I am busy reading a phenomenal book, The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. The whole book is about the principals of doing small, seemingly insignificant things daily that will over time amount to something huge. Its about being Consistent with unsexy, unexciting, and sometimes difficult daily disciplines – and that will compound over time. The results, the life and the lifestyle of your dreams can be yours when you put the Compound Effect to work for you. The difference between people who employ the Compound Effect for their benefit compared to their peers who allow the same effect to work against them is almost inconceivable. It looks miraculous! Like magic or quantum leaps. After 31 months (or 31 years), the person who uses the positive nature of the Compound Effect appears to be an “overnight success.” In reality, his or her profound success was the result of small, smart choices, completed consistently over time. The most challenging aspect of the Compound Effect is that we have to keep working away for a while, consistently and efficiently, before we can begin to see the payoff. It’s the athlete that keeps practicing long after all others have stopped. It’s the person that makes deliberate decisions daily to eat healthy. It’s the one that walks extra every day and cuts out 100 kilojoules daily – that will have results over 1 year. It’s the person that feeds their mind with positive books / information versus the one that do not = that will result in better decisions on so many aspects of their lives. It actually compounded into all aspects in their lives, because of the ripple effect. Success is not a fast race, but the slow consistent walk that will over time have the results, like the tortoise. So many people want the quick fix today, the instant food, the instant success, and instant money, everything fast and furious. Buying into a
SECTIONAL TITLE SCHEME With property prices increasing every year, many first-time home buyers are opting to buy sectional titles, or town houses, as they are commonly known. A sectional title is a system in which sections of buildings are individually owned. The sectional title plan is registered at the Deeds Office for each Sectional Title Development Scheme. It shows all the individual sections as well as the common property, such as the storeroom, lifts, stairs, passages, driveways, etc. Every Sectional Title Scheme has a body corporate. All owners of sections are members of the body corporate. The purpose of the body corporate is to administer the scheme and to manage the common property. The body corporate takes decisions at two levels, at meetings of owners, normally once a year at the Annual General Meeting or meetings of trustees. All members of a body corporate elect trustees to conduct the day-to-day business of running the Sectional Title Scheme. Often the trustees employ a managing agent to assist them. The trustees are obliged to manage the scheme in accordance with the provision of the Sectional Titles Act, as well as the Scheme’s rules and in accordance with any restrictions imposed on them or any instructions given by the owners at any general meeting. The trustees hold meetings on a regular basis and make decisions by majority vote. Owners of sectional titles are required to make monthly contributions, called levies, to the running costs of the Scheme. The costs include: • Security costs • Refuse removal • Cleaners wages • Management fees • Administrative costs such as bank charges and audit fees • Repairs and maintenance • Provisions for future improvement to the common property • Rates and taxes and other service charges payable to local authority • Insurance for the buildings and common property. When buying a sectional title, one should keep in mind that to make renovations to the outside of your section, you must first submit a request to the trustees in writing, accompanied by relevant plans or sketches. Before you commence to build onto your section, please bear in mind that there
will be extra costs involved, such as land surveyor and attorney charges for the amendment of the registered Sectional Title Plan in the Deeds Office. If you extend your unit, your participation quota and consequently your levies will increase accordingly. Extensions within exclusive use areas are easier to be accommodated since extensions affecting common property require compensation to the members of the Body Corporate. Due to these requirements and complexities, additions to an existing Sectional Title Scheme are often not allowed.

Tips & Tricks After a good week of cold and rain we are now really heading for the hot period again. Time to prepare your pool for summertime and turn it into a safe and easy maintenance pool. Many people bump into a dirty pool and water when they open the cover. On a daily basis LIC Pool is called out to pools with a problem, from dirty water, poorly working equipment to a leaking pool shell. It all starts with perfectly balanced water. Not as easy as it seems but very important because it does not only looks ugly when the water is dirty but the equipment and pool surface may age faster and premature breakage can also be caused. When the water is not clear you know the water needs to be balanced, although even when the water is clear it still might be out of balance. With the home water testing kits you can only test the level of acid and chlorine but there is a lot more that makes your water safe and properly balanced.

Alkalinity is one of the important levels that needs to be tested and which does not feature on your home testing kit. Total alkalinity is a measure of the 'buffering capacity' of the water, or its ability to resist a change in pH. Every pool needs to have a check up on the Total Alkalinity at least every 3 months. At the LIC Pool testing station in our shop we do this for clients at no charge. You will save on chlorine and acid once the total alkalinity is between 80-120 ppm. If it is out of this range the water has no buffer and can't be balanced, causing you to use to many chemicals. This is not only an unnecessary waste of money, it also results in your pool water not being safe to swim in. At the LIC Pool shop we test the water components that you can't test yourself and provide you with the proper advise for adding additives like sodium bicarbonate.

A pretty nuisance! A weed that causes many a gardener to sigh in despair, but don’t give up, this beauty needs a firm hand!
Oxalis, commonly known as Wood Sorrel, is hardly an ugly weed. On the contrary, many species are favored perennials in garden beds, with their delicate, clover-like leaves and attractive blooms. However, one species of Wood Sorrel, Oxalis pescaprae, can be one of the most annoying and difficult weeds to eradicate. Often personnel at garden centers are not aware of the properties that make Oxalis particularly problematical to control and herbicides are sold without producing desirable results. Firstly, this plant has a vigorous network of bulbs that develop, rendering hand or mechanical weeding ineffective. Secondly, while most perennial weeds are active during summer, the primary growing season for Oxalis is in winter. Why is this a problem? It is often the case that perennial weeds need to be treated with a systemic herbicide in order to eradicate them. The most suitable non-selective systemic weed killers available to gardeners are those based on glyphosate, such as Efekto’s Roundup. The trouble is the systemic properties (the capacity to reach down to the plant’s roots) of these herbicides are only effective during warm weather, and when the weeds are actively growing. Considering that the plant is mainly active during the cooler months of the
year, the bride and groom will “miss” each other.

Wood Sorrel is not a disaster in all situations. If it grows in a small flowerbed, hand weeding as part of routine maintenance, will not get rid of the weed, but keep it under reasonable control. Heavy infestations in a lawn will need more frequent mowing, every three to four days. If eradication is the goal, a selective herbicide that targets broadleaved plants, can be applied. Take care to spray carefully so that other nearby broad-leaved plants are not affected.

If you have these little pests on your wonder- or daisy lawn, chemical control is out of the question as both types are broad-leaved species. Contrary to common belief, Oxalis thrives is any well cultivated soil and not just in acidic soil, making it truly an obnoxious weed. If it is growing between ground covers, it is virtually impossible to get rid of without damaging the desired plants and it might be worthwhile remembering the wedding that cannot be! What should you do in summer for instance, if you were planning to plant ground-hugging plants in soil that may contain Oxalis bulbs? Wait for winter and the sprouting of Oxalis weeds, and treat them with a selective Herbicide (Efekto’s Hormoban or Banweed) which unlike glyphosate
