01_CANTERA PENINSULA MASTER PLAN

Course Tittle: ARCH4020 Advanced Design II Year: Spring 2018 Faculty: Federico Bares/ Jaime Suรกrez

This project starts off with the selection of an underdeveloped green area in the capital city of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The site selected works as the back of the community of Cantera, a peninsula surrounded by the San Jose Lagoon. Issues in destrian] complexes in the

accesibilty [vehicular and pesubsegregation of housing and security are adressed master plan development.

The urban design idea is to generate a water park in order to give it a maritime front. The park has three main zones that corresponds to the transversal boulevards. A fish-market, sports and cultural facilities are located along the park as well as pools and water activities are connected by a boardwalk. The housing typology proposed is a mixed used one with courtyards and vistas to the lagoon.

02_CIRCUITO MACEO

International Competition: Atelier International de Architecture Construite (AIAC) 2017 Year: Spring 2017 Faculty: Maria Isabel Oliver

The site chosen to design for the 2017 AIAC competition was Maceo Park located in the Central Havana, giving front to the Malecon, a pedestrian strip along the way all to the Old City side. Central Havana is a densified mass of three to five levels average block buildings. The whole area lacks of green spaces. Maceo Park is a masive hardground plaza divided of the Malecon by a highway.

The concept of the circuit is to link the project to the green system of city that includes: boulevards, plazas, parks and green zones. The proposed boulevard starting from the grounds of University of Havana going up to the site which is articulated as an extension of the Malecon with a park zone, a gazer and a plaza. A cultural center anchors in the grand public space with open floor plan shading the plaza.

03_PUBLIC SPACES WORKSHOP

Social Workshop: Latinamerican Social Workshop (TSL) Chucuito-Puno, PerĂş Year: March 2018 Instructor: Arch. Enrique Villacis Taller Social Latinoamericano is a workshop held by the CLEA organization. During 10 days architecture students from all Latinamerica countries assist to lectures, city tours and site visits. Delegates are mixed and distributed in groups that conforms different thematic workshops. The last week of the workshop were required to design and work in site to build a recreational space for to the local town of Chucuito using local materials. The design was conceived by the stars and the natural paths of people in space, orienting a stone wall that coincided with the north axis south. Thus with these two elements, stone walls, hills and hollows of grass, a coherent and non-conductive occupation of the place was achieved, also applying a geometrical base of rigorous proportions. The hills and deaths ended up being what people feel they should be, places to meet and stay and or multiple scenarios.

04_TERRACE AVENUE

Course tittle: ARCH4030 Advanced Design III Year: Fall 2018 Faculty: Eduardo Rolón - Brigida Hogan

Terrace Avenue is a residential building located in one of the main arteries of the capital city of San Juan, Juan Ponce de León Avenue. The characteristics of this avenue is the discontinuity of an urban wall, the surroundings of “El Caño Martin Peña” and a channel that conects San Juan Bay with San Jose Lagoon. A particular element that is taken into consideration in the process of design is that the mangroove soils presents a challenge through the design development. The design is based on the urban wall concept, but scarving out mass to generate spatial voids. These voids are aimed to connect the different spatial levels. Each apartment unit has open terrace that are projected over the void. A total of 10 typlogies have been developed. The bulding has a total of 14 stories. The first level of the building is aimed to be public use with retail spaces. The communal level is on the 4th and has a garden, a grand terrace for multiple use and a room for activities.

05_PENGPU VILLAGE No. 1

Course tittle: International Summer Program in Architecture: Cities in Asia Year: Summer 2018 Faculty: Darren Zhou - Nik Koon

PengPu New Village was built up in times of industrialization for nearby factory labours. The building consist of 5 story with a total of 35 units. Each unit has 3 different size rooms with a kitchen and bathroom. Nowdays, the building has outgrown its capacity creating poor living conditions, bad higiene and loss of privacy. Each room has a household with up to 12 people sharing a small area. The new proposal design aims to expand the building’s livable space area defining its public, private and circulation zones. The services areas (kitchen and bathroom) are re-arranged creating a central living space. A new corridor is defined with platforms attached to the units. These platforms are thought to be flexible depending on each user. Open terraces, extra room spaces, vestibules, gardens or void space could be the function of these platforms. Void space creates a dynamic space of double heights and light entrances.

40

Ocuupation Diagram

Through out years, without proper management and regulations, dwellers have installed new structures on building envelop, littered the path and or have rent out the space. Beside old households, new dwellers [the migrants], increases density of houselhold members causing issues of occupation, hygiene and living conditions. These issues creates a gap between migrants and locals.

Hu Kou system divides residents into 2 categories: locals and migrants. Locals can receive more wellfares from government directly and can have ownerships and property rights. However, migrants have less rent guarantee, rights or security. Housing units on lower levels have cheaper rents, thus more locals can afford top levels while migrans often live on bottom levels. From top to bottom, hierarchy is established with locals on top; the lower the level, the lower the social statue. Partition in a floor defines number of households in one apartment unit. One room may live 1 household with 3 up to 5 members. Thus a unit of 3 rooms, may have 12 people aprox. sharing communal spaces like kitchen and bathroom. Occupancies in lower levels tend to occupy public lands on the main street. Adaptive structures are used to fill up the balcony space or to create more partitions. This temporary occupation of space occurs mostly on lower levels.

Course tittle: ARCH2010 Design Fundamentals I Year: Fall 2014 Faculty: YazmĂn Crespo

This project explore the architectural design through a urban building typology of partition walls. Precedents are studied previous this final excersice. The architectural design must showcase the merge of two precedents. Peter Eisenman with the House VI and Milam Residence by Paul Rudolph are precedents of study. To showcase both precedents the design strategies are the intermediate levels connected spatially and the grid structural walls. The context of the invented site is a park in one face and the beach in the other face of the site.

Competition: HABS Peterson Prize Measured Drawings Competition 2017 Year: Spring 2017 Instructor: Claudia López - José Lorenzo Caa Vives represents a well-preserved example of XIX century residences and due to its craftmanship, construction methods and techniques employed it has statewide architectural significance. The property characterizes a typical urban typology in Puerto Rico of residence at the second level or piano nobile and commercial spaces at the ground level. Built in brick masonry, this two stroy neoclassical residence sits in a corner lot, between two main commercial arteries in Ponce, two blocks away from the main square. The façade design recognize the building’s dual purposes: commercial and residential.

Course Tittle: ARCC 0202 Sketching Year: Spring 2017 Faculty: Juan VelĂĄzquez

Course final assignment was to select a microimage of something as the first step of the design process to then make the object. Human eye retina is made of photoreceptor cells; the rod cells and the cone cells. Vision at low light levels is possible by rod’s, the yellow colored cells. Cone cells are resposible for space perception accuracy. The eye object consist of one small ring, representig to outer part of the eye while the inner part is defined by a another big ring. The cells are represented by the colored sticks that join both rings. The object emulates the the cells tied together receiving light functioning to make vision possible.
