Set the Harvest Table

As the leaves transition to shades of crimson, amber and maize, it’s time to prepare your home for the holidays. Although it may be tempting to fast forward straight to Christmas décor, a holiday in Jennifer Ruple which we give thanks and celebrate the season’s bounty deserves its own day in the spotlight.

Here are some ways to make your Thanksgiving dining table a showstopper: • Start with a neutral or solid color runner or table cover, then pile on the pumpkins, plates and glassware. The neutral background will help to avoid a busy look. Use white plates and serving pieces to allow your beloved family recipes to take center stage.

• Play with color.

Reds, golds and browns are fall’s quintessential colors – give them an update by mixing in a complementary hue such as turquoise, green or purple. Boomers That Bless Giving Back to the Community

Mari Davies, Executive Director, Toledo Ballet Never in a million years did I imagine that I would lead an organization founded by such an iconic member of our community, Marie Vogt. Seventy five years ago, she brought to Toledo its Mari Davies first ‘Nutcracker,’ which has become the nation’s longest consecutively running annual ‘Nutcracker’ in the entire country.

As a member of a generation of women who generally married and became housewives and mothers, Marie forged a career by starting her own business – a dance school. And the rest is history.

But Toledo Ballet is so much more than its topnotch dance school and professional level performances. It not only has exploded its course offerings to include contemporary forms of dance (jazz, tap, hip hop, etc.) as well as fitness classes for the greater community; it has increased its outreach programs to best ensure that as many members of our community as possible have an opportunity to experience dance at little or no cost to them. From Toledo Public school children to youth with Down syndrome to at-risk youth at the International Boxing Club, Toledo Ballet is there to share with them the joy and the demands of dance. One of my greatest pleasures is forming partnerships with community organizations in order to share dance with them. I always say that we are only limited by our human resources and imaginations. There are more partnerships to be developed out there, and I’m eager to help make them happen.

That Wasn’t What We Planned A Sassy Boomer Girl Speaks Out! By Louise Crawford Kahle

When I heard the sound of my husband hitting the floor, I had no idea my life, as I knew it, had just changed. It was the Louise Crawford Kahle afternoon of Nov. 13, 2013, when my husband had a stroke just nine days after back surgery. He couldn’t walk. He couldn’t use his dominant hand. He couldn’t make himself understood. He couldn’t feel the right side of his face or body and he didn’t know when he needed to go to the bathroom.

Sixty days later I brought him home wearing adult diapers. He was not able to get many words out coherently and still unable to walk without me by his side. And to make things more fun, he was wearing a back brace that he would have to wear for the next three months.

Two years later he has made tremendous progress. He’s driving and learning to be lefthanded. His speech has improved although he still struggles to get some words out. This condition is called aphasia. It’s a disorder that occurs when the language part of the brain is affected by a stroke or head injury. I could share a great deal about that but now is not the time.

What I do want to share are the positive changes this not-so-positive event brought about in my life. Maybe the most important is

the increase in my self-confidence. I have learned that I can take control of any situation and do what needs to be done. I have learned to speak my mind because I have had to. I am more trusting of my opinion. I have learned to say, “No I don’t want to do that” more often.

I have had lots of time to reflect on what I want the rest of my life to look like. I want it to be as stress-free as possible. I know I can’t predict what tomorrow will bring but I know how I can react to it. I choose to live my life with joy no matter what happens. In fact, I want more joy. I want more fun. I want to laugh more, play more and read more books. I want to spend time with my husband and I want to make new friends and spend more time with old ones. I want to go on adventures with my husband, with my girlfriends and sometimes be all by myself. I will look forward to every day with wonder, expecting it to unfold exactly as it should and always for my benefit. The days of having goals for my job or business are over. These are my life goals and the important thing for me to remember is that I don’t have to work to achieve them; I just have to remember that I can choose them.

Sparkling Cape Cod A light cocktail that starts the conversation and keeps it going. ½ ounce vodka ½ ounce cranberry juice 3 ounces Champagne or Prosecco Orange twist In a highball glass with ice, add all ingredients and stir. Garnish with an orange twist.

Thoughts To Consider By Neil Garrison

Stay the Course During Spooky Times A pause before we move forward In order to stay in the game, it is important to understand down markets and the impact they have on your financial plan. If you have lost sleep over the last few weeks due to market conditions, it is likely Neil Garrison you have too much volatility relative to your tolerance for risk. Over the years, my experience has been that investors who make dramatic allocation decisions and “quit” the equity component, usually regret the decision in the future.

