. By honoring Isaac, John L., Vipul and John R., you recognize the remarkable accomplishments of these four men and also help the American Diabetes Association with its mission – to lead the fight against the deadly consequences of diabetes through research, education and advocacy. With my sincere thanks for your generosity,

Aaron J. Gorovitz Chairman of the Father of the Year Advisory Council and Shareholder at Lowndes, Drosdick, Doster, Kantor & Reed, P.A.

Dear Father of the Year Award Recipients, families and guests, It is my privilege, on behalf of the American Diabetes Association® Research Foundation, to congratulate the 2017 Father of the Year Award honorees and warmly thank everyone for attending this evening’s annual dinner. A father’s devotion and guidance profoundly impact the lives of his children and the community at large. Every day you demonstrate love to your family, you help make the world a better place. And with the generous support you provide to the American Diabetes Association, you are also helping nearly 30 million people across America live longer, healthier lives. Funding research that sparks new discoveries remains a priority of the Association. It is one of the critical mission-drivers that make us the only organization dedicated to improving the lives of all Americans with diabetes. Since its inception, the Association has taken the lead in bringing together the world’s foremost diabetes experts to collaborate on novel research. Today, thanks to decades of critical research made possible through supporters like you, the technologies that were once theories developed in a lab are real and changing lives. We have improved forms of insulin, a plethora of blood glucose–lowering oral medications, continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps, effective treatments for diabetic retinopathy, and so much more on how to help people with diabetes and those at risk to be as healthy as possible. We are forever grateful for such extraordinary accomplishments, yet we are cognizant that there is much more work to do. Diabetes is still a dangerous and challenging disease that harms too many of our loved ones. You have my assurance that the American Diabetes Association will not let down its guard in the fight against diabetes. Again, thank you for your ongoing commitment to your family, your community and to our mutual vision of life free of diabetes and all its burdens. Very truly yours,

Orville G. Kolterman, MD Chair, American Diabetes Association Research Foundation

A LETTER FROM OUR PRESENTING SPONSOR June 7, 2017 Welcome! On behalf of the more than 300,000 Floridians living with diabetes, I’d like to thank you for attending this evening’s annual Father of the Year Awards Dinner and supporting the 2017 honorees in this honor and cause. Congratulations to Isaac Lidsky, John Lowndes, Dr. Vipul Patel and John Race! This honor recognizes the very important role you play in your families and our community. Thank you for your leadership. Diabetes is the #1 chronic health crisis in our country. As many as 1 in 3 of our children today will have diabetes as adults, if present trends continue. As a father, and a past recipient of this award, that is an upsetting statistic- One that we must work to change. I have seen firsthand the devastating complications of this disease and what it can do to an individual and their family. Only by working together can we make a significant impact. Hill Gray Seven is proud to join the American Diabetes Association in the fight to STOP diabetes. Thanks again for attending this evening. Your dollars help the American Diabetes Association move the needle towards their vision- A life free of diabetes and all its burdens. With Sincere Gratitude,

