COMMUNITY

y t i n u mm Co

Aspect Vern Barnett School Aspect Vern Barnett School was established in the 1970’s and was the first of nine Aspect Schools which provide education and support to children on the autism spectrum. The school was founded by its namesake Andrew Vern Barnett, who was driven by the need for an appropriate school to cater for his Autistic daughter. The school currently accommodates around 130 students at its main campus in Forestville as well as multiple satellite classes across other suburbs in the Northern Sydney area. As a long-term supporter, Forestville RSL C lub has been providing invaluable support to Aspect Vern Barnet t School by providing much needed funding for iPads, interactive whiteboards, a new shade sail for the playground area and autism specific therapy sessions to name only a few of the funded projects. Hundreds of children on the autism spectrum have been benefiting from the Club’s support and Aspect is very grateful having such a loyal supporter in the local community. For more information visit:

www.autismspectrum.org.au 14

What is Autism? Autism is a lifelong developmental condition that affects, among other things, the way an individual relates to his or her environment and their interaction with other people. The word 'spectrum' describes the range of difficulties that people on the autism spectrum may experience and the degree to which they may be affected. Some people may be able to live relatively normal lives, while others may have accompanying learning challenges and require continued specialist support. The main areas of difficulty are in social communication, social interaction and restricted or repetitive behaviours and interests. "An estimated 1 in every 70 people in Australia is on the

autism spectrum. Autism is a lifelong disability that starts when a person is born and

stays with them into old age. Every Autistic person is

different to every other."
