New York Therapeutic Communities Residential Substance Abuse Facility Fulton Street, Brooklyn, New York This four level existing building is a $6,300,000 "gut renovation" of an existing building. The facility provides separate outpatient services as well as a 50 bed male therapeutic community residential treatment facility. The building also contains a separate outpatient clinic. The facility provides health services, individual counseling, group counseling as well as dining, lounges, classrooms and administrative offices. The exterior was restored and the interior completely renovated. The building is a mid-block building and the two street perimeters offer the only sources of natural light and ventilation. The program requirements for natural light and ventilation for bedrooms require more perimeter area than afforded by the existing building. The design solution increased the perimeter area available for bedrooms by creating an interior court at the 2nd and 3rd floor levels. This court is used as an outdoor recreational area for the residents.
