U21B

FINALISTS and INTERMEDIATE CLUB CHAMPIONS

Of all the transitions from season to season, the one that takes a team from an U18 comp to the U21s is possibly the hardest with the difference in age, maturity and more-often size, week in week out. And so it was for the U21Bs this season, as they moved up from the U18B competition as Premiers and Minor Premiers. Some pre-season wheeling and dealing in the transfer market saw us secure the services of some ex-A grade players in Lincoln Sharp, Harry Strudwick, Johnny Stav and Josh Weber who with the remainder of the squad from last year, I was confident that we could hold our own in what proved to be a very tight comp. Indeed, the U21B comp saw only 6 teams entered this year and meant that we all got to know each other pretty well, playing some teams three times and others four times over the course of the 18 rounds. Five wins, three draws and only one defeat in the first 9 rounds saw us on top, and certainly laid down a marker with the other teams in the comp that we were the team to beat. However, it was here that we lost Jake Davison as he joined the Army, then some injuries and holiday absences really starting to bite hard. The last eight rounds saw us only win twice more, with three draws and two losses finishing off the season. Nevertheless, in such a tightly contested comp where on any given Saturday anybody could be anybody, we finished the season a very credible second place behind Engadine Eagles. Disappointed at not maintaining our position as Minor Premiers until the end, we nevertheless entered the finals series in a buoyant mood still believing that we could go back-to-back Premiers. However, despite that belief, with 100% effort and commitment from the lads in both the semi and the prelim finals and vast amounts of possession in both games, ‘lady luck’ decided to go on holiday both Saturday’s and we disappointingly went down 3-1 in both games. The score line in both flattered our opposition to be fair, but sometimes it just ain’t meant to be. Regardless, a great first season in the U21 comp for many of the lads and it was a pleasure to be their Coach again; we will have another crack next year of course. Finally, thanks to Kenny Auld, our ever-present Manager for his timekeeping, encouragement and the ‘ice box’! Russ Strudwick Coach
