FARE YE WELL, MY DARLIN’ for SATB choir a cappella

2018

Michael Kaulkin

FARE YE WELL, MY DARLIN’ for mixed chorus a cappella An arrangement of an American folksong collected in South Carolina. A soldier bids farewell to his beloved, informing her that he has enlisted to fight in the war (presumably the Civil War).

About the Notation on the First Page The patterns of black, stemless noteheads between repeat signs should be sung at each singer’s own discretion with regard to how long each note is held, where breaths occur and how long breaths last. These should be sung as quietly as possible with no vibrato and no discernible sense of a melodic line. The effect should be a faint, shimmering chord accompanying the basses. The horizontal lines with arrows indicate for how long to repeat these patterns, and where to shift to the next pattern (eg. Altos at 2b and Sopranos at 3b). No effort should be made by the individual singer to change patterns exactly on the barline; just proceed when the previous pattern is complete. The dotted-line ties indicate where the last note of the pattern should elide into the measured continuation of the piece, for Sopranos at 3d and Tenors on beat 2 of 3c.

About the Composer Oakland, California composer Michael Kaulkin has written several works for orchestra, chorus and the musical stage. He holds a Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory, and previously studied at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary. Visit www.MichaelKaulkin.com for more information.