The bottom line is that your plan should help bring discipline during times of adversity. The same can be said in the game of football. For example, the Irish of Notre Dame were down 21-3 at Clemson going into the 4th quarter. In essence, the game was over except Toledo’s DeShone Kizer and the Irish had other thoughts regarding their dilemma. Most teams would simply give up; the Irish did not and almost found a way to tie the game at the end, despite a hostile crowd and remnants of Hurricane Joaquin creating havoc. The fans, players and coaches persevered through brutal conditions while each and every stoppage of play for revenue producing television commercials accentuated the elements. The Irish stuck with their game plan and did not quit keeping their long-term goals in reach if they win their remaining games. This scenario can be related to your financial plan. During emotional times in the marketplace, your plan can help you avoid potential decisions that can be detrimental to your overall long-term goals and objectives.

Gravity never loses As we started our trek back from Clemson to Myrtle Beach, we encountered rain like I have never seen in my lifetime. We stopped and chatted with a lot of locals and witnessed many homes under water and cars completely submerged. The rain accumulated and flowed very quickly to the low-lying areas without regard to property and life. We were very lucky to make it back safely and my thoughts and prayers go out to all of the people suffering in the Carolina’s. Obviously, investing and planning for retirement is nothing like the calamity in the

Carolina’s, however, we can gain some perspective with the world markets relative to water finding low level areas and valuations in the U.S. equity markets. Our equity markets were modestly overvalued; it was similar to driving a car 69 M.P.H. in a 65 M.P.H. speed zone. All we did was come down, as gravity always wins, to a more appropriate valuation given what has happened with earnings and geo political events. Furthermore, it appears we have re-tested the August lows creating a W pattern and that my friends is a healthy indicator.

What have we learned?

It is obvious, at this time, the Fed will not be raising interest rates anytime soon. Investors may begin to take comments from the Fed with a grain of salt as they comment about their desire to raise rates. We are entering the earnings season and the results will show significant reductions with numerous energy companies or perhaps anything yummy. It is important to note, if we take out energy companies, most of our earnings reports will be like Goldilocks…not too hot or too cold and modestly higher. With that, we can move forward after our current pause as the market begins to focus on the earnings picture for 2016. Remember, to stay in the game, stick to your plan, manage your expectations, and get your arms around the true risk within your investment plan. In conclusion, I leave you with the following quote, from an unknown author that was in our strategy report. “Dear optimist, pessimist, and realist, while you guys were busy arguing over the glass of water, I drank it. Sincerely, the opportunist.”

Sides dishes with celebrity status

The turkey may be the star of your Thanksgiving show, but all leading legends need a great supporting cast. This holiday, give your traditional holiday fare some sparkle by incorporating a couple of new side dishes into the mix. Here are two of my favorites. eggs and baking powder together and mix into Cornbread-Chorizo Dressing ¾ pound French bread, torn into bite-size pieces dressing. Spoon dressing into baking dish. Cover and bake 25 minutes. Uncover and continue 8 ounces chorizo sausage baking about 20 more minutes, until lightly 8 tablespoons unsalted butter browned and crusty on top.

2 cups chopped onions (Recipe adapted from Cheryl Alters Jamison, New Mexico 2 cups thinly-sliced celery Magazine) 1 - 1½ tablespoons crumbled dried sage 2 teaspoons dried thyme Cranberry Apple Relish 1 teaspoon salt ¾ orange juice ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper ¾ cup sugar 8-inch square pan of cornbread (made from a 15- ¼ teaspoon ground ounce package of cornbread mix), cinnamon crumbled coarsely ¼ teaspoon ground 3 - 4 cups turkey or chicken stock nutmeg 4 large eggs Dash ground cloves ½ teaspoon baking powder 1 12-ounce package Preheat oven to cranberries 375° F. Place 1 large apple, peeled and bread on cored baking sheet In a saucepan, combine orange juice, sugar, and toast in cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Cook and stir oven about 10 over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Add minutes, or cranberries and apples. Bring to a boil, reduce until golden heat and cook and stir for 3 or 4 minutes until brown and cranberries pop. Chill and serve. crisp. Set aside (Recipe from Jennifer Ruple) to cool, then place into large bowl.

Crossword Puzzle Solution Butter a 9 by 13-inch baking dish. Over medium heat, sauté chorizo in large skillet, breaking it into small bits as you cook, until well browned.

Drain well. Add butter to chorizo in same skillet, and melt over medium heat. Stir in onions and celery and sauté until very soft. Add sage, thyme, salt, and pepper, and add to bowl of toasted bread pieces. Add cornbread crumbles. Pour in stock a cup at a time, and mix together until bread is very moist but not soupy. You will probably use 2 to 3 cups of stock. Cover and refrigerate dressing until you are ready to proceed. (Up to this point, dressing can be made a day ahead.)

To finish dressing: taste and adjust seasoning and add a bit more stock if mixture seems dry. Whisk
