INSPIRATION FROM NATURE

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES TO FACILITATE FLUIDITY IN DESIGN

“Headspace was an initiative taken in order to examine the relationship between the physical design process as well as digital 3D modelling and fabrication. The concept of ‘The Modern Florist’ stemmed from the idea of organic, fluid forms which maintain structural integrity as influenced by the use of modular elements. This project aimed to push the limits

of fluidity in form that can be achieved through digital modelling using programs such as Google Sketchup”

‘The Modern Florist’ manages to contribute towards a broader architectural discourse as it facilitates experimenting, designing, modelling and fabrication on a smaller scale which can provide initiative for larger projects. Experimentation in sculpture and paper modeling allows for the development of techniques applicable not only in architecture but also in other fields of design. Furthermore, through the digitization of physical modelling, a platform for prototyping is established, allowing further experimentation with the ability to achieve abstraction from nature as well as fluidity in form. The translation between what was achieved through computational tools into physical prototyping also communicates the ability to accurately model to scale and proportion and to use technology as tools to facilitate the design process. Additionally, the use of modular elements to inform the design is representative of ‘building blocks’ or molecules often seen in the natural environment, which aims to provide a precedent towards achieving organic form. This represents an interest in incorporating new ideas by learning from nature

PARAMETRICISM TO FACILITATE COMPLEXITY

MAXXI: MUSEUM OF XXI CENTURY ARTS The MAXXI : Museum of XXI Century Arts changes the way in which buildings are thought of as they are no longer single entities, but the building becomes a discourse in itself for a variety of functions. This idea is embodied within the structure itself through the use of lines to create a path of constant movement and flow integrating it very well with the urban setting. The building itself aims to function as a medium to communicate a design idea, one of using ‘parametricism’ in order to organise the increasing complexity of social institutions and to create a building which functions as a living institution (Schumacher 2010). This idea of facilitating art as a new platform for brainstorming on all kinds of issues related to various disciplines is what drives the firm to initiate an architectural response which also facilitates a new way of approaching spaces for social communcation. This building aims to change the notion of experiencing art as it encourages ‘drifting’ through exhibitions creating a dialogue between disciplines. By using divergence to showcase the art and architecture, the building becomes like an organism which is complex and can be read in multiple perspectives. In this sense, this state of the art building contributes to current architectural discourse as it is a redevelopment of architectural theory and understanding through engaging in computational tools.

“This speculative proposal posits an urban design methodology based on the emergent capacities of Swarm Intelligence in rethinking of the current redevelopment of the Melbourne Docklands.

Swarm systems involve the local interaction of autonomous agents, which give rise to emergent behavior and the self-organisation of structures.�

The Swarm Urbanism initiative is based on the characteristics of swarm systems in the natural environment whereby local interaction of autonomous agents give rise to emergent behaviours which can then establish self-organised structures Through the incorporation of swarm logic into urban design and planning, a master algorithm can be achieved using computation to aid in collecting information for urban design. As such a bottom up perspective of urban design and planning can be achieved which addresses the needs of each area specifically. As these systems are able to self-organise based on programmed imperatives, these new urban planning solutions will be flexible in response to the ever changing political, economic and social pressures of urban development (Kokkugia 2008). This idea contributes to architectural discourse as it flattens design hierarchy as all elements of the urban fabric become key to the design solution. Furthermore this idea accepts that agents in collecting information within the urban setting are constantly interacting and this complexity is reflective of the natural environment and how it should function. Additionally, this idea is one which suggests computational tools and programs to mimic nature in order to collect data and better plan cities in the future, a innovative solution which adds to the discourse of parametric design as a way to advance current design solutions