Gregg Hill CEO, Hill Gray Seven, LLC

Issac Lidsky

As Inc. recently reported, “Isaac Lidsky may possess the most eclectic resume in business. Over the years, he has been a child television star [(he played series regular “Weasel” on NBC’s “Saved By The Bell: The New Class”)], a Supreme Court clerk [(for Justices Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg)], and the co-founder of an internet startup. More recently, Lidsky has used his gift for logistics to build ODC Construction into one of the fastest-growing construction businesses,” transforming an unsophisticated $11 million concrete subcontractor that was hemorrhaging money into an industry-leading $150 million constructionservicescompany—in5years.Inc.Magazine,TheIncredibly Inspiring Journey of a Blind Entrepreneur, October 1, 2015. The full list of his accomplishments is far longer. Lidsky graduated from Harvard at 19 with an honors degree in mathematics and computer science. He graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude. As a U.S. Justice Department lawyer, Lidsky argued more than a dozen appeals in federal court on behalf of the United States and never lost a case. He founded a nonprofit organization to fund the development of treatments for blinding diseases and within 5 years grew it to a dozen cities nationwide and more than $5 million. The technology company he founded sold for $230 million. In 2016 Lidsky set out to share with others his empowering approach to living and leading, and he was promptly recognized as a visionary thought leader. Penguin Random House acquired for publication his first book, Eyes Wide Open, and TED invited Lidsky to present a mainstage TED Talk at TEDSUMMIT 2016 in Banff, Canada. Lidsky now speaks to and works with organizations around the world. He has been recognized for his achievements dozens of times and his leadership is routinely sought after. He is an advisor to a $1+ billion tech “unicorn.” He is a member of the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), the world’s premier peer network of chief executives and business leaders, and was tapped to lead the Orlando Chapter and to serve on the Regional Executive Committee for the Southeast U.S. and Caribbean. He was asked to join the Young Entrepreneur Council. He has been appointed to State leadership positions by the Governor of Florida and to a federal position by a U.S. Senator. He sits on the Board of the Florida Hospital For Children. He was named 1 of 4 Temple Bar Scholars by the United Kingdom’s Inns of Court and brought to London for a month-long idea exchange with UK Supreme Court Justices and leading barristers. Perhaps most striking, Lidsky is only 37, and he is blind. Born with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a rare degenerative disease of the retina, from age 12 to 25 he slowly lost his sight. As his bio makes clear, neither his youth nor his blindness have limited him, however. This is true in his professional life and personal life alike. Isaac married Dorothy, the love of his life, in June 2004. In September 2010 she gavebirthtotheirtriplets,LilyLouise,PhineasandThaddeus—collectiv “TheTripskys”—andinDecember2015babyClementinecompletedthe family. The Lidskys 6 live in Windermere, Florida. Unsurprisingly, Lidsky has been featured in numerous national media, including Forbes, MSNBC, U.S. News & World Report, 60 Minutes, CNN, Voice of America, Business News Daily, Daily Business Review, Business Insider, Men’s Health, People Magazine, the National Law Journal, and the American Bar Association Journal. He is regularly asked by the media to provide his commentary on the construction industry, leadership and/or entrepreneurship. Invariably, his story shines through his commentary, and with his story, great inspiration.

Clients. Community.  These are the things that John is most passionate about.  He is the proud father of five children and grandfather of 10 grandchildren.  John’s hard work and leadership led to him building the largest law firm in Central Florida.  As the firm grew and prospered, John never lost sight of supporting the community in which he became successful and always encouraged firm members to volunteer and assume leadership roles in Central Florida community organizations.  In 2000, the home of the OrlandoUCF Shakespeare Festival in Loch Haven Park was renamed the John and Rita Lowndes Shakespeare Center in honor of their generous support of the arts in Central Florida.  Every year, firm employees contribute an aggregate of more than $100,000 to the United Way Campaign, one of the many organizations the firm supports.

PREDIABETES

WHAT IS IT AND WHAT CAN I DO? What is prediabetes? Prediabetes is a condition that comes before diabetes. It means your blood glucose levels are higher than normal but aren’t high enough to be called diabetes. There are no clear symptoms of prediabetes. You can have it and not know it.

If I have prediabetes, what does it mean? It means you might get type 2 diabetes soon or down the road. You are also more likely to get heart disease or have a stroke. The good news is that you can take steps to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes.

Regular physical activity can delay or prevent diabetes Being active is one of the best ways to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes. It can also lower your weight and blood pressure, and improve cholesterol levels. Ask your health care team about safe ways of being active for you.

How can I delay or prevent type 2 diabetes?

One way to be more active is to try to walk for half an hour, five days a week. If you don’t have 30 minutes all at once, take shorter walks during the day.

You may be able to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes with:

Reaching a healthy weight can help you a lot. If you’re overweight, any weight loss, even 7% of your weight (for example, losing about 15 pounds if you weigh 200) may prevent or delay your risk for diabetes.

■ ■

physical activity, like walking weight loss if needed – losing even a few pounds will help taking medication, if your doctor prescribes it

Weight loss can delay or prevent diabetes

If you have it, these steps may bring your blood glucose to a normal range. But you are still at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes.
