SI-PFB-20-01-MTTB AND SI-PFB-20-01-ASP COMPONENTS CARE AND MAINTENANCE CLEANING OF ALL PLASTIC BARREL COMPONENTS 1.

Made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), a recyclable plastic that will never need to be painted or stained. It will not rot or splinter, and it contains an added UV protective agent to resist fading. The Barrel material is not affected by most corrosive substances and will not promote bacterial growth. It is Flame retardant (although when exposed to direct open flame it will melt), chemical resistant and will not absorb water.

2.

To clean all plastic components in the system, clean it after each use with soap and water. • Use only nonabrasive soaps, such as a mild dishwashing detergent. • In extreme situations spray the furniture thoroughly with a nonabrasive cleaner then scrub the furniture using a soft bristle brush and rinse it off with warm clean water. • If needed spray the furniture with nonabrasive cleaner and wash it using a high-pressure washer. DO NOT PLACE THE TIP OF YOUR PRESSURE WASHER CLOSER THAN 8”12” FROM THE COMPONENTS, AS IT COULD SCAR THE MATERIAL

DO NOT PLACE HOT ITEMS DIRECTLY ONTO PLASTIC COMPONENTS TO AVOID MELTING

SI-PFB-20-01-MTTB AND SI-PFB-20-01-ASP COMPONENTS CARE AND MAINTENANCE CLEANING OF ALL PLASTIC BARREL COMPONENTS •

• •

The stainless-steel hardware used is highly corrosion resistant; however, in extreme conditions such as coastal areas, while less likely to rust, it is still recommended to regularly rinse it with fresh water to ensure the longevity of your system and fasteners. All fasteners molded into or used to attach components onto will be stainless steel with most fasteners being chrome plated. Grab these Tools: o A toothbrush (or any other stiff bristled brush) o Hot soapy water (a “mild” dish soap is perfect: no bleach/chlorine/degreaser added) o Compressed air (compressor, canned air, or your lungs and lips) o A lubricant* (more details of types of lube below) o A rag or your roommate’s shirt (for excess lube) Soak and scrub/brush the carabiner in hot soapy water. o Make special note to scrub around the gate, rivets and springs. o Soaking time should be limited to whatever it takes to loosen the dirt/grime (2-30 minutes). o “Hot water” is a relative term; ideally, it is as hot as you can handle without burning yourself. The hot water is your best bet for removing a lot of grit—lube does not remove grit. o Never boil a carabiner in water, unless you can ensure it does not lie against the bottom of the pot while boiling, becoming hotter than the boiling water. o Burst some compressed air in the holes to remove any remaining particles. ▪ An air compressor air is ideal, but not essential. Canned air is second best and even using your mouth could have a positive effect. ▪ You could skip step 1 if you had compressed air and it might remove all the dirt. ▪ Without added air, a wet metal component will take at least an hour to fully dry. Once completely dry, lubricate the gate/rivet/spring/lock area, making sure to wipe off any excessive lube. o For best results use room temperature lube. o Always use a minimal amount of lube to avoid buildup (especially with wax-based lubes), waste, and to avoid extra cleaning. o To get rid of extra lube you may need to rinse the component in water if a rag does not do the job. o Do not use any tools to pry open a space where the rivet is to help lube penetration.

Top Lubricant Options • Wax-Based (Metolius Cam Lube, White Lightning–found in bike shops) • Teflon-based (Tri-Flow–found in bike shops) • Wipe component surfaces clean and dry after application

SI-PFB-20-01-MTTB AND SI-PFB-20-01-ASP COMPONENTS CARE AND MAINTENANCE CLEANING AND CARE OF ALL NYLON BARREL COMPONENTS 1.

Wipe off any excess dirt or grime on the nylon webbing with a damp cloth or sponge.

2.

Mix a small amount of mild dish detergent with warm water. Dip the sponge in the mixture and wring out the excess liquid.

3.

Scrub the nylon webbing with the sponge in a back-and-forth motion. Rinse the sponge in the

soapy water as necessary, wring it out and start scrubbing again. 4.

Rinse the nylon webbing with clean water. IF YOU CANNOT PHYSICALLY REMOVE THE NYLON WEBBING TO GET IT INTO THE SINK TO DO THIS (MAIN BARREL STRAPS, FOR EXAMPLE), RINSE YOUR SPONGE IN CLEAN WATER AND GENTLY SCRUB THE WEBBING TO RINSE IT. REPEAT UNTIL THE WEBBING IS THOROUGHLY RINSED.

5.

Towel dry as best as you can and then hang up the nylon webbing to air dry.

6.

Do not place it in the sun or near any fumes as that can cause unseen damage and eventually weaken the nylon webbing.

STORAGE OF ALL BARREL COMPONENTS 1.

Store all components (and everything else you care about) away from corrosive materials or chemicals, but it is also important to be aware of the damage that can be caused by humidity and salty ocean air. Humidity could even occur in dry-air regions when you dump all your damp outdoor clothing next to or on top of your gear. Storage in a temperature/humidity-controlled storage location is suggested.

2.

Ideally all nylon and hardware should be hung up and allowed to air dry, it is worth noting that this out-in-the-open space is prime for collecting dust, especially if the gear does not move for a while. Storing gear inside containers, in a closet, isolated from significant temperature swings and UV from sunny windows, is your safest bet.
