INTRODUCTION Project Overview The goal of the project is to develop an understanding of design direction based on a particular marketplace, and to explore the formal possibilities of a three-dimensional form, with the integration of type, image and color. The project consists of 3 products from one product line. Although in reality the line may include many more than three, only three related product comps will be necessary to illustrate the overall design idea. Product Information

A product imported from Sicily, organic, non-GMO

Market: The product will be sold at specialty stores such as Dean & DeLuca and Williams Sonoma, which will command a higher price for this premium product. Aimed for upper-middle class women and college students interested in cooking with natural products. Concept Statement

In order to emphasize Sicilian culture while appealing to the market demographic, the packaging designs will have contrasting colors directly from Italian art and playful patterns.

• Create packaging designs to display varieties of pasta while remaining cohesive and systematic. • Grab inspiration from Sicilian culture in order to aid product in remaining close to its roots. • Display shapes of different pastas through packaging.

Most of the inspiration is pulled from Sicilian art and culture. Using bright contrasting colors and playful textures and patterns, the product will stand out on the shelf next to its competitors.

Shape of box allows more products to fit on each shelf. Product box also appears smaller than competitor boxes while helps it to stand out. The triangular prism shape also helps the product to be recognizable, distinguishable, and unique against competitors.

DESIGN RATIONALE Concept

Visually appealing patterns with interesting shapes, bright contrasting colors, and fluid, natural typography appeals to a wide variety of consumers by appearing unique and interesting on the shelf, but consistent and natural. The system also reflects modern Italian art and culture. Picking Mulino Organico for pasta needs just seems like the correct and natural choice for the consumer.

How Concept is Reflected in Final Design

FINAL

The colors are directly influenced by Sicilian art. The typographic system and patterns are built off of organic qualities that can be found in pasta, as well as throughout Italy. The packaging products are cohesive as a system, but are also interesting on their own. This concept is similar to the experience of visiting an Italian museum where the museum as a whole is fascinating, but the consumer/viewer looks at each piece individually.


FINAL COLOR PALETTE & TYPOGRAPHY Consistent Color

Color Palette Explanation

The box specific colors of orange, yellow, and green are all light, pastel and similar tints of different hues. Therefore, they appear very interesting and stand out when contrasting with a very dark color such as navy. All these colors are directly taken from Sicilian art in order to reflect the origins of the product.

Typography System

Type Treatment Explanation

The Chaparral Pro font family offers a variety of distinct weights. The Light typeface has natural elements that stand out when it is used as a display type. The different weights throughout this family feel cohesive, yet distinct. The Chaparral Pro family is also interesting with the handmade logotype. Overall, the typographic system helps the packaging to feel cohesive, natural, and playful.

PHOTOS OF FINAL BOXES

The series of pasta packaging is consistent through the shape of the box, the typographic system, and the treatment of the layout. But, each box is unique on its own through the color and distinct patterns. The series is also very different from other product packaging. The bright, pastel colors contrasted with the dark navy is unique amongst competitor’s pasta packaging. The packaging feels cohesive, refreshing, and playful while having interesting aspects that resemble Italian art.
