Junior Golf Committee Report Junior Golf in the SWSPGA is suffering the same issues that we have seen in other programs around us. Participation is down and we continue to struggle with developing kids who become elite players. We are looking at the challenges ahead of us and how we are going to move forward with this goal.

High School Coaches Workshop We have schedule the HSCW for Saturday August 16 at the Raven Golf Club. It is a shared event with the JGAA and AWGA and supported by the AIA. We invite all the area coaches and get approx. 60 participants. We provide breakfast and lunch and it’s free to those who attend. The typical format is rules, course strategy, better ways to practice, and we invite guest speakers.

Antigua Junior Tour The AJT continues to be our bread and butter program. After seeing a significant spike in participation in 2012 we fell off by 30% last year. I attribute the 2012 numbers to added age groups and a full schedule of 12 districts. In 2013 we had in essence 10 districts and anticipate similar participation for 2014. One change in 2014 is an all-girls district. We have looked at combining districts in order to build the field size. In order for us to be successful we look to the PGA Professional to assist on the ground level in getting their juniors to play in these events. One other avenue would be the high school coaches to give their students some direction on where to play over the summer months.

PING Junior Player Series We are at a cross roads with the PJS. The challenge that has been presented to us is how to elevate the field so the kids who participate are rewarded for doing so. Presently the larger field sizes are looked at as a weaker field. What that does then is it drops the status of the kids who play well in the Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings which is what all the kids are looking at. We have discussed making these events Invitationals and making the events more elite and limiting the fields. We have also discussed ways to market this tour out of state in order to gather more strength. The cost of these events are very competitive to the other tours around us. PING has been a huge supporter of this tour over the years and we want to continue to grow that brand.

These Boys Are Good! A program which is a combined effort between JGAA, TFT, and SWSPGA as a spin-off of the These Girls Rock clinics that have been growing successfully. This program targets junior boys but most notably Boy Scouts. The Boy Scouts offer a Merit Badge in golf which consists of clinic time along with eventually playing 18 holes in order to achieve the badge. Half of the clinic will be reserved for Boy Scouts and the other is open to anyone. The 1.5 hour clinic is run by a PGA professionals at a designated site.

The Southwest Section PGA’s activities are currently conducted within three distinct entities. These entities are the association itself, a wholly owned “for profit” subsidiary (Golf Pass and Internet activities) and a separate foundation. The Golf Pass during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014 continued to decline, however it showed some stability following a nice gain in online sales as well as continued support among a core group of facilities. This event, along with the increased dues revenue allowed the association to support the activities of the foundation and establish a reserve fund account of $75,000. It is anticipated that dollars will added to this fund annually until such time as it contains approximately a years’ worth of operating expenses. Unique funding for the current year include the support of the Yarnell Fire tragedy of a year ago as well as activities of the foundation. Revenues and Expenses of the Association are as follows: June 30, 2012

June 30, 2013

June 30, 2014 (Est)

Revenues $1,375,649

1,382,600

1,402,000

Expenses 2,828.780

1,300,898

1,327,000

_____________________________________________ $(1,453,131) 81,702 75,000 ================================================ The budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015 will be reviewed by the finance committee and approved by the board at their board retreat this summer. It is anticipated that a similar contribution to the reserve fund will be accomplished again for the next fiscal year.

Sponsorship Committee Report The Southwest Section PGA has new life in the Marketing Department. PGA Professional and 5 year employee of the Southwest Section PGA, Frank Calvin has transitioned into his new role as the Marketing Director and is focusing on our current relationships while at the same time engaging with potential partners. With PGA Professional/Board Member Drew Reid as the Sponsor Chair, the marketing and sponsorship department has made a handful of significant changes. To start, the Southwest Section PGA sponsor webpage has been completely overhauled. New to the page are two separate tabs which help enhance our sponsors and their support to our Section. The “Sales Directory” tab is an additional option for companies that allow them to just have an online presence with the Southwest Section PGA at a small fee. The next big undertaking of the Marketing and Sponsorship department would be the new Course Listing and Sales Directory. Similar to our calendar we used to print in the past, this directory will be comprised of a great deal of pertinent information including but not limited to a list of all facilities, our current product representatives who support our section, and a calendar of events as a reminder of what’s to come. This directory will be a great resource for all of our members and is close to production. As always, if you know of any potential sponsors for the Southwest Section PGA please don’t keep that information to yourself. If anyone you know is interested in additional information please have them contact our Marketing Director at the information below:

Rowland Cole, the Golf Pass Committee, participating courses and section staff successfully navigated changes to the golf pass that allowed it to remain a successful product in the market place while continuing to support the association and its’ members.

