Dis laat in die aand. Ek het die kinders in die bed gesit, en die huis is meteens doodstil. Sou hy hom soos al die jare, tuismaak op sy gunsteling gemakstoel om uit sy Bybel te lees, of sou hy rugby terugflitse gekyk het en notas geneem het waar sy eie Suidwes span beter kon vaar. Sy lekkerste tye was natuurlik op Hentiesbaai, by ons strandhuisie se agter stoep se braai. Dikwels net hy, my ma en ek, want ek was die laatlam. Ons kon ure gesels oor die toekoms en drome. Pa was die beste braaier nog; sy skoene was altyd blink, hy het nooit voorgegee wat hy nie is nie en sy lojaliteit en passie was nie net by rugby nie, maar by die landbou industrie, die boere en sy land. Sy groot droom was ‘n plaas. Hy het my van respek geleer, vir jouself, die natuur en om ‘n pad met jou Skepper te stap. Sy gerusstellende figuur was gereeld langs die netbalveld. Hy het diep spore in sport en landbou geloop. Hy was ‘n man met baie deernis vir elke mens, ‘n groot inspirasie, vir elkeen wat hom geken het. Hierdie jaar sou hy 73 wees. Met Vadersdag hierdie maand, hoop ek elkeen van julle eer en waardeer jul vaders. Hulle is die standvastige ankers, wat voorsien, beskerm en leiding gee. Maak tyd om hom te vertel hoe baie hy beteken en hoe baie jy hom liefhet. Ek glo dat Housefinder – wat hierdie jaar 6 jaar oud is - net so ‘n groot impak op ander maak as my pa destyds. Housefinder is ‘n inspirasie vir baie se kookvernuf, renovasie projekte, die eerste saadtjies vir ‘n spogtuin, en idees vir ‘n spoghuis. Niks sou moontlik gewees het sonder ‘n puik span kollegas en natuurlik julle, ons getroue lesers. Ons resep het oor die jare nie veel verander nie, ons het net saam met die tyd gegroei, en waarop ons baie trots is – is hierdie maand se Winter Huis uitgawe, propvol idees en heerlike kos, en ‘n hele paar artikels vir ons pa’s. Trouble with the neighbours? What rights do you have when it comes to your neighbours? When is somebody's conduct considered to be a nuisance to his neighbours? By definition a nuisance occurs when a neighbour interferes with an owner's (or lawful occupier, e.g. tenant) use and enjoyment of his land. However, this interference must be unreasonable before it will be classified as a nuisance in the legal sense of the word. Therefore the interference with a neighbour's rights to the proper enjoyment of the rights associated with his property, will only be unreasonable (and therefore prohibited by the common law) if the reasonable man, acting in the same circumstances, will not have acted in this manner. Let's look at some particular cases that will be considered a nuisance. Please note that each case will have to be judged on its own merits, and therefore these are just some guidelines. Foul, unpleasant or noxious odours or stenches by their very nature cause discomfort and physical distress to people and may therefore be regarded as nuisance. Noise can adversely affect the physiological and psychological wellbeing of people. Therefore excessive noise is a nuisance against which legal action can be taken. The sounding of whistles, sirens or hooters by the Police or Ambulance in the execution of their duties cannot be a nuisance. Smoke, even if not accompanied by noise or foul odour, or even if it is not bad for your health, will amount to a nuisance if it materially interferes with a person. Animals will be a material interference if they are kept in a place or in circumstances that causes physical discomfort to other people. Municipalities are generally empowered to prohibit the keeping of animals which cause a nuisance or they can take steps to abate the nuisance. Trees are natural to plant and use on land. Generally the obstruction of natural sunlight by trees or the invasion of land by
leaves from trees is not a nuisance. However, a person may repel branches or roots of trees which intrude upon his land. The pollution of water so as to render it less potable or a danger to health or the environment can also constitute a nuisance. This will include the discharge of polluted water or fluids which interferes with the ordinary comfort of another person. A person may not prevent or affect the natural flow of water from his property to any lower lying property. The above are just some examples of nuisances. It is always better to discuss a possible nuisance with your neighbour first. See if you can come to an amicable solution. If that doesn't help, then legal action would be the next step. If you are causing the nuisance, just put yourself in your neighbour's shoes and see if you would be prepared to put up with the nuisance caused by you. After all, it's a case of common courtesy and decency. We can all live in complete harmony if we respect our neighbours as much as we respect ourselves.

