TGV Lyria on the Cize-Boiozon viaduct

Travelling by air. Switzerland’s main airports link perfectly to the country’s outstanding public transport network. In Geneva and Zurich, a railway station is located right inside the airport. Trains leave for the city centre every few minutes, taking passengers there within just roughly 10 minutes. Additionally, comfortable trains operate to most other Swiss cities at half-hour intervals. Basel and Berne offer a regular and excellently functioning bus service between their airports and city centres. Basel, Zurich and Geneva all provide a rail ticket counter right at the airport to facilitate ticket purchases for the clients. The journey from and to the airport is included in any Swiss Travel System ticket. More comfortable without luggage Using public transport is the fastest and most reliable way to travel around Switzerland. To make it even more comfortable, the clients’ luggage can be seamlessly transported from any airport in the world to the destination railway station in Switzerland via Zurich airport. For more information about this unique service, please refer to page 17 or access the Internet at: sbb.ch/luggage. General information. Couple with a Swiss Travel Pass

Carefree travelling with public transport. Public transport network The Swiss public transport network includes over 29,000 kilometres of rail, road and waterway and thus is the densest network in the world. Rail traffic information Information about the current traffic situation and possible disruptions on the rail network is available around the clock via sbb.ch/166. Regular-interval timetable Trains always leave at the same minute after each full hour. Main inter-city connections run at half-hour intervals. At major hubs, trains arrive every full and half hour. PostBus and boat connections are perfectly coordinated with these regular-interval timetables. The complete timetable is available on sbb.ch. Coach classes 1st class coaches provide additional amenities like wider seats, more legroom and electrical power outlets. Furthermore, 1st class passengers benefit from quiet zones on the train. Harmonised timetable – guaranteed connections At border stations and airports, connecting trains and buses guarantee a seamless onward journey. Connections are guaranteed in all places. Where no rail service is available, the journey continues by bus, boat or even mountain railway.

Surcharge No surcharge applies on national, InterCity or InterRegio trains within Switzerland. Panorama trains like the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express, as well as some PostBus lines (Palm Express), are usually subject to surcharge and / or require seat reservations. Train categories ■■ InterCity (IC) trains connect the larger cities without intermediate stops. ■■ InterRegio (IR) and RegioExpress (RE) trains connect the medium- sized centres in Switzerland. Regional trains serve all intermediate stations and additionally provide access to all branches of the network. ■■ Major urban centres have their own suburban railway (S-Bahn) network. The trains, specially marked with an “S”, optimally serve the urban and suburban areas with a high-frequency timetable. Seat reservations. ■■ In Switzerland, the majority of trains do not require seat reservations. Trains offering seat reservations are indicated with an “R” in the timetable on sbb.ch. ■■ For panorama trains with mandatory seat reservations, such as Glacier Express, reservations should be made at the earliest convenience. ■■ Information signs and loudspeaker announcements on the train notify travellers of reserved seats. Group reservations (10 or more persons) can be made via plabe.gruppen@sbb.ch.

Route highlights. En route from Zermatt to St. Moritz the Glacier Express comprises the following highlights and excursion attractions:

Matter Valley. The Matter Valley between Zermatt and Stalden spans some 25 kilometres and offers a remarkable range of scenic splendours – eternal ice, deep ravines and rugged rockfaces; 29 4000-metre peaks and flowering Alpine meadows; the highest-altitude vineyards in Europe and superb ski runs. Running through the valley is the wild and foaming River Matter Vispa, which converges with the Saaser Vispa at Stalden before joining the Rhone at Visp.

Kipfen Gorge. Close to Kalpetran, the Glacier Express continues through the wild and romantic Kipfen Gorge along one of the route’s most scenic sections. The train line and the River Vispa run parallel at close quarters, and in the past flooding and avalanches have caused considerable damage. The flow of the Vispa is now regulated and the railway track protected by masonry to avoid further damage.

Andermatt. Andermatt is located at the foot of the 2,033-metre Oberalp Pass in the canton of Uri, along the 144-kilometre network of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. From here trains depart for Disentis / Mustér, Göschenen and Zermatt. Due to the already partly opened new tourism resort Andermatt Swiss Alps, Andermatt is developing into an attractive year-round vacation destination.

Oberalp Pass. The Oberalp Pass links Disentis / Mustér in Canton Graubünden with Andermatt in Canton Uri. At 2,033 metres, it is the highest point on the route of the Glacier Express. Located even higher to the south is Lake Toma (2,345 metres), recognized as the source of the River Rhine.

Rhine Gorge – the “Swiss Grand Canyon”. It began 10,000 years ago as the famous Flims landslide – now it is a unique natural backdrop. Over many centuries the River Rhine has carved a path through the bedrock. The result is a ravine renowned as the Swiss Grand Canyon, and one of Switzerland’s most impressive natural spectacles. The Rhine Gorge is a popular attraction for hikers, bikers and river-rafters – and can even be toured by train.

Landwasser Viaduct. The Landwasser Viaduct is the most spectacular construction on the 63-kilometre Albula stretch between Thusis and St. Moritz – and the most photographed feature of the entire Rhaetian Railway. It comes into view on the right shortly before the village of Filisur, is 142 metres long and rises impressively to a height of 65 metres. The natural stone viaduct extends in a curve over the rugged Landwasser Valley directly into a tunnel entrance on a vertical rock wall.

