WORCESTER

STATE

HOSPITAL

DESIGNED

ACCORDING TO THE KIRKBRIDE PLAN BY THE WORCESTER ARCHITECT WARD P. DELANO IN 1877. 328,500 SQ.FT. 2,600 PATIENTS.

BELFRY

CLOCKTOWER BUILDING: LISTED ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES AS A HISTORIC LANDMARK, THE CLOCKTOWER BUILDING WAS BUILT IN THE EARLY 1870s, AND WAS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURES BUILT FOR THE WORCESTER STATE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL. AFTER BEING SEVERELY DAMAGED BY FIRE IN 1991 THE CLOCKTOWER BUILDING WAS DETERMINED UNSTABLE AND CRUMBLING. AFTER THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW WORCESTER STATE HOSPITAL, A DECISION WAS MADE TO PRESERVE THE CLOCKTOWER “BELFRY” (ITS MOST PROMINENT AND RECOGNIZABLE FEATURE) BY ERECTING A MEMORIAL TOWER TO PRESERVE THE BUILDING’S ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY AND MEMORY.

7

SELECTIVE DEMOLITION & REASSEMBLY: CLOCKTOWER COMPONENTS SUCH AS; SHAPED STONES, WINDOW HEADER & SILL PIECES, INFILL VENEER STONES AND DECORATIVE STONE PIECES WERE SALVAGED, NUMBERED AND PALATALIZED ONSITE FOR FUTURE REASSEMBLY, WHILE ELEMENTS SUCH AS; DECORATIVE METAL WORK, BRICK WORK AND WINDOW FRAMES WERE REPLICATED, OR REDESIGNED DURING THE DESIGN PROCESS. THE TOWER’S STEEL & CONCRETE STRUCTURE, WEATHER PROOFED ASSEMBLY, AND ADDED VERTICAL CIRCULATION (FOR MAINTENANCE) MODERNIZES THE STRUCTURE, AND AT THE SAME TIME MAINTAINS IT’S DESIGN INTEGRITY.

PATIENT AREAS CALLED FOR A VERY METICULOUS DESIGN EXECUTION TO ENSURE PATIENT SAFETY AT ALL TIMES. DESIGN ELEMENTS SUCH AS WALLS, DOORS, WINDOWS, CASEWORK, MILLWORK, FIXTURES, EQUIPMENT, AND HARDWARE WERE ALL DESIGNED AND DETAILED TO PREVENT PATIENTS FROM INFLICTING HARM ON THEMSELVES OR OTHERS AROUND THEM (INTENTIONALLY OR UNINTENTIONALLY), WITHOUT COMPROMISING ON COMFORT OR AESTHETICS.

WATER FEATURE:

BUILDING ON THE HOSPITAL’S DETERMINATION IN PROVIDING MODERN CARE AND TREATMENT, THIS WATER FEATURE WAS DESIGNED TO BE A DISTINCTIVE FEATURE OF THE HOSPITAL SYMBOLIZING HOPE IN THE FORM OF GUIDED RECOVERY. THE DESIGN WAS INSPIRED BY WATER’S NATURAL ABILITY TO HEAL THE TOUGHEST OF THE ELEMENTS, SUCH AS, STONE (GRANITE). THE ROUGH & HONED FINISH SURFACE OF THE GRANITE SLAB IS CONTRASTED BY THE SMOOTH & POLISHED SURFACE OF THE FOUR CHANNELS, REPRESENTING THE PATIENT’S TURMOIL WITH ILLNESS BEFORE & AFTER RECEIVING THE “GUIDED” RECOVERY AT THE HOSPITAL.
