Artist’s Statement

It is difficult to summarize a collection of work in a blurb

but I think if this portfolio could be reduced to but a few adjectives they would be crisp, bright, modern, and graphic. These descriptors are consistent through much of my work and reflective of my individual style and personality. In a world bombarding its audience with thousands of messages everyday, I feel that those communications that are kept bold and simple are the ones that stick in people’s minds. My work also strives to effectively marry concept with visual and creative copy, without losing sight of brand, target market, and business strategy - all crucial areas that I feel I have a passion for and strong understanding of. Everything is selling something - be it a product or a way of feeling, a print ad or a children’s book. My portfolio showcases a variety of media, messages, and communications.

Angiosperms: Flower Structures Protect Pollen Nearly half of the 80 different species of flowers or angiosperms studied close their petals or droop their petals downwards, depending on their particular structure, to protect the pollen inside of them from rain. This protection concept could be applied to product design to shield contents from the damaging effects of liquid. My graphic translation depicts how a city could shield itself from rain with an exterior shell, modeled after angiosperms, that opens and closes with the changes in the weather. This could be altered to show most anything that need be sheltered from liquid damage.

Origin of

Franklin Gothic

T

he typeface Frankln Gothic was originated by Morris Fuller Benton in 1902. It was christened after noted printer, author, and inventor Benjamin Franklin. Additionally, "gothic" is an archaic term refers to its sans serif style. It was originally ssued in five faces: Franklin Gothic regular, condensed, extra condensed, italic and condensed shaded.

F

ranklin Gothic is still a popular font today, often used in advertisements, newspapers, books, and billboards. Recent and current examples include its use on Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster EP, the logo for the Conservative Party of Canada, and it is the official typeface of The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

and Product

Packaged Emotions: Wittiness The rationale behind this project was to package a human quality. I chose the name ‘Wise Smackers’ because it is a play on words, “wise cracker”, and that led me to decide on the product through which the wittiness would be distributed. I feel that lip chap or “wit sticks” is an appropriate vessel for the quality because it would be used in the case of a debate or banter, when you are at a loss for words and want to come up with a smart aleck response in a hurry. The wit sticks can quickly be applied to the mouth for a quick-lipped wisecrack. Visually, I selected the hipster glasses as a logo because the hipster label is currently prominent in pop culture and because stereotypically hipsters are known for their snarky sarcastic remarks. I intentionally paid close attention to even small details like the irony of my caution warning – “Keep out of reach of hipsters”, implying that they naturally have more than enough wit. Other visual elements include my offbeat font, (much like fonts I’ve seen at stores such as Urban Outfitters), a duller colour palette to represent dry humour, and the talk bubble graphic.