Route Highlights. En route from Lucerne to Lugano, the Gotthard Panorama Express includes the following highlights:

Lucerne City. The city counting some 80,000 inhabitants is the starting point of the Gotthard Panorama Express. This popular tourist location thrives on the contrast between history and modern age. In particular, the Chapel Bridge, built in 1356, and the grand hotel buildings from the 19th century characterise the cityscape of Lucerne.

Rütli. The Rütli Meadow is the historic landmark where representatives of Switzerland’s three founding cantons met in 1291 to swear an oath of eternal alliance – “never to part in danger nor distress”. This scenic site overlooking Lake Lucerne is closed to traffic. But it is accessible by boat; or on foot along the Swiss Path (approximately one hour from Seelisberg or Treib).

Wassen Church. The train line which passes Wassen is unique in that – in order to gain height within a very restricted space – it has to make the climb in a tight double loop. Passengers are able to admire the village’s beautiful Baroque church no fewer than three times and from different angles – from below, close-up and from above.

Gotthard Tunnel. The existing 15-kilometre long Gotthard Train Tunnel between Göschenen and Airolo took 10 years to build (1872 to 1882) and was internationally acclaimed as a pioneering achievement for its time. The tunnel breakthrough took place on Sunday, 29 February 1880. Nearly 200 workers lost their lives during the tunnel construction.

Loop tunnels. The narrow valley of Airolo leads to the wider plain of Ambri-Piotta. It’s at Rodi-Fiesso that the most impressive section of the Gotthard southern ramp begins, with its two terrain levels (Piottina and Biaschina) totalling four loop tunnels. These facilitate the 650-metre descent in altitude difference between Rodi-Fiesso (942 metres) and Biasca (293 metres) – within half an hour.

Bellinzona Castles. After the Riviera Valley, the three imposing castles of Bellinzona come into view – the Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro. The castles were built in the 15th century by the Dukes of Milan and together comprise a unique UNESCO World Heritage site.

GoldenPass – MOB – Rail traffic information 2018. In the next two to four years, important adjustments in infrastructure and rolling stock will result in the MontreuxBerner Oberland Railway (MOB) not consistently using the same wagon material between Zweisimmen and Montreux as in the past. Official permits are still pending for some of the planned changes, so the following information is conditionally only: Large construction site Montbovon–Château-d’Oex: Obstructions from 19 March to 01 June 2018 Rail replacement busses Between Montbovon and Château-d’Oex guests will be transported in replacement busses. The large construction site allows no train traffic on this section. Seat reservation for individual travellers During the entire construction time, no reservations can be made for individual travellers between Zweisimmen and Montreux. Transportation of groups of 10 or more persons Group transportation services can be offered between Zweisimmen and Château-d’Oex only. The section between Château-d’Oex and Montreux will remain closed during the entire construction time. Some trains are planned to resume full-length route service starting 02 June. Unrestricted transportation with normal scheduled train service is estimated to resume on 05 June 2018. Renovation GoldenPass Classic The GoldenPass Classic with its recreated Belle-Époque coaches will be revised from 08 January to 29 June 2018. Starting 30 June, the three salon coaches will be put back into service. The name of the train composition will be changed to GoldenPass MOB Belle Époque. The renovation of the fourth Belle Époque coach with the wine cellar design will be more comprehensive. This coach will be ready for service by the end of August. During the renovation time, a scheduled train with conventional wagon material operates on the course.

Renovation GoldenPass MOB Panoramic VIP This composition will be taken out of operation on 03 September 2018 and completely overhauled. The renovation will be finished in the course of 2019. A date for its re-employment has not yet been determined. During the renovation period of the VIP Panoramic, a regular GoldenPass MOB Panoramic with panoramic coaches in 1st and 2nd class will be deployed. Cheese train Instead of classic coaches, the Cheese train will use GoldenPass MOB Panoramic 1st class coaches from 05 January to 11 March 2018. Chocolate train The Chocolate train resumes its operation on 01 May 2018. Due to construction work, passengers will have to change to a replacement bus in Montbovon. The bus takes the guests to Gruyères (dairy and castle village), to Broc (chocolate factory Cailler), and back again. This arrangement is likely to remain in place during the entire season until 31 October. This temporary program does not provide wheelchair access. Management and employees of the MOB will do their utmost to ensure trouble-free transportation and optimal support for their guests. Thank you for your understanding. We will be happy to answer any questions that may occur.

Services at the station. Passengers with limited mobility SBB offers special services for persons with limited mobility or visual impairment. The SBB Call Centre Handicap provides information on accessibility of stations and trains. It also gives recommendations on the selection of suitable trains and offers boarding and disembarking services at larger stations. Requests for boarding or disembarking services should be made no later than 1 hour prior to travel start. Most express trains offer a wheelchair-accessible compartment.

At the station Larger Swiss railway stations are also attractive shopping, information and service centres. Your clients enjoy delicious food prior to their sightseeing tours or they meander through the arcade and benefit from a wide range of shopping facilities. sbb.ch/en/station-services SBB Change At some 180 railway stations in Switzerland, more than 90 currencies can be changed into Swiss Francs. Larger stations offer evening and weekend services at their currency exchange counters. sbb.ch/change Lost and found Something got lost on the train or at the station? The item may soon be found and some honest finder may hand it in. A report of loss can be filed online and the passenger is notified as soon as the item has been recovered. sbb.ch/en/lostandfound
