The difference between Jazz Big Band & Orchestra You may be wondering about the difference between jazz ‘big band’ and jazz ‘orchestra’. Big band swing music radio is popular from the 1930s known for playing energetic, upbeat music and bears many features of jazz music. Simply put, they are music from Swing and Big Band era. To produce swing music, one needs to use the powerful and rhythmic section of double bass, guitar and drums as main anchor of rhythm and sections of brass instruments like trumpets, trombones, woodwinds such as saxophones and clarinets.

Swing music is characterized by fast tempo and swing-type rhythm. Each instrument used by the musical band serves certain beats to feed into the orchestra. They help in ensembling besides forming the part of melodies. A swing band uses basic recurrent materials called the ‘riffs’. Generally big band was the swing-era dance, and Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, the popular bandleaders, explored new musical sounds by moving from dance halls to concert halls. Thus, jazz orchestra came into existence. So, we can say that jazz orchestra dates back to the

1920s. Composers or bandleaders like Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, and Paul Whiteman with other musicians took the name of Jazz Orchestra. The Roots of Jazz Big Band is Different Jazz Big Band has the roots in ‘Orleans Dixieland’ whereby Dixieland features 3 horns in the front- one playing individual lines and others playing the melody. For instance, the trumpet can play the melody while clarinet improvises behind the trumpet, and trombone adds accent or supports the melody being played below. In the Jazz band, the piano, the drums and the bass actually provide framework to the music being played. Although jazz was growing to be a dance, it was not taken that seriously and considered crude. This entire crudeness of jazz started changing from the 1920s when Paul Whiteman, who started his career as a violist in Denver Symphony Orchestra, formed the ‘Paul Whiteman Orchestra’ after a stint conducting the 40-piece Navy Band. The Number of Musicians in the Band and Orchestra While the Jazz Big Band or Dance Big Band can have 6-10 musicians typically, the Jazz Orchestra would have more than 30 musicians. Paul Whiteman had more than 50 musicians in his orchestra as early as 1922 and the organization grossed over a million dollars per year. Paul Whiteman is regarded as the ‘King of Jazz’. His concert at Aeolian Hall in the 1924 was considered as the best jazz moment. Jazz evolving from folk music suddenly takes the form of an art. This was magnificent in itself. According to Paul Whiteman, jazz might be improved with a bit of formal arrangement, but the stage for jazz orchestra was already set. He actually wanted to replace the various improvisations made of Dixieland, but this was not possible. The Difference between Jazz Big Band and Orchestra According to Critics An ‘orchestra’ in the truest sense cannot play without strings. But still there are exceptions. The early Stan Kenton Jazz Orchestra did not use strings, but was still considered a Jazz Orchestra. According to many, Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Big Band Orchestra are the same. We can say that ‘big band’ is specific and typically uses 3-4 trombones, 4 trumpets, drums, bass piano’s rhythm section and 5 saxophones. In a jazz orchestra, one can find more instruments than what is mentioned. In the case of Stan Kenton, there may be French horns, perhaps, or solo strings. A full-fledged film orchestra, however, would use symphonic string section. The music played by jazz big band and orchestra are almost the same. But the Jazz Orchestra is far more formal that the band. Jazz is quieter while band is louder and very brassy.