Golf Pass/Internet Committee Report Throughout the course of the year any discussion regarding the golf pass was required to take into consideration: 1. How does this affect the participating golf courses 2. How does this affect the golf pass consumer and How does this affect the Southwest Section PGA With this theme in mind the golf pass added some options for facilities providing them flexibility with respect to the “offer” to the golf pass holder. This was done by creating three “tiers” for facility participation and allowed several courses to be on the golf pass program that had come off in recent years. The booking window for the consumer can be as short one day in advance and a minimum discount of 10% was required allowing these facilities to tap into a database of golfers that were basically playing on a “space available” basis. A strong marketing effort resulted in an “increase’ in online sales and the continued production of the “coupon book” continued to provide added value to the consumer. Sales were down about 10% from the prior year, however the program appears to show strength in the same demographic (55+) as it has in prior years. Discussion for the 2014-2015 program include the creation of an incentive program for clubs that are able to successfully maintain their sales levels as well as reaching out to Tucson and Las Vegas to determine if there is viability in adding these markets to the program.

Assistants Association Committee Report It is with great pleasure that we announce the Southwest Section PGA Assistants Association. This association was once a very proud and successful part of the Southwest Section. We have assembled a team of dedicated assistant professionals who would like to see this association reach that success once again. Over the past few months we have held many meetings thinking of ways to grow this association. We have also received help in the form of an Advisory Board made up of distiguished PGA Professionals and business men throughout Arizona. We decided that conducting a series of tournaments and fund raisers would be the best way to get the word out and meet other golf professionals that might be interested in joining this association. We believe that networking is a very helpful tool in finding that next professional position that all assistants are looking for. We need your help to make this association a huge success. Any PGA Member or Apprentice in good standing or any Assistant Golf Professional may join. If you are interested or know someone who would like to join us as we rebuild this great association please contact us. If you have any questions, concerns or would like to join please contact Adam Brungardt, Secretary at arbrungardt@gmail.com , or Jared Berry, President at jberry@augustaranchgolf.com. The Southwest Section Assistants Association would like to thank the following individuals for all their help; Don Rea, Jamey Lewis, and Roger Maxwell. Thank you for the time, support, and advice you have given us this year.

Southern Nevada Chapter The past 12 months have been an exciting time for the Southern Nevada Chapter. There is an enormous push to grow junior golf in Las Vegas and the allied golf associations have come together to be at the forefront. The First Tee Chapter, Southern Nevada Golf Association, Nevada Golf Course Owners Association, and PGA Chapter have focused long and hard on creating more, bigger, and more impactful initiatives to steer junior golf and we are gaining more traction every day. A new College Prep program for accomplished Junior Golfers is being supported by all the associations. This involves a mentoring and tournament component to help these student athletes prepare for collegiate golf. The Southwest Section is providing additional multiday events with AJGA points to reduce the need for our junior golfers to travel out of state for these events. The PGA Junior Golf League and Antigua Junior Tour are operating under the PGA Chapter’s management. Our Chapter is providing additional education opportunities for both our Membership and the community in 2014. We will host an all-day education summit in June. The tournament schedule is managed by our new Chapter Coordinator, Landon Nelson, and he has added additional social events on short courses which have routinely sold out. We have also secured additional sponsorship’s in 2014 adding to the prize purse for all of our Pro-Am events and several Pro-Pro events. The Chapter Board has found success in meeting every month and has published a yearly calendar while inviting all members to attend. Our participation at Board meetings has grown significantly and allowed us to engage more of our members. The executive Board had some changes in December 2013 as the President, Brandon Stooksbury, assumed a new position in Georgia. Existing VicePresident Greg Brockelman and Secretary Tim Sam were both elevated one position and Lee Smith was elected from the Board to serve as the new Secretary. At our Annual Meeting May 27 the mayor of Las Vegas, Carolyn Goodman, will be speaking to our membership about the impact of golf on the Las Vegas economy. We will also be electing 4 new Board members.

Southern Chapter Following a shuffling of chapter officers following job changes, transfers and new opportunities the Southern Chapter found Dan Wickman agreeing to serve a second term as Chapter President, Brent Newcomb as Vice President and Danny Medina as secretary. Chapter highlights for the nearly 200 members and apprentices include another very successful season with Junior and the Ricki Rarick program, some exciting tournament events and a strong continuous effort in support golf in this rugged economic window. More than 300 youth participated in the Ricki Rarick program which continues to introduce new students to the game, improve the games of those that had already been involved and a great opportunity for players of all levels to experience some form of tournament play. Chris Dompier earned the Player of the year honors, Glen Griffith was the Teacher of the Year and Barry Friedman was the Assistant Professional of the Year. Brent Newcomb captured the Southern Chapter Championship, Rick Price continues to support the operations of the Chapter in his role as Chapter Coordinator and Dan Wickman was named the Chapter Professional of the Year.
