Is a mediator the wizard in facilitating that elusive solution? What does it mean to say that mediators are neutral conflict resolvers? It appears to imply that mediators act as neutral and impartial brokers of settlement negotiations in a procedural sense. Mayer in his book Beyond Neutrality however suggest that most conflicts are actually resolved by the affording participants “third side” resources such as a provider, teacher, bridge builder, mediator, healer and peacekeeper. Without compromising impartiality some of these resources are often part of what a mediator provides. Mediators do not take sides with participants and do not decide who is “right' and who is “wrong”. Mediation is not able to change anyone's values. The process is not aimed to find fault, assign blame or punish anyone. Is competition always bad and cooperation always good in the mediation process? Not necessarily. Competition can be constructive provided that participants are ethical, wise, skillful and informed. As Mayer puts it “One of the greatest gifts conflict resolvers can give to people in conflict is to assist them in competing constructively when competition is appropriate.” Is it correct that the aim of Mediation is a win-win solution? Yes but as in most instances the mediation process commence at a stage when participants are overly conscious of only loss. The primary objective in mediation should thus be through the use of win- win language assist participants to generate options and solutions which
would bring about a resolution that is in the interest of everybody directly or indirectly involved. As the mediator can have access to more information than legal practitioners, it is possible to recognize the myriad of ways legal issues interacting with the participants lives can be resolved in a way best suited to everyone involved. Before agreement participants have a right to change their minds, to try out an option, or to make sure that the final result will be balanced and fair.

The mediator is also in a position to explore the consequences and risks of a failure to settle, provide an unbiased review of the issues and can facilitate a more realistic approach to the likelihood of success. Mediation does not force a settlement but may open up choices which did not exist before.
In mediation, at least initially, the conversation occurs between the mediator and one person at a time. While the mediator talks to one person, the other will be expected to listen. This may feel awkward at first as it is different to the normal communication pattern of people in conflict.
Mediation can thus, at the very least help participants to understand that the risk associated with litigation in the matter might outweigh the benefits of a mediated settlement.
This allows the mediator to ask questions that will assist the understanding of each participant's perspective.

The Effects of Rain on Swimming Pools Here in Windhoek, the rainy season is typically during the months of January, February, March, and April. We all love to have a rainy season and hope and pray for a good one this year, but you have to know a couple of things about rain effecting your swimming pool. A swimming pool experiencing an algal bloom. Swimming pools can turn green after a shower because of an infusion of nitrogen-enriched rain that provides the perfect breeding ground for algae. If left unchecked, that crystal clear swimming pool can turn green almost overnight if an algal bloom “blossoms.” At that point, the water is unusable for several days during the clean-up process. We provide you with 3 main tips for keeping the water clear and algae at bay. The three areas of pool maintenance to pay attention to are: disinfectant levels, proper circulation, and optimizing filtration systems. Maintain Proper Disinfectant Levels Usually, a small dose of chlorine and algaecide immediately after the storm is all that is needed to keep algae at bay. But maintaining proper disinfectant levels— chlorine level above 1 parts per million—is just part of the battle. The disinfection process also includes brushing the walls and floor of the pool to move the remaining algae particles into the circulation and filtration system. Instituting a weekly maintenance plan that includes adding a small dose of algaecide and brushing the walls and floor will help keep algae away. Maintain Proper Circulation Good circulation is essential to ensure proper filtration and the even disbursement of chemicals and disinfectant throughout the water. One of the most common mistakes that we observe at pools is the placement of

Ignorance is not always bliss! Gogga maak nie net vir baba bang nie, but unfortunately also most adults. The first of these are of course spiders and so often people come to garden centers to get “something” to get rid of them. Spiders are not insects, they don’t eat plants and therefore will not be affected by conventional insecticides sprayed onto plants. Spiders eat other insects, but not if they are already dead and secondary poisoning will not take place either. With the exception of pollinators, no creatures should be more welcomed into the garden than spiders as they control insect populations outdoors which in turn will mean fewer entering indoors. It is understandable that most of us would not want them as pets, there are many poisonous species in our part of the world, healthy respect for, and understanding of spiders is perfectly in order. PRECAUTIONS Spiders do not like the smell of citronella – use plants near windows or entrances such as Lemon Verbena, Lemon Grass or lemon scented Geraniums. Window sills can be sprayed underneath by adding 20 – 30 drops of citronella oil to ½ liter of water. Spiders will only bite if they feel threatened,
therefore always spread a blanket when sitting on the lawn. It would also be advisable to wear shoes and gloves when working in the garden. Educate children to “look, but don’t touch” and for adults to obey the same rule. GECKOS AND LIZARDS Spiders don’t just eat, they get eaten as well and here lizards and geckos play a very useful role. Apart from these, they control ant populations, termites, flies, moths, mosquitoes and fungus gnats. Being reptiles, most likely harm will be caused when using pesticides that might result in secondary poisoning when used to control their main food sources or pesticides that might cause bodily harm when they come into direct contact with them. Geckos often cause alarms to go off when stalking insects close to the alarm sensors. Efekto distributes a product called “GO GECKO”. It will not kill these adorable creatures, but simply repel them. It has no unpleasant odor, is environmentally friendly and will keep your home gecko free. SNAKES
and killing them is not the desired choice and can be dangerous. Efekto’s “SNAKE REPEL” is once again a silicon based product that will not kill the reptile, but deter it from entering the property or dwelling. PLANTS NOT LIKED BY SNAKES: Rue (very cold hardy and drought resistant), Plectranthus and Geraniums. Do not create snake friendly areas such as rubble heaps which will attract mice – an excellent food source for snakes. Should mice be a problem for any other reason, plant mint in your garden. They cannot stand the smell and will move away. To keep storage areas like warehouses mouse free, surfaces can be sprayed by adding 20 – 30 drops of peppermint essential oil to ½ liter of water.
