MUSIC SPOTLIGHT The Hoe And The Harrow From A Slow Whispering Waltz to a Fully Distorted Grunge Influenced Flurry

T

he Hoe and The Harrow is an amazing local band based out of Anacortes. In the last couple of years, they have shaped their music to work as a duo on up to a sevenpiece band, featuring three new members on fiddle, mandolin, viola and vocal harmonies. While you can hear influences of Folk and Americana, their sound is very non-traditional and can range from a slow whispering waltz to a fully distorted grunge influenced flurry.

“Our favorite part of being a local band in Skagit County is our tight-knit community. Playing music can be cathartic, but being able to share our music with the local community, well it makes it just that much more enjoyable. ~ Ben Goe You can purchase their album, Blue North at their shows, local music shops and on their website. The Hoe & The Harrow

Anacortes, Washington

About The Band

While this lyrically driven music is written by James Harper, each member and instrument contribute to the overall tone that gives this band such an eclectic sound. Ben Goe and Keith Boller work together to create the bass and cello parts, and Ben writes a lot of the instrumental melodies. James works with Matt Harding on drums to work out rhythm parts. Kyle Miller and Channing Waage write out the sheet music for the viola parts and use music theory to create beautiful vocal harmonies. Arielle Luckmann is a seasoned pro on fiddle and adds a nice high-end element to the band.

A GLIMPSE INTO THE PAST Tulips And Historic Barns This historic photo of the barn and field of tulips on Young Road was taken in the late ‘90’s by photographer Shirley Haley. Not only is it uncommon to see wine red, yellow, pink, white, and cream colored tulips all in one field, but the barn, which fascinated locals and tourists alike, has since been torn down. Even though this field rarely has tulips now, it’s beautiful past still lives on in this photo. Shirley Haley has been taking pictures of Skagit County ever since she first moved here in 1971. One of Shirley’s favorite things to photograph is flowers of all kinds, shapes, sizes, and colors.

She has found nothing captures the imagination more than the signature Skagit County flower: the tulip. The bright red and yellow fields stretching as far as the eye can see with the majestic mountains in the background is a sight to behold. You can find photos of all of the extraordinary scenes of the Pacific Northwest and the many wonderful flowers that grow here on Shirley Haley’s Online Portfolio http://shirleyhaley.com/

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Margaret Horak Local Artist Captures The Beauty Of Our Very Own Skagit County & Beyond

M

argaret Horak was introduced to watercolor painting in high school and rekindled her love for painting in 2010. She attended an Art Show in La Conner where she met Ruby Martin, a 93-year-old watercolor artist, who just so happened to teach watercolor classes every Saturday, all day! After attending her first class, she realized she needed to focus on doing what she loved the most... Painting! She also joined the Painted Ladies in Mount Vernon and the Anacortes Urban Sketchers group.

"Skagit County is a great place for artists to start and continue their careers. The community will help in any way they can, and I have met so many lovely people that really do support the arts. ~ Margaret Horak “I want to thank my husband, Ray, for always being so encouraging of my endeavors and the Painted Ladies for their continued support over the years," she told us with a twinkle in her eye. NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT The Friendship House Learn How They're Helping The Homeless Get Back On Their Feet

T

he Friendship House officially opened its doors 30 years ago and currently has two houses; one houses up to 24 women & children and the other houses up to 24 men. One of their unique differences is that they are the only place in Skagit County to have temporary housing for single men. The houses are maintained by the residents as it encourages a sense of ownership that leads to a feeling of stability.

All of the clothing donations go into a room where residents can find what they need. The clothing room is not just for residents. Anyone in need can come and take a few items twice a week. They also have three laundry rooms; one for each of the houses and one for bedding, towels, and blankets.

"We are helping to make the community safer by helping the homeless to get back on their feet." ~ Tina Tate, Executive Director The Friendship House allows residents to stay for up to three months. The house manager assists new residents by coming up with a step-by-step action plan to help them accomplish everything they need to get back on their feet. The Friendship House requires that all residents are kind to each other, remain sober, clean, and complete a daily chore to help with the maintenance of the homes and CafĂŠ to stay in their temporary home. To donate, please go to skagitfriendshiphouse.org/donate. Skagit Friendship House

The Yellow House

When you visit the Friendship House, you will notice a yellow house nearby. It is from this house, the Friendship House was born. One day, the woman who lived in the yellow house found a man looking through her garbage. She phoned up her friends and told them about the startling discovery. They said they had similar things happen to them. Feeling like it was their responsibility to provide for these people in need, the friends got together and started the first version of what became the Friendship House. Executive Director, Tina Tate explains, "They will be here whether we are here or not. Without a place to sleep and easy availability of food, people who are hungry may resort to stealing or dumpster diving because they are desperate. By taking care of their needs, we are helping to make the community safer by helping the homeless to get back on their feet.

The Bounty Of Farms In Skagit County $300 million worth of crops, livestock, and dairy products are grown in Skagit Skagit County is home to over 90,000 acres of active farmland. Why is farming so celebrated in our valley? Maybe it’s the 43 inches of rain we receive every year giving our landscape that beautiful lush green color or maybe is it the fertile and rich soil that encourages so many dedicated farmers to partake in our wonderful agricultural community.

Could it possibly be the support that local restaurants show by sourcing many of their ingredients from local farms? All of these reasons and more! We’re proud to say that a full list of all the reasons to farm in Skagit would be quite a long one.

The Bounty Of Our County

Food In Skagit

There certainly is something special about the food served in our county. The people we have to thank for this are the farmers that grow the delicious produce, the farmer’s markets that sell it, and also the restaurants, cafes, bars and other foodie places that serve it to us.

By supporting the local farms, farmer’s markets, and restaurants, we are not only strengthening our community but helping to keep our families healthy and our tummies full.
