2018 HANCOCK PROSPECTING PAN PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP TRIALS
WELCOME TO PAN PAC TRIALS Welcome to the 2018 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Championship Trials at the South Australian Aquatic & Leisure Centre. The South Australian Government is proud to sponsor the Pan Pacs Trials and we are looking forward to hosting our Country’s best swimmers off the back of the fantastic success of the Australian Dolphins swim team at the XXI Commonwealth Games. Adelaide is synonymous with world-class events and has set the scene for international standard swimming competition since 2011. We are proud to have successfully hosted nine international and national standard competitions including the previous two Olympic selection trials in 2012 and 2016 at our world class Aquatic Centre facility. We welcome all those that are visiting and hope you have an opportunity to explore our vibrant city attractions and experience our flourishing food and wine scene. There is much to discover about South Australia from the coastline to the vineyards and all that is in between - our beautiful State has something for everyone. I wish all the athletes and everyone involved in the Trials all the very best and trust you will enjoy your time here.

SA AQUATIC & LEISURE CENTRE
INTRODUCING OUR NEW CEO On behalf of Swimming Australia and our Board, our valued partners and our athletes, I would like to welcome you to the 2018 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Championship Trials at the South Australian Aquatic & Leisure Centre, Adelaide. I am thrilled to be part of my first official event as CEO of Swimming Australia and begin a journey together with the entire swimming community towards Tokyo 2020 and beyond. Having just witnessed our Dolphins dominate at Australia’s most successful Commonwealth Games, I am looking forward to once again watching our stars shine and the next generation of swimmers unearthed as they put on a show in front of a home crowd. From the action-packed heats and finals to the fun-filled Optus Junior Dolphins Clinics and exciting Club Relays, I love that this sport has something for everyone. The 2018 Hancock Prospecting Pan Pacific Championship Trials would not be possible without the ongoing commitment of our loyal sponsors, and in particular we would like to thank our Patron Mrs. Gina Rinehart, who makes an incredible contribution to our sport, and our Principal Partners Hancock Prospecting and Optus. I also extend my thanks to the tireless support and dedication from our incredible volunteers, technical officials, coaches and staff who all contribute to the success of swimming. It’s an enormous privilege to now lead swimming, the sport that is indeed in the hearts and minds of so many Australians. Best wishes to all of our athletes and I look forward to seeing everyone in the stands.
Leigh Russell CEO, Swimming Australia

2018 HANCOCK PROSPECTING PAN PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP TRIALS
PAN PACS HISTORY The inaugural Pan Pacific Swimming Championships began back in 1985 in Tokyo, Japan. Initially the event was staged every odd year to allow for an international championship-level meet in the non-Olympic and non-World Championships years. However, to accommodate for the changing of the World Championships in 2002 from every four years (to every two years), Pan Pacs are now held in the even year between the Summer Olympics. As the name suggests, Pan Pacs is open to all countries that border the Pacific Ocean but in more recent times, has been opened to include other non-European countries as Brazil and South Africa. Unlike both the World Championships and the Olympic Games, nations can enter as many athletes as they like in the preliminaries of each event. However, only two people from each nation, can qualify for the Championships’ semi-finals and finals. As part of the Charter, hosting of the Pan Pacs is to rotate among Australia, Canada, Japan and the United States. Following the 2014 event on the Gold Coast, the Pan Pacs will return to Japan in August.