Your great gas guide It is time to warm up your home, and with electricity prices soaring, gas has become a much more effective and economical way to cosy up your home this winter. Many people are scared of using gas though, so here are a few tips to make gas a user-friendly source of energy in your home:
• • • • • If your gas appliance is brand new, take a minute to read the instructions before you start to use it • If the appliance has not been used for some time, take a soft cloth and wipe off any dust that may have settled on burners or ceramic panels • Check that the jets haven't become blocked with dust or spider webs, which can make igniting difficult • Gas appliances needs plenty of fresh air, therefore, always keep a door or window open where possible • Check the connection hose from the appliance to the cylinder, if it looks worn or perished, let Afrox replace it for you • Never replace the hose with a common garden hose • Never test for a leak with a naked flame • Check the o-ring situated on the tip of the regulator where it screws into the cylinder valve, this is a small black rubber ring that ensures a perfect seal...if it's worn, either replace it yourself, or contact Afrox to do it for you • Remember that the regulator has a left-hand thread, thus connect the regulator to the cylinder in an anticlockwise direction • Do not hang washing over your gas appliance...check that curtains or other flammable objects cannot blow
towards your gas appliance, which could possibly catch flame....also make sure that the appliances are well clear of any furniture. Always switch the appliances off when moving it...preferably allow time to cool down before moving it. Install and service gas appliances by a qualified LPG installer Maintain gas meters and pressure regulators in a safe condition and free from damage Light a match or press ignition button before turning on your gas burner Your gas burner should produce a blue flame. Call a technician if the flame is yellow or red Store flammable items away from your gas appliances Switch gas appliances off when sleeping or leaving your home Keep outdoor gas appliances outside, don't use them indoors Flueless heaters require permanent ventilation.
Barbecues • Ensure your gas cylinder is tested and stamped by a qualified service person at least every 10 years • Check for gas leaks by spraying soapy water on the connection or hose and watch for bubbles (do not immerse in water) • Remove all combustible material from around the barbecue • Remove excess fat/oil from barbecue after each use • Do not use barbecue indoors or in a confined space. Cylinders • Gas cylinders should be maintained in an upright position and not exceed 9kg

Gas leaks If you suspect a leak, here is a simple tip (1) Take an ordinary paintbrush and a cup of soapy water. (2) Dip the brush into the solution and “paint” around every connection on the appliance and the cylinder; any leaks will show up immediately as the mixture will bubble to indicate the leak. (3) Switch off the appliance and close all valves, fix the leak or take it to your nearest Afrox authorized dealer for a safety check P l e a s e r e m e m b e r, a n y p e r s o n undertaking work involving gas must be appropriately licensed. If they split on you... So sad if that happens, especially if it’s your favorite fruit or shade tree! As is always the case, one worries and many questions are asked. It might help to know how it occurred and what to do to help prevent its recurrence. There are a variety of reasons for bark splitting on branches and trunks. Although the injury is not directly fatal to the tree, damage is caused by insects, bacteria and fungi settling in, resulting in secondary problems. Ignorance is hardly ever bliss and by understanding how the injury was caused, preventative steps can be taken to protect our loved ones. SUNSCALD A very common bark split injury of landscape trees, occurring during the winter due to large temperature differences in the bark during day and night, especially in many regions of Namibia. Cells thaw too rapidly as the sun heats the bark and they lose their protective cold hardiness. At night, with a severe drop in the thermometer, they freeze too fast once more and are injured or killed. Often injuries are noticed on the southwest side of trees where sun exposure is greatest during the winter. Young trees, fruit trees and trees with thin bark, like Maple for instance, are very susceptible to sunscald injury. It is advisable to wrap trunks from early winter with frost sheeting or hessian to prevent or at least minimize splitting. SUDDEN GROWTH Too much too soon, can be as bad as too little too late. Sudden growth after an extended dry spell and negligence can, more often than not, lead to bark splitting. Fertilizer applied too late in the growing season will also lead to rapid growth with possible negative results like bark splitting. A well balanced maintenance and feeding program is therefore essential. Efekto has a large range of fertilizers and your local garden centre will gladly
assist you as to when and how to apply these. IMPROPER PRUNING Cuts that remove the branch collar and are flush to the trunk increase the risk of cracks forming and decay entering the tree. Parts of a tree previously shaded over a long period can risk sunscald injury by too drastic exposure to sun. Rather prune in stages instead of removing too many branches at one time. PHYSICAL DAMAGE – cannot always be kissed right! These cannot always be seen, but will weaken a tree’s structure and very often lead to bark splitting. Be careful when planting trees or using a lawn mower close to the bark. Watch out for hail damage on trunks and branches and seal
these wounds with Efekto’s Steriseal – this is always a good idea with any wound, whether through pruning or otherwise. Unfortunately, lightning can also cause bark splitting and here the cell damage is mostly far too great and eventually the tree will die.
